ICS 4.0.3 Wifi - Setting Static IP not possible? - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 General

I turned on wifi but was unable to access / change my IP to a static IP . I couldnt find the option under wifi - advanced as well. The new options allow me only to change my Signal Band (2.4gz/5gz) but not change my IP address or put a static IP.
Any thoughts?

It's right there
Press and hold your connected access point
Check Show advanced options
Click IP settings and change from DHCP to Static
Enter your IP/DNS

thanks i also had a problem but now i can enter my ip but the save button is unfortunately greyed out so stuck up in getting ip address can anyone help
ps: figured it out now working
thanks

saving of static IP is now per network instead of per wifi interface.

still not able to assign static ip

Is this also the case with proxy server? I have an Asus Transformer on ICS that allows me to save Proxy per access point, and I'm hoping the GNote will also do this on ICS.

Just checked myself, glad to see this!
Long press on the network you want to change, click 'Modify network config'
Then you need to change the 'IP settings' pull down box from DHCP to Static, otherwise the rest will remain greyed out.
Hope thats all clear.

I have had the same problem.

Wouldn't is be a better option to have your router reserve a specific IP address for the MAC address of your Note? That way you won't have to change the settings on your Note when you want to connect to a different network.

It would, but that's a bit too technical for most users, as it requires going into advanced settings of your router. Most people don't even know their routers IP address, let alone configure MAC-level access!
Also the default setting is for DHCP on all networks, so the user doesn't have to worry when connecting to any network.
In ICS, they have introduced the option of allowing different IP settings for each network. In previous android versions, you could only have 1 global setting that affected all networks.
I like to use a static IP on my home network, but every over network I connect to requires DHCP. So previously, I had to disable Static IP to access other networks (or use an app called Wifi static!).
It's no wonder I was confused 'Wifi static' was no longer working

With the long press stuff --> modify network and add the static IP, it seems not work for me. My phone is a samsung galaxy s3.
Do u think the phone need to be rooted to gain superior access privilegde?
And my setup network @home is ad-hoc. So cant reserve any ip on a router.
Kind regards
Takeur

if by "not work" you mean that you can't see an option to change from DHCP to static, it may simply be because the on-screen keyboard automatically appears at that setup page (so you can enter a password) and it obscures the options further down the page.
So, you need to:
1. long press on your connection to go into "modify network config"
2. press capacitive "back" key (or click "done") to reveal the bottom of the page
3. check the "show advanced" tick box
4. scroll down beyond the visible part of the page to get to DHCP setting.

here's my solution on my note ICS
1. long press wifi connection, enter your network password
2. change dhcp to static
3. fill ip address of your device
4. FILL NETWORK PREFIX OF YOUR STATIC WIFI NETWORK (NETWORK PREFIX is substitution of NETMASK ADDRESS (eg 255.255.255.255) see table here ttp://gabbtech.blogspot.com/2012/09/subnet-mask-address-dan-persamaannya.html
5. fill other requirement (gateway,dns,etc)
6. You should be able to click greyed out SAVE button now

Where are the WIFI settings held??

I wish to know -- where are the WIFI settings held-(I do a lot of tweaking for my HD and sometimes I mess it up, but the guy who knows wifi password of my place, lives in Garkalne, Im in Adazi ( about 10 km difference)--my wifi goes only about 20m )
So I need to backup my wifi settings or atleast the password -- where is the password held -- in registry, windows, anywere --- just name it and how to get there!!??
well access your wireless router with the provided ip address.
i think it may be 192.168.1.1 and you will easily see it around wireless security.

Sorry -- I didnt understand that --- can you give me a step by step
My wifi network is password protected it has two networks 1.- provides internet, password protected.;;;;; 2.- doesnt provide internet, not password protected, Its for those cases when he forgets the password for the 1st network so he can bypass it and go straight to the internet-- I dont know how he does it
Im still learning English
The security information is stored within your WIFI router.
As to how to access and maintain it, it varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. I have five different ADSL modem/router in the past few years and all of them has different way of getting into the configuraiton menu. Some needs me to type in 10.1.1.1, the others uses different address. You need to refer to your user manual for your equipment (if you can't find it , make a call to your ISP's support center, and they will definitely be able to tell you).
Once you're in the configuration menu. navigating to the place where the security setting is kept again differ in each case, and again you should read your user manual to find out, or call up your ISP's support centre for help.

It's in Start/setting/connection/WIFI/Advance.
The Main tab lets you change which WIFI network you want to connect to. When you click on change network, you can pick whichever one that shows as available. Once you click on it, if that access points requires Authentication, by clicking the next button you will specify all the details such as network key, etc.
Hope this is what you're looking for.
The power mode tab lets you specify if you want more performance or battery life
----> when I enter the password for the wifi network-- I wish to know where my THD saves the password----the guy who knows wifi password doesnt give it to me so I want to find it on my device---where is it saved on blackstone
Ok i think everyone is confused now.
Please explain in detail what you want to do again.
He doesn't know the wifi password to "his" network because the guy who knows the password won't give it to him.
He's asking if a plaintext version of the password is saved in the Touch HD somewhere for "his" network.
I find it a little sus that he doesn't know the password for "his" own network, or that the person who set it up won't give him the password, so he's trying to find it this way.

Hack to make web browsing faster...

