Rogers root & Cyanogen mod - confused! - G1 General

[ I'll send 10$ via Paypal to the person who can get me running on Cyanogen ]
Right, so I'm trying to install CyanogenMod on my Rogers HTC Dream. I've managed to get to SPL 1.33.2005.
I'm following this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=544654
I've extracted both image files to the root of my SD card from the "givemeroot.zip" which are "radio.img" and "recovery.img" but am at a loss on how I should proceed from here. Specifically, the following statement:
"IMPORTANT: make sure you have the rom you'd like to install in the root of your sd card as update.zip (YOU WILL NOT HAVE A ROM INSTALLED AFTER YOU COMPLETE THE FOLLOWING STEPS, YOU WILL HAVE TO USE THE UPDATE.ZIP TO GET ONE)"
Is CyanogenMod considered a "rom", or am I confused? I have CM's zip file on my desktop as "update-cm-4.2.5-signed.zip" - does that mean I need to simply rename it to "update.zip"? Any help here would be graciously welcome!
Cheers!

This is the guide I followed and was much easier to follow.

That tutorial still confuses me and constantly loops you back to other articles, which in turn do the same. I'm still not where what exactly I'm expected to do at this stage.
[EDIT] I should clarify. I'm not sure what "if" applies to me in point 5. I've installed the 1.33.2005 CPL but do not believe the phone is rooted.

Ah crap, did see that you weren't rooted, sorry, but I haven't rooted in a long time and cant help you with rooting, sorry, but after you get rooted, if you have RA's recovery or Cyanogen's recovery, you can pick "Apply sdcard: Choose zip", if not, just rename update-cm-4.2.5-signed.zip to update.zip and flash it as normal using "Apply sdcard: update.zip"
Hope this helps.

Rogers, heres your root

edit: almost forgot to include the gr33tz! D:
this hack brought to you by dream_kill, and myself.
---
edit: for those of you that don't know how to get to SPL 1.33.2005 i recommend reading here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=532224 (under Rooting Rogers).
---
(note: this is for the dream, the method works for the magic you just need to flash a magic compatible recovery.img)
This requires that you use SPL 1.33.2005. (this is safe on all rogers dream devices.)
so if you don't have that already, go get it here.
once you are at SPL 1.33.2005 (AND ONLY THEN)
download this
(md5: 4a58a5702fdf899547011888d9cc066f .. sha1: 99e38e4f8798e952e67421a42e7b053ea70957b7)
extract both images wherever you'd like.
IMPORTANT: make sure you have the rom you'd like to install in the root of your sd card as update.zip (YOU WILL NOT HAVE A ROM INSTALLED AFTER YOU COMPLETE THE FOLLOWING STEPS, YOU WILL HAVE TO USE THE UPDATE.ZIP TO GET ONE)
boot into spl and fastboot (power off, hold camera button, power on, press the back arrow to get into "fastboot" mode)
type in the following:
Code:
fastboot flash radio radio.img
fastboot erase system -w
fastboot erase boot
fastboot erase recovery
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
POWER OFF (not reboot, power it off) THE DEVICE. (you can do this using the corresponding button [it says it on the screen] or just pull the battery [make sure everything is done flashing of course])
(if you don't boot into recovery or accidentally rebooted, just pull the battery [if you notice top left it should read "FASTBOOT" or "FASTBOOT USB" if it's plugged in] you're not bricked, you just need to access recovery, not standard boot ;P)
now hold down the HOME button and power it on, you should boot into recovery mode now, go ahead and ALT+S to flash your rom, and enjoy! now you can flash anything you see in the forums
EDIT:
So i noticed people were talking about reverting back (not sure why you'd want to )
Regardless, heres the original radio (3.22.20.17) and the original recovery (WARNING: UNROOTED) from rogers dream:
http://www.stevebirstok.com/android/losemyroot.zip
Code:
fastboot flash radio rogersradio.img
fastboot flash recovery rogersrecovery.img
fastboot erase system -w
and flash the update.zip found somewhere on this forum ;P
EDIT 2:
as far as this ram / memory loss goes:
C:\Users\haykuro\Desktop>sha1sum radiog1.img radioion.img
14163559b04ba8c9daead5e34465ebf5bafa7bd1 *radiog1.img
14163559b04ba8c9daead5e34465ebf5bafa7bd1 *radioion.img
radiog1.img is the radio.img i provide in the givemeroot.zip, radioion.img is straight off here there are no specific radios between 32A and 32B boards, so that isn't why you're losing memory. i'm trying to figure it out, so if anyones willing to do some testing and post results, please do so.

Once you do that:
1. Upgrade your recovery image to the latest Amon-RA(Link in my sig)
2. Use it to partition your sdcard w/ a FAT32, 512MB ext3 and 96MB linux-swap(backup anything you want first)
3. Put on the latest CM(flash the HTC rom and then the CM ROM as per instructions in the CM thread)
I also recommend you get the latest radio and SPL...if they're the same for rogers as they are on the G1, links in my sig. Not absolutely necessary, but nice to have so you can run any ROM you want.

has anyone tried this guide? http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Full_Update_Guide_-_Rogers_Dream_EBI1_to_CyanogenMod
apparently it is supposed to take me from stock rogers to cyanmod rooted i got all the way to the end where in my cmd i type erase system -w that works but when i type the next command flash system system.img it says cannot load system.img..... has anyone used this guide and can offer help? ive gone over all the steps over and over im certain i havnt missed anything

You can try verifying the checksum that is posted on the HTC download page or you could just try downloading it again in case something is corrupt.
You could also try flashing an update.zip that doesn't contain the radio. I think someone posted one a while back on the forum. Also I think if you would just skip that step your phone would still work but you would just be missing the google apps like maps. This is better than no phone for now and you can try to get it to work later.

