Where would I start to troubleshoot an issue with the MTP Application?
If I select the Media Player or Kies options, the MTP Application continually crashes and restarts every second.
I have connected the device in USB Debugging mode, then reconnected again and it still does it.
I've done the driver installation in the kies application and I've reset both the PC and the phone, behaviour is consistent. Kind of frustrating as I can't upload media (DRM....).
IF anyone has advice on where I could start troubleshooting this issue I would greatly appreciate it

Here is a fix my friend but say goodbye to your saved games and files..
[try transferring or backup your files using wifi or bluetooth in case you have important files on your phone]
[and also, try to backup your phone contacts to your sim because formatting will wipe your entire phone's data]
Once that is done, try to do the following.. go to Settings -> SD card and Phone Storage -> Unmount SD -> Format SD
Once you have formatted the SD card, go to Settings -> Privacy and then choose "Factory Data Reset".
Your phone should now be detected once you connect it to your computer this time around.
Hope this helps.
I've done this once before. I spent a significant amount of time getting the right data under my contacts and linking them properly, I need to know how to find out why kies is borked. Otherwise I'll wipe the phone and possibly be stuck in the same situation again.
Have you had this issue occur and this fixed it though?
I had similar problem. Tried everything you mentioned and nothing helped.
In the end I formated externas SD card. Flashed SG1 firmware and rooted the device (all done in a matter of 30 min).
It fixed the MTP aplication crashes (dont know what of three really did it).
I'd been having the same problem on my Galaxy S.
It had been working fine, and I've done nothing to the phone to change anything with it.
Just opened the MTP App on the phone, then just crash, restart, crash etc and kept looping like that.
(Mines the Optus AU version too - might be a problem with something on there?)
Anyways I used the WebSharing app to download all my files to a zip on my computer, then unmounted and formatted the internal SD card - and then rebooted the phone.
Once it rebooted, moved the zip files (unzipped) back onto the internal SD as they were originally and plugged into the USB and it all worked again.
Hello everyone, I'm new here and own a Galaxy S now for two weeks. Yesterday I to noticed/encountered the rebooting mtp application when plugging in the cable while the USB settings are set to 'connect to Kies'.
To be short I tried all offered solutions found on this topic on the web and in the end only the unmounting and formatting of the INTERNAL sd has helpt.
I made a backup via Websharing since selecting the 'mass storage' option didn't work for me yesterday. Obviously this is a slow way to make a backup. Try to only back-up what you deem to be imported files.
So the unmounting - formatting and rebooting (mounting) of the INTERNAL cards is the quickest solution and will safe you hours of work!
HOWEVER
Today I had the same rebooting MTP issue again. But since re-installing kies version 1.5.1.10083 I'm able to connect to the pc via 'Mass Storage'
You will see drive F: and drive G: if you at least succeed in connecting via the mass storage option.
I than did 2 things:
1.
I recently made some pictures and also copied some pictures from my pc to the G: drive ( INTERNAL SD) I renamed the pictures to short names so they didn't exceed 16 characters (one of the solutions I read online ).
2.
In the map data I found folders with the names of in my case Touiteur and Beautiful Widgets. Both folders contain a CACHE folder. I deleted the complete touiteur folder and thus also its CACHE folder.
Now I connected my Galaxy S to the usb cable again and behold, the rebooting of the MTP has stopped!
Now I'm not technical at all and have struggled with this issue the whole of yesterday ending up formatting my internal SD. And to be honest I don't know for sure what the working solution is in the end but can narrow it down to 2 things you may try if you can connect via the 'mass storage' option:
1. try giving pictures in G:\DCIM\folder name a short name if they are long or try to remove the pictures completely (make backup) just to see if either of this works.
2. Delete the CACHE folders in the APP folder under G:\data and see if this works
Again, I'm unsure what or why I solved it on my Galaxy S but give it a try if you have tried everthing else and do not want to format your INTERNAL SD
I've got a fix
Alright guys, I posted a video on how to repair the MTP application problem, especially for you spencee, check it out. Go to youtube and copy paste: MTP Application Crash Fix. And click the first one. It's by abrar447. Hope this helps!
Ok, I'm having this issue again! I watched the video by Abrar447 and deleted every single file in cash I could find ( actually did a search on the word 'cache' on the internal drive. Although I know this should now work my TMP application keeps rebooting. Am I missing something here ?

