Hey, just obtained an Acer Iconia Tab A500. As this is my first tablet, I don't want to mess it up right from the start. I'm coming from an HTC Dream and Samsung Galaxy S and have experience rooting & flashing. What I don't have experience with is Encryption software. I've never encrypted anything in Android before and don't know how it will effect the system. Does any think I'll have any problems if I run these processes in this order:
1. Root using the modified GingerBreak.apk
2. Use Acer Recovery Installer to flash CWM
3. Encrypt using the stock software
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
If this is some sort of duplicate post, please delete it, but I could not find something like this anywhere. I want to share my method for gaining root access + installing CWM recovery on the Rogers Galaxy Tab 10.1. This should work on other variants, those who can confirm please comment and I'll update the post.
Update:
Now confirmed on WiFi model AND Verizon Model (thanks Rockaholic94 and badogg for testing).
Rooting:
1. Download this file and rename it as "update.zip"
2. Put the update.zip file on the root of your tab's SD card
3. While your tab is powered on or off (doesn't matter), hold the volume down (volume up on VZW Model) + power key to bring up the option to select recovery mode or download mode.
4. Choose the recovery mode option (box picture) by hitting the volume down key then selecting with the volume up key.
5. Now that you're in the factory android recovery menu, choose "Install update from SD card".
6. Highlight the update.zip file using the volume buttons and the power button to select.
7. Confirm Superuser is in your list of apps
Let it do its thing and it is now rooted.
Installing Clockworkmod:
1. After confirming the Superuser app is installed and you in fact have root access, download ROM Manager from the Play Store.
2. Open ROM Manager and choose "Install Clockworkmod Recovery"
3. Select "Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1" to make sure the right recovery is installed, and wait a minute or so as it installs.
4. Towards the end, ROM Manager will prompt you for root access to complete the install.
Congrats, you now have root access and CWM Recovery.
This was tested on my 3G device running 3.2 for the record, but it should work on 3.1 also. Please let me know what devices you've been successful using this method for, and remember the "thanks" button too .
Guide was written by myself, but I grabbed the root file from this post on Android Authority. Props to whoever the original owner of that file is... Also, not responsible for bricking devices etc etc etc.
For which versions of the 10.1 will this method work?
It works 100% on the Rogers GSM 3G model, so it should work on any 3G variant. The tabs are branded as "4G" here in Canada but this method has not been tested on an actual 4G (Verizon) device, or the Wifi only model.
I did it on my Wifi only 10.1 tab and it worked perfectly.
Awesome! Great to hear.
Great! I don't like using Odin (once had a semi-brick when flashing with Odin, probably due to a bad cable connection), so I like this Odin-free approach
I'm not a huge ODIN fan myself. I only have experience with ODIN from my 7" Galaxy Tab but I like simple methods that don't require a computer. I completed this method by simply using Dropbox to transfer the root file to my device, the built-in file manager to rename the file, stock recovery to flash it, then CWM via ROM Manager from the Play Store......... NO WIRES
unroot?
Many thanks for this!!
I also don't like ODIN, not to mention that I only have Mac thus booting into Windows everytime I want to use it.
This "no wire" method really is better and way easier, do you thing unroot method can also be made that way?
Bye, Dejan.
I'll look into the un-root method and update the post accordingly.
worked on my 4g rogers model.
Thx!
The zip only adds superuser app & su binary, so I would suspect that simply removing these 2 files would be enough to unroot.

Few newbie questions regarding flashing.
If I flash this AOKP am I able to uprage it to ICS when it is released?
Or am I forced to flash back to stock rom?
You'll need to either revert back to stock to get the official OTA or just wait on a flashable custom version you can flash via ClockworkMod.
I'm personally just going to flash a new version of AOKP once it is updated with the camera drivers (since none of the ICS ROMS currently have working cameras). The cameras aren't something I use on my tablet so I'm currently living without them.

I tend to use the camera, so I'm waiting for that to finally get updated. I'm hopeful it comes soon, with the alleged 'soon' release.
I did get CM9 nightly up and it looks good, but I'm going back to Honeycomb stock. (having difficulty going back, but that's for another thread)
The only reason I really don't like the stock ROM is the lag, not to mention they're pretty slow to update this particular device. ASUS seems to be on top of keeping their devices updated, but they don't offer any 3G/4G tablets here in Canada.
After seeing ICS reviewed on the new 10.1 tab, it's sad to still see lag on a revised version of the device. I'm not overly confident that the ICS update being pushed here in June will be much better than 3.2, for me it's going to provide camera drivers and that's all it will be good for.
So..if I root using this method, how do I unroot in case I need to?
Thanks for help
As of right now you will need to use ODIN to unroot and revert to stock unless someone finds a flashable .zip method or something (which will only unroot, won't restore stock recovery). I've been busy lately so I haven't really looked into any unroot methods yet. As far as I know there is this method for restoring a WiFi only Tab to stock, which does wipe your device keep in mind:

