TF300 WIFI issue! - Transformer TF300T General

I recently purcheased the TF300 shortly after it came out and have loved it so far. Though I have had a couple issues with it. One thing I noticed is that when I am in a room outside of my wireless router (around 20-25 ft away), and have the TF300 in my lap, the wireless connection will greatly drop of. It will go down from 75% to about 40%.
What I found was that if I hold the TF300 up with my hands gripping the bottom of the tablet, I will get good reception. However, when I put both my hands around the top of the back of the tablet, the wireless connection drops immediately. I means it's immediately noticable.
Does anybody else have this issue? Is this common with all tablets? It kindof feels like the "grip of death" that the Iphone 4's had.

as long as you dont hold it over the wifi receptor it will be fine

Thanks for the reply.
I guess the main issue isn't me holding my hands over the top of the back of the tablet (testing to see where specifically the issue was), it's when I have it laid down on any surface, like my lap, or on the sofa... seems that whenever there is an obstruction of the top of the tablet, the wireless connection greatly decreases.
Is this true for other tablets? I've never noticed this with my Samsung Galaxy SII using wireless

I picked up the tf300 yesterday. i havent noticed this with this one yet, i used to with my ipad 1g. its a fault of any wireless device thats designed to be as low power as possible. Also, you could try changing channels so a less noisy band (that can also play a part)
It has to do with antenna orientation, you can spin it slowly and watch it change signal levels. for this reason i have my router antennas positioned one upright, and the other straight out. This works for me as the router will use the signal from whichever antenna has the clearest reception.

Micro Center Selling TF300 for $349.99 32G Blue
Most reviewers say it's plasticky, no ips+ screen and slower speed than the Prime. I think these negative remakrs is affecting the price. it's almost as cheap as a brand new TF101-B1.

After changing channels on my wireless router and moving the antennas on it.. I have not had anymore issues with the WIFI. I think it works great. videos stream instantly.

OMG! HD2 has same grip reception flaw as iPhone 4

If you hold the phone in your left hand - just like the iPhone 4's "wrong" grip (your skin presses against the lower left side of the phone) watch reception bars go down 1 or 2 bars. The longer you leave your hand there, the more the bars go down. Release and they are up again. Tried it with and without a case. Same issue.
Just because it happens to HD2 does not necessarily become a problem.
I could also reproduce that on my iPhone 3GS and 3G in some location but not in all locations. I didn't even realise this until people start complaining about iPhone 4. To reduce the signal, i have to grip it (without using a case) very tightly without lettting go for a long time. If I periodically relax my hand as I would in normal usage, then signal won't go down. As this is not the way I normally grip, and the fact that I've been using my phones for so long without even knowing there is a "problem" probably means that I have nothing to worry about.
Then, I searched the youtube and found out that it is also happening to Nokia phones:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gi1gHDa7-X0
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yQ7t75Uo6qQ
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=amPG52DVQuk
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Zsuxbd0L0g
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MyLrFY3mI0M
Nokia is trying to fool everyone by saying that users can hold their phones in anyway they want, but this is simply not true. See this:
http://www.appleinsider.com/article...at_iphone_4_death_grip_gets_called_on_it.html
Haven't got an iPhone 4 yet, but my impression is that this issue is more pronounced with it. IMO, although it can be easily fixed by using a case, applying a sticky tape or nail polish over the lower left half of the antenna, Apple would definitely need to address this issue so that out of the box the extent of signal strengh reduction is minimized.
I didn't say it was a problem. I was just shocked to find it out after all this time I had it and never knew. Hence the OMG!
I think the phenomena is likely to exist with every phone, in certain locations, with certain hand type, but owners of the phone may not notice it unless they deliberately test it out. I could only produce that phenomena is one part of my house but not in another. Just like half the iPhone 4 owners were not able to reproduce this problem while about half were able to. My guess is that it has nothing to do with manufacturing defects, but simply a case of the location, orientation, and body type.
There have been discussions about that at the beginning on the HD2. The antenna is in the bottom part of the phone, between the bottom and the start of the metal cover, i.e. where your hand is (as stated in the manual).
The end word is that pretty much every phone on the market will have its reception drop a bit when you hold it.
FCC only allows the antenna to be located at the bottom of the phone, away from the user's brain. Also, the level of signal strengh must not exceed what's allowed. So, even if the manufacturer want to relocate the antenna to the top part of the phone so that user's hand could not touch it so easily, it would not be approved. Simiilary, even if the manufacturer could increase the signal strength, it would not be approved.