Thanks again for posting this video. It actually worked for me, been trying to find the solution to that MTP crashing problem when trying to connect in Kies mode.
narrowed it down
I have this problem too. I saw the youtube vid and decided i'd delete one cache folder a time to see what was causing the problem. Found out that is was 'Sound Hound'. So i deleted the cache folder, MTP worked, then i used the app so it would create another cache folder, MTP clashed. Did it many times.
Hope this helps.

Really weird problem , after clearing the cache it works again.
I reccomend using CacheMate for Root Users (free or pro) which you can find in the market , you dont need to delete all the cache manually then
Hi..
Anyone know the exact name for the MTP Application..is there a way to replace the problematic version with a working version..On my ship with ROM. i9000dxjf4..MTP application showed steadily without keep crashing..
MtpApplication.apk
MtpApplication.odex.
If anyone has the working version (no crashing on Kies connection). can post here..I would like to experiment to overwrite it with a working version..

Hello,
I also had a lot of issue's with Kies. I also tried a lot. But the one thing that helped was removing SOUND HOUND (application and directory)
Hope this helpes for some people!

I emptied the cache under the Android folder and it started working again. The thing is, as soon as I open the gallery, the cache is written again. I'll try to see if the new update fixed the issue.
The problem is the not cache in itself. The bug is the '16 character extension' problem. Google it if you like. The solution is to delete all the files having its last extension greater then 16 char, in your internal or external SD card.
I asked about the fix on twitter, the reply was this.
I found a small program which tell you which files are the problem.

Hello everybody,
i'm a bit new to Galaxy I9000 but i had the same issue with Kies and MTP apps. Actually i found out that the issue seems to be linked to file extension longer than 16 chars. Usually those files are inside cache directories so, you should just cancel them to fix it. I've got kies running correctly since then (last update of Kies running n Windows 7 64 bit). I know there is also a little app to scan files to search the 16 digits extension called "FileSearcherforKiesFix.rar" you can find it and download just putting it in google.
Hope this can help!

Is there an apk version of this? I'm unable to connect the phone to my x64 win7 at all right now...

Have tried everything and nothing seemed to work...
The "FileSearcherforKiesFix" finds some problematic files, but not all off them. Manually deleting long file names and cache folders seems to be insufficient either.. I think that there must be some cache files in other partitions that we cannot access via "Mass Storage" that are causing problems too. So we have to clear those files...
But thanks to a comment in this topic I have found a working solution:
1º Delete any problematic file with the "FileSearcherforKiesFix" method.
2º Use this app: http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.aac.cachemate.demo , with the option "PowerClear" turned on, and clear all cache from the phone.
After this the MTP thing installed instantly and now everything works.
NOTE: The "PowerClear" option may cause some undesired effects in some apps.. Backup first, or, use at your own risk.
For me the problem started when I copied lots of MP3 to my phone.
I solve this like this:
I connected my phone using the media mode.
Searched for all *.mp3 files
renamed them all to *.! (whatever extension)
(I use a program called FAR Manager, which is something similar to the old Norton commander, but for windows)
Connected with Kies and it got recognised
Hope it helps others

Hi there. This is my first reply to a problem. I think i have it figured out.
Check this:
Menu -> Settings -> Applications -> Development:
On this screen make sure USB debugging is unchecked.
When you plug the phone into your computer, then a dialog should pop up on your phone asking you to enable USB storage mode. Tap "Turn on USB storage".
It may ask you to confirm. Tap "OK".
Good luck. I hope that helps you.

It's very much difficult than that. Well the only way to restore your usb problem is going back to stock and after that you only can install a 2.2 custom rom, after you switch to 2.3 your problem will appear again! If you go to "device manager" on windows when U use 2.2, U see that the phone is corrected installed, but when u connect with 2.3 rom, the device it's not corrected installed and therefore only mounted as CD-ROM... I know that, 'cause I have the same problem and tried all this options. I installed usb drivers that huaei give us on their site, but the problem persists. I tried with both CWM recoveries and both work good on 2.2, stock or custom, but not on 2.3....
Last but not least, go check your imei on system, almost sure U got a 0 on that too, as me. So this is some problem with 2.3 roms that "f*cked up" our phone. Altough usb problem is reversible when installed stock rom, the problem with the imei persists after a stock rom install...
Hope it help some people somehow!
(sorry for bad bad english)
Try uninstalling device drivers, then reinsert the phone and let it install.
What do you see on the CD rom? The sdcard contents?
Hello if you are with cm7, go to definitions - about phone and project menu. Testes other options for usb.