Help think I might have bricked my Magic(32A)

Hi,
I feel very bad asking but can you please help me with my Magic(32A) - Rogers.
Here is the story,
I bought the phone on ebay and the seller indicated that he rooted the phone before he sold me. So I thought okay as its rooted I can go to fast boot and just apply update.zip. So I did the below
1. switched off the phone
2. pressed home + power on and went to fast boot
3. did clean swipe
4. applied update.zip
It applied the custom rom(CyanogenMod 32a) and after that I am stuck on Roger's boot-up screen. So after this I removed my battery and I tried to going to fastboot and clicking Nandriod v2.1.1 restore and I get this error "E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblkop1". After that I did wipe and tried to apply restore but can "Error running nandriod restore. Restore not performed".
Can you please advise me of any options I have to restore my magic back.
Thanking you
FD
If you where not flashing the SPL you "should" still be ok if you can get into fastboot.
If you can just try to apply the ROM again, you might want to download another copy or different ROM (Hero maybe).
Clinton
do me a fav and power on holding down the vol down. see if you go into fastboot. if you do then you are not bricked. if so, see what your radio and spl is plus check if your (s) is off. if so you are rooted and you flashed the wrong board rom. if its on then your seller lied and you are not rooted. if so fallow the rooting guides that are posted here. if you need ne help just pm me and i will apply my skills the best i can. i want all to be rooted and experience the true right of freedom. lol. fosho. . . .
Partial hope
When I power it on and hold volume down I can get into fastboot mode and here is what I can see on the screen
Sapphaire pvt 32A eng s-off H
Hboot-1.33.2009(SAPP50000)
CPLD-12
Radio-3.22.20.17

Can you please advise me on what I can do next please. Is my phone rooted as it has "s-oof"? and what should my next steps be.
Thanking you
FD
ok ?. did you buy it rooted so you didnt have to do ne thing?? does it have RAv recovery or cm's recovery??
Thank you rocking_mod I was able to restore my phone. Here is what I did
1. downloaded HoFo mod to renamed it to update.zip and copied it to SD card
2. used a recovery img and did a fast boot and loaded the img
3. after the reboot did a clean wipe
4. loaded the HoFo rom from the recovery mode.
And finally now the phone works again. Enough of action for one day.
Thanks again.

Congrats!
Always great to see when someone bring his mobile back to live
I'm guessing the ROM you downloaded was not compatible with your phone. As a side note, do NOT apply the Rogers update ontheir web site. It will upgrade your SPL to the dreaded perfect version.
I got the same error when I first apply the hofoion108.zip. I happened to press apply again somehow, and it had no errors at the second time. My phone can start with that rom later on.
I need help, i am in same situation as you freedonkey, but i don't know where to get the files you reffer to:
1. downloaded HoFo mod to renamed it to update.zip and copied it to SD card
2. used a recovery img and did a fast boot and loaded the img
3. after the reboot did a clean wipe
4. loaded the HoFo rom from the recovery mode.
The HoFo mod and which recovery image should i use and where to get it ?
My phone specs so far are:
Sapphaire pvt 32A eng s-off H
Hboot-1.33.2005(SAPP50000)
CPLD-12
Radio-6.35.08.29

ps: I am not sure, but i dont know what model is mine (i am kind of a newbie :/) i think it should be Rogers, but not sure, bought it in Portugal blocked to TMN phone company.
I also "soft-bricked" my Magic when installing a new ROM. I had wrong radio and didn't wipe before trying to install - all I was left was the HTC boot splash.
I was then, after a few days of reading & thinking, able to restore the device! I had bought it used so I had no warranty.
I used ADB to check out if the device was alive or dead. I wiped everything that was left (kernel, boot, system and userdata) and flashed new radio that would work with CM5/6. After that I flashed Amon_RA 1.71 Recovery, a 1.6 Donut ROM, gapps and new kernel. It worked! After that (for a month) I've been playing with CM6 nightlies and RC's.
If you don't want root capablities, just the original ROM, there should be good info on that. But if you do, I would recommend to follow CyanogenMod instructions from their wiki - they're helpful and easy to follow.

