A little confused on installing ICS.. - Acer Iconia A500

So I've been out of the game for a while.. I haven't checked the threads since before the offical OTA update.. in fact, i didnt even know it was out until tonight.
I have a rooted Acer A500 running a very early version of thor2002's version of ICS.. It's on a honeycomb bootloader and on an early version of CWM..
I generally am pretty decent about being able to read the dev section and find my answers throughout different threads but I am so totally lost on what I need to do to update to the offical ICS..
From what I'm gathering I need to update the bootloader and then install a rom.. if that's the case, what's the easiest way to update the bootloader? at that point do all roms work or only offical ICS roms? Sorry for the noob questions.. I've missed a few months and for some reason this is totaly jibberish to me.

I used Civato's guide here and went the manual way on three a500s so far. It is very easy, but a bit frightening until you've done it once or twice. APX mode is a pain to do manually, but there's a tool by blackthund3r included in the guide that is supposed to help if the manual method doesn't work for you. I have had great luck getting into APX by holding reset press and hold power for (exactly it seems) 3 seconds, then one more second before you release the reset button. Also blackthund3r posted in a different guide that he holds reset, then the power button until the power light comes on. Release the power button as soon as you see the light. One second more then release the reset. Also when it goes into APX the screen is blank and the power light is on.
From what I understand you can flash just about any rom that is using the ICS bootloader. Honeycomb stuff will mess you up... So none of that after the V4 bootloader. There are many smarter people here that can give you a better and more accurate explaination about the specifics than I can. But that should be pretty close.

no ota after unroot

I tried to get an OTA update (while rooted) from asus, and it restarted with nothing different but the boot animation . now that i've unrooted, i can not get the OTA to get the new 5.4.4.11 kernel (i think that is the newest one), and the latest one on asus' website is only the 8.4.4.5. Any good response from people is well appreciated .
This should work.

I'm running the rooted stock 3.1, prefer not to have to restore to get this to work. Hoping to get a version that doesn't brick me.
The link above has the file.

I just got done using nvflash to get back to stock 8.4.4.5 and then used the directions posted above and can confirm that it worked for me.
I did the same. You made my day.
OTA
Thanks for the reply, but does this re-enable the OTA updates
Edit:
It gave me the android dude with the caution... is this the US sku or something else?... and my power button is broken so i may have to wait a while for it to die
I would assume that you will be able to get future OTA updates after completing this, but I can't guarantee that. It is a US sku. As far as having a broken volume button, that could be a problem. I'm sure that it would be possible to accomplish by pushing it through abd, or using nvflash, but without a little research and testing a I couldn't tell you how to do that.
So is there any way to enter recovery/turn off the tablet without using the volume rocker/power button... they are both not working properly

can i get a hand plz

hi guys sorry to ask a qeustion that probably is sitting smack in front of my face but heres my problem;
ok i have a leaked version even though a few people confirmed it was the official because i wanted the update as soon as it hit the uk and i was seeming to be the last to get the ots.....
ok so ive tried a few methods of goin back to stock to getting back to stock to get the ota but of course since no recovery no luck.
ive tried the method in this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1622425
but i cant get the tab into apx mode? ive tried loads of times but i just can get it to go into apx with the pin/reset power method,
ive tried using the pbj20upgrade.exe but it says i need the new image version (Acer_A500_1.016.05_COM_GEN1)
any idea what step i take from here as i seem to have hit a wall
my current version
IMAGE VERSION: Acer_AV041_A500_RV03RC01_WW_GEN1
BUILD NUMBER: Acer_AV041_A500_1.031.00_WW_GEN1
'vol_' + 'power' = (red) "recovery verified failed"
reason is i hear flexreaper rom ics is better then the stock ota and i wouldnt mind being able to flash it with.....taadaaaa recovery lol

you're on the locked ics bootloader now so u have to use the manual entry to apx mode theres no getting round it i'm afraid...and thats if you want to go back to HC or flash a custom ics - the b/l needs to be unlocked first
good luck
So, you can boot into the OS ok just no recovery, is that right?
Use timmydean's method. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1307539 this will put you with a rooted 3.2.1
Works like a charm, and is as easy as following the PDF instructions. I have used it for my A500 and just used it today on the wifes as well.
It will wipe your data so backup your apps with Titanium or the likes to external sd card.
Update the Iconia Update app and check for upgrade via Settings (Should upgrade to ICS if available)

