I just bought a nook color. Now I am thinking should I root/Custom rom my NC. I have other android devices and I know how to mess with android hacking. I have reading from quite a few days about nook development but I am so confused. I have few questions?
1) Advantage on rooting Nook? If i root my NC, will i have everything same but i will also have access to android market and all the apps?
2) Every guide talks about SD card...can anyone point to a suitable SD card which i can buy to use for rooting and custom roms? I mean like which company and size etc...
3) best and easiest way to root the NOOk. (I saw many methods and i am confused)
Thanks in advance...its much appreciated....
It has been answered so MANY times before and I even lost count.
Help us and help yourself by doing some searches.
1. I didn't root my NOOK so i don't know all the advantages but put it this way: bone stock NC is like you are being handcuffed and rooted one is like you are being free.
2. Most likely Sandisk class 4, either 8GB or 16GB.
Note: the Sandisk brand is good for running CM7/9 off it. If you are just need one for rooting, any 1GB would do the job.
3. There is only one way to root the NC, afaik, that's using either (or) ManualNooter or AutoNooter.
My recommendation is RUNNING CM7.2 off the uSD. Get used to it, get the feel of it before actually ripping the NC apart and install custom ROM into eMMC.

Oh, and btw, don't confuse "rooting" and "installing custom ROM"
Thanks a lot...I feel your frustration but trust me i tried to search a lot but you know how things gets lost in threads. This really helps me to move forward...
On XDa, whenever I get new android device I go back to feeling like noob....but most phones works in same way....Nook is little different so thats I was confused....
"Oh, and btw, I know the difference between "rooting" and "custom rom"......I thought once i start with rooting..It will be easy to figure out installing custom rom...
Much appreciated...

In the case of the Nook it is equally easy to do either. Unless you need to have the B&N stock layout I suggest skipping rooting and going straight to a custom ROM. The Nook will be much more tablet like that way.
As suggested you can try out CM7 or CM9 on a bootable SD card first to see how you like it while leaving the internal memory totally stock. Simply insert the card and boot to run the custom ROM or remove the card and boot to return to the stock OS.
You will find yourself forgetting all about the stock OS in a week once you try a custom ROM (unless you need one of its few unique features such as "read to me").
Here is a step by step to creating a bootable SD card with a link back to verygreen's original thread. There are others here too but since you wanted a specific link here you go http://www.androidtablets.net/forum/nook-color-technical/13156-how-cm7-bootable-sd.html

Hey NOOKERS!
Got my wife a nook for Mothers Day. Had to fly out of the country the next day and never got around to doing more than charge it up for her.
She does not want to touch it until I can "hack" it to allow it to be an android tablet with both B&N books and Kindle, plus of course all the web browsing / music playing stuff.
I'm fairly comfortable, having messed with both my Samsung Moment and my Epic too.
But -
Is there a guide? Step by Step to go from a STOCK 1.2 device to Cyanogenmod7, and then back again if she hates it and I need to return it?
Interested in getting an answer on this too, particularly if there is a way to reverting back to stock, even tho I already rooted with manual nooter then flashed CM7.....
And so I guess... we WAIT.

Getting back to stock should be as simple as building a CWR bootable SD card with one of these images:
http://mrm3.net/nook-color-updated-clockwork-recovery-bootable-sd/
Then booting into CWR, formatting the applicable partitions, flashing the stock 1.2 Rom that's been posted in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1050520
Now, I'm pretty new to this stuff, but I think that should work. I installed Phiremod on my NC this weekend following the above procedure.
Thanks for the links, and I'll surly look at them - but I can't afford an "I think it should work".
I need steps that WILL work (unless I pour coffee into it while I'm doing the process...)
You should install CM7 on a bootable SD card. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1000957
If you don't like it, remove the card, and you are back to stock.

Post #4 from my second link gives instructions:

Basically same thing I told you.
Ok. trying it from an SD card.
Question - if I want to go ahead and Root/Install this to the NOOK itself, can I somehow keep all the setup that wife does to the OS on the SD card?
I can wright a guild tonight some time and post it up I have done this a ton of times back and forth from 1.2/cm7 and dual booting cm7 and 1.2 lol my nook has been all over the place... lol I'm a flashaholic
Thanks to all who contributed!!!

