[Q] rooting HTC magic april 2012?? - myTouch 3G, Magic General

hello all
after an entire day scouting the web I haven't found a single sound guide/howto for rooting my HTC Magic/sapphire 32b currently running android 2.2.1.
several guides I found either have faulty dowload links (likehttp://android-dls.com/wiki/index.php?title=Magic_Rooting) for crucial files.
or in some cases the downloads, notably the ROM's, are not suited for my device (wrong CID/MID), and CID getter doesn't seem to work on a magic.
I'm growing desperate, I can't find the actual way to root a HTC Magic to this date. It's like everyone stopped caring for rooting older phones. (for the record, I also own a succesfully rooted and ROMmed Sensation). I would like to root my magic so I can run a custom cupcake ROM wich is nice silky smooth and fast.
can someone pls help this desperate man and provide me with a link to a up-to-date guide to root a HTC Magic? or tell me how to? I could either use fastboot method or ADB.
additional information
sapphire pvt 32b ship s-on g
hboot-1.33.0013 (sapp10000)
cpld-10
radio-2.22.28.25

after a long search I think I managed to root the phone using the One-Click method.
only to find myself unable to install a recovery
I found a recovery image at CyanogMod: recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.7.0G-cyan.
But every method I try, it won't install on my device.
fastboot: can't find the image no matter where I place it
adb: can't find the device while plugged, and in custom recovery mode
terminal app: can't find the image, even when it's placed in the sdcard root with SU permission.
my last resort is to try the unlockr method, but I doubt if that will work since I can't find the Amon Ra's recovery image anywhere on the web.
can someone plz provide me with a comfirmed working guide for HTC Magic 32b Froyo build? please, it would be very much apreciated.

Dude)))
Use SuperOneClick to root and flash recovery 1.7.0 G via this manual: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7707672&postcount=1
Steps 5, 7, 9 ONLY

found this guide earlier.
step 5: succes
step 7: no flash_image in de ls list, continued to step 9
step 9: tried this several times and I get different issues:
- I type the command (./flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.7.0G.img) and nothing happens. so according to the guid I assume I'm all good. but when I reboot in bootloader I don't have an opt to enter recovery
- or when I enter the command, I get a bunch of memory error messages wich ends with the line "error writing recovery: no space left on device" while OS sais 266mb left internal memory.
any other method to flash a recovery on this device?

Bootloader does not have option to load into recovery.
You must enter by self. Turn phone off then turn on by pressing and holding Home + Power
At bottom line there must be text like 'Amon Ra 1.7.0 G recovery'. If you will see triangle with "!" - it is stock recovery and you need repeat step 9
In case when there are some errors like 'no space' - you have to delete something in /system/app/ (try remove bloatware "Amazon MP3"). You need know syntax of "rm" linux-command

when entering recovery it only displays the custom recovery.
the device doesn't seem to contain any removable bloatware when I explore it using ES file explorer with root acces.
when I retry the flash sometimes it doesn't give any message, meaning it should be succesfull. but when I boot in recovery it's still custom. Either way I should have enough space, but the flash is still unsuccesfull.
I don't know how long the flash should take either..?

If you have custom recovery - your first step in mission is succeed
Now you need flash custom ROM via custom recovery.
1. Search for custom ROM (try ezGingerbread first) and place it to sdcard
2. Run into recovery
3. Wipe data / factory reset to delete old data
4. Choose and install custom ROM
5. When installation is completed - reboot phone (via menu)
6. Wait for 5-10 minutes at first start.

My apologies for the mistype, I ment stock recovery instead of custom .
But I managed to install a custom recovery through adb. I kept trying to flash untill it finally popped (custom) Android system recovery.
Since the ADB method doesn't display a progress notification or wheter the flash was succesfull, it's hard to keep track of the installation. I waited a good 10 mins before rebooting and that seems to be sufficient.
After that it was cake to install a ROM ofc. So consider this solved .
tnx for the help, I apreciate all the effort.
I still find it ackword though, that only the ADB method eventually worked. Fastboot and several apps didn't do the trick.