I heard that the fastest and cheapest way to solve teh Iphone 4 reception problem was to put a condom over it. They are cheaper than the bumper and are available in a varitey of colors and textures. The added plus is that you always have a condom handy should you need one
Classic Apple!
Let HTC and Nokia work tirelessly for years upon years only to one-up them with a bigger shinier version of a feature EVERY smartphone has had since 2003.
Sheesh.

Your recommendation would suit youself my friend. I'll use a nice looking case.
Basically every phone has way to hold it which will lower signal strength. With most smartphones it is rather easy. Most phones also have picture in manual how to hold it correctly. It's nothing new.
The HD2 issue your mentioning is a normal reaction to covering an antenna. This SHOULD happen in all phones since you are partially blocking the antena.
The iPhone 4 issue is not similar, if you go through this post:
http://gizmodo.com/5571171/iphone-4-loses-reception-when-you-hold-it-by-the-antenna-band
you'll see that the signal loss is due to connecting the left side of the antenna with the bottom by touching the left side and the bottom (left) portion of the phone. If you put a "Bumper", apple's term for cover, and then hold the iphone in exactly the same way, you will not lose the signal.

Yes, thats because the singal has to go through your hand, so it might lose a bar or two.
All phones get this.
The Iphones problem is not the same thing, it just hast he same result.
if i leave any phone I've ever had in pretty much any spot in my house the signal flutuates.
sod all to do with holding it.
just use a BT headset
anyone cares for some duct tape?

lol... Snapperheads...
If you watch the iphone vid on youtube showing the 'making of' the phone you'll notice the alloy frame is the antenna... Covering it will help not to drop the reception... But having to have a cover to not lose reception is a joke...
As for the HD2, all phones held in a hand will have variance in reception... I tried the left hand thing on mine and it didn't drop a bar...
i have no problem with mine........may be the signal/reception from my carrier is really great unlike that in US.....
LOL good thing i'm not left handed

Got a Transformer today - impressions on defects

Hi,
I just received my Asus Transformer (32GB) today. Thought I'd give my thoughts on the defects that have been mentioned on the forum.
I'm really happy with my Transformer. The light bleed is minimal. At 100% brightness, I can see the lower left and the two spots along the bottom, but it's really not that distracting. I don't' notice it in dark scenes in movies.
No speaker issues - good balance, no pop (yet).
I started charging (and using at the same time) at 30%, and it took about two hours to charge to 100%. Charger does get pretty hot.
I updated to v3.1. But the little bit of playing I did before that was fine. Pretty responsive screen. Note, other people seem to indicate the default desktop is the active one with the glass? Mine came with a tree/hill static desktop.
Build Number: HMJ37.US_epad-8.4.4.5-20110527
I don't know if that's a software build or a hardware build on May 27, 2011?
Wi-fi is fast (1.3 mBps on one download). GPS and compass works great. MicroSD card works good. Plays movies OK, but I don't have any HD movies yet...play 350MB / 50 minute AVI's fine.
Slight plastic squeek on the left back side between the back and the bezel. No biggie.
Video capture from the back camera (5MP) better than I thought. I saw reviews where there were a lot of artifacts and skipping. No issues with this build.
Overall, really snappy! Only hiccup was at some point (after the 3.1 update, after I had installed and played a few games), I flipped the tablet around and the screen turn into the black screen with the Asus logo in the middle. Couldn't get it to go away until I push the power button. Touch screen didn't do anything. Who knows.
Every piece of technology has is glitches, some are minor while others can be maddening. Especially when you're on the cutting edge. Overall the TF is a very good product and I'm certain Asus will fix what it can. I've been a corporate buyer of Asus products since the early '90s and have always trusted their products.

Well said.
Everyone is new to honeycomb and the hardware platform. One thing I have really started to understand is that there is no perfect device - everything has it's good and bad points. I'm am very happy with the TF overall because for my useage the good far outweighs the bad.
I don't really know when mine came off the manufacturing line. But, if mine is the latest off the line, maybe they're starting to work out the quality bugs? I hope.