Looking forward to seeing it!
Wife is loving it, but now I guess I want to take what she's been playing with and put it on the "device" instead of the SD card, so she can use the SD card to store music and other stuff.
But I really do need the "set it back to normal" capability too, so that if the damn thing messes up horribly some how I can get it warranty repaired. I just don't have that kind of free $ to "throw it away"...
@n0xx187 -
Any update on your little guide?
Thanks!
Hey amigo... just checkin in to see how that guide is coming!
I'm looking forward to seeing a guide as well since I've forgotten the steps I took with my Nook pre-1.2, and am ready to install CM7 on a Nook for my friend.
For instructions on how to install CM7 on your internal drive in the Nook (EMMC):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1030227
Also contains a link to the directions to restore your nook to stock 1.2 (there is a different guide for previous revs, but you said 1.2):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1050520
The two zips linked there differ in that 1 uninstalls CWM assuming you have it flashed to EMMC, and the other doesn't.
I've used both guides (installed CM7 to EMMC, reverted to stock 1.2 and removed CWM, installed a different nightly of CM7, etc) and they are straightforward and take you every step of the way as long as you understand the terminology involved (emmc vs SD) and can follow directions without skipping steps.
If you are wanting to dual boot that is a completely different beast and there are threads for it in the Development sub-forum here.
Just a caveat - you won't be able to use the B&N native ereader app in CM7, and the nook for android app is having some issues right now that haven't been corrected yet (menu insensitivity, some people report that syncing to their library is failing), so if that's important to your wife that's a consideration vs rooting stock B&N (that in and of itself has issues just like any of the roms for the Nook Color, you can read up on them in their own threads (manual nooter, mini nooter, autonooter, etc))

Thanks. The wife has hundreds of KINDLE books, has yet to buy one from B&N. The purpose of this process is to enable BOTH on this cool little device.
And the "guide" we've been looking for is "How do I take what's installed on the flash card" (she's been using CM7 from a 2gb flash) and MOVE it to the EMMC. (and of course, return it to stock if something goes wrong in a horrible way.)

Ah, I had read your OP and assumed things hadn't changed (my bad, read further down and saw that you installed CM7 to SD).
In this case, you could use Titanium Backup to back up all the apps + app data and restore them to the new install on EMMC - I wouldn't back up system data however. It would require minimal re-setup (cyanogenmod settings, some system settings) but would retain launcher settings (desktop, status bar, dock, etc) because the app info would be saved in a backup. You would have to copy separate user data manually (e.g., transferring folders in USB storage mode to your PC and back to your Nook after installing CM7).
I do not know if a nandroid backup / restore would work if you are switching from CM7 SD to EMMC. I prefer using TiBu since youc an choose to transfer only apps + app data on a fresh CM7 install.

If you're running a NOOK Color with 1.2, didn't you run into "error formatting /data"? If so, how did you get past it?
Mine came with the original 1.1 firmware., which I updated to 1.2 from the downloaded file...
but I am hearing things about re-partitioning and things on new ones... does that impact "upgraded" ones?
I have a new Nook Color that I tried to turn into a tablet using a guide on another site. I don't know what I messed up or where but instead of only having the new OS on the memory card it overwrote the Nook itself.
After I start the Nook Color it says Welcome to LogicPDZoom2 and wants me to to some setup.
I want to revert this nook back to how it was from the factory so I can restart the entire process after reading how here.
Will someone with compassion help me out?
You're new here, but you'll see this reply a lot. Please search before you post new threads...please. You'll find your answer mapped out in perfect detail in the thread below, which I found by searching the words restore and stock.

On a more friendly note, welcome aboard, I think you'll find the nook color to be a magnificent piece of equipment. When you're ready to venture into something better than stock again I'd recommend using the guide below to try out CM7.

Don't be afraid to play a little as your confidence grows, the nook is pretty much unbrickable, and there are some beautiful technical minds in this community who have enabled us to do wonderful things.
I saw that thread but it references NC 1.0.1 and I was not sure if it was safe to use 1.0.1 on a 1.1.0 system. I'm still holding off until I can find a 1.1.0 image.

Doesn't matter which stock you install, as you will get the 1.2 update (or you can go to B&N and download it manually).
That is very good to know. I was afraid of causing more issues by putting an older stock than it shiped with on it.
I was able to do the reversion and update the system to 1.2 and then install Cyanogen 7 onto a memory card but I'm getting timeouts
The time outs seem cusred by switching from a 16GB PNY card to a 16GB Sandisk card
Hi everyone,
I'm new to this and sorry if some of my questions are redundant, but can anyone tell me their experiences with hacking the Nook Color? I'm still deciding on getting it and I want to put Cyanogenmod 7(Gingerbread) in it( if I buy one), but I'm not 100 percent sure. Can someone tell me if it's easy, hard, any complications, etc? Also any links or information on how to dual boot it( is that the one where it doesn't void your warranty?) would be greatly appreciated.
Sorry for all the noobness.
Welcome! There are a lot of threads here and in the Android Development sub-forum on getting started along with answers to most of your questions. See this post of mine for links on getting CM7 installed:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=16779145#post16779145
Frankly, everyone here will say that the nook is pretty awesome, especially with CM7. It's quite easy. The first time you install it might take a while (under 1 hour easy), but after a while it could really be done in a few minutes. At this point you just need to copy files mostly. Technically, I think running CM7 could void your warranty, but that said, the Nook is nearly unbrickable. You can pretty much always restore to stock if need be. The safest way to get started is to follow the SD card method from the link above.
Good luck!
It's just like learn how to swim or learn how to ride a bike.
No one ever able to do and do good first time, it takes time, always.
Someone picks things up fairly quick, some others learn at slower pace but they all get better at some points.
The only requirements are able to read and understand English and able to follow the instruction then you're off to go .......... and go far.
Lastly, if I can do it, you can do it.
Look into starting from the SDCard install options, before overwriting internal memory. If something goes wrong, you simply power off, remove the SDCard, and power up again, and you have your stock Nook Color working perfectly.
In my sig, click the link to "SD Install" for the best way to prep the MicroSD card for whatever ROM you want.
I highly recommend CM7, it's simply the best thing going for it. Again, installing to the MicroSD card is a painless way to test it out, links in verygreen's thread.
Make sure you have a SanDisk card, links in my sig to find out why if you're curious.
To this day, I still have my stock Nook Color B&N software updated and running on the internal memory - but for the life of me I can't figure out why I haven't taken the step to move CM7 to internal at this point. It's that good.
Point being, with a SanDisk MicroSD card, and CM7 installed to it, you really unlock the powerful user experience this device is capable of. Best part is, it's not a permanent thing. You simply power off, remove the MicroSD card, then power back up and you are back to stock.
Easy, painless, and tons of fun.
Thank You so much everyone for the responses. Sorry if I took too long to reply. I'm going to read over the directions right now Oh and do anyone have the list of some of the words? I'm still new to this and I don't know what "partition" or "kernel" means.
partition = dedicated space for specific usage.
kernel = sets of drivers, it is a brain of the ROM
i was a new nook owner and new to rooting as well. i had no trouble with following instructions and have been very happy with the outcome. it also helps to read a lot of other posts to see what issues may arise and how to fix things. as long as you can follow instructions properly its a breeze
Thank You all so much. I got one more question, I've been reading somewhere online that it's possible that you can go back to the original version of the nook without having to remove the SD card, and I just want to confirm if this is possible? If it's can you give me a link? Thank You sorry for so much question