Help think I might have bricked my Magic(32A)

Hi,
I feel very bad asking but can you please help me with my Magic(32A) - Rogers.
Here is the story,
I bought the phone on ebay and the seller indicated that he rooted the phone before he sold me. So I thought okay as its rooted I can go to fast boot and just apply update.zip. So I did the below
1. switched off the phone
2. pressed home + power on and went to fast boot
3. did clean swipe
4. applied update.zip
It applied the custom rom(CyanogenMod 32a) and after that I am stuck on Roger's boot-up screen. So after this I removed my battery and I tried to going to fastboot and clicking Nandriod v2.1.1 restore and I get this error "E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblkop1". After that I did wipe and tried to apply restore but can "Error running nandriod restore. Restore not performed".
Can you please advise me of any options I have to restore my magic back.
Thanking you
FD
If you where not flashing the SPL you "should" still be ok if you can get into fastboot.
If you can just try to apply the ROM again, you might want to download another copy or different ROM (Hero maybe).
Clinton
do me a fav and power on holding down the vol down. see if you go into fastboot. if you do then you are not bricked. if so, see what your radio and spl is plus check if your (s) is off. if so you are rooted and you flashed the wrong board rom. if its on then your seller lied and you are not rooted. if so fallow the rooting guides that are posted here. if you need ne help just pm me and i will apply my skills the best i can. i want all to be rooted and experience the true right of freedom. lol. fosho. . . .
Partial hope
When I power it on and hold volume down I can get into fastboot mode and here is what I can see on the screen
Sapphaire pvt 32A eng s-off H
Hboot-1.33.2009(SAPP50000)

Can you please advise me on what I can do next please. Is my phone rooted as it has "s-oof"? and what should my next steps be.
Thanking you
FD
ok ?. did you buy it rooted so you didnt have to do ne thing?? does it have RAv recovery or cm's recovery??
Thank you rocking_mod I was able to restore my phone. Here is what I did
1. downloaded HoFo mod to renamed it to update.zip and copied it to SD card
2. used a recovery img and did a fast boot and loaded the img
3. after the reboot did a clean wipe
4. loaded the HoFo rom from the recovery mode.
And finally now the phone works again. Enough of action for one day.
Thanks again.

Congrats!
Always great to see when someone bring his mobile back to live
I'm guessing the ROM you downloaded was not compatible with your phone. As a side note, do NOT apply the Rogers update ontheir web site. It will upgrade your SPL to the dreaded perfect version.
I got the same error when I first apply the hofoion108.zip. I happened to press apply again somehow, and it had no errors at the second time. My phone can start with that rom later on.
I need help, i am in same situation as you freedonkey, but i don't know where to get the files you reffer to:
1. downloaded HoFo mod to renamed it to update.zip and copied it to SD card
2. used a recovery img and did a fast boot and loaded the img
3. after the reboot did a clean wipe
4. loaded the HoFo rom from the recovery mode.
The HoFo mod and which recovery image should i use and where to get it ?
My phone specs so far are:

ps: I am not sure, but i dont know what model is mine (i am kind of a newbie :/) i think it should be Rogers, but not sure, bought it in Portugal blocked to TMN phone company.
I also "soft-bricked" my Magic when installing a new ROM. I had wrong radio and didn't wipe before trying to install - all I was left was the HTC boot splash.
I was then, after a few days of reading & thinking, able to restore the device! I had bought it used so I had no warranty.
I used ADB to check out if the device was alive or dead. I wiped everything that was left (kernel, boot, system and userdata) and flashed new radio that would work with CM5/6. After that I flashed Amon_RA 1.71 Recovery, a 1.6 Donut ROM, gapps and new kernel. It worked! After that (for a month) I've been playing with CM6 nightlies and RC's.
If you don't want root capablities, just the original ROM, there should be good info on that. But if you do, I would recommend to follow CyanogenMod instructions from their wiki - they're helpful and easy to follow.

