Help with my Iconia A501! - Acer Iconia A500

I have installed the ICS V4 bootloader and everything is fine. (it has the big PASS thing). I can boot up to HC 3.2.1 fine as well.
However, when I go to press power+volume down, I get "booting from recovery kernal image" then it switches to a picture of the android with a caution sign.
Do I have to root my device and install CWM or something? (sorry I'm still quite noob at this, I haven't rooted yet). Didn't I already install this when I installed the bootloader?
Thanks in advance!

Booting stock HC and stock ICS after installation of ICS BL overwrites recovery.
Follow civatos guide for installing ICS BL V4:

And do all the steps.

edit: on Moscow's advice ;-)

Thanks guys. I immediately booted to recovery after installing the bootloader. Now I have ICS running.
If I wanted to update to the V5 bootloader, could I do it without reinstalling my rom?
You guys are awesome

If I'm not mistaken, I believe you can put the v5 bootloader.blob in a flash.zip and flash through CWM. That's one method. This became available as of ver4.
The other would be to run the NVFlash again you used previously, and install only the bootloader (apx?). Your CWM and Rom should remain intact.
I use Blackthund3r's flash exe to install my .bin files. (gives some funny windows error but always completes) I just toss the new bootloader.bin in the same folder as the exe app. Also the latest recovery image. Do them both at the same time.
So basically 3 methods. Also, check your new UID number and make sure you convert it to SBK like you did the last time. ICS usually changes the UID number sometimes. I usually keep all UID's and SBK's written down.

Can you pm me that windows error please? I think it's to do with my mode detection code being stopped abruptly but I want to have it fixed properly for v0.3.3

Can't update to ICS.

I am running Thors v96 ICS ROM right now, and had clockworkMOD recovery. So I decided I don't care about root or a locked bootloader. I already downloaded the leaked ICS ROM the official one with the locked bootloader and all. So I renamed it to update.zip and put it in my MicroSD root, but when I press power on and volume up I go to ClockworkMod automatically, and I heard that you shouldn't install the update from their as you might get SOD. So I installed the stock bootloader from the Acer Recovery Installer app. And now when I press power up and volume up all I get is an error message that looks like this !.
It's not volume up but volume down, jakob95
Check through your PC (in properties of your compressed file) that the name of your leak is effectively 'update.zip' and not 'update.zip.zip'. That's an usual mistake that many people do.
But it should update from Thor's v96 ICS Rom right? Will it be glitchy though if I update from a custom ROM?

You get the SOD from the unlocked boot loader.. you can install from CWM but you will get an error of some sort saying ant install recovery but when you reboot it will install the Acer recovery.. long story short you can use CWM and not get SOD.. that comes from modified boot that you will not have.

Yes but I don't want to redownload the whole thing all over again for the unlocked bootloader version. My internet is really slow. Anyways I hope someone can reply to my comment and help me out before.
If I just install this one with CWM, and I get the SOD can I restore to my old ROM with my backup with CWM then?
No, you will have the locked bootloader... It will get rid of CWM and put Acer recovery back on there. You can't then use Acer recovery as you need root access and you can't get root access easily with the locked bootloader...
Locked bootloader=no CWM...
Seems like a lot of stuffing around to me when the actual OTA release should be soon... This is only a beta release....
Just go into the development section and download flexreapers latest build. You won't be sorry and you will still have root.

Exactly. Flash one of the ICS based ROMs in the dev forum, don't bother with the stock ICS leak itself and you'll save yourself the trouble of losing root.

I have successful to upgrade my iconia a500 with flexreaper ics rom 8beta2, and all working well except pes2012 and jelly defender don't work at all, and the camcorder still in 3gp format, not mp4 format like the last honeycomb 3.2 that's make me sad

There is a solution to all of this. Update to the stock update zip in CWM, root using ICS Root then flash a patched bootloader, kernel and CWM. Final result: ICS 4.0.3 rooted with an unlocked bootloader, CWM and kernel with /system rw remount functionality & no SOD:
http://forum.tegraowners.com/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=350 for ICS Root tool and instructions
http://forum.tegraowners.com/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=369 for the bootloader unlock, CWM & custom kernel.
Ensure that when rooting you tick the option to remove the stock recovery reflash if you want CWM.

[Q] Using afterOTA to update bootloader and nothing changed?

