[Q] Verizon 4G As Sole Internet - Networking

Hey Everyone,
I hope I'm posting this to the right section. Didn't exactly seem to fit in networking.
Anyway, for those Verizon users who are grandfathered into an unlimited data plan, as anyone used their 4G phone as their sole internet connection at home?
I ask because my internet went out this evening, and so I used the phone as a modem for about 3 hours. Couldn't tell the difference. In fact, the speeds may have been better. So I was wondering if I should cut off my Time Warner internet or if Verizon will start bugging me about my usage.
Thanks,
Steven

You will be happy to know that big red loves you so much that they have decided that unlimited data is no longer going to be available and will be updating you to a newer plan!
Sorry man...

If you do any online gaming whatsoever the internet on these devices is useless to you. You would have such a high ping that the game play would be useless

why man why, you and you alone is why unlimited data is ending crap you , Beep and so on and so fourth.
(End of joking)
I have done it before and it works ok, but it will drop alot. Your speeds should be good. But yea unlimited data with verizon is ending.
I did the joke, becuase it seem's like a lot are trying to say that some one using more then 5,10,20,30gb is why unlimited data is ending, when really they just want more $.

Haha - they won't grandfather you in but I still have unlimited data, just got a brand new S3 (yes, an S4 would be better but phones are so advanced now that these are evolutionary changes from one generation to the next. When the S5 comes out, I'll switch to the S4).

Wow you dug up a year old thread. But when the S5 comes out I'd wait a couple months and buy an S5 for about the same price you'll spend on an S4 and have a current phone.
Just curious are you running your phone stock?

With all the new kernels and rom developments lately, my Vibrant is running better than ever before. If this gets confirmed, that's icing on the cake. I could easily stick with this phone for a while.
Just went on the t-mobile website and changed my plan from "T-Mobile Android Unlimited Web" to Unlimited 4G Web. It says it will take up to 24 hours to change, so I will report maybe tomorrow on if I get increased speeds or not.
Hmm, interesting. My wife got a G2 and we switched our plan to an unlimited one an now I have 4g enabled on my plan (says 4g web) but I never really bothered checking speeds. But it might explain why I've been able to stream at 128kbs on tune in radio. I'll need to investigate this more.

If you buy any 3G or HSPA+ non-Blackberry smartphone they will put you on the 4G plan. The Android plan is being phased out for a more "general" data plan, and them calling it a 4G Web Plan has no impact on your download or upload speeds. It's practically the same thing.
Went through this with them on the phone when I got my HD7 because I noticed the "Android Unlimited Web" on my Vibrant's SIM (I put hte Unlimited Data in the HD7 and a 200MB plan SIM in the Vibrant). They said it was no difference, but to change it anyways since they're phasing those plans out.
This allows them to have only two types of data plans, like other carriers: Blackberry Plans and a General Data Plan. Before they had Blackberry Plans, Andorid Plans, and a General 3G data plan.
Since most if not all newer smartphones (except mid-range/low-end smartphones and features phones) will be HSPA+ (they call it 4G), they just call it a "4G Web" plan.

TheMan42 said:
Correct, I'll verify this.
4G web plans do NOT affect download speeds in the slightest, anything someone may think they noticed simply is experiencing a placebo effect.
Older grandfathered plans simply differentiated devices, now the '4G' moniker is used for all plans on any smartphone - be it Windows Mobile, Android, or Blackberry. Blackberry plans are the exception however, as they don't work correctly with other devices as they route through the BIS server. Case in point, theres even a '4G Blackberry web' plan, but no current Blackberry is remotely near 4G, they cap at 3.6 Mbps.
The only things that will affect download speed are the actual terminal you are using and the backhaul of the towers in your present location.

Thanks for the clarification. I knew this was not what it was being perceived as.
The idea that tmobile has to "enable 4g" from their customer service department seemed fairly ludicrous to me (I almost broke out the "Double facepalm" pic). Especially since my Vibrant connects to HSDPA the majority of the time which I'm fairly certain, since it's backward compatible, is actually the HSDPA+ (tmobile's "4G") network it was connecting to. I never enabled any 4G data plan. Or 3.5G for that matter.
This is also probably an attempt to get people to give up the Twenty to twenty-five dollar android data plans they've been holding onto since the G1 days.
yea, I just changed services to the new "naming scheme". It does nothing.