Thanks for the help kantiii, i will see what i can doo tonight when i get back home
Hey again Kantii,
I am sorry i am bit newbie, I figure out my phone is still alive sthoughout ADB as u did, but i don't know for sure how to:
1- I wiped everything that was left (kernel, boot, system and userdata)
- I actuall wiped it after i turned the phone on with Home+off buton, does that inclued kernel and system wipe ?
2- flashed new radio that would work with CM5/6
- CM = Cyanogen Mod ??? which of these files u recomend to me ? (Both radio and CM5/6 ?)
3- I flashed Amon_RA 1.71 Recovery, a 1.6 Donut ROM, gapps and new kernel
- Is Amon_RA 1.71 Recovery compatible with any HTC MAgic ???
I am really newbie about all this so I would appreciate all details! :|
thanks a lot for everything so far anyway
Sorry for long time no reply! I had not checked my mailbox!
You should wipe them in fastboot:
1. Turn your phone on by pressing back + power until you are in fastboot & see the skating droids. Another method to do this is turning the phone on by pressing volume down + power and then the back key.
2. Connect the device to your pc (make sure you see FASTBOOT USB on the phone display) and run CMD
3. type "fastboot devices" and check if your phone is plugged in correctly and you see the device ID.
4. Now you can wipe them correctly with fastboot:
4.1 type "fastboot erase [system/cache/userdata/boot/kernel/recovery all separately]" (without brackets etc, they are here to make reading easier)
4.2 Download:radio http://www.theandroidkitchen.com/fi...es/?download=Radio_HTC_PVT_32A_3.22.20.17.img
SPL http://briancrook.ca/android/3.22/hboot-1.33.2005.img
recovery http://rapidshare.com/files/387932922/recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.7.0H-cyan.img4.3. Move the downloaded files to C:\ (and if you want, rename to Radio.img and Hboot.img and Recovery.img) so it is easier to use them. After that type "cd.." in cmd repeatedly until you are in C:\
5. Now you should be able to flash the radio, SPL and recovery images:
5.1 Type "fastboot flash radio Radio.img"
5.2 Type "fastboot flash hboot Hboot.img"
5.3 Type "fastboot flash recovery Recovery.img"
5.4 In each step wait until fastboot says it has finished - if you won't, you have to start everything again or may brick your device.
6. Now in your phone press menu to power down it. Then boot again to fastboot to confirm you flashed correctly:SAPPHIRE PVT 32A ENG S-OFF H
HBOOT-1.33.2005
RADIO-3.22.20.177. Now power down the device again and boot to recovery by pressing home + power.
7.1 In recovery, check that it works correctly (no lag, no crashes, functions work properly)
8. Now you can install CyanogenMod 6 and enjoy fast FroYo on your Magic
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Upgrading_from_CyanogenMod_4.2_to_CyanogenMod_5/6
Good luck and hopefully you can restore your device!

Not to thread hijack, but these instructions look well suited to my situation. At step 4.1 I get the error "FAILED (remote: not allow)". How to solve?
These instructions are only for Magic, but..
Post your fastboot details, please.
Hi my magic 32b is stuck on vodaphone splash screen.no fastbiot or recovery.but chargeable via usb and has blue light too.can u show me steps to softunbrick
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Sorry, but 32b is out of my area
Try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=755903
After that, test if you can get to fastboot or hboot (fastboot: back + power, hboot vol down + power). Then report back and search the forum for further help on restoring your device with new SPL & radio & recovery & ROM
Otherwise, if these won't work you could try JTAG.
Hope this helps,

Rogers root & Cyanogen mod - confused!

[ I'll send 10$ via Paypal to the person who can get me running on Cyanogen ]
Right, so I'm trying to install CyanogenMod on my Rogers HTC Dream. I've managed to get to SPL 1.33.2005.
I'm following this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=544654
I've extracted both image files to the root of my SD card from the "givemeroot.zip" which are "radio.img" and "recovery.img" but am at a loss on how I should proceed from here. Specifically, the following statement:
"IMPORTANT: make sure you have the rom you'd like to install in the root of your sd card as update.zip (YOU WILL NOT HAVE A ROM INSTALLED AFTER YOU COMPLETE THE FOLLOWING STEPS, YOU WILL HAVE TO USE THE UPDATE.ZIP TO GET ONE)"
Is CyanogenMod considered a "rom", or am I confused? I have CM's zip file on my desktop as "update-cm-4.2.5-signed.zip" - does that mean I need to simply rename it to "update.zip"? Any help here would be graciously welcome!
Cheers!

This is the guide I followed and was much easier to follow.

