Looking to upgrade and get the Defy + as I am nearly out on my contract on my original defy and have had it for 2 years now.
Was looking on buying a defy + and taking it to Canada and get a sim over there to use. Just wanted to know if I can use the baseband switcher and use my defy I am going to purchase in England abroad in Canada.
Don't want to pay lots of money and find out it will be ineffective in Canada.
All help appreciated.
Baseband switcher only helps in changing your baseband to make it compatible with any country sim. It doesnt unlocks your cell for enabling your cell to use any other sim.

To save yourself from trouble you should buy the unlocked defy+. But if you get the locked one, you could try to unlock it on swiftunlock.net for a few bucks.
Even the cheapest phone that you can't use, costs a lots of money
No its not locked to a certain provider. I was just wondering does a English phone work in Canada. It's unlocked, so your saying it will work? If I just change the baseband to I think it will be international baseband. There isn't a Canada baseband I don't think.
So in theory buy a phone here (unlocked) And change the baseband so it works in Canada and use a Canadian providers sim. Thanks for all the help.
Defy + has a quad-band witch means you can use it (pretty much) all over the world. Worse case scenario, what I certainly doubt, you'll have to use a baseband switcher.
What about the Defy. Can that be used in Canada too? Is it a quad band phone? Might save my self a few pounds and keep my original defy.
Thanks for the help guys.

But of course it can. Defy+ is (to put it simple) slightly modified defy with larger battery capacity. You could, for just in case, install baseband switcher before you sail away . Keep in mind that your defy has to be rooted for that.
Have a good trip
When I try to change frequencies with cyanogen baseband settings, the phone loses signal. I tried with basebandswitcher also, but didn't work, they didn't change frequencies and the phone lost signal. Do you know why?
I have a Defy+ with cm9:
CM9-NIGHTLY-120516-Defy+.zip (Epsylon3 version)
With cm7 occurs the same.
The cellphone settings box says: WCDMA 900/2100 but i am trying to change it to 850/1900 (Colombia setting). Motorola Defy+ is QuadBand in HSDPA? Should these programs work with Defy+? Thanks
Maybe you should try fix for Argentina users from this thread.

Hey guys
I have one of the Telstra Galaxy Tabs, and basically want to work a few things out with it.
First off I gather, with mention of all the carrier-specific or gsm/CDMA Specific ROMs, this has something to do with a radio or some such being included?
The Telstra "Next G" Network, which the Tab is used on, is basically 3g on 850mhz. Which of the types would this come under?
I have "Some" experience with flashing/ROMs/etc, namely on my Desire, so I am no expert by any means (Defo wanting to learn, and have learnt a lot from here so far ) but I do have a small amount of experience.
Thanks guys.
So, the community round here will answer questions for people that have obviously not bothered to search and ask the same stupid crap over and over and over, yet someone who has done a LOT of research, and is legitimately confused over a terminology issue (because technically it ISNT GSM or CDMA if you learn how the networks actually work) and just wants a simple answer to a simple question, just gets totally ignored?

GSM radio hardware is largely irrelevant, the hardware does the heavy lifting, the firmware doesn't care that it is, as long as it supports the right protocols.
Telstra uses a GSM/HSDPA/WCDMA network. In most cases, this is the case if your device has a SIM card.
The Tab sold here is essentially the standard UK version. If Telstra has an 850/2100Mhz HSDPA version then that could potentially be different. If you can root it using SuperOneClick, then run a complete firmware backup and try updating with another GSM firmware (e.g. RotoHammers JME) and see how you go. Before doing so, check that the device is unlocked, check if it can be rooted, determine the existing firmware/modem versions and the CSC version. It may be a custom firmware, it may not.
Your "LOT of research" was obviously fairly deficient if it hadn't ruled out Telstra using a CDMA network. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telstra

Hey mate, i have a telstra tab, on original firmware (jj3 i think) i would only ever get 3g..
After flashing rotos jme + the phone.bin, i now get hspa most the time.
Rotos firmware works perfectly, but as always backup everything

