Hey guys,
I'm planning to get a Nexus S (SLCD) version and I would like to enquire on the battery life of it.
My daily usage will be lots of whatsapp, google talk, sms and some surfing. I wonder if I can get through a day with this usage using stock rom.
Thanks and looking forward for your response.
I get two days worth of battery without problem! And yes, I have the SC-LCD (i9023) version. I also have Facebook, Twitter and Google all syncing quite often! I love the battery on this thing, esp. when you compare it to my previous Desire HD

Cool.. did you enable background sync all the time?
I am currently waiting to receive the SLCD as well, and my usage would be similar to yours. I will tell you in less than a week!

You can use all the apps you mentioned plus have background sync enabled providing that you switch from 3g to 2g.
I use:
Exchange mail push
Gmail push
WhatsApp
Gtalk
Phone quite a lot
When the data is on 2g (or 2g/wifi) I can easily get at least 18 hours.
3g won't let you last the whole day.

Thanks dude. Will be looking forward to your review!
I see. I plan to leave my 3G on throughout the day. From your experience and with this kind of usage, 3G on, can last how many hours?

i9023 here, using:
- wifi always on (in range for approx 16h per day)
- autosync on
- gtalk on
- exchange push
Got one day, but it appeared that Launcher Pro was the battery drain cause, switched back to Zeam launcher, and have two days without problem.
Not talking much, but using email/web intensively.

The results would be bad
I think I could get close to 12 hours. Which is not necessarily bad. However I don't like to live on the edge when it comes to battery - you never know when you will need it...
So I highly recommend you use 2g/wifi if you can. It won't hurt emails or WhatsApp, only web surfing speed would be annoying.

I see. If 3G can last me around 12 hours, I would be very happy already. Guess each person's ideal battery life is different.
I am now getting 3 days with my I9023. The upgrade to 2.3.4 really improved the battery life.
This is with wifi, 3G, a few calls, sms, browsing and about 1.5hrs of music per day!

They really need to get the 2G toggle working. Also, the Nexus S seems to take a while to switch where the connection dies in the middle for a solid 10 seconds or so before it picks the 2G/3G switch up?
I see. Is the toggling a problem for all the nexus s users?

When switching from 2g to 3g or the other way around, the connecting always breaks for a few seconds.
This is how it works on all phones usually and I don't think this is a problem.

Toggling is not at all a problems. There are free apps on the market to help you do it quickly or you can go the "long" way which takes 2 seconds and do it via the settings.
Anyway, it is not at all necessary to toggle between 2g and 3g all the time. You should live with one or the other and just switch if/when needed.
I live with 2g/wifi quite well and find I have to switch to 3g perhaps once a month, if that.

The battery life of the i9023 just rocks. I*don't know if it's better than i9020, but my SGS with AMOLED drained much quicker. I get 3 days of battery with airplane mode over night.
Coming from the Epic, the battery life on this is amazing. The Epic ate batteries for lunch (comparatively speaking) even on the best ROM. It wasn't completely uncommon on the Epic to be able to discharge the battery while charging during heavy use.

I can't complain about the battery life on this phone compared to other Android devices.
I get about 30 hours till it dies completely and that's with 20 hours on 2g + wifi, 10 hours on 3g, 90 mins of calls, 30 mins of music, 20 mins of games, 20 mins of streaming TV (Big Bang Theory ), about 4 hours of total screen time, 60 or so sent and received texts, 10-15 mins of web browsing, 1 email account, twitter and Facebook updating hourly.
For new NS 4G owners, or for any new smartphone owner, battery life will increase over time once you stop tinkinering with stuff. I've spent the first few days with the screen on nearly all day, customizing my homescreen to my liking, resulting in only around 6 hrs of life. Last night I hit 17 hrs, mostly on 3g, with 20% left before plugging it in.
This is my first android phone if you don't count galaxy tab 7. The Tab's battery was fine. 20 hours everything on. With Galaxy s2 I am getting 12 hours standby with everything on except bluetooth. I turned off wifi and 3g now and testing the battery again.
Now coming from WM 6.1, I wish I had the possibility to use 3g data when needed. I had to turn off wifi and packet data here. In wm 6.1 upon connect it used to start data automatically when needed. Is there a possibility to do it in Android? Otherwise it consumes my quota consistently if 3g on. If wifi on itconsumes battery. Is there a workaround for this?

Tab 7 battery = 4000mAh
SGS2 = 1650mAh
You wont get near the battery life. However as to what you are asking, no its either data on or off. Unless you limit your apps to only grab data once a day or upon refresh.
As for me. Unless I'm plugged in, I hardly use WiFi, the HSPA in my area is so fast I dont even notice it. However the WiFi to me in standby drains more than mobile data.
Juicedefender from the market id a good start.
Flash a good custom rom/kernel setup.
**cough cough villain rom/nimphetamine**
Strip out some bloatware with titanium backup and you will see a drastic improvement.