That tutorial still confuses me and constantly loops you back to other articles, which in turn do the same. I'm still not where what exactly I'm expected to do at this stage.
[EDIT] I should clarify. I'm not sure what "if" applies to me in point 5. I've installed the 1.33.2005 CPL but do not believe the phone is rooted.
Ah crap, did see that you weren't rooted, sorry, but I haven't rooted in a long time and cant help you with rooting, sorry, but after you get rooted, if you have RA's recovery or Cyanogen's recovery, you can pick "Apply sdcard: Choose zip", if not, just rename update-cm-4.2.5-signed.zip to update.zip and flash it as normal using "Apply sdcard: update.zip"
Hope this helps.

this hack brought to you by dream_kill, and myself.

edit: for those of you that don't know how to get to SPL 1.33.2005 i recommend reading here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=532224 (under Rooting Rogers).
---
(note: this is for the dream, the method works for the magic you just need to flash a magic compatible recovery.img)
This requires that you use SPL 1.33.2005. (this is safe on all rogers dream devices.)
so if you don't have that already, go get it here.
once you are at SPL 1.33.2005 (AND ONLY THEN)
download this
(md5: 4a58a5702fdf899547011888d9cc066f .. sha1: 99e38e4f8798e952e67421a42e7b053ea70957b7)
extract both images wherever you'd like.
IMPORTANT: make sure you have the rom you'd like to install in the root of your sd card as update.zip (YOU WILL NOT HAVE A ROM INSTALLED AFTER YOU COMPLETE THE FOLLOWING STEPS, YOU WILL HAVE TO USE THE UPDATE.ZIP TO GET ONE)
boot into spl and fastboot (power off, hold camera button, power on, press the back arrow to get into "fastboot" mode)
type in the following:
Code:
fastboot flash radio radio.img
fastboot erase system -w
fastboot erase boot
fastboot erase recovery
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
POWER OFF (not reboot, power it off) THE DEVICE. (you can do this using the corresponding button [it says it on the screen] or just pull the battery [make sure everything is done flashing of course])
(if you don't boot into recovery or accidentally rebooted, just pull the battery [if you notice top left it should read "FASTBOOT" or "FASTBOOT USB" if it's plugged in] you're not bricked, you just need to access recovery, not standard boot ;P)
now hold down the HOME button and power it on, you should boot into recovery mode now, go ahead and ALT+S to flash your rom, and enjoy! now you can flash anything you see in the forums
EDIT:
So i noticed people were talking about reverting back (not sure why you'd want to )
Regardless, heres the original radio (3.22.20.17) and the original recovery (WARNING: UNROOTED) from rogers dream:
http://www.stevebirstok.com/android/losemyroot.zip
Code:
fastboot flash radio rogersradio.img
fastboot flash recovery rogersrecovery.img
fastboot erase system -w
and flash the update.zip found somewhere on this forum ;P
EDIT 2:
as far as this ram / memory loss goes:
C:\Users\haykuro\Desktop>sha1sum radiog1.img radioion.img
14163559b04ba8c9daead5e34465ebf5bafa7bd1 *radiog1.img
14163559b04ba8c9daead5e34465ebf5bafa7bd1 *radioion.img
radiog1.img is the radio.img i provide in the givemeroot.zip, radioion.img is straight off here there are no specific radios between 32A and 32B boards, so that isn't why you're losing memory. i'm trying to figure it out, so if anyones willing to do some testing and post results, please do so.

Once you do that:
1. Upgrade your recovery image to the latest Amon-RA(Link in my sig)
2. Use it to partition your sdcard w/ a FAT32, 512MB ext3 and 96MB linux-swap(backup anything you want first)
3. Put on the latest CM(flash the HTC rom and then the CM ROM as per instructions in the CM thread)
I also recommend you get the latest radio and SPL...if they're the same for rogers as they are on the G1, links in my sig. Not absolutely necessary, but nice to have so you can run any ROM you want.
has anyone tried this guide? http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Full_Update_Guide_-_Rogers_Dream_EBI1_to_CyanogenMod
apparently it is supposed to take me from stock rogers to cyanmod rooted i got all the way to the end where in my cmd i type erase system -w that works but when i type the next command flash system system.img it says cannot load system.img..... has anyone used this guide and can offer help? ive gone over all the steps over and over im certain i havnt missed anything
You can try verifying the checksum that is posted on the HTC download page or you could just try downloading it again in case something is corrupt.
You could also try flashing an update.zip that doesn't contain the radio. I think someone posted one a while back on the forum. Also I think if you would just skip that step your phone would still work but you would just be missing the google apps like maps. This is better than no phone for now and you can try to get it to work later.