Well, The network you are referencing is actually the "Telstra 3g" Network used only in the capital cities around here. The network my Tab is used on/made for is the "Next G" Network. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Next_G is the specific network. As you can see, it is technically not GSM at all, it is UMTS, and actually replaced our old CDMA network. So, this is where my confusion was coming in. But, if I have this correct, it is used as a basic term, meaning GSM = Sim Card and CDMA = No Sim Card (like our old CDMA network, phone itself is coded to the number/network type thing, which to be honest I didn't realise still even existed) yeah?
Cheers for clearing that up
As for the freqs, if I do a *#2263# the 3 WCDMA bands that are starred are 850mhz 1900mhz and 2100mhz. The GSM Fallback shows GSM 850 GSM 900 DCS 1800 PCS 1900 all starred. (Yes I did realise this before, I explained why I was confused with the terms hehe) The main band I have to worry about really is 850mhz though, on the WCDMA side, as you would have seen from the link.
Well, the device can be rooted with Z4Root at least, that is what I have used to root the device. This is exactly what I intend to try, once I am sure I understand everything. Does not hurt to read and re-read until one is definately comfortable with the steps, and I like to understand what every part is that I am doing.

Just to be 100% sure, that is the one here? And you are on the Next G Network? (I assume so with the 850mhz band etc, I thought this would work, but doesn't hurt to be sure I am looking at the right one you are talking about hehe.)
I can confirm the original firmware is JJ3, with phone calling capabilities etc.
Of course, backups always come first, always.
Thank you heaps for the info.
Also, if there is any part of this device's firmware etc that would be helpful in any way to the devs, I would be happy to extract anything needed from a rotobackup or whatever. I won't be flashing it straight away, and definately not before a full backup anyway.

Hey, not trying to hijack this thread, although I too just got a SGT for the wife from Optus this morning and playing around with it and keen to hack.
Mine came with the following
PDA : P1000XWJJ4
PHONE : P1000XXJID
CSC : P1000OPSJJ3
Build Time : 2010.10.16 20:35:06 KST
Changelist : 639474
Firmware 2.2
Kernel Version : 2.6.32.9
Keen to know what is the best rom for us here down under, i'm, off to root me SGT.
Cheers

For the optus tab any euro rom will work i started with the modaco rom and kernal then moved to the overcome rom and kernal. Both ran prefectly just make a backup to be safe.

Next is off to grab overcome rom, will try and do a backup but only have a 1G card atm
Again thanks and sorry to the OP for the hijack

This may sound like a stupid question, but I have the defy and am planning on buying a Galaxy Nexus. This is something I´ve always wondered, but now it´s more of a concern since I´m buying a GNex from the US (Unlocked, unblocked and unblured!!) and am planning to use it in Argentina. So the doubt came up:
1-)Why does the Motorola Defy need a baseband switcher (if supposedly it´s a Quad band phone)?
2-)Do other phones (like the Google GNex) need to switch basebands as well to work in other countries/areas?

Its needed when running a custom ROM. The custom ROM's need that as the communication channel of the service providers vary. Baseband switcher, in a sense calibrate your radio to a particular range of frequencies.
As for GNexus, If you run it on stock, and its unlocked,I don't think you'll need a baseband switcher.
I did a search, but nothing found for my question. Does the MB525 support all frequencies? I have one I bought new when they came out for T-Mobile US, and I know it needs the 1700 frequency for 3/4G speeds, but I'm looking to get another one, but all the ones I see don't have that frequency listed. My question is do all MB525s support all frequencies? I'm rooted on my original one, and I've used the baseband switcher from CM7, and I see I can select all different "world" frequencies, so If I buy one that is say 900/2100 on the box, can I root, and use the baseband switcher to choose 1700 for T-Mobile? Or would I be stuck on 2G forever with it?
Yeah it should work, although I'm not 100% sure