Also, Green Power gets some good reviews. It's one of those "turn on data every now and then" apps. You can get the free version here..

Juice defender didnt do any good, trying Green Power now. Android OS is always around %48-52. Is that normal?
Anyway I love this phone and I get around with 2 Anker 1900 mah batteries fully charged. So I change the battery, and I get more than 30 hours total with everything on.
12 hours standby is unacceptable whatsoever, I used cognition rom and it was good on battery life, maybe try a different kernel?

Hi All
Once again thanks for watching my video and getting me tickets to MWC...but alas i have another issue. My Note has horrific battery life....practically about 8 hours.
I downloaded better battery stats and there are no major wakelocks going on...(just juice defender at 3.4% which i uninstalled anyway) ....any other ideas?
Any help would be appreciated, another Mobiler suggested i put a custom rom on...I'm just terrified of 'bricking' my phone lol
This is perfectly average battery life for stock rom with moderate to heavy usage but if on light usage you might have some issues. Here is my battery like with heavy use.
Don't pay attention to people claiming Days of battery life they are simply not using the phone.

Maybe you could post up your betterybatterystats results?
I was having the same problem. I have a lot of apps on my phone, and it was just draining while sleeping as far as I could see. My main issue was all the unwanted apps like the social and media hub popping up whenever they felt like chomping on my battery.
I finally gave in and rooted, and installed droidwall to prevent anything getting network access I do not allow, android assistant for its start up manager, and autorun to delete all 'event listeners' that cause apps to pop up when they like (and there are hundreds of these in the stock apps, I assure you).
I now have 50% more battery life, and it seems to lose a lot less while sleeping.
I installed the CPU speed set thingy (sorry, I forget the name) but I had the problem a few others seem to have because it drained the battery faster than ever while sleeping. I will try again after a few days. I screenshot the battery graph in full screen, showing the WiFi, wake & screen, every day so that I can get a good feel for historical usage and battery life.
I have an el cheapo battery (had two but lost one) for emergencies. I am buying a Samsung one instead (for a 'real' 2500 mAh), and expect to keep it on me at all times. That should take me through a day of pretty heavy usage. I also have some dangly 'add-on' chargers, but frankly a spare battery is neater, smaller and easier.
I have also bout a tablet (10.2" with 16GB) for $200. I fully expect to buy another - one for work and one for home. These will reduce my usage of the G-Note and leave it for actual use as a phone. The main problem is that I use it so damned much! I have my phone, contacts, all my To Do lists, email, audible books, textual books, surfing, games, etc all on one device. I also use it to type notes at meetings or the like using my folding BT keyboard. It does it all really well, but does not have the battery to cope!
I know there are fat batteries out there, but I do not want to spoil the beauty of my svelte Note by giving it a hunch-back!
---------- Post added at 10:42 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:33 PM ----------
I also use Llama to control things like BT, WiFi and network data access when away from home or office. It does help, and means I don't have to remember to toggle. I tried Juice Defender as well, but its idea of turning on the WiFi at intervals saved my battery but seemed to make my email (IMAP) never download. I need to know when emails come in so that did not work for me. I may try it again at some point and try to make it work better for me.
Uninstall Juice Defender. I found my phone battery lasted twice longer after I removed it.

I use my phone for note taking all day and into the evening! Screen and internet used for over 12 hours, constant use! (Screen on lowest setting)
After battery "settled" I get around 10 hours then pop in a second battery!
Took about 15 charging cycles though to get the 10 hours!
Anyway just saying it may take time! And a second battery is always safest
Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA App
that's... actually pretty normal battery usage if you're using your phone a lot.
my note is operating pretty much 18hours a day. A full charge is all i need, and by the end of the day, i get the critical battery notification.
if your note lasted more than a day, that's great. But with the amount of workload i am expending using my note, i wouldn't be surprised if continued usage of the phone would only last 7 to 8 hours tops. or much less.
and besides, the note can last for more than 2 days, if you didn't use it at all.
thanks for all the suggestions...i'm going to give rooting it a go this evening. Will let you know how that goes.