Can't install RA recovery onto rogers magic - please help

I am using this website, and am at step 6. Everything up to this point has been going well, but i cannot get the recovery image to copy over. BTW I have the recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.7.0H.img file i'm using. When I type to push the file to the SDcard, it says, the transfer failed because the file system is read only.
How do I fix this? I've restarted the phone, taken the SD card in and out, i've typed adb remount, and nothing is working.
. Open command prompt and go to the Tools folder in Android SDK that you downloaded to create the gold card.
Assuming that you have not changed the file name of the recovery, use the following commands:
cd C:\AndroidSDk\tools
adb push recovery-RA-hero-v1.6.2.img /sdcard/
adb shell
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RA-hero-v1.6.2.img (file name of the recovery you downloaded)
OK, i've got that working, now another problem...
cd C:\AndroidSDk\tools
adb push recovery-RA-hero-v1.6.2.img /sdcard/
adb shell
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RA-hero-v1.6.2.img (file name of the recovery you downloaded)
7. After the recovery has been flashed, go to the following link to download the ENG SPL for HTC MAGIC 32A (SPL: 1.76.2007)
http://www.4shared.com/file/21114537...07-signed.html
8. Now copy the SPL to your memory card.
adb push update-hboot-1762007-signed.zip /sdcard/
9. Restart your phone using the home + power key till it boots up into the recovery mode.
(or just type 'adb shell reboot recovery')
10. Using the 'Flash zip file' option from the recovery, select the SPL file from the memory card and flash the HBOOT on your phone
Now i've done most of that, but when I restart into recovery mode, it keeps on randomly rebooting even though I don't want it to. I clicked on 'flash zip file' and it just rebooted right away.
Now when I flashed the recovery, the command prompt said that it did it, BUT nothing happened on my phone, it was just sitting there and didn't say it was doing anything. Could this be a problem?
OK i kept trying, and finally i got it to go into 'flash zip file', I clicked on the correct zip file, but right after clicking the screen went black and it restarted.
Does this sound like it worked? How do I check to confirm if it worked and it's rooted?
Ok I did this, and it said ADB is already running in root in the cmd, so i think i'm good!!!
Thanks!
The easiest way to test if the device is rooted is to open another command prompt in the tools dir and type
adb root
If it returns that adab is already running in root, then you're all set.
So as i said, i installed the sapphire recovery, but now i'm reading on the wiki page that you need the HERO recovery file. I need to change the radio, but then it is saying i needed the HERO recovery.
This is so damn confusing why can't anyone get this all straight and not have so many different and totally contradicting methods.
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.p...agic32A_Firmware_to_CyanogenMod#6.35.x_Radios
The wiki here says to use the HERO recovery, but this thread only gives the sapphire recovery for the HTC magic.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=530492
Now to clarify i checked and i think i have successfully rooted, but the specs are this.
Sapphire PVT 32A ship s-on H
Hboot-1.76.0008
CPLD-12
RADIO-6.35.08.29
I'm told i need to change the radio now before I can install the cyanogen rom, is this true?
I can't find out what to do because no one seems to talk about the 1.76.0008 spl...
Any help?
OK so more playing and more following guides, I installed the HERO recovery tool (1.6.2), and updated the radio to 6.35.10.18, changed my SPL to 1.76.2007, and have my PVT 32A ENG S-OFF H setup.
I'm confused though, because I did all of this work so I can install the lastest cyanogen rom, but it says it can't use this version of the radio... what the hell?
Someone REALLY needs to fix these tutorials to be self consistant.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=605239
follow this, got it all done, then go here to get the cyanogen mod...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=673394.
What do I do now?? Do I downgrade my radio or just use a different rom?

Someone REALLY needs to fix these tutorials to be self consistant.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=605239
follow this, got it all done, then go here to get the cyanogen mod...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=673394.
What do I do now?? Do I downgrade my radio or just use a different rom?