Man, I really wanted to believe this would work. Anyone else try it out? I tried to see what mine would do, but when I looked at the services, it added 10 bucks to my overall plan, so I didn't go through with it. I'd love to see some other reviews about this.

This is stupid
Guys, our Vibrants are not 4G devices and wont connect faster than 7Mbs. The plan is called a 4G plan but that doesn't mean that our hardware is capable of those speeds. Don't you think someone would have posted screen shots by now if they were hitting 4G speeds? C'mon you guys should know better than that.
anyone else notice the guy who supposedly worked in corporate in the tw thread is on flex pay....
now...im not at all sure how this works, and i might get flamed for this, but might as well ask.
So since the GS4G is the same as our phones, couldn't people just swap in the 4G radio in the the Vibrant? Much like the FFC mod?

[Q] Tmobile Bandwidth Limit

Hello Everyone, I am currently with Tmobile and I have my G2 rooted and I love it. I use the portable hotspot feature quite a bit at work so I'm signed up for tmobiles "unlimited" internet on my phone. However Once I hit 5gb bandwidth for the month I received a text message saying that I had hit the 5gb cap for the month and for the duration of the pay period I would still have internet since I'm signed up for "unlimited" but I would have a reduced speed... Let me tell you right now its very reduced. So my first question is, do you guys have this problem? and my second question is, which service providers don't have this lame cap? My friend is on Sprint currently and he's used 12GB bandwidth so far this month and can still use his 4G speed which would be nice. So I may go with Sprint however I'd like to keep my options open so do you guys know if Verizon or At&T have the cap as well? Also what kind of phones would you guys suggest with the two? Preferably I'd like to fix the problem with Tmobile however I don't see that happening because when I went in the store they said I was already at the most internet /month.
Currently the only 2 providers that dont have a cap AFAIK are sprint and verizon. ATT used to have one, but was taken away back when the first ipad came out and now they only offer 2gb and charge you 10 dollars a gig over that. Sprint phones arent all that great right now ,probably the best phone on sprint right now IMO, would be the epic 4g. Verizons best phone is the thunderbolt, which ironically isnt for sale yet, but it will this month. they also have the iphone and some other android phones (fairly outdated at this point)
You got to remember that verizon is more expensive than t-mobile. Sprint is fairly expensive too and their 4g phones require an extra 10 dollar fee for bs reasons. If you want the unlimited data youre going to have to pony up the cash.
If i was you i would wait for the dual core phones to come to those carries, the droid bionic for verizon and who knows what for sprint.
Ps. I heard that verizon is throttling the top 5% of its users. I read it in engadget but alas, i dont have that carrier/problem so i havent looked into it.
Hope i helped a little
Edit: forgot to mention that if you want 4g you have to make sure that you are in an area that has the 4g specific for that carrier. Your friend has 4g on sprint so that means youre at least in a wimax (sprint 4g) area.
Verizon has a different 4g (LTE) that might not be in your area at this point in time.
Also sprint has 3 4g phones, t mobile has 3 and verizon has only 1 and it isnt even out yet.

personally with the price per month my wife and i are paying for tmobile i would never leave.
best way to do it is to have 5 member family plan... cheapest way at least.
A T-Mobile tech support rep told me that he was told in a recent meeting that they were going back to the 10 gig cap. He said a date wasn't mentioned...who knows if this is true or not, I'm just sharing what I was told.
That was amazingly helpful and I have a lot to consider now. I do have it pretty nice with Tmobile right now because we have a 5 family member plan and if there is a prospect of 10gig coming out then I will probably wait it out. And if the new phones come out and I still want to change then I will. Thank you so much for your help!
There is a way to defeat the throttle. I've never hit the cap myself so haven't tried it. Five year old data plan with 10gb? Limit. But for root users it involved removing 3 files from the radio? Try searching the dev threads. I do remember that T-mo was the only carrier that this would work with. The throttle takes place on your device.

Nope, my bad. I'm wrong on this one. Good luck!
Well Tmo finally saw what we were doing in data throttling and it did work realllly well..but all good things come to an end.
I have however managed to "defeat" throttling by....staying under the 5GB. Through wifi surfing. I have wifi at home and at work and those are the two places you find me . Simple.
But its a DAMN SHAME because I never rode wifi before because HDSPA is faster than wifi. Takes me twice as long to download a CM nightie on wifi.
Tmo has got to smarten up. Still they're still my favorite compared to the others.