Thanks for the help kantiii, i will see what i can doo tonight when i get back home
Hey again Kantii,
I am sorry i am bit newbie, I figure out my phone is still alive sthoughout ADB as u did, but i don't know for sure how to:
1- I wiped everything that was left (kernel, boot, system and userdata)
- I actuall wiped it after i turned the phone on with Home+off buton, does that inclued kernel and system wipe ?
2- flashed new radio that would work with CM5/6
- CM = Cyanogen Mod ??? which of these files u recomend to me ? (Both radio and CM5/6 ?)
3- I flashed Amon_RA 1.71 Recovery, a 1.6 Donut ROM, gapps and new kernel
- Is Amon_RA 1.71 Recovery compatible with any HTC MAgic ???
I am really newbie about all this so I would appreciate all details! :|
thanks a lot for everything so far anyway
Sorry for long time no reply! I had not checked my mailbox!
You should wipe them in fastboot:
1. Turn your phone on by pressing back + power until you are in fastboot & see the skating droids. Another method to do this is turning the phone on by pressing volume down + power and then the back key.
2. Connect the device to your pc (make sure you see FASTBOOT USB on the phone display) and run CMD
3. type "fastboot devices" and check if your phone is plugged in correctly and you see the device ID.
4. Now you can wipe them correctly with fastboot:
4.1 type "fastboot erase [system/cache/userdata/boot/kernel/recovery all separately]" (without brackets etc, they are here to make reading easier)
4.2 Download:radio http://www.theandroidkitchen.com/fi...es/?download=Radio_HTC_PVT_32A_3.22.20.17.img
SPL http://briancrook.ca/android/3.22/hboot-1.33.2005.img
recovery http://rapidshare.com/files/387932922/recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.7.0H-cyan.img4.3. Move the downloaded files to C:\ (and if you want, rename to Radio.img and Hboot.img and Recovery.img) so it is easier to use them. After that type "cd.." in cmd repeatedly until you are in C:\
5. Now you should be able to flash the radio, SPL and recovery images:
5.1 Type "fastboot flash radio Radio.img"
5.2 Type "fastboot flash hboot Hboot.img"
5.3 Type "fastboot flash recovery Recovery.img"
5.4 In each step wait until fastboot says it has finished - if you won't, you have to start everything again or may brick your device.
6. Now in your phone press menu to power down it. Then boot again to fastboot to confirm you flashed correctly:SAPPHIRE PVT 32A ENG S-OFF H
HBOOT-1.33.2005
RADIO-3.22.20.177. Now power down the device again and boot to recovery by pressing home + power.
7.1 In recovery, check that it works correctly (no lag, no crashes, functions work properly)
8. Now you can install CyanogenMod 6 and enjoy fast FroYo on your Magic
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Upgrading_from_CyanogenMod_4.2_to_CyanogenMod_5/6
Good luck and hopefully you can restore your device!

Not to thread hijack, but these instructions look well suited to my situation. At step 4.1 I get the error "FAILED (remote: not allow)". How to solve?
These instructions are only for Magic, but..
Post your fastboot details, please.
Hi my magic 32b is stuck on vodaphone splash screen.no fastbiot or recovery.but chargeable via usb and has blue light too.can u show me steps to softunbrick
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Sorry, but 32b is out of my area
Try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=755903
After that, test if you can get to fastboot or hboot (fastboot: back + power, hboot vol down + power). Then report back and search the forum for further help on restoring your device with new SPL & radio & recovery & ROM
Otherwise, if these won't work you could try JTAG.
Hope this helps,
kanttii

Ultimate Guide: How to root myTouch 1.2/LE Fender (3.5mm jack)