Here is a link to a test kernel port file for CM 5.0.8 from Brian Crook. This should allow you to run CM using your current Radio. Like I say it's a test port and I haven't tried it but Brian is the one that does all the ports to the Rogers 3.x radios.
http://briancrook.ca/android/testing/
you'll need to download the file bc-5.0.8-6355-ebi1-signed.zip
You would use recovery to flash CM 5.0.8 then flash this kernel port file. After that don't forget to flash the gapps package that should be linked in one of the URL's that you already posted or you can get it here http://kanged.net/mirror/download.php?file=gapps-ds-ERE36B-signed.zip
PLEASE NOTE
Do not change your radio from it's current 6.x version without flashing the matching SPL for the new radio. If you fail to flash the SPL/Radio combination correctly you WILL brick your phone.

[Q] Cannot get into recovery mode after rooting by using super one click method

Hello all,
I have been using the super one click method to root my HTC Magic Saphhire 32A.
It works well so far albeit need to alter some SU files in the program. Running of terminal emulator with the command prompt SU confirmed that I have the superuser rights.
Now the problem is whenever I use ROM manager to reboot in recovery, the phone restart, HTC logo shows, then the next screen I see is a big asterisk and a phone image, after this I pressed Home + power, the screen manage to switch to Android system recovery utility, BUT with only 3 options:
1) Reboot system now
2) Apply sdcard:update.zip
3) Wipe data/factory reset
And in the end of the screen, there is one line highlighted in red: E: can’t open /cache/recovery/command
After the phone been rebooted, I switched off the phone. And Pressed vol - with power button, same issue happen too with the asterisk sign shows on the screen. After unrooting it, the phone recovery mode are back to normal with the 3 androids in skates appear on the screen.
Have anyone face the same problem? Any ways to sort this out? I am planning to back up my stock ROM, and wanted to try out some cyanogenmod ROM. I tried Googled and read lots of forum post but left without a solution. Any helps are appreciated! Cheers!
p/s: I am a noob in Android OS. XD
I have the legend and these is a process of booting the recovery from there as update.zip. have you tried renaming the ROM update.zip and flashing it from there?
Sent from my HTC Legend using XDA App
I fiddled with the ROm manger setting by choosing "delete recovery prior to flashing", and now it makes it worse.
I selected "reboot in recovery" in ROM manager and the phone reboot, but just stuck at the HTC start up screen.
I plugged in the phone while trying another recovery reboot, and it still stuck at the HTC screen, but with a red line on the top saying "fastboot USB". Gosh I think i am going no way with this...
E:Can’t open /cache/recovery/command
Same fault here mytouch 3g unlocked at&t 32b downgraded too cupcake and tried
getting E:Can’t open /cache/recovery/command
home and power button down still cant get you in recovery? you cant flash any other working rom?

Did you flash custom recovery with ROM manager? Or you just rooted the phone with 1 click method?
Sorry for the late reply. I am just back from overseas business trips. I used Clockmod ROM Manager and did a backup, tried reboot in recovery, and the phone rebooted itself but stuck at the HTC logo now.
I can confirm that the phone is rooted with super user permission.
The reason being the phone didn't manage to get into recovery mode might be due to the missing recovery.img in the phone. Pushing the img file to phone through Clockmod didn't work apparently, so I tried command prompt from PC fastboot flash recovery c:\recoveryxyz.img. It failed too with an error remote failed.
I tried using the terminal emulator in the phone and tried pushing the recovery image again and it didn't happen too. Can some one please help? Cheers!
Download ROM manager and you have option that says install custom recovery it will install Clockwork, and you have flash alternative recovery it installs amon ra's recovery i prefer most
Will try it tonight and revert for the result. Cheers!
I have tried flashing alternate ROM through ROM manager and for once it managed to boot into recovery mode. BUT the device hang right after that, I can't select any of the options and have to pull the battery out to force shutdown.
I tried using fastboot flash recovery *.img remotely through my PC while the phone is in fastboot USB mode, and my command prompt stated FAILED (remote: not allow)
Urgh, I think I might have missed something here... Could some one please help? Cheers!
p/s: my objective is to upgrade my stock ROM android 1.5 to cyanogen ROM. Cheers!
I don't know whether this info helps but here goes:

Thanks WoblyGoblin for taking your time to help. Yes, I have selected the correct phone model. I chose HTC Magic.
Did you install the recovery?
Sent from my HTC Magic using XDA App
I am stuck in trying to install recovery img into the phone. can't boot in recovery mode, tried ROM manager and remote push of recovery img into the phone.
Please refer to the previous post for more info. Cheers!
Ok here is the solution for you use this guide but download this apk and this recovery.
If you dont have 1.5 android but 1.6 download Terminal emulator from market and when you start it type first:
su
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RA-hero-v1.6.2.img
Hello mate,
i just tried the method and I am stuck at FlashRec backup recovery image step.
I clicked on backup recovery image, but there is a command prompt that says:" backup FAILED: Could not run command.
FYI, I am running on Android 1.5. On the edge of giving up rooting and loading a custom ROM now and without a MARKET apps on the phone.