Your broadband connection being shared via wifi must really be slow for HSDPA to be faster. What is it, DSL?
HTC Vision (G2) - CM7 RC1 B12
I agree, your broadband connection via wifi must really suck. I get an average of 13gb down & just under 3 gb up. Some day's I'll get a little over 15gb down. You should probably get a new router.

Wait for Journal or go with ATT

So with VZ about to double data(again!), I have been thinking of getting a GNex with 5GB(or 10 since double), so if the Journal comes, Id have a great plan. Should I do that or get the ATT and get the 5GB plan? I hate that the only messaging option is 20$, and employee discounts do not help.
Thank you in advance!
One thing i learnt over the last decade using cell phone, gsm phone always resells easier, faster and at higher price compares to cdma. That's why i never go the verizon route. And do u really need over 5gb data? Sure 10 is great but unless u carry 3 battery around all the time and not using wifi at home, there is no way u can burn through 5gb data per month .

oh better believe some people burn through tons of gigs per month. If you stream netflix videos, tether your phone as a hotspot, etc. Then it is possible.

I may blow throw the Limit, im on TMO never came close to the soft cap, but I am installing an Ipad in my car and would like to stream movies/videos w/e thru the note.
I want the 10 just because its a GOOD deal, would kick myself if I get the ATT, dont pick up a VZ phone with the double data, then the note comes out on VZ and i coulda had double the data!
I think I will pre-order and test for 30 days. If VZ had this deal before, theny may have again!

The Verizon version of the Note, should it come out(I think it will, hence the question/anxiety).
Most important is whether at&t works ok in your area. If it's tolerable with its overall coverage and data speeds, I'd say go for the at&t Note.
Don't be surprised if the Journal for VZW doesn't come out until like this summer at the earliest.
I'm basing this off the 9 month span it took the Thunderbolt to come out after the EVO was originally released for Sprint.
Problem is both at&t and VZW fell into the bad habit of taking forever to release phones. Culprits being long iPhone exclusivity for at&t....and OG Droid being a hit for VZW.

if youre worried about data usage, just wait for the vzw version. ATT only offers you 3gb/mo + $10 per gb beyond that. I personally dont think the note is worth jumping ship over, especially since the journal will come out. It will have LTE as well.
How long will this double data promo last?

Verizon doing away with unlimited data, forcing tiered data

Just read that this summer all current Verizon users who are grandfathered into unlimited 3G will be forced to switch to tiered shared data plans. Exact words were "Verizon will have no problem making money" off the plans. I have been grandfathered to unlimited data. And not that I use a lot what I don't like is that the price of data is about to get considerably more expensive and I for one am already extremely unhappy with vz and this just further makes Mr want to tell Verizon to shove it up their a$$ when my contract ends next January. Thoughts anyone?

Wow, guess I will be sticking with my Xperia Play for quite some time. My fiance has a Razr, so our 4G unlimited needs are covered. If Verizon is doing crap like this then they need to understand they are not a "telephony" service anymore. All I need is an IP address assigned to me and let me pay $5-$10 per GB I use per line.

You already know I have something to say
So far it claims that this wont effect 3g users until they upgrade to a 4g phone, I have an upgrade but I will not be using it EVER unless an xplay2 comes out ! Which could be never. But I had a feeling this would happen eventually. I seriously think the part about "making money off of data plans" is crap. They claim they want to push people into using more data, thats kinda crazy the actually claim this ya know. Like Gee thanks Verizon their basically saying " we cant wait to bank people on data plans"
I read about this.
They are doing away with unlimited, but they are introducing "shared data". I personally use about 200mb a month. So if they do 2GB for $30 SHARED (any phone and any tablet) then I'll be very happy.
I would prefer to use my smartphones without a data plan and only voice and wifi if I could do that.
Sent from my R800x using XDA
So if we just buy on ebay used phones and swap sim cards we shouldn't be affected? They said you will be forced to tier "upon upgrading". The best thing to do is wait a few weeks before this goes into effect and but the best 4g phone they have and that will get you two more years of unlimited lte
Sent from my R800x using Tapatalk
I think that Verizon is going to find out that they could have made more money if they had kept unlimited data and raised the price of data by a few dollars. As of right now, they are forcing many users to lower their data plan and use less data because it is all they can afford. This means that they won't get much more money than before and the customer will get less data overall. Is that what they really want? If they want people to move over to tiered then they need to start updating their phones on time or even at all, and go out and get the best phones on their network. That way people will want to upgrade because the new phone is irresistible.