As Amon Ra put it:
"The following instructions :
will void all warranties of your phone!
will erase all your userdata!
will change your current ROM/SPL!
will change your current splash screen!
could brick your phone!
Proceed at your own risk!"
So I've taken the guide that I used to root my myTouch 1.2 with T-Mobile, updated some of the information, and added some explanations. All thanks is owed to The Unlockr for the guide, I'm merely going to attempt to explain what your actually doing in the process and just try make the whole ordeal easier. If I would have known what i was actually doing, it would have taken me 45 minutes to root my phone, vice the good 7-8 hours I put into it. I am by no means an expert on rooting, so feel free to critique what I put in here, and I'll make adjustments as needed.
What's unique about the myTouch 1.2 and the Fender edition is that both phone's have a "perfected" SPL, that does not allow for fastboot access via USB. This means that you can't push any command prompt commands to the phone from your computer, which is what you have to do to get the phone rooted. With these instructions, you'll flash a "non-perfected" SPL onto your phone, load up a custom recovery (which is how you will load up ROM's and do a few other things in the future), and then reflash the phones original "perfected" SPL. Without the original SPL, your phone will not function correctly.
I would suggest opening all the links before continuing so you won't have to wait for the downloads to start as your going. Make sure you remember which link is which tab!!!
From The Unlockr:
I. Setup ABD/Create a Goldcard
Follow this procedure completely to create a working goldcard, then return to this procedure and continue:
How to Create a Goldcard
Follow these instructions without fail. If anything get's messed up here then you won't be able to flash a new SPL and you'll have to attempt to remake the Goldcard again. If you attempt to load the sappimg without using the Goldcard or without a properly done Goldcard, you will get either "Incorrect model ID" or "Main Version is Older". The Goldcard basically tricks the phone into not checking these two parameters, which is what let's you get the "unperfected" SPL on to your phone. ADB is the program that allows you to have a command prompt interface from your computer to your phone.
Note for Windows Vista and Windows 7 users: When your setting up your phones drivers during the ADB setup process, be sure to allow Windows Update to check for drivers. It will allow your computer to automatically install the drivers vice having to manually install them yourself. The option to turn it on should come up when Windows gives the notification that it was unable to install drivers for your device
II. Flash the Sappimg file
1. Download the Sappimg File and save it to your newly created goldcard (NOT in any folders, just on the Goldcard itself).
sappimg.zip
2. Once the sappimg.zip file is on your goldcard, turn off the phone and put your Goldcard SD into your phone. Then turn it back on by holding down Volume Down and Power. It should boot into bootloader mode and automatically find the sappimg file and ask you to push the trackball to begin the update. Push the trackball and let it update.
*If it tells you Error – Wrong Model ID or anything similar, the goldcard was not created correctly, go back to that procedure and try again.
Here your loading an Engineering SPL, so that we'll be able to get access to the phone via Fastboot USB and load up your new recovery. Be patient once you turn your phone back on, as it will unzip the file, then check the contents. If you get an error, you've got a problem with your Goldcard and need to redo it.
3. Once it finishes flashing press the "Send" button to reboot and you will notice your touchscreen does not work (don’t panic). Turn off the phone, then turn it back on by holding down Back and Power (to get into fastboot mode).
4. Download these two files and save them into C:\AndroidSDK\Tools folder you setup during the ADB setup procedure:
Stock MyTouch SPL
and Radio
5. Then download the Custom Recovery Image and save it to the C:\AndroidSDK\Tools folder you setup during the ADB setup procedure as well:
Amon Ra’s Recovery
6. Now that you have the recovery, spl and radio all saved in the tools folder of the Android SDK (same folder as the adb program), plug in your phone (while in fastboot mode from step 3).
7. Open the command prompt on your computer and type the following with hitting enter at the end of each line:
cd\
cd AndroidSDK\tools
fastboot devices
A serial number should come up, indicating that your computer can see the phone in fastboot mode. If so continue by typing in the following with hitting enter at the end of each line:
fastboot flash radio radio.img
fastboot flash hboot hboot.nb0 (the 0 at the end of this line is a zero not an oh).
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot reboot-bootloader
8. Once the phone starts to turn back on begin holding home and power (do not let go until you see the recovery mode) to boot into recovery mode.
This could take a while. I believe the first time I tried to get in I had to hold them down for ~1 minute before getting in. You should see the HTC Magic splash screen pop up first. There is a guide to changing out the splash screen (which is just a picture) within these forums but I'll leave it to you guys to search for it.
9. You should end up in Amon Ra’s recovery mode.
10. At this point, you want to plug your ORIGINAL SD card into your computer and copy the "DCIM" and "Music" folders (if you have them) over to your computer to backup your pictures/video/music. Then take the Goldcard out of your phone and put your ORIGINAL SD back in.
11. With your phone connected via USB to your computer and in Amon Ra's Recovery, highlight USB MS and press the trackball. This should mount your SD card to your computer so that you can move files to it.
12. Download these three .zip files:
Cyanogen 6.1
Google Apps
614 MHz OC/UV Kernel
You need the OC kernel because there's a known issue with CM 6.1 having a green tint without flashing a new kernel.
13. Copy those three files over to your phone's SD within Windows, "Safely remove hardware" in Windows, then disable USB MS by pressing the Home button. Back out to the main screen.
14. In the recovery select "Wipe" and you want to wipe "data/factory reset" then "Davik-cache".
15. Back out to the main menu and select "Flash zip from sdcard". First you want to select " update-cm-6.1.0-DS-signed.zip" and hit Home to confirm. Once complete, select "Flash zip from sdcard" and this time select "gapps-mdpi-tiny-20101020-signed.zip" and hit Home to confirm. Once complete, one again select "Flash zip from sdcard" and this time select "oc614-cm-2.6.34.1-6.0.0rc2-signed.zip" and hit Home to confirm.
16. Back at the main screen select "Reboot system now". This will load your phone back up as normal and you should now have a working rooted phone with the Cyanogen 6.1 ROM! Jump in there and check it out.
If you want to try out a different ROM, check this thread out. Go to the section called "MT3G 1.2 / LE Fender".
Thanks to Amon Ra for his recovery images!
Thanks to Unlockr for the original How To!
Thanks to the Cyanogen team for an awesome ROM!

You shout see the HTC Magic splash screen pop up first.
11. In Amon Ra's Recovery, use the trackball to select "Partition sdcard", the "Partition SD", hit Home four times and this will partition your sd card.
This process chops your sd card storage up to allow for swap data to be stored on the first part, apps to be stored in the ext part, and everything else will be stored in what's left.
12. Back in "Partition sdcard" select "SD:ext2 to ext3".
13. Back out to the main menu and highlight USB MS and turn it out. This should mount your SD card to your computer so that you can move files to it.
14. Download these two .zip files:
Cyanogen 5.0.8
Google Apps
15. Copy those two files over to your phone's SD within Windows, "Safely remove hardware" in Windows, then disable USB MS by pressing the Home button. Back out to the main screen.
16. In the recovery select "Wipe" and you want to wipe "data/factory reset" then "Davik-cache".
17. Back out to the main menu and select "Flash zip from sdcard". First you want to select "update-cm-5.0.8-DS-signed.zip" and hit Home to confirm. Once complete, select "Flash zip from sdcard" and this time select "gapps-ds-ERE-36B-signed.zip" and hit Home to confirm.
18. Back at the main screen select "Reboot system now". This will load your phone back up as normal and you should now have a working rooted phone with the Cyanogen 5.0.8 ROM! Jump in there and check it out.
If you want to try out a different ROM, check this thread out. Go to the section called "MT3G 1.2 / LE Fender". Just download the .zip and follow steps 8, 9, 10, 13, 15 (copying the new .zip file only unless the ROM has a requirement for additional ones), 16, 17, and 18.
Thanks to Amon Ra for his recovery images!
Thanks to Unlockr for the original How To!
Thanks to the Cyanogen team for an awesome ROM!