It works out of the box.
I picked a new one up from Ebay. It said it was unlocked, and supported all frequencies. I put my sim card in, set T-Mo APN, and I got 3G out of the box. No need for the baseband switcher. I'm happy now. I got me a brand new Defy. I didn't even know they are still being made (Or at least as recent as mine). I thought since it's over a two year old phone, and there is already the Defy+ and Defy Mini, that the good old original Defy was done production. Mine was just made 3/2012 by the manufacturing date on it. Great news for anyone looking to keep this phone going in case yours is starting to breakdown. There are a lot of new ones out there. It's all black and unbranded, and comes with 2.2.2. I'll be keeping my original one just in case, and I may pick some more up at the price I paid. US $168.00 shipped.
Yes, with the baseband switcher you can select every frequency.
So its Quadband
Wish they would have had that for old Nokia symbian phones
My carrier uses 900/1800 baseband. I tickled through all regions and carriers and didn't find 900/1800. The closest option is 900/2100. How to add 900/1800 baseband to baseband selector?
Then perhaps you can use either 3g or 2g, not both depending on which baseband you select

I'm not sure what version of the Baseband Switcher you are using, but the one I have doesn't show that frequency at all, and I can't find it on any other ones. Here is the link to the one I have. Maybe you can contact the Dev to see if 900/1800 can be added. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1052745
EDIT - Just to be clear the OP in that thread does say new ones can be added. This is from the thread: "If anybody needs other basebands included, copy the folder /system/etc/motorola/bp_nvm_default from your Defy, zip it, post a zip here and write down out of wich rom it is and for which country it is.
If anybody wants to add new Languages, PM me the translationlist + what Language it is."
Good luck.

Hello all, I just bought a Defy mb525 green lens off amazon. I'm in the United States and my sim card is from T-mobile. The phone is from south american (not sure which country)
With the stock rom everything worked fine.. but after i installed cm10 all i got was emergency calls only. I tried all the T-mobil basebands.. as well as every other baseband.. not once did i ever get a signal of any kind.. at one point my phone detected at&t but still had no signal..
I then tried cm7 but had the same result..
I then tried stock cee just to settle on something that works but got rid of blur.. but still had no signal..
If you live in the United States and are on t-mobile wat baseband do you use? Could the issue be with different hardware due to the phone being made for south America? (although with the stock rom i have a great signal) Any comments or suggestions would be much appreciated..
Thanks in advance,
Eman

I have a similar issue with a Defy MB525 that I bought as a refurb from Amazon just a couple of weeks ago.
When I received it, it seemed to be set up with Spanish as it's primary language...
Anyhow I reflashed it with a motorola sbf file that allegedly was for Tmobile USA and had Android 2.2.
Then I rooted it and loaded up CyangenMod 7.2...
I have a SIM from Lycamobile USA, which rides on the Tmobile network.
Before fiddling with the various baseband selections available via CM7.2 I could not make any calls
Phone info, baseband version:EPU93_U_00.59.01
Partial solution.
Tried all of the TMobile/USA baseband settings - no joy.
In desparation tried some of the SouthAmerican settings and the Asian settings...
The best of the lot seems to be Asia/China/ME722 1.10 850/1900/2100
Which works okay and gets an "all bars" signal for me - for Voice and Edge data.
I suspect this setting works because T-Mobile operates Voice and Edge on 1900Mhz in my area.
Also, in some areas, I get "emergency call only", which is probably on the 850 band that belongs to AT&T.
Problem
I don't get any 3G service. That's probably because, as I understand it, 3G for t-mobile is using 1700/2100 (up/down or vice-versa)
and my radio isn't set up to use the 1700 Mhz band.
Question
Can I fix this with a reflash of firmware - to exploit "quad" band operation 850/1700/1900/2100? Which are all in use by Tmobile and/or AT&T in the USA, according to various Wikipedia articles.
If so, which firmware should I load?
If not, is this a hardware limitation of the Defy MB525? Some builds/versions? Or all versions/builds?

I use the Colombian frequencies, better battery life than Chinese. But yeah, occasionally on some stock builds I wouldn't get any signal. If you're in South America, try using the Retail ROM for Latin America. More specifically "JORLA_U3_3.4.2_108-2_R02_SIGNED_USAJORDMR1B25RETLALA01F.0R_JORLAFRORETLALA_P008_A005_M001_HWp3_WIG147146_Service1FF", which is the one I'm on now.
And no, in most countries you won't get 3g, since this is a hardware issue. I get 3G in Ecuador, but that is only because Movistar here uses 850mhz band for UMTS. Another option would be to sell your Defy and find a Argentina Personal Defy which uses 800/1900, or buy a European Defy that uses 900/2100, since I think in almost every South American country there is at least one carrier that uses those frequencies.
But T-Mobile's defy in South America, as far as I know, will only get you 3G in Ecuador.
EDIT: Misunderstood the post, wasn't paying attention , but my point is still valid. It's a hardware issue.