Did U check your IMEI? Please confirm that, 'cause If U have IMEI=0 and usb problem as me or other guy I know, maybe the problems are related to each other, and forget easy options, i tried almost everything, almost sure that when install 2.3 roms. it changes some values and the phone goes nuts, 'cause if you use 2.2 it works correctly as a normal usb device!

I know this is an old topic, but I have the same problem: USB shows up as a CD Drive and IMEI is 0. Does anybody know a fix for this?
After rooted the official gingerbread my device was never the same.
Let me try to explain what is happening to see if someone can help.
Official roms:
When I turn my device to PC via USB and then choose the option Mount USB Storage what happens is in the device the Android stays Green with the option below to mount storage, the SD card is apparently un-mounted from device but in the PC I can see the SD card content normally and see it as a removable storage drive
Custom roms:
When I turn my device to PC via USB and then choose the option Mount USB Storage what happens is in the device the Android stays Green with the option below to mount storage, the SD card is apparently un-mounted from device but in the PC I can see the SD card content but can’t make any changes as it opens up as a CD drive. Imagine you put a CD/DVD in your drive you can see all the files but you cannot write on it.
What can I do as seems to be a deep system alteration that won’t change by doing anything at all such as flashing new roms, changing complete content of pink screen, factory resets, etc, etc.
Can someone plz help me with this?
try this with cm7
settings->about phone->project menu->USE GOOGLE USB
I stuck with 2.3 official again!!!
I think I going to deliver my phone to TMN and say that got ****ed up after official upgrade instalation
I've read somewhere that the TMN ones (or some of them) are called "black sheep" since they have some problems (installing other roms I think), maybe your problems where there all along and the updates brought them to the surface...
Yeah, send it back
Yes I know, but I got lucky as my device is like a Hummer.Mine is not.
Goes over of it all, until I messed up... lolol

I have a so called "black sheep" and official 2.3.5 is rooted and runnin' flawlessly.
try revert to 2.2.2 using internal sd card.
I got it at last doing this:
Dial * # * # 2846579 # * # *
Background Setting > USB ports setting > choose "Normal Mode" and then rebooted.
The option that was by default and was giving me all this trouble was "Manufacture mode".
Tried to choose "Google Mode" but after reboot revert back to "Manufacture mode" again.
This way every time I connect the USB and choose the option Mount Usb Storage the SD was getting unmounted in the device but in the PC was showing as removable disk giving me full access.
When I unplug the cable I had to mount the card again.
****ing weird!!!!

no they are not (me +2other friends have such phones). it's hapenning the same as before: people messing up.
Well, this problem is not related to 2.3.5 update, but with updates in general, 'cause i have it about a month ago. Same thing as you, but if U use a 2.2 custom ROM (flb or void) you should mount usb properly. If U go to device manager you will see that the drivers aren't properly installed.
Altough I don´t know the exact time, i think my probelm begins when after flashing a ROM I got the blue screen and needed to install b138 elisa. I guess after we get a blue screen the phone never is the same.
BTW i got 0 imei. And have an theory to this to. The IMEI are related to an operator, so when flashing a official rom not from operator, maybe the phone goes crazy and the IMEI begins to shown 0, it's not a big deal, since we can communicate normally with people.
so how do I install the drivers correctly?
I found a way to revert from 2.3 and I'm in MIUI again but USB issue still there shiiiiiiit

I d0n't lnow, i don't have an solution, I install some drivers that are in huawei server, but with no luck.
The main point is: using a 2.2 rom, all ok, upgrade to a 2.3 rom, and U have problems, so the problem it's not on pc and in hardware, the problem somehow is software.
What I'm wondering it's that the official 2.3.5 help with this problem, but with your report the hope dissapear...
yes the problem is in the device nt in PC.
I think its missing the adb USB drivers inside the device.
and yes its software problem not hardware
Druida69,
Is your IMEI 0 ?
Do you have wifi ERROR in 2.3 Custom Roms ?
I have that USB problem since I tried to format SD Card directly from the mobile, with CM7... all problems started there... and there is another user over here that made the same with MIUI.