thanks, just purchased a MT3G 1.2 and this guide helped. I don't even care that you basically copied it off of unlockr.
Glad it helped. Yes it is pretty much jacked from Unlockr, but like I said in my first paragraph, I was just trying to break things down a little bit and updated the recovery image and also put a better (IMO) ROM that the stock Fender one they were using. The Unlockr has actually updated their guide using some of my stuff.
step 8?
ive made it to step 8. after the phone reboots I hold down the home and power button as directed and nothing happens. Im just stuck at the HTC Magic screen. I held it down for 3 minutes on a few different occasions and still get nothing. So i havent made it into the recovery menu. any suggestions?
jim
Just to confirm, you do have the 3.5mm Jack at the top of your mytouch, correct? What does your phone show when you boot into fastboot (back+power)?
Sent from my HTC Magic using XDA App
Yes, my phone does have the 3.5mm Jack on top. Fastboot screen says
SAPPHIRE UNKNOWN 32A ENG S-OFF H
HBOOT-1.33.2010 (SAPP31000)
CPLD-13
RADIO-3.22.20.17
Jun 2 2009, 17:27:03
Did all the commands work from step 7? Your still on the engineering SPL and by step 8 you should be back to the original SPL.
Sent from my HTC Magic using XDA App
step 7 went fine. the last command "fastboot reboot-bootloader" said done and the phone restarted (still plugged into the computer). I held down the home button and power button in step 8 but the phone never goes past the HTC Magic screen. thanks for the quick reply.
Jim
You've got to be missing something if your showing the information you posted in fastboot. When you entered the commands on the computer, did you see a loading bar pop up on the upper right-hand corner on your phone screen?
Sent from my HTC Magic using XDA App
I don't mean to sound like a big doofus, I read your post.
It looks to be extremely thorough.
I have already bricked 1 MYT3G following instructions from unlokr(although it was a couple of months ago), so don't blast me too much, but is this for the MYT3G that has the 3.5 headphone jack?
Yes it it for the one with the 3.5mm Jack, as stated in the thread heading.
Sent from my HTC Magic using XDA App
Wow, Completely missed that. Now you can call me a doofus.....
Thanks, I will attempt to do this tonite and see what happens.
I saw the loading bar in the upper right of my screen in step 2 with the sappimg but thats it. Should I start over and try again? What is incorrect with the info from my fastboot? what should i be looking for it to say? thanks again DonJuan.

The information your seeing now in fastboot is what you flashed with the sappimg.zip. You needed to get that on there so that you could flash your custom recovery (Amon Ra's) which will let you flash ROM's later on. What you were doing in Step 7 was reflashing the stock radio/hboot, without these, the phone will not work. Looking at your fastboot information now tells me that you either skipped the part where you reflashed the radio/hboot, or it didn't work. Did you unzip the AndroidSDK.zip to C:\AndroidSDK\? Did you copy the recovery.img, radio.img, and hboot.nb0 to your android SDK tools folder?
ok i understand a little more now. but i did extract the androidsdk.zip and moved the radio, hboot, and recovery all to the tools folder in androidsdk. maybe one of the files is corrupt? would it make a difference if the phone wasnt plugged to get into recovery mode? Im going to try again tonight after work. thanks
Last night I flashed without issue. Thank you very much for the howto - it worked perfect. Am now running CM6-RC2 and really happy with it.

LOL, it would go something like this:
1. Tightly grab bricked myTouch.
2. Find either a building that's 3 stories or more higher, or a very deep body or water.
3. Throw phone off of building/into water.
4. Buy a new one off eBay or make a claim against your phone insurance.
ok so ive managed to make it to step 17. when i try to flash cm 5.0.8 the phone tells me unable to open the .zip. Im a bit further than i was before and almost to the end actually. any guess why it wont open the zip?
Was the ZIP downloaded right? Check it on your computer.

[Tutorial] Restoring Recovery Mode while working only Fastboot Mode*ALL METHODS HERE*