Yeh it would work fine if he was on HC bootloader.
From what I gather he is running on the ics one. With td's method that means a downgrade using manual entry into the download mode m8, remember on the thread I saidit was a slightly different method for ics???you gotta get thru using button press
"You won't be able to tell if it is in apx mode until you're connected to pc and see the drivers being installed. As far as the tablet goes the screen is blaxk and the white power light is on..that's it..."
If the op has a working system he can root and life would be good;-)
@CyaN1de Nice to see you got the wife's one done too m8

to be honest after i got it into apx mode the timmyd v4 was a breeze....a cold sweaty breeze but yeah.
ok lmao its 2:35am my tab is now ics 403 flexreaper 12.5 with a boot image install to fix a sod problem from F'reaper......and then F'reaper 13 comes out..damnit lol but all good right now im still chasing that damn faceunlock.
i do now have the acer ring!! yay!! ...its cool. lol
has anyone tried the flexreaper r13?
awsum, you're legend m8 thort i saw yr name pop up over there...i gonna d/l r13
2nyt get some well deserved sleep then do it all again 2mra..whoohooo
jesus thats another 4am'er last night lol good thing i got the day off work today lol.
so im brightly running the flexr' 12.5 everything seems to be great.
The acer ring is easy for customization, apparently we can apply TONS of mods to the 12.5 / r13 like transparent ring and menu's but right now the rings the colour it should be for me lol GOLD
so im gonna play around for a few hours and see if i can see what difference r13 brings before flashing but i have got the r13.zip ready on me sd lol
before tabs i was just mucking about with a htc hero gsm noticed one new thing in the flashing steps in cwm rec'., you dont "have" to rename the zips to "update.zip" anymore lol i know that seems small but its much easier not to get your versions muddled up after renaming them all to update.zip , i got about 15 update.zip's on me comp and i havnt got a fecking clue what they are lol

That is because all the custom ICS except Flexreaper install the wrong boot.img. go to my flexreaper thread and flash one of the kernels for ICS bootloader users. You can use it on my flexreaper and on lightspeed. Taboonay got its own ICS kernel for ICS bootloader users so look in that thead. Icylisous only works on HC bootloaders so that one you cannot use.
do this and.your sod will be gone.
I've got a question related to this here.

A500 Unable to boot to any new ROM

Hi, apologies at first if this was posted before. I tried searching a lot.
Acer Iconia A500.
I have been using FLEXREAPER custom rom for the last 6 months. installed any updated rom i can find.
Few days ago I found FLEXREAPER released FLEXREAPER-RELIX_rev5 ANDROID 4.0.3, downloaded the rom on my 2GB SD card, wiped everything, tried installing.
Installation showed successfully finished. reboot.
Stuck on the first ACER LOGO screen.
Wiped everything off. installed again. reboot.
Stuck on the first ACER LOGO screen.
Downloaded a few other ROM, such as, RE-FLEXxx ANDROID 4.0.4 ROM, Evil-Alex-Unleashed, JELLYTIME_AOSP_BUILD_5.
Installed. Stuck on the first ACER LOGO screen.
tried finding the ROM that I was using last. could not remember the name, so I found an older ROM, FLEXSTRIKER-FINAL-BASE-2-R8-3GusbIntegrated.
installed. Perfectly booting. no issue whats so ever. That means I did not brick the device.
updated CWM to CWM-based Recovery v5.5.0.x(thor2002ro rev1.7), the touch screen one.
went the whole process of trying to install with all the new roms I have downloaded. Same exact issue.
Stuck on the first ACER LOGO screen.
tired installed the OLD (FLEXSTRIKER-FINAL-BASE-2-R8-3GusbIntegrated.) rom, works FINE.
tried Fix Permissions from CWM advanced menu. tried the whole process again. same issue.
I am loosing my mind. any HELP?
btw, please be patient with me as I do not understand the Android terminology that good.
I always followed tutorial instructions as it is.
just half an hour ago, I tried to install RE-FLEXxx ANDROID 4.0.4 ROM from a different SD card( thinking maybe the sd card has something to do it) , Same issue.
#1. You must be on the unlocked ICS boot loader. Instrustions in the dev section.
#2. Upgrade your recovery to version 1.7.3.
Do those two things and you should be good to go.