Same here. This is actually my second Transformer. The first one I got from Best Buy had a vertical line on panel 3/4 that would show up pretty often. Tried to return it to them for a replacement but they were out of stock (of course). Then I bought my second one at Newegg and returned the first. Second one has no defects. Screen, cameras, speakers all good. No light bleed. I get a little creak in the right bottom corner but that is only when picking it up one handed. I imagine that puts a little stress on the case considering the weight of the device and I probably shouldn't do so
My personal experience with the Transformer has been generally great, especially given the price they ask for it.
But, Honeycomb in all honesty leaves a lot to be desired.
It never made the best impression on me when I bought my Transformer, but this week I picked up a Samsung Galaxy S2 and using Android 2.3 on a new high-end phone has really highlighted for me how much room for improvement there is for Honeycomb.
Honeycomb looks pretty and has a well thought out layout, but the stability and usability need improvement. Sadly with ICS on the way we'll probably have to wait until the end of the year to have a tablet-optimized Android that works anywhere as well as Android does on phones.
Im also on my second one after getting it replaced due to light bleed... no big deal.
If only.... there had been plenty of stock when released, there were no light bleed issues, speaker balance, buggy o/s it would be perfect.
But I still think its better then an ipad due to the freedom it gives in customization.
And I love streaming movies using upnp on my home wifi from nas perfectly
Same here. Minimun light bleed, some speaker unbalance, but no cracking nor any other thing.
Mine came stock with the tree wallpaper, and I have the water and ice also avaible.
Pretty happy with it.
I'm on my third one.a little crack on the lefthand since but other than that it's fine. Been reading a comparison on the Samsung GT 10.1 forum and everybody says that GT10.1 is much better. Why? Because it has a flash? And no microsd

Malandro, how are you streaming movies? I have an Asus router w/ USB port running tomato, and I can connect a USB HD to it for the UPNP. But, when I try playing large avi's, it tries to download the whole thing before playing it, so I haven't played any movies on it, figure it wasn't capable of streaming?
edit: what movie app are you using? Also, what does your network look like? Router w/ USB external HD also? Can you stream off of windows shares (SMB) files?
As for my personal experience, no big complaints here but I think the creak on the left side is unacceptable for a device costing 400€, and one that for me highlights the lack of quality control in the manufacturing stage...
Other than that this is a fine device but Honeycomb still has to evolve as a platform, and I wished developers would see the vast android user market as one to take advantage of.
i.e. Simultaneous releases on both iOS and Android would be nice

I noticed that which direction you put the plug in makes a difference...since it can be plugged in both ways.
upside down gets warm....right side up not so much.
Right side up is looking at the plug like it's a face....the round hole on the bottom with the slots like they're eyes....and plug the TF plug in so you can read the ASUS when the plug goes in...

Interesting. I haven't come across that idea in the forums before. Basically, if the power strip was a face, you're putting the Asus tatoo on the forehead of the face
I'm charging mine now right side up, so we'll see. I forget which orientation I had it in last time.

The main problem with upside down charger is the polarity. Some have reported minor shocks. I say minor because it charges at what 15 volts? I am an electrician and used to shocks so that much is hardly negligible to me, more of an annoyance. I think to get a decent one 24 volts or more would be necessary but that does depend on circumstance and other factors. Everyone's sensitivity to shock is different. Best to keep it plugged in correctly.
Bought mine from BB about a month ago. If there's light bleed I'd have to be in a completely dark room with a dark screen to tell. Seems like a good build. No speaker problems except total volume is low. No creaks. No screen separation. 3.1 honeycomb?.... it and the programs written for it still need some work. The new Sammy looked nice at the store. Nice enough to take mine back and pay more for less features? No. I like my TF. I'm keeping mine. Got the dock on the way....

When your taking about download speeds why are you quoting '1.3 mBps' as bits everybody on the entire planet would think you're talking about bytes. it 25 bytes = 209715200 bits, give or take a few pancakes
We have virgin broadband at home and work, if i run an ADSL cable from the router direct to my laptop (no interference) at work i can scrape 32 megabytes
I certainly wouldn't be able to do my job at 2.2 megabytes!

So, if the power strip is with the holes up (like the eyes on a face) the usb plug on the charger would be on the downside? or on the upside?
I stream my content using upnp, from an external hdd plugged into a router via usb, with buzz player (Paid app).
EDIT: Plex server for windows (Free) + Plex for android (Paid) also work pretty good.