Hello!
Yesterday I found myself in a very terrible situation. I spend about 6-7 hours...
It just happened that I deleted the recovery (through fastboot), and before that deleted firmware of the phone. That is, there remained only mode HBOOT (fastboot). Around the internet and google there are no guides on how to return
recovery by the alternative methods or how to flash a new ROM through
fastboot.
Thats why i want to present to you my little guide... Coz i think it will be very useful for some ppls like me with the same trouble.
So, if you're in a situation where you do not have Recovery, and the phone is not started in boot ROM then first try a standard way to flash a new Recovery through fastboot mode
Standart way of flashing new recovery via fastboot
1.Connect your phone with PC via USB and power off your phone (if it up).
2.Than start up in fastboot mode - (in my situation, fastboot mode is CAMERA+POWER, then button "send") in all other (as i know) this is starting the phone while pressing button BACK.
3.Open -> Start->Run->cmd (open command prompt in windows*) and write:
Code:
fastboot devices
Than you must see your device serial number like this:
Code:
H94XTGAMSHDY
and should say "fastboot".
If all right - go next. If not - check fastboot mode (is on?) and USB cable.
4.Than change directory via cmd to where you have saved your recovery image (NEW recovery.img !!! ALWAYS CHECK MD5 SUM)
5. Than type this :
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img [enter]
(while you are stay in the same dir where you saved recovery.img)
(if you got some error about previously version or smth like this you can try to use this: fastboot erase recovery and only than try to flash new recovery from step №5)
6.Check your phone's display, as recovery is being sent and flashed to your device. And check your command prompt/shell to make sure the process is over.
7.Reboot into recovery by holding Home and Power (before it power off device).
Thats all! You can use any recovery, all what you like. I use Amon_RA's recovery.
IF WHILE FLASHING YOU GOT :
Code:
sending 'recovery' <4594kb>... OKAY [ 1.734s]
writing 'recovery'... INFOsignature checking...
FAILED <remote: signature verigy fail>
finished. total time: 3.125
Use next steps (my Alternative method)
And IF you can't flash recovery by this method it is not big trouble as you think now
Alternative way of BOOTING new recovery via fastboot checked and founded by me
Everything here is much easier and faster!
Do not be scared as I did it yesterday
Only what you need it :
Change directory via cmd to where you have saved your recovery image (NEW recovery.img !!! ALWAYS CHECK MD5 SUM)
And than TYPE:
Code:
fastboot boot recovery recovery.img
And your phone will be rebooted about 2 seconds in RECOVERY MODE. Yes!
After this you can use your old Nand Back up (restore it) and start up your old ROM. Or you can wipe all and try to flash new ROM and many operations what you can use via recovery. When you will get working ROM and flash it - you can flash recovery via adb. Or Use Rom Manager (Not recommended!)
Why we use this method? Because if you got error while flashing - FAILED <remote: signature verigy fail> you CAN'T FLASH ANY .img. Why? I Don't know, i hope some android guru's help us with it theory
(ALL AFTER THIS LINE ALL TEXT COPYED FROM WIKI.CYANOGEN.COM CREDITS GOES TO Cyanogen. Thx you, god)
If you want to flash recovery via adb (using power on phone with working firmware) (This method working 100% but strongly need working phone with working ROM)
Working only with HTC DREAM (G1) - Attention.
adb method by cyanogen version
Restoring the custom recovery image
Download the flash_image tool (HERE LINK
Next, place the file on your desktop
Change the directory to where "flash_image" is located, e.g. in Windows: cd C:\<path-to-flash_image-location>, in Linux: cd /home/USERNAME/path/to/flash_image on a Mac: cd /Users/USERNAME/path/to/flash_image)
IMPORTANT: Turn on USB debugging. Settings -> Applications -> Development -> check the box "USB Debugging"
Open up and adb shell
With your phone booted, type the following command
s:
Code:
adb root
This will start ADB as root, or notify if it is already running as root.
Code:
adb remount
This will mount the system partition (/system) as writable, allowing the following
Code:
adb push flash_image /system/bin
This will send the flash_image script into the /system/bin, so we can use it from within the shell
Code:
adb shell chmod 0755 /system/bin/flash_image
Finally, change the permissions of the script to allow it to perform the desired action.
Now that the script is installed, we are ready to proceed with flashing the custom recovery, saved on the root of the SD card earlier:
Code:
adb shell flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
P.S. If you want i can post here method by flashing original 1.6 ADP Rom via fastboot (but as i think it is on htc dev web... But i can post here cut version of this - coz original version have many not needed things.)

That's what I was thinking... Seems almost pointless for a guide since there's instructions how to fastboot on every recovery thread.
Either way, nicely written guide. Someone will probably find this useful.

With a desire this is quite different, as it has an activated nand flash protection (s-on), so no fastboot flash recovery here. Although this should prevent you from not having a recovery at all...
* note: I don't have a desire (yet) so this is speculation *
Best is probably something similar to this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=750852
I guess if you get the correct PB99IMG.zip for exactly your device/brand you will not need a goldcard, so don't follow the howto blindly (it is for the newer SLCD versions, but the basics will still be applicable to AMOLED devices). Best would be a PB99IMG.zip that still has a hboot version < 0.92, otherwise you will need to downgrade to root. If you already have 0.92, then just take the newest image, as older ones are normally not flashable.
After step 7 of the howto, you are either done, or you will need to find instructions to downgrade if you want to root.
As soon as you have a working system, with a 0.8* hboot you can just use unrevoked to root and flash a custom recovery.
Enough OT... @ANtiHazarD: Very useful overview. Thanks.
WAY WAY WAY more complicated than it should be...
It is a simple matter of:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Done.

2) if older stock spl with fastboot ruu modes (1.33.000*) where the * is

Did you read everything before you flashed the 1.33.0013d SPL?
If yes, you would have noticed, that this SPL is not able to flash a recovery or radio using fastboot. You have to flash the orange-...nbh file to get back a full engineering SPL, but you will loose everything you have installed on the phone ...
Send from my G1 with HTCClay's UNOFFICIAL Superfly 1.6 D/S ADS using XDA App
i don't know about this spl, but all what you can do (what i know) you can use this method which named in prev. post. with RC29 or RC7 stock firmware *.nbh
after flashing all data, radio, recovery will be reflashed by a stock data. All must be fine after this... i hope
ezterry can give for your advanced advice, may be

2) enter fastboot and run 'fastboot flash nbh orange-1.58.73.2.nbh'
3) wait for the entire nbh to flash
4) boot into the bootloader again (it will be an engineering SPL 1.42.2000)
5) You can now re-flash the radio/hboot/recovery via fastboot that you wish to have installed.

basically if you intend to still use the new radio; after installing 1.58.73.2 you can reboot-bootloader; and use my fastboot installation steps at the top of that post
You can do this without a goldcard because I bypass various checks in 1.33.0013d
(It will let you install any other signed NBH but that will still wipe the phone completely; and if it fails to flash cleanly it will leave you without an engineering SPL thus make it harder to make android go again)
hey i tried to flash the MTD too and now i keep getting "E:cant open CACHE:recovery/log" when i go into recovery . I can flash roms but when i reboot my phone my phone stays in the G1 Logo . and when it does make it to the rom i can not get my market or gapps no matter what i do . please help me guys .
EDIT: theres times when i get past the g1 logo but itll just stay on the roms boot screen forever until the phone dies . does anyone have any ideas ?