The only reason you'd really need to unroot would be for warranty reasons I suppose, but it would be nice to have a quick and easy method.
galaxy 10.1 tab model gt-p7500 how to root? root.zip does not work
Hi :
I have a galaxy tab 10.1 GT-P7500 model and trying to root it.
tested root.zip and does not work
any other alternative method?
I would like to confirm that this method works on the VZW tab. Only trick is that you must press volume up instead of volume down to enter recovery.
how comparable is 2.3.1 and 2.3.3 and how similar would the cwm be? I ask because I have a cheap dopo md-702 tablet that I would like to try working with. It has 2.3.1 and I was wondering how to get cwm to work with the tablet. It has a rockchip rk2918 so any ideas on where to start digging?

Most cheap tablets cannot have cwm due to the lack of recovery menu. Cheap tablets are already rooted. Just install superuser and do whatever you want with. But once again. Due to lack of recovery you have to be careful with what you do.

In a very interesting sort of way the tablet has a recovery mode but it takes multiple steps to get to it. The long and short I used quick boot app to boot to recovery (which looked similar to a download mode) and then had to try different key presses to get into the actual recovery mode. I can run an update.zip from the menu but nothing else. It looks so similar to what the modded cwm is for our phones that I wonder if there was a way to look at the codes and compare. Also note worthy after I used Titanium Backup to unistall the phone (bad idea) I had to hit the reset button to see if I could start it back up, and it booted back to just the basic apps but still had the google play app (this tablet did not come with google play originally). There are just so many little nuances that I'm not sure what is going on with this tablet. I need to have some time to connect it to my PC so I can see if there is a way to look at the tablet through the computer similar to what I used to do with my windows phone.
There is also an upgraded model of the tablet that has 4.0, with a 1.2Ghz instead of 1Ghz processor. Is the OS (android 4.0) a part of the firmware? If I have the firmware from the newer model what are the chances it would work with the older model?
I want to copy this post over to the tablet thread and hopefully get some hits over there.

As long as you have a way to get to recovery from boot up you shouldn't have much of a problem. And Android and Windows work differently on many things. But android is more open. *you can do whatever with it* and if I'm not mistaken you can upgrade your firmware to 4.0 through recovery. Some tablets you can upgrade by downloading the firmware on the tablet's site.. Try that if it doesn't have the option to do a system update in the settings.
Right now I'm bricked, used the firmware from the upgraded model but worried that because there a gig of additional memory, but the rest of the hardware specs are identical, so right will not boot. Fuzzy lines, going to try and drain battery then charge and boot into recovery.
Let me clarify, I used the firmware from the manufacturer for the upgraded model. So I thought out would work. I've not given up but not optimistic. If I'm lucky someone can pull the original firmware and I can miraculously get it into download mode again for a reflash, that is if I can't get a factory reset.
UPDATE: I can power on to the first animation, the infamous penguin. Going to see if either computer will notice it tomorrow. If neither will, I'm not sure I can do any thing more.
UPDATE: it will connect but windows doesn't recognize it. I'm thinking I have options but will take time.

Hey everyone, I two nooks. One everything works flawlessly on. So I'm positive I have all my sandisk files set up correctly. The model that is currently working is BNRV200.
The model nook that is NOT working is BNTV250. The problem is that it won't even try to boot from the disks. It boots up the nook OS as usual. I simply can not find an answer to this question. Most of the topics I have read people just didn't set up their disks properly.
I attempted to install Cyanogenmod mod and I tried to boot Nookie Froyo. Both work perfectly on my BNRV200.
If anyone know the answer to this, It would be GREATLY appreciated!

Nook Tablet (250) requires different software than Nook Color (200). Try the XDA forum for the Nook Tablet.
In this nice guide (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2468858), heatshiver describes how to get CWM up and running after rooting ofc. What's confusing to me is, that I supposedly need to download CWM two times (like he wrote in step 2 and 3). But to me it looks like I can choose (at least on the D802) between NO TOUCH / SEMI TOUCH / FULL TOUCH Clockwork Mod Recovery. Or do I need the SEMI TOUCH one from point 2 for some files I only can get from there?
Two side questions: Also how can I get them pretty rainbows? And do I need LOKI on the D802?
Thanks in advance!