Yeap, that seems like average battery life. If you notice (others) that his screen on time was pretty solid most of the time. That means of the nearly 6 hours on, I'd say about 4.x hours the screen was on. So that's good
I have managed to improve my Galaxy note battery life a LOT by doing the following:
- Disable Wi-Fi when not using it.
- Settings > Accounts and Sync > UN-TICK "Auto-sync".
With auto-sync disabled you have to manually open the relevent app to get the data, but for me, thats what I prefer, and it saves loads of battery life.
Used to be 8 hours or less with the above 2 enabled.
now 16 hours+ with the above 2 disabled !
Installed free version of Juice Defender 3 days ago, didn't do anything just keeping it on balanced mod and from now on I have extended normal battery life (phone, e-mails, sms, occasional internet through 3G) from 1 day to 2 days. What can I say ...
It works. When you switch into wifi, gaming or intensive document editing then nothing is going to save you, but just for having the phone in your pocket and using it as a "phone" Juice Defender delivers.
I noticed on the market that roughly half people say it is excellent and the other half is whining that it just sucks. Give it a try a decide for yourself.
Just turn auto sync off and untick "Use wireless networks" and you will be blown away by the battery life.
The last two days my battery was losing power too quickly compared to my previous weeks with my note.
So I thought it must be an app which I installed which is causing this. The only app I installed recently was Google + so it took it off and hey presto - battery life back to normal again.
You might say well it doesn't drain my battery with google+ installed but it works with mine as I tried re-installing again and it sapped the battery again.
Maybe different apps effect different roms, kernals etc...just a thought and something you could try with a recently installed app.

I can see that as an option, and I believe that all of those who report great battery life are doing much the same. My problem is that I want to be kept alerted to emails. I have tried Juice Defender, as it starts up wireless at defined intervals, but since my email is checking at other defined intervals, at appears that the email never gets through. I have to assume they never coincide.
I also like certain apps to sync, although I guess I could do that manually. Currently I turn on autosync while at home or work with Llama. Luckily the wireless and autosync toggles are in the notification dropdown as well - that is a wonderful idea.
I use the Note far too much, so (as I have probably said) I am getting a tablet. I hope that it will serve as my email notification when I am at home or work. When Llama knows I am at neither place, it can disable autosync and enable mobile data for me (which I keep off at home & work).
It is a delicate balance trying to get full desired operation and decent battery life. I am not sure it is really worth all the agro. I may just settle for a spare battery in my wallet and a dock/battery charger by my bedside. That is probably the easiest of all options! Then I can game away whenever I like without constantly checking the battery
Im using a custom rom rocket rom v21 with abyss kernel... which gives me a battery for 40 hours approx. With fair amount of usage. Sync off facebook app as it sucks a lot of battery too.

Awesome! Been looking for this feature for awhile now. Only downfall is just remembering to switch it back when i'm using Pandora
A bit off topic but I experienced a fluke on my battery life, was just watching simpsons while I had my wifi connected and only had my yahoo messenger connected probably a total of 10-15 messages in 4hrs range, for 4 hours of screen time it normally drains 50-51% only.
I almost always have the same scenario when I watch simpsons on my phone, yahoo messenger running but it the first time to drain it like this.
Hey people, i am a starter in this forum(posting i mean) i ve tried like 30 roms in an year in my sgs2(i9100) and currently on the ressurction v2. Just an information, since i am a noob i dunno if this has alrdy been posted. I did somethin somewhere i read on the net which boosted my battery life to like twice the previous amount..
Here are the approximate battery hours
without net, camera usage, music and games - 25 hours 17 mins(1%)--> Previously it was barely 13 hours
with al the above and 2g on(working apps like gmail fb whatsapp viber etc) i got like 7 hours with 80% remainin ---> previously 10 hrs an t was 0%
With 3g its close to6 hours n 77 % remaining.. previously t was 6 hrs..
Like i said i duno hw much is the actual bttery life o GS2. HEre s what i did(for those who think i am not a "bloatware" )
1. Take a backup of the image audio and the other essential files u need frm ur SD card
2. Go to recovery and wipe data factry data cache and dalvik...
3. Clear the battery data (or smthn like that)
4. Go to settings and clear the SD card(format sd card)
5. nw all the useless app files (Badly written apps) whch consume **** load of the power thru "android OS" re removed.
7. Jus copy bak the essential files and trn off the fone n let t charge to 100% (3 sad hours :|)
8. I think thats bout t.. I got a proper response.....
Mods if this s a repost or smthn please remove it sorry in advance...
Oh and try not to use the chargin process on and off. Charge t fully once n don charge if its not below the critical 5%... sm improvement in battery life
cheers to the noobs n ty XDA..
Interesting will definitely try this out. My battery life is pretty bad.
7 days and still going..
normally my phone lasts about 2 days with few phone calls, 3G and limited WiFi usage.. last wednesday, I charged it over night and today, the phone still has 25% baterry life. I don't know why it happened, but now it's 7th day of using my SGS2 without charging.
I go like 30hours on battery (got the 2000mah extended) with medium to heavy usage all day long.
3G and sync always on
WiFi probably 5-7 hours a day
Auto-brightness with LUX
A lot of whatsapp, twitter, facebook, instagram, etc