Can't flash HERCIMG.zip

Im using the fastboot method to flash the original sprint RUU in zip format.
I used:
-fastboot oem rebootRUU
-fastboot flash zip HERCIMG.zip (or HERCIMG, HERCIMG.ZIP, hercimg.zip etc etc)
But i keep getting "Error: cannot load "HERCIMG.zip" or whatever i type.
Stuff i tried:
*Unlocked bootloader to s-off - still wont let me flash and zip files from the bootloader. I'm 100% ive done this before several months ago, and i even used the same HERCIMG file that i left in the /sdcard main directory.
*Delete the old HERCIMG and download a new one from the dev section of the hero forums.
*Manually placed in root of sdcard by mounting the sdcard on my computer.
*Used adb to push the HERCIMG file to the root directory of sdcard
Anyone can tell me whats going on?
Also right now i have CM7, bootloader 1.47 unlocked.
Maybe i have a bad version of fastboot.exe? I copied it from /tools/ folder of android sdk and placed it in /platform-tools/ since it needed adbwinapi.dll which is located in that folder along with adb.exe
Thanks for any help
Ok guys. I have no idea whats up, but eventually i was able to fix by loading the unlocked bootloader and running the RUU.exe from windows. Still wasnt able to flash the HERCIMG.
I had a huge issue with HERCIMG not working for me. I noticed that I had HERCIMG.zip and changed it to HERCIMG.ZIP - make sure it is all caps on your sdcard, how it gets there does not matter, I copied it in windows. Next, you must boot into bootloader - there are many commands, but it has to be a white screen on your phone and text will scroll...at some point, it will ask you what you want to do with the file...This is all done on the phone. You must have s-off too. If you are not using the ENG hboot, I dont think fastboot will work, btw (and the eng hboot is 1.46)
Yup. Flash darchs eng-spl and you should be good to go. Oh and you have to take into account your radio/baseband ver. If its .29 then you have to flash it a certain way or downgrade your radio then flash it then hercimg your current radio again.
Locked & Loaded
Cool thanks for the help. Where can I get the eng-spl so i can flash from bootloader directly?
Well the last time I checked you have to flash it from recovery. If you search the hero dev section for it I'm sure you wil find it. Also I'd highly recommend Flashing it with Ra1.6/1.7 or Cwm2.5 and remember to check your baseband/radio version. If you can't find it let me know and I'll post it after church. But you should read as much as you can about the mod to get a better understanding of the risks and benfits of the mod.
Locked & Loaded
Don't forget that your SDcard has to be formatted to Fat32 so the bootloader can find it.
When I use/have used any HERCIMG.zip, I have never done it through fastboot, I have always done it by using the H-Boot screen. The HERCIMG.zip cannot say "HERCIMG.zip.zip (so don't name the zip file with a .zip in the name- check the details of the file to make sure).
If you are in the bootloader, press the volume button down to get into H-boot from the Fastboot or restart the phone (press volume and start button at the same time).
If you used Regaws to become S-off, then I know the H-boot method will work fine. As far as using fastboot commands, you would need to flash Darch's Eng Spl mod that changes the bootloader to 1.46.2. There is a thread by jasonmaloney that has to do with flashing an RUU from fastboot without being S-Off. This needs to be done from Windows, that's why jason includes fastboot.exe along with the RUU. Is the RUU you are using all images, or are there other files as well (binary types)?
Good Luck

Can't downgrade MT4G?

Hi all, I am going to be as thorough as I can. I am rather new, and I'm stuck trying to downgrade my MT4G to froyo (PD15IMG). I have read the tutorials, and learned enough about adb to attempt this task, but I think by doing the HTC Bootloader unlocking update last week, it may be the reason I'm stuck. I follow the instructions on the tutorial, to gain temp root, until I get to the part where I should get a "#" in the command Window when I type "adb shell" but I keep getting "$" instead, although everything seems to be going ok until I get to that point.
*Also, I put the PD15IMG.zip on the root of my sd card, and start my phone in bootloader mode, and it finds the PD15IMG.zip, and a blue progress bar appears in the top right corner of my phone for about 90 seconds, it then displays "parsing PD15IMG.zip" then stops at the hboot screen and does nothing. I just select power down, then power on my phone and nothing will have been done to my phone. I guess what I need to know is, by doing the HTC bootloader unlock update (which I did before I read that it was a bad idea), can I still downgrade and root with normal methods, or will I have to do something different?
Sent from my HTC Glacier using Tapatalk
You can start differently. Since you've unlocked the bootloader, try to flash recovery directly, by downloading recovery image directly from Clockworkmod site, rebooting to FASTBOOT (adb reboot bootloader) and using the command "fastboot flash recovery your_just_downloaded_recovery.img".
If recovery flash doesn't work for you - download the 2.2.1 PD15IMG, unzip it, and flash the following 2 files from it:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash system system.img
fastboot erase userdata
Then reboot. You should end up on 2.2.1, which is perm-rootable using the guide (Visionary for temp-root, gfree for S-OFF, and then perm-root if you want).
Then flash the recovery and the engineering bootloader.
Here is what I did, I am giving a link to pastebin as instructed, it seems to go perfectly until I try to flash the StockRom. In the meantime I will attempt what was just posted above^^^^^^^ http://pastebin.com/fYrC6tAZ
One last thing before i have to throw away my phone. I couldnt leave well enough alone. I did this "fastboot flash boot boot.img" as you stated in the post above. It was successful. I then entered this one "fastboot flash system system.img", and it failed (said the img was too big or something) so I did the "fastboot-windows reboot" command and it is now stuck on the white HTC MyTouch 4g splashscreen. Is my phone toast? My PC no longer recognizes that my phone is connected to the USB port, however I can hold the volume dwn & power button and it comes on in the hboot mode.Is there any hope?
Also, when I boot it up by vol/dwn & pwr, the Hboot screen comes up and finds the PD15IMG that is on my sd card, goes through a 1 minute or so process (a blue status bar loads in top right corner), then it just stays on the hboot. It did that before it stuck on the splash screen, but never actually wrote anything i dont beleive.
OK its letting me use FASTBOOT and here is exactly what I got when i tried to flash the 2nd file in your post above. It came from the PD15IMG.zip as you instructed:
C:\adb>fastboot flash system system.img
sending 'system' (571388 KB)... FAILED (remote: data length is too large)
finished. total time: 0.016s
Can someone please let me know if there is hope for my phone? I can communicate with it through Fastboot (on my PC) and it will boot up in hboot mode. But it WON'T go past the Tmobile/MyTouch splash screen. If I get it fixed, I promise to never touch it again until I study! I truly feel there is hope, but I think don't know enough to figure it out. I loaded the PD15IMG on my SD, and it attempts to flash it, (a blue status bar appears in top right corner and fills up in about 90 seconds), but afterwards, it still sticks on splashscreen. Is there anything I can do to fix it? Anything I can flash it with in Fastboot? Please anyone?
You mixed 2 ways, and did it completely wrong way. And you didn't attempt to flash the recovery at all.
The first part, that went well (till ./flashgc), already prepared your phone for downgrading, and you should have recognized and understood it. You don't need anything else, no flashes from bootloader or anything. All you needed was to continue - put PD15IMG.ZIP on the SD card, reboot into bootloader, and let it downgrade.
You can still do it, so please do.