This move has me thinking when some sort of Xperia Play 2 maybe comes out I will just buy an unlocked one and go on AT&T who is getting way better, as long as they support unlocked phones on what will be 4GLTE by then. Hopefully I can get an unsubsidized plan, for cheaper, and I can tell Big Red to suck a fattie, on principal.

The only reason I'm still with verizon instead of, say, AT&T is because I've got unlimited data. I use AT&T uVerse for home internet, so I can get a wireless deal. If I'm going to be forced to pay for tiered data, then I'm going to go to the cheapest place that has it for the most data. Not sure if its AT&T or not, but I'm going to start looking.

Att's "4G" Play isn't true 4G LTE. The next Play I'm sure will be but I've read rumors that ATT and others may not support unlocked phones on their 4G networks (which doesn't make sense at all, but I wouldn't be surprised). Guess we will see. We are 6 months to a year out from a new Play anyway, if it even happens.

I came across a relatively new in box with all material Xplay AT&T 4G for $189 with free shipping, even though I still have about 9 months to go thinking if snagging that for when the time comes I can just use it on AT&T. Thats the other reason I dont care for VZ, CDMA, cant do voice and data which is retarded (I know its how the CDMA works) Plus with an unlocked AT&T phone when the wife and I go to China to visit family I can use it there on a prepaid sim card in China.

This mixed with their bs pricing and lousy service, both hardware, and firmware related, and now the data tiered..... yup I am going to walk into a VZ store grab a VZ flyer stick it down my pants, wipe, and stick it on the door handle. Sorry for the rant, just have a lot of anger with VZ. I'm paying $30 a month for terrible data, I can barely do GPS sometimes. Rant done

Thats pretty funny though I say you go for it and then be run like hell outa there to nearest att store with the flyer

But its still 4g.. certainly can't be slower then vz 3g right?

I came across a relatively new in box with all material Xplay AT&T 4G for $189 with free shipping, even though I still have about 9 months to go thinking if snagging that for when the time comes I can just use it on AT&T. Thats the other reason I dont care for VZ, CDMA, cant do voice and data which is retarded (I know its how the CDMA works) Plus with an unlocked AT&T phone when the wife and I go to China to visit family I can use it there on a prepaid sim card in China.

Supposedly ATT 3G is faster than Verizon 3G. Their "4G" right now is HSPA+ which is really more like 3.5G so its definitely faster. However the new 4G LTE, its like broadband speed. My Mother has a 4G LTE Droid Razr, its so fast that her data service is indistinguishable from WiFi from our cable connection.

Eh, the only reason that AT&T can do both voice and data at the same time is because of how their signal works. Those phones are always receiving two types of signal, so when you're on the phone, the data works at the same time, so long as you have adequate signal for that function.
Personally, the simultaneous voice and data isn't really a draw for me, as I can't think of when I'd ever need to use it. Besides that, it seems rude, at least to me, to be talking and surfing at the same time.

Verizon is only forcing you to a tiered plan when you get a new 3G or 4G phone. Otherwise, you can keep your unlimited data.

Anyone Running Their Nexus 4 On AT&T MediaNet?

I've been running phones on medianet unlimited for over 7 years now. In the past I saw threads where the original Nexus and Nexus S were detected by AT&T and were forced to use smartphone plans. Before purchasing this phone I wanted to check if this version of the Nexus was also detected as a smartphone. I've been using an international galaxy Note for a year on the $10 medianet plan and was hoping the Nexus 4 could also work on medianet.
Thanks
No, sorry

There are some that are using medianet with their smartphones.. You need to change the apn settings to whatever they are for medianet.. If I run by the forums with the information I will post it here for you.