I read and re-read the development thread for AfterOTA and I found nothing on this problem. I will outlay the steps I took. I downloaded AfterOTA lite v1.7 and connected my tab to it and saved the txt file. (I can list the full output if needed) the Bootloader was as follows:
bootloader: 0.03.0X-HC
Android Build: FLEXREAPER RF1_rv1_Acer_AV041_A500_1.031_033_041.00_CUS_WW_GEN1
I booted into Recovery and found the version number.
My custom recovery: ClockworkMod Recovery v5.0.0.0(thor2002ro rev1.3.4)
I bought this from a friend and didn't do all the modding myself which I am new to the Iconia a500 (but not new to Rooting, Romming, Recovering) so I am a little in the dark on where to go from here.
I downloaded AfterOTA 1.7 (the Full version) and clicked on the "standard" tab and chose the install "bootloader ICS v 3.14.7 + recovery thor v1.7.3" and clicked the "for 50x"
It shut the tablet down said booting into APX, did the whole thing and at the end it said "complete, you can power down your tablet with the power button and boot back up"
I powered it down it booted up fine but when I reconnected it to afterOTA it dosent read the CPuid (it just says "0") and the bootloader space is blank.
Everything works, I can use it as I normally would but I want to install the new flexreaper and thought I might as well update the Bootloader and recovery to get up to current on everything. Thank you for any help you can give me in understanding what happened and what I may have done wrong. BTW I did disable all antivirus and UAC and rebooted before running AfterOTA.
You're probably ok. You just need to flash a "real" ICS rom like Flexreaper Extreme I would guess.
When you boot your tab, you should see some text in the left corner like "Skirlax_CZ's bootloader version xxxxxx" If you do, then bootloader is probably ok. Boot into your recovery and check your recovery version.
MD
I dont have anything come up when i boot other than a big white acer logo and then it does two smaller acer white logos side by side. Then it does the android boot animation. I booted into recovery and it is thor v5 not the one i had chosen in afterOTA. I just want to know what to do from here. Should i try again or use another method?
I just dont want to flash an ICS Rom without the ICS bootloader.and is there another way other than afterOTA to check the boot loader version?

Well, after ota didn't work then. You should have seen the txt immediately on boot. (the split acer tells me it's a HC modified ICS kernel in the rom).
You could try manually flashing the bootloader with NVFlash.
My theory, is that you should install the OTA/Full version of ICS. This will install the stock bootloader, then, you can run the after OTA app. Reason being, is that my theory is that the real ICS bootloader creates something the HC BL doesn't. And when you try NVFlashing the unlocked bootloader, it just doesn't take. It's been happening several times recently.
Is there a forum guide on installing the OTA/full version of ICS? Would I basically bring it to stock bootloader and ROM then use AfterOTA to flash the new bootloader and recovery? Sorry for the n00bish questions, every device seems to use different methods and when I didn't start with the thing until after someone else did the initial stuff I dont want to mess it up, this is a really nice tablet. Thanks for the help, You guys are the best on here.
Yep, you are basically taking it back to stock then using afterOTA to install the new bootloaders but most importantly get root access and a new open recovery...
Is the best way to go stock by using afterOTA? Or should I just try a different method on the forums?
It clearly states on AfterOTA's first post that it does not work on custom roms and only the OTA so yes, download the ota ruu and install it. Then run afterota and you will be able to install a custom rom after that. Or use blackthunders apx tool to update the bootloader.
yes, that was an over sight on my part, I was excited to update everything so easily. where/what is the OTA RUU ? sorry to be a pain but if you could just point me to a forum guide on going completely stock I would appreciate it. I don't see anywhere to get the OTA update.zip file I need to flash, I found this here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113878 is this the post I need? and do I need the update or the full package? does it matter if I use the honeycomb full package if I am just going to use afterOTA to install an ICS bootloader and recovery?

Need Help Flashing 8gb A500 (BCT problems???)