ME! Me Me! lol
I have this problem, but don't have problems with wi-fi, my imei is 0 also, but if you use custom or stock 2.2 the usb works fine, so don't think that the problem is caused by formating the sd... I guess is that the libraries in 2.3 somehow changed, i guess the libraries from geno changed a while ago, and therefore this bug appears. It's not for everyone 'cause we all know that x5 have personnality, so...
regarding IMEI yes its 0.
I don't know when it happen and how it was before as I never look for it, up to this moment.
Regarding the USB, I think start to happen when I tried to root the official 2.3.
All drivers in computer are fine as I uninstall them and install all again just to make sure.
Something change something deep inside the phone software and mess all of it.
I manage to do a shortcut though. In official 2.3 you can mount usb storage again if you do this:
dial *#*#2846579#*#*
then you will be inside Project Menu.
Go to Background setting > USB ports setting and you will see these options:
Normal Mode
Google Mode
CTS test mode
Manufacture mode
Authentication mode
Other Mode
By default all systems are with Google Mode activated.
Change to Normal Mode and it solve the problem.
If you try to change this option in CM7 for example, won't work, odd but I don't know why...
Hello !
This USB issue happens to me since CM7 (imei 0, wifi error...). And it happens with all roms (even 2.2.2 stock rom)
I can use usb storage, but in the end I have to manualy mount card again.
With 2.3.5 Official I went into Project Menu and was already in Manufacture Mode, if I change it to Google Mode everything works normally... but after a reset setup returns back to Manufacture Mode.
It is a solution... temporary... but it is

As I said before, this problem, regardeless appears more often now, it's not related with the update to official 2.3.5 since I and at least to people more, have this problem before official beta rom appears... It is related to the process of upgrading any rom, and I think it happens when we get a pink screen...

4- the wipe cache partition.

If you would like to share how it would help others who may have the same problem.... :good:
"Select USB Configuration" message not appearing when connected to pc - [MI A1].
1 week since I updated to oreo 8.1 and just two days after the update I again connected my MI A1 to my Well-Drivered PCas usually I'd do to transfer media, when I noticed that "Select USB Configuration" is no more prompting me in the notification bar. The phone charges though, as it normally would on a PC. I googled a lot and found nothing of importance as there are only MTP-related issues for Redmi Note 3/3Pro/Note 4 users and not exactly the one that I'm having right now.
I have thoroughly checked for any third-party app or Device Admin App which could probably be potentially & silently installed as adware/malware but found none. Cleaned all the Apps' Caches, unused data, corpsed folders, etc. with SD Maid Pro just now but the problem still persists. I didn't find any dedicated YT video related to this particular problem.
Please help, I have lots of data to be transferred to my PC to be safely backed up.
Waiting for your valuable response(s)...
Hey buddy I am Having the same problem.
I haven't found any solution yet.
If you have found one then pls let me know.
And if you haven't found the solution then for file transfer you can use xender, airdrop etc. Apps
Same here. On August patch, it wasn't reading at all. I reflashed July patch and the problem was lessen a bit because this time it's a hit or miss. Sometimes it reads my phone but most of time it doesn't. I tried different computer and cords as well.
However, in Fastboot mode when connected, the phone can be read perfectly.
Have anyone of you tried to reset the USB debugging authorization, you find this under developer options. Maybe you have to do a restart after it and than reconnect to your PC.

Yes have done that too
I didn't face any issues with the usb connection with MTP or ADB debugging on the 8.1 July and August stock rom. Its probably a config issue or a loose connection on the usb port. Trying using another cable and replug the cables on the pc as well.

I googled a lot and found nothing of importance as there are only MTP-related issues for Redmi Note 3/3Pro/Note 4 users and not exactly the one that I'm having right now.

so, you want to transfer your files from the MiA1 to your PC, am I correct?!
if yes
when you connect the phone via the USB-C
check the top left icon (a circle or some sort) on your phone
swipe down
at the very bottom of the notification window you should see Android System USB charging this device (and an arrow pointing below)
click it
tap for more options
then another screen pop up
Use USB to: choose Transfer files
then just go to the windows explorer on you PC as usual..
apology if that is not what you seek :victory: or the notification itself does not automatically pop up on your phone.. I do hope you'll find the best solution..

Sorry Buddy You Don't Understand....
The Problem that people are facing in here is that there aren't any options to choose from the top notification bar to select the option of Charging, mtp,PTP etc.
And the options that are available on developer option they are not working.

Cleaning the port doesn't help.I will try reflashing the stock ROM multiple times (testing in between) until it works.
I'll let you know whatever happens.

Yes I did that also. I might as well suspect that it is modem's fault but we'll see.
May flash a different modem, there are some flashable zips on afh.

Is the way to solve this problem found ?????
I experienced the same but i've managed to fix it.
Here are some fixes:
1.If you're on a Custom ROM i suggest Clean Flash it and don't install any magisk modules
2.Uninstall YouTube Vanced if you flashed it.
3.Try if your PC reads your phone on Fastboot mode so you can confirm that the cable and the port is working