seriously...
wifi on 5 - 7 hours!? Using wifi saves battery i.e. doesn't drain it
Before my ph would run dead flat? - probably 36 - 48 hours depending on whether it's under heavy or moderate usage.
Think I may invest in 2000mAH battery to get 2 days out of ph...
I use my ph for work - so I charge it every night if it's below 50%...
Sounds interesting and logical. There are some apps that create large folders(iFunny=over 1GB last time I cleared)(I also had some random app making app backups without me knowing ).
I'm now flashing Hydra rom so I could try this out right now...
My record is about 3 days and 3-4 hrs but with minimal usage. With my normal usage I typicaly get about 2 days on ICS and a day - day and a half on GB.
My normal usage is some WiFi/H+ browsing or file transfer, a few pictures, music, a few calls and SMS and a coupe of apps, about 10 or so emails per day, lots of time and weather checks and etc. Generally I'm quite happy with the battery life since the move to ICS (stock, non-rooted).
I noticed this too, I backed up my phone and moved my files to micro sd, cleaned the internal storage and backed up apps, files you don't need to pc
you do get performance gains, my media scanner is shorter and its less awake if so,
i noticed as ics isnt 100% backwards compatible so androidos and media scanner was not far from display usage in battery information
OR you can just install Greenify without loosing any apps. Its on PlayStore, though it needs root. Perfect I'd say. Check it out.

I get a screen time of around 6-6.5 (full time on screen) hours. with EDGE on. so id say this is not the worst. your phone has been awake for like 4 hours. And you have active apps such as fb viber n whatsapp. And downloads as well. First usage can be inaccurate just try two to three full cycle charges and then get back im sure it will improve

6 hours doing what? If you use it non-stop for 6 hours (screen always on) then that's probably about right.
I get about 3 days use from mine (which has about 6 hours screen on time by the end of it).
Remember as well the warmer it gets the faster the battery will drop, plus turning it on and off a lot will take a lot out the battery, leaving it to idle in standby is better than to keep turning it off all the time.
I hope this helps but I cannot be more specific without knowing exactly what your doing with yours.
Can you post more detail. Like what you do with it during that 6 hours. do you have everything on like.
Things that you should check and lower to help with battery life
1 . screen brightness (put as low as you can handle)
2. Wifi on all the time when there is NO NETWORK CONNECTION.
3. sync accounts in background (sns notifications and running apps) ROGUE.

4. GPS AND LOCATION SETTINGS (EAT BATTERY NEARLY MORE THEN ANYTHING)
5. OVER CLOCKING AND TWEAKING SYSYEM

Saying that I have noticed leaving the wifi and gps on makes no noticeable difference on the nexus 7 (it does on a phone). The biggest drain seems to be leaving NFC turned on all the time, turn it off and you notice a boost straight away.
Less than 6 hours of intensive use everything on is the most i get for intensive usage...
Google promised 10 hours

wifi on for web use only, max brightness and bluetooth off..I can watch about 6 hours shows and play a game about hour and then turn wifi on check emails and some sites, all in all 6-8 hours depending. Never over 8 tho, but I charge it daily anyways as it seems to charge really fast.

Quoted right from https://play.google.com/store/devices/details?id=nexus_7_8gb&feature=single-wide-banner sorry but sounds like your getting near average battery life. I feel as thou i get more then 8 hours continuous use but i never use mine for gaming and never in front of it for long periods..

Thanks for the tip i will turn nfc off as i have only set it up NEVER Used it nor am i sure i ever will.
i was actually quoting on how my a500 and android phone does. Not really used the nexus long enough to get a true feel for battery life . My use is checking email posting to forums and internet searching. once in a while i will use gps. but never long periods of use.. gps on a500 sucks the battery and does not get the greatest signal . but it still gets 8 + hours .
Trinity 7 kernel, use TKT (play store) and UC to 100/1100 and disable offline CPUs at boot. Amazing battery life

Sounds like you have a fault somewher. NFC uses very little power.

Can I install this is kernel in The Stock Rom?

Yes u can flash it on the stock ROM. Use the above settings and you'll find that the battery doesn't want to come down. Its the best kernel right now. Be sure to support the developer by buying the kernel app also. I got 1hr screen time for 10% battery so that gives you an idea. Also 7000 benchmark.

This thread gave me the idea to re-download SetCPU to underclock it. However, I immediately noticed flaws. Switching between homescreens had become laggy. I uninstalled, and I'll leave it the way it is.