I've got a couple ICS 8GB A500's I'm trying to flash so I can do the memory swap thing with 16gb microsd's. I'm stuck at the very beginning trying to get an unlocked bootloader and clockworkmod installed.
I've followed several of the guides and they all seem to be failing at the same spot. I've done blackthund3r and afterota and V8-UNL-ICS-HC-bootloader-MULTI-cwm script with no luck.
I'm pretty sure the problem is something to do with my BCT. Running afterota to flash or blackthund3r w/o custom BCT each puts the tablet into the recovery mode but nvflash errors on a bunch of partition commands and fails to upload the images (afterota sticks on 3/5 for instance or blackthund3r hangs uploading the bootloader).
My guess is that it's because my BCT is different from the majority of every elses because I'm using the little 8gb version.
I tried blackthund3r using the extract BCT, but it simply hangs immediately after loading the bct and never gets the tablet into recovery mode. I looked at the extracted bct.dec, and it looks like the same few bytes repeated over and over (nothing like the default bct's) so I'm pretty sure that blackthund3r is failing to extract my BCT properly.
Can anyone assist me in getting a valid bct.bct for my 8gb devices so I can make some forward progress? (calling Blackthund3r if you're out there...)
Version info according to afterota. I also have the serial, cpuid, and sbk according to afterota:
Android Build: Acer_AV041_A500_1.033.00_PA_CUS1
Bootloader : 0.03.12-ICS
The only way to fix bct errors usually is to roll back to HC via timmydeans v4 or with srbeens direct nvflash command... if u have Ubuntu try nvflash with it
One thing tho is I don't know if the partitions, bct are the same for the 8gb - guess only one way to find out aye
U myt wanna look at jdgment3ls easy pass thread regarding reverting to stock
Let us know how u get on, good luck!

I tried using jdgment3ls method and that failed (I got the acer icon with the red letters about failed validation or something...can't remember).
I went with timmydeans v4 and boom...back on honeycomb. From there acer recovery got me clockwork. I also ran blackthund3r's upgrader with default bct and it worked perfectly this time so now I have a hacked ICS bootloader and clockwork recovery. As soon as the ICS rom finishes I should be back to ICS and can restore my data.
Thanks for the help.

Sure, I was just trying to figure out what did or didn't work after I used tdv4. It appears that it returned my system to "normal" so all the usual tools worked like acer recovery, blackthund3r, etc. I can only speculate that maybe the out-of-the-box 8gb had a different BCT and tdv4 has set it like everyone else's now.
Yes, I returned the system to ICS Stock after validating that blackthund3r worked (it of course overwrote the bootloader). From there I rerooted it with blackthund3r and removed the .sh script that deletes custom recoveries. I then reused blackthund3r to put a patched bootloader and recovery back on. I'll probably look at custom roms later, but for now I just wanted to get to stock w/ the custom bootloader & recovery and root and then use cwm to flash the memory swap mod.
For the record, I used Titanium backup. It failed to backup and restore the Minecraft maps, pictures/videos, and one or two game settings so I lost all of that. Is there a better backup program to use before tdv4? I usually just use the one built into CWM, but obviously I couldn't get to that one before tdv4 on this unit.

Ok, well, your obsessive use of smileys make thiss really hard to read. Nonetheless, the AfterOTA tool won't be the best method to flash the V8 bootloader. However, it will make getting the necessary ID's easy.
MAKE A CWM BACKUP FIRST!
1. So, I recommend getting the After OTA tool lite, then plug your tab into your computer with debugging mode on.
2. Launch afterOTA lite, obtain your SBK, CPUID, (it will save it automatically in a text file for you).
3. After that, run BlackThndr's tool, found here:
http://a500bootloaderflash.tk/
That will flash the new bootloader and compatible recovery.
Then flash your new ROM.
I personally am confused on how you managed to get a ICS ROM running on a HC bootloader, but whatever...

[Q] Do i have this order correct to update?

So i have an A500 i rooted awhile ago.
It runs android 4.1.2
CM10
cwm bootloader 5.5.0 x thor2002ro rev 1.7
i think i installed it from cm10-flex_v6Supercharged_rev2.3_gappsIncl_public....
now i'm thinking about upgrading to android 4.4, as there seems to be one out for A500.
of course it says i need to upgrade my CWM to 6.0.4.5...
this file of course says i need to install Skrilax bootloader.
And skrilax says i need nvflash to install it.
so considering what i currently have installed, is this the correct and easiest way to go about installing a new rom`?
(i keep getting dizzy every time i try upgrading my tablet, because all these guides are soooo confusing, always referring to something that's not explained in the guides.)
well made it as far as getting the skrilex loader installed..
now i'm trying to fastboot in, and it returns
? fastboot
googling it haven't found any idea as to what is wrong
took a leap of faith.. the ? still allowed it to work..

The ? means you have a connection between your pc and tab.
You are able to issue fastboot commands from yr pc. If you have a recovery.img file you can ' fastboot flash '.
The other way to flash a custom recovery is to use a 'flashable zip'. You could have used this method, by copying the zip to yr sdcard and booting to your cwm RECOVERY and using the flash zip option in the menu.
No matter tho, u sussed it out yrself, sweet