This hack has been around forever but I figured I would mention it because surprisingly few people know about it:
DO THIS:
Settings > Wireless > Wifi Settings > Menu (Button) > Advanced > Use Static IP (check this) > DNS1 Settings (set to 208.67.222.222) > DNS2 Settings (set to 208.67.220.220) > Reboot
Not all roms will allow you to access this, but if yours does, give it a try.
WHAT IT DOES:
When you enter a name like Amazon in your browser, before going to Amazon it needs to translate "Amazon" into an IP address. This can be SLOOOOW. By setting your DNS servers, you give it one single IP address to go to for all IP address translations - i.e., it's faster.
This is an old PC hack and I wasn't sure it would work on a phone but we tried it out over at another forum and everyone was getting MUCH faster page opens in their browsers. Many said their Market was working faster too.
Give it a shot and see what you think. Good luck
** Read more about it here: https://store.opendns.com/setup/
Oh yeah, it's free so no worries.
Wont you run into problems if you move off your home network. Some networks wont give you the static ip you want.

Dunno. Seemed to have sped up my 3G as well. If it doesn't work you can just uncheck the static ip thing when away from home.

Yea that's what I figured. Also I use google dns. 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 its easier to remember.

eh most of the time you wont have to jump more than 1 or 2 DNS servers to sort your IP, than that IP is sent down those on the way back to you for future reference(until a hold down timer expires most likely)
gosh, hope that makes sense =P

Nevertheless, this is faster.
OP, your link leads to a website that appears to require a sign-up to continue, is there a link that doesn't?
Also, while I can see how this may help with a Wi-Fi signal, how is it you've experienced faster 3G? Just curious, thanks.
First, this isnt a hack
Second, you're changing dns for your wifi, not 3g.
Thanks for the reminder though, but does any know if you can change your 3g dns?

##data(3282)# / edit mode / there are plenty of settings to mess with here (and mess things up too, but here is where you can find what you are looking for)
btw... you will need your msl to enter edit mode
I wouldn't go around fooling with the sprint default dns it could cause problems.
Isn't that the opendns ip? Who cares... this is not a hack... at all. I use 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 anyway.

You don't have to sign up, just use the DNS addresses given:
DNS1: 208.67.222.222
DNS2: 208.67.220.220
That's all you need.
LOL at people thinking hard setting dns servers = hacking.
Setting up DNS does not speed up browsing. It might speed up the initial resolving of the website if the current dhcp dns server is slow.
Thanks for the good laugh tho.
Now if somebody could post how to change WiMAX DNS servers, that would be much more interesting... for a variety of reasons...

[Q] [B]Static IP for Tab/[B]

Can someone please post a step by step procedure for putting a static IP into
my Tab 500?
instructions for static IP relevant on my tab version, android 3.1 (4.010.11_COM_GEN2):
open up wifi networks and settings. Find your network you wish to connect to and long hold it. Select Modify Network. Select IP Settings drop down and change from DHCP to Static. Scroll down again and type in your own IP addressing schema for the IP address and Gateway. Don't forget to add a network prefix length, even if you simply type in the suggested 24. I recommend using your ISP's DNS servers unless you are trying to use DNS for filtering and protection (such as opendns).

Thanks for prompt reply. What does 'long hold" mean? My Tab does not ever get
an IP assigned to it by DHCP, so I want to try a static IP to get wi fi working.
I will try your procedure when I get home from work today and will post results.
You're welcome. By long hold, i simply mean to tap the setting and hold it for a moment rather than let go right away. I am sure there is an official term for that, it just escapes me at the moment.

Thanks again. I'll try a Factory Reset first. Then, if that doesn't work, I will try a static IP address.
Problem solved. Static IP not required.
I tried the Factory Reset from the settings menu. It took a few minutes to reset and reboot. A s soon as I went to the Wi-Fi settings, it found my router, got great signal strength, and was asked for my password. It then connected immediately.
I then went to settings, and looked for any updates. It found the latest update, so I downloaded and installed OS v3.1. It took about 1 hour to complete the download and installation. My tab works great now. I could not be more pleased with it.
Many thanks to all on this forum and elsewhere who contributed their suggestions and advice.

Use your router settings to do it, add a reserved IP address for your nexus 4.
IF you want to do it on the phone just long press the network, click modify, then show advanced options, then change IP address to static instead of DHCP

Samsung Theme Store don't show preview

When i go to the Samsung Theme Store and find a theme, there are no previews.
Have you see this behaivor?
I HAD the same problem and I have found the solution on forums.androidcentral.com. I can't post a link here, so here is the whole post from Mr. Raj Pyakurel:
Firstly, turn on yr wifi. Let it connect to yr SSID or wifi network. Long press over it. U can find it in yr wifi settings. After long pressing over the name of wifi or also known as SSID;
Go to: modify network config.
Click on: show advanced options.
Scroll down n change IP settings field from DHCP to STATIC.
Scroll down n go to DNS 1 n DNS 2 fields only.
Change it.
DNS1: 8.8.8.8
DNS2: 4.4.4.4
save it.
Note: Do not change any other fields.
If it didn't work, don't change DNS1 and change DNS2 to 8.8.8.8
and save it.
Additionally, u can change it directly from your router' s DHCP settings.
I hope it will definitely fix yr problem. Enjoy.
Let me know if it helped you too. Greetings, LadyGothes