Did you try terminal emulator app?
And commands that i gave you?
yes mate, have tried flash_image recovery command from the terminal app and tries to restart in recovery without any result.
I have did a few research and read up and found out that I am stuck with the south east asia Magic model without the google based support, with no market apps and it is perfected SPL.
Quite upset by it. LOL!

Dude, this is great for those who have the new version of Hboot.Good looking out.
This is great, man.
There is a way to get S-Off with this frightful HBOOT, however
I suggest you check here on the MikMik. The great part is that you is that you achieve S-Off with Unrevoked, so you have a permanent S-Off compared to Revolutionary's!
Nice guide, but you should really encourage flashing of RA recovery instead of CWM. It's just way more reliable on the EVO 4G.
So will this work for the updated 2.3.5 android??

Most the issues I've seen on this forum over the last year were solved by switching to AmonRa recovery. Let's get people started with a leg up.
Good guide.

Anyone getting issues with HTCdev? I am getting Error Code: 173. Error Reason: Check Rule Fail with exception.
Its it still possible to brick with this root. Can't you only permanently brick when flashing radios? Can you do that if you have s-on?

Hanging on parse
I used
Unlocking EVO 4G via HTCDEV.mp4 on youtube.com via Thedoctadro
I'll try to keep this brief,
I too had spent many hours trying to find the most up to date and seemingly easiest way to begin rooting my hboot 2.18.
I had updated my phone and then read a post about how the evo has been exempt from the Ice Cream Sandwich update.
The video told me to download the htc supertools file. I did not use the tools specified in dev, but still followed the same procedure.
File found here on goo inside .me - htcsupertoolv3.rar
It was on a wiki site with all the listings for the supertools and I chose the latest one that was available.
It is unlocked but when it scans my pc36img, it hangs.
I've read about formatting the sd card and putting another pc36img on and then reinstalling but unsure as to where to find the right one. My phone is fully updated with current updates. Any help would be appreciated if there is any to give seeing as how early into development this process is.
Sidenote: I didn't use the software on the dev instructions because I wanted to follow to a T exactly the instructions in the video. Thanks again.

If you're unlocked using the HTCDev method, you should be using a custom recovery to flash updates, not the bootloader method. The bootloader method will only work if specific criteria are met, since your device is still "S-ON". Do you have a custom recovery (RA-supersonic, preferably) installed?
Re: Hangs on parse.
Thanks! The instructions were to unlock the hboot, and then after the reboot, flash a custom recovery but because it's hanging, I can't get into fastboot usb to flash the custom recovery. Hind sight, I should have waited till there was a full walk through with links to the files needed for the rooting process and only trusted these forums. About a year ago, I rooted an old evo I had through these forums and these are the only ones I will trust. Any help would be much appreciated.
I got thru this one. Ive rooted using the revolutionary method & done it this way. Good tutorial, helps out those who dont know how to root with this ota update.

If you can confirm your bootloader says you're unlocked, you can try removing whatever PC36IMG.zip file you have on your sd card, and put the one I'm attaching to this post there instead. It should get picked up by the bootloader. It's for RA-supersonic v2.3.
A big thanks again. Worked like a charm. Love this site.
yah, i updated the op today and added some more info
Oh perfect...this is my first time rooting my phone so im trying to take in all the information i can.
Worked like a charm, thanks a bunch!
Also, I had a bad NAND recently and was not able to update via Revolutionary. This worked.
A sort of simple ?
If I choose to only to do the unlock bootloader with custom recovery but leave it at s-on, I understand that there is a way that I can still flash rom's to the the Evo......however I want to know if I would still be able to use any streamlines apps anymore such as Boot Manager or Boot Loader? say if I still want to have like 5 different Rom's on my Sd card how can I switch between them?