On the newer nightlies, you can press the nook 'n' button while the first green cyanogenmod logo is showing and it will take you to a boot menu. You can then select to boot from emmc (internal) or the sd card, and also choose normal or recovery mode.
Sorry about this but 1 more small question, will bn update( i think ota) affect the rooted nook? If so, can you tell me how to fix it?

I'm adept enough and have modded systems before, but I don't really have the time to research all the info...
Basically, I'm offering $$$ to an 'expert' to handhold me via Skype, Google+ or whateva through installing a custom rom/kernel on my tab.
It's an Acer Iconia A500, 8gb.
I downloaded the OTA 4.0.3 update and rooted via Blackthund3r 1-click (with only the default option checked).
So at this point, I have full root and gather that I (at least) need to, in some particular order:
1) Install Clockwork Recovery
2) Backup ROM and/or whatever else
3) Clean install, full wipe, format
4) Install a custom ICS bootloader
5) Install custom ROM/kernel
I'd also like to extend the main partition onto SD (as much as poss... 1 gb?).
I've hit up a few ppl on Craigslist to try getting it done, but out of 4, 3 never got back to me and the 4th claimed there was a 50/50 chance of bricking. For personal reasons, this particular tab is very important to me and taking ANY chance on bricking w/o being able to recover is a deal killer. But with that said, this and other forums make it seem completely stable if done correctly. If any gurus wanna make a few bucks, pls PM me.
Also - I was leaning toward the Lightspeed ROM... anyone have an opinion on this vs. others?
THX!

Will do it for free knowledge is free there is always going to be a chance of bricking but not 50/50 just make sure you have a full back up and you cpuid......personally ide go with flex reapers but that's just me pm me if you want help as for the extending the main partition im not sure i know you could soft mod it so you micro SD card become your internal and your default download place on honeycomb...hope this helps

u, sir, rawk
If you have full root then your pretty much done, just go to the market and install Acer recovery tool. There is a topic about in the apps section

Moving to Q&A
Ive just recently aquired one of these and I'm trying to factory reset it. I'm afraid to use the erase and deregister cuz I don't want to get locked out if I don't have some certain info or whatever... Is that the best way to make it like you just turned it on for the first time?
Maybe someone can point me to a specific thread that explains how custom recovery boot loaders work on this thing and what not. I'm just not sure where to begin. I'm searching, but I'm seeing stuff like burn cm7 to an sdcard? I could just blindly follow those steps, but I don't wanna brick this thing. Is there a thread that gives a crash course on how things work with this device?
It would be nice to have cm7 on here though. Is it Android to begin with? I've got a rooted modded s4 currently, but this nook looks like it might work a bit differently. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The erase and deregister is the best way to get back to the way it came in the box. Make sure you are connected to wifi when you do it. It will remove it from the prior owners registration. Then you can register it in your name. (You did not say, but I am assuming you got this second hand).
Go to my NC Tips thread linked in my signature to learn a little more about this device. It does not all have to be read, but some sections will help you a lot.
And stock is Android (Froyo, Android 2.2), but heavily modified by B&N.
Look for eyeballer's thread on how to put CM7 on internal memory replacing stock. See here:

Thanks a lot man. I'll check this out. And yes I did get this second hand.
Does anyone know a good place to get magazines and books that are compatible with this?
Are torrents updated frequently with new titles and monthly copies of a lot of magazines? I don't even know what file format the books should be in. But I'll read the info you suggested, above me... Thanks again