I'm visiting Melrose MA today and I'm seeing an HSPA signal! Still with the "China" settings...
Speedtest.net says I got:
Code:
Date,ConnType,Lat,Lon,Download,Upload,Latency,ServerName,InternalIp,ExternalIp
"2013-06-21 15:32","Hspa","42.45245","-71.06685",1388,988,282,"Boston, MA","10.230.130.121","83.137.2.146"
"2013-06-20 07:49","Edge","41.33962","-73.37708",198,112,467,"Secaucus, NJ","10.230.142.199","83.137.2.147"
While the "Network Signal Info" app says I'm HSPA at 14.4 Mbps, I guess that's a max.
Soo... this is good, but I'm still curious -- how can I determine which band(s) the radio is operating on?
According to Wikipedia, T-mobile runs HSPA on the 1900Mhz band in some areas and 1700/2100 in others...
Since I set my radio to 850/1900/2100 - my first guess is I've wandered into a 1900/1900 HSPA zone...
My connection is to CID13693382 / LAC 36498 MCC-MNC 310-260 Is there a database where I can find out what frequencies are assigned to this cell tower for T-mobile? Lots of location/map services - but I didn't find any info about baseband allocations in this area...
Hmmm... Let's try switching the baseband to the T-mobile USA 6.x settings...
Same result as in CT, no service, no joy ;-(
Do the T-Mobile USA settings work for anyone watching this board?
Hello guys, it is my first post here! I tried searching for my specific question but I did only find hints, not a true answer.
I'm about to change my phone soon, I come from iOS world so please don't be too hard on me if what I ask is stupid or evident for you (as it would not necessarily be the case for me ).
I am right now looking at a Sprint 32GB version of a LG G2, it does have a bad ESN with Sprint. Obviously it is not high priced since ESN is bad. I understand a little that ESN is linked to WMCA networking, which is specific to each carrier. It is the same as connecting to data with Sprint or Verizon or AT&T, or in my area, SFR, Orange, Bouygues, Vodafone... Am I right?!
From what I've read, it would be best for me to search for a regular phone instead if I was in USA. But I live in Europe, so I don't care about not being able to connect to Sprint network.
If I flash/root this phone with an EU stock ROM or International ROM (or even a custom ROM, since a lot are available here), will I be able to connect to my local carriers' networks?
Regarding your advices I will or will not buy this phone.
Sorry if my english is bad, & Thanks in advance! :good:

If you're saying that you're gonna buy the Sprint version because it's good in price and you live in Europe. Just check the bands which the Sprint version supports and the bands which your network provider in Europe provides. If they are compatible then no worries. Just make sure that you only flash ROMs etc which are made for the Sprint variant. I think you would also need to unlock the device which I'm not sure about.
Still, the best thing to do us to buy the international variant(D802) which is not locked if you also can't figure out how to unlock.

Sprint does not support 2100 frequency. 3g hspa HSDPA so on use the above mentioned frequency. According to my knowledge India uses 2100 frequency band. So unfortunately you'll not be able to use 3g in India with the sprints version.
Try for at&t version
im using 3G just fine in india on sprint version :|

You will have to input APN settings manually.
Name Airtel
Apn : Airtelgprs.com
rest leave it default save select and your net should start working.

Actually bro everything is fine with the setting I guess, as I have tried a different sim as well, whenever i enable data it does not show "E" on the notification bar as it Use to show before I could only see GSM inside a small circle when ever i activate net there is no "E" at all. All the problems started when I updated the cell via OTA update initially when I got the cell it was ZV7, now after the update its ZVA and not able to Use net since then. Please find the attached screen shot about the GSM showing up when i enable data.
it will not show E on stock rom unless u make some changes,
thats how Sprint rom reports network.
Other roms ull see E and H.