guide for unlocking ICS boot loder
[GUIDE]A500/501/G100W-Installing ICS V8 UNL-BL & CWM Or back to HC BL(24-6-2012)
Should i follow this guide? or is there a less scary guide? would you kindly point out if there is any?
I am assuming you have been running honeycomb based ROM, you can't upgrade android versions without upgrading boot loader.
Yes follow that guide, that's what pretty much everyone has done to upgrade the boot loader, you have to have ICS unlocked boot loader to run almost all ICS ROMs, and jellybean ROMs, unless they provide an alternative kernel for honeycomb boot loader.. which developers have stopped supporting, so if you want to be able to keep up to date, and install the latest ROMs, you need to upgrade boot loader, the directions seems overwhelming at first, but trust me its very easy takes like 5min.

You have a good guide to go by. And trust me, if you have any issues, I am confident we can help you.
The issue, is the Bootloader. To run any ICS based rom, including my own (Evil Alex), you have to have an ICS Bootloader. That's just how it is.
The bootloader is included with every "stock" rom. Call it the security measure and OS launcher. With HC based roms, everything was more or less in order., When ICS came, Acer changed the rules. As they usually do.
A new bootloader was introduced, and it communicated more with the Android Kernel. So, after some hacked kernels, which was ok, it was decided the bootloader needed to be hacked, And so, the unlocked ICS bootloader came about, But, this meant some rules.
1. ICS roms run on ICS bootloader (unless they have a hacked kernel, which is really not so good)
2. Honeycomb based roms will not run on an ICS Unlocked Bootloader. So don't even think about it.
So, you have to upgrade your bootloader to the unlocked V8. Don't worry. These days, the 500/501 are pretty much "bulletproof", so you don't have to worry about bricking your tab.
Just remember. Your UID number before you do anything. So write it down somewhere. After your ICS upgrade, get your UID and write it again. Call it your golden key to life.

[Q] How to either upgrade to ICS/JB or downgrade back to stock for OTA

Hello everyone,
I have an A500 I rooted over a year ago and put a rooted stock rom on (Honeylicious 3.2) and I have an old Thor recovery on it.
It runs very well, but it's time for a change.
I'm either looking to switch over to a newer rooted rom, or simply go back to stock.
What would be the easiest way to achieve either option? I've been out of the game for some time now, and all the new info on everything from a year ago til now is monumental to go thru.
Anyone want to do a simplified explanation for me?
Thanks in advance!
I wouldn't mind some advice on this too. I'm on one of Thor's old recoveries and running his ICS from ages ago.

This may not be the best way, but will work for back to stock.
Install EUU for 3.01 from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1816560 , then follow the upgrade path on the play store until you end up with stock ICS 4.03. Easy, but will take an hour or 2.
You will need to go into APX mode (Power off, hold reset button with paper clip or similar, hold power button till tab vibrates (about 3seconds) release power button, a second or so later release reset button. Screen should be blank, and white power LED should be lit.
You will also need your CPUID. If you are still on HC you can get it from settings. DO NOT START ANYTHING WITHOUT HAVING YOUR CPUID!!!!!
There are ways of recovering it, but you can't beat knowing it before you start.
Also, make sure you have prop per drivers installed for A500 before starting. If unsure of any of the above, search the A500 forums for clarification. (Or ask, someone will have an easier/better solution.)