Once you end up on 2.2.1, please follow the "Ultimate rooting guide" from Development section, and flash Engineering bootloader.

Thank for your response. I have tried doing the PD15IMG.zip by booting my phone in bootloader mode. It finds the PD15IMG.zip and then a blue progress bar appears in the top right corner of the phone, finishes in about 90 seconds, the a message appears that says "wrong zip file". I would be happy just to get my phone back on with the gingerbread 2.3.4 on it, and simply leave it alone until I know what Im doing. Is there a way to just flash the original s/w back on it? If so if you could tell me how I will not mess with it again until I study alot more. But flashing the PD15IMG doesnt appear to be working for me.
Download the file again, and check MD5SUM on it before you use it.
If it responds "wrong ZIP" - it's because the ZIP is corrupted. When you'll download a good ZIP, it'll work.

Ok you were right, the one I had the wrong MD5SUM, but i d/l the correct one, it had the correct MD5SUM, but it still gave me the "wrong zip file error". I feel like there is hope, but I cant figure this out!! Thank you for trying, is there anything else I can do? I also tried going into recovery and doing factory reset/ data wipe etc...but it continues to get stuck on the splash screen....
How did you copy the correct one to the phone's SD card, and where did you put it? You either didn't copy it to your SD card, or named it wrong, or put it in wrong location, not overwriting the older file.
In any case, if flashing PD15IMG fails for you:
Download CWM recovery from here:
http://download.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-glacier.img
Boot to bootloader.
Enter FASTBOOT.
Execute:
fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-glacier.img
Boot to recovery. You should have Clockworkmod.
Download a stock rooted 2.2.1 ROM from Development section.
Flash it in Clockworkmod recovery.
Extract boot.img from this ROM.
Flash it in fastboot, using "fastboot flash boot boot.img".
Boot into the ROM.
Proceed with gfree.
OK!! I got it fixed and it all makes sense to me now! I flashed the 2.2.1 boot.img to my phone, when it still had the 2.3.4 on it. It was as simple as that. I hadnt flashed the downgrade on it when I flashed the boot.img and I guess it was a mismatch. I read your last post to extract the "boot.img" from the rom and then it clicked! Yesterday I wrote the 2.2.1 boot img. to a phone that had 2.3.4...so I found a stock 2.3.4 rom, extracted the boot.img from it a BAM! its rolling again....thank you so much....
Yes, indeed, you flashed a mismatched, older kernel to your ROM. I was suggesting that you install custom recovery and change the ROM to match your boot.img, but the other way around also works - as long as you don't need to root your phone, that is.

Well I will soon attempt it again, however I think I need to read a little more so I can understand the concept of what I am doing. I learned a ton by making that mistake. But as soo as I got it fixed, I couldnt resist, I used revovery and flashed [ROM]:: ProjectMIUI 2.2.17 [R6]- UPDATED 2/21/12 - [Stable + Smooth from the DEV section and I have never been happier with my phones performance! I will soon try the cyanmod, but I want to chill with this rom for a week or so. Again, I appreciate your help, I learned alot.
As long as you don't mind flashing kernels separately using fastboot for each ROM you flash, you can go indefinitely and flash ROMs as much as you like with your current setup, not needing anything else. The only good reason for you to go for S-OFF would be to flash Engineering HBOOT, to be able to flash kernels from recovery directly, avoiding extra fastboot step.
Also, thanks for finally confirming that you can flash recovery using fastboot on HTC-Dev-unlocked device. There was one device that didn't allow it (I think Incredible S, but not sure), so it's good to know that on MT4G it works as it should.