I think the question is not in th APN used, but if AT&T recognizes IMEI number as smartphone - if it does, it will force data plan on you.
I've been usin Nokia phones for several years across the family and haven't paid more than $10/month for unlimited internet...
Wonder if the same trick will work with Nexus 4...
Anyone n the know - could you please post?
when I get my N4, I plan on switching to medianet $15/month unlimited data. Hopefully they wont recognize the IMEI
Medianet plan does not work with nexus 4..just came from att store..and rep put medianet plan for me..but when i got home..i recived text from att that i have smartphone.
Been running MediaNet all day on my N4, got a smartphone prompt on my GNex a few times...a quick call into customer service fixes it right away.

That's great! I was wondering if you could report here occasionally for a few weeks to keep us updated on whether you still have medianet or if you got switched. Would be much appreciated!

Will do, I am sure that even if they change it I will be able to get customer service to change it again. Never had a problem with them questioning me.
i call att and got medianet back...does anyone if it runs on HSPA+? any APN setting for it?

It is, you can find it by going to settings>about phone>status and look under mobile network type.
If your connection is idle it will say HSPA:10 but fire up Pandora or any music service and check, it will say HSPA:15
Just ordered the gn4 for the gf, hopefully the dumb phone data plan will still work for it
Yeah definitely hoping this will not get flagged and continue working. The phone has amazing specs and is dirt cheap. Definitely much cheaper than the HTC One X and has pretty much the same specs but for half the price.

Thanks for the info about calling customer service! What do you usually tell them? I just got flagged on my gnex and will getting my nexus 4 soon. Should I say something along the lines of "I don't have a smart phone."

AT&T doesn't seem to know this phone's a smartphone. When I switched my SIM from my Nexus One to the Nexus 4, my 2GB DataPro plan was removed and changed to whatever their dumbphone unlimtied plan was.
It was a pain in ass to get them to switch it back to a 2GB DataPro w/ LTE plan. Without the LTE plan, you don't have access to the HSPA+ APN, so you'll be limited to 1mbit downstream max. People have been getting ~3-5mbit (or higher I think) on the HSPA+ APN.

Where'd you hear that the MediaNET cap is 1Mbps? AFAIK, it's 7Mbps. That's what the GSIII forums say. I can't even run Speedtest.net (says I'm getting 0.8KB/s...) so I can't verify, but I'm pretty sure I'm getting over 1Mbps. In fact, the Galaxy S came from still gets 400KB/s (~3.2Mbps) so I'm pretty sure that MediaNET goes above 1Mbps.

I didn't hear that MEdiaNet was throttled, but I did experience something similar to your situation. While on "wap.cingular", Speedtest.net would act strange(9kbps downstream, ~1mbit up). I went to the store and got a new MicroSIM I couldn't get anything faster than 1Mbit. I called in, told them the Nexus 4 was an LTE phone so I could get provisioned for the HSPA+ APN's. They told me to power cycle (I just switched APN's from "wap.cingular" to "pta"), and I immediately saw 3Mbit.
So given this, I can only deduce that whatever plan I was provisioned for when I was taken off my 2GB DataPro was capped at 1Mbit. Given your findings, I'm concluding that anyone that had 3G service(MEdiaNet) before they rolled out HSPA+/LTEhad an unthrottled 3G service and anyone that gets it today gets throttled("Featurephone Data").
Also, the fact your Speedtest.net app is acting funny is usually a sign you're on the gimped plan that I got auto-switched to("Featurephone Data").
I can only guess and share my experiences -- since it seems the AT&T monster and their inner workings are far more complex then I gave them credit for. The same wap.cingular APN I was on, doesn't seem to be the same one those GS III guys are on.
Tbh, I don't really care for this thread. I can see that I'm getting HSPA+:15 when I use cellular data, and my transfer speeds are as good as they were with my old phone. I'm only paying $10 for almost 3G (US 3G is the worst 3G...), and ~400KB/s is fast enough for my usage. I can even streaming HD Netflix; I don't, but it's a good benchmark.
Also, the MediaNET plans are not monitored for consumption at all, so I have a true unlimited plan. When I first moved into a new apartment last October, Comcast was being stupid and couldn't get me internet for 3 weeks. I tethered for myself, my roommate, and all of our many daily guests. >10GB down during that time, at least 2GB up, and not a word from AT&T. Until AT&T gets a Nexus 4 variant, I'm not worried about my IMEI being recognized as a smartphone and automatically jacked up to an overpriced 2GB plan with faster speeds but marginal real-world benefit.