[Q] Xperia Play Wi-Fi issues

Hey guys,
Has anyone else noticed the terrible wi-fi capacility of the xperia play? Most of the time I pretty much have to be in the same room as my router in order to have a decent internet-connectivity. As soon as theres one thin wooden wall between the router and my play i have virtually no connectivity.
The Samsung Galaxy S seemed to have similar problems, but when compared to the connectivity of any kind of Iphone the difference is monumental
Is the Iphone's hardware just soooo much better, or does it have to do with the device's programming? Would a different kernel fix things?
I'd be glad for any kind of input. Thanks in advance!
So I guess no one has any answers to this... Except for buying a stronger router or Wi-fi amplifier

Reception in general on the Xperia Play has been a touchy issue. If you compare the actual dBm to another device, they are fairly close, with the Play often being a bit on the worse side. That being said, no easy way to increase connection power.
If you look at the schematics, there are ports that you could plug an external antenna into, but it would require modding the case (drilling holes, mounting plugs/adapters, etc). I'm working on my own case-mod that will do all of this for One of the two Cell ports and the WiFi port, but this is a personal hardware hack and not something done in software.
As to kernel settings for things like power boost or whatever else, you may have to talk to the folks on the FreeXperia project, or maybe DoomLord or FraserTag, as they have a bit of experience with the kernel on this phone. I'm not sure there is a programmatic way of increasing the power and/or reception sensitivity on the phone without hardware hacks.
All else aside, just try not to cover the back of the phone and possibly point the back of the phone in the direction of the signal (your router, cell tower, etc). That solves 50% of cases.
Thanks for the Reply!
I figured it's some kind of hardware issue...
Anyway thanks for clearing things up and thanks for the tips. Guess ill just have to drill a few holes in my floors and walls to have enough Wifi all over in the house
Good luck with your hardware hack! Seems to be kinda risky
Reception for me has been a lot better after updating to 2.3.3
I noticed if I leave the screen locked for a while, the wifi shuts off.. I'm guessing sony ericsson made it like that on purpose to save battery. My reason for thinking that is because it never cuts out while in use.
Sent from my R800
When I was using the rogers smc stock modem/router my play would keep disconnecting in the living room. I bought a netgear wnr3500L and it hasn't disconnected since. I do realize that the reception is weaker then the iphone 4 though
Sent from my XPlay using XDA App.
Reception occasionally drops but not that much my x10i does much better never loses connection guess it's a hardware issue
You can fix this often by re positioning your wifi router. For who doesnt know look up for how wifi signals travel travel around your house. Before you drill holes in your floor. You can also stuff a laptop wifi antenta in your play. There was a software hack for increasing output from wifi tx=100 or something but that was in froyo and not sure. I guess you can google tx power hack android
Problem is likely your house or your router.
I have both the Galaxy S Captivate and the Xperia Play. No problems with wifi reception whatsoever here.

Nothing to extraordinary. A few tiny holes drilled in plastic, some little coax pigtail adapters running to a junction where there are other adapters in the back cover, plus leaders that run some flat metal tape/wire in specific lengths on the inside of the back cover to have an extra tiny bit of antenna. Not sure on how it will hold in regards to interference though of multiple antennas. If it causes poor results, I'll just be modding it to run to the external interfaces and then plug in a big antenna that sits in my window, or runs to my car or whatever. I may make a custom car-dock and desk-dock to go with it.
If/when I get around to finishing it, I'll post pictures.

I've noticed this. It is the same way for the cellular service. It's ridiculous how low the bars are. However, the actual data transfered is extremely high. I've done some research and it seems that the bar count is low for high connection. And the bar is high for ridiculously high connection.

About the signal when holding the top of 6P

Is there anyone found the problem that when holding the top of 6P, Wi-Fi signal will reach a very low level or even lose connection? Is there any solutions? I think it is too inconvenient to play games or watch videos.
This problem is similar to the "death holding" in iPhone 4, I'm surprised that it happened on the Nexus 6P released 6 years later...

It is definitely real but just like you said it is similar to the death grip of iPhone 4. Unless you grip the phone hard around the top it has little effect. If you grip it hard you can essentially attenuate the signal to zero. Non-issue as far as I'm concerned. It has never caused me to lose signal significantly when using the phone in landscape for YouTube or gaming either. It's clear where the WiFi and other antennas are on the phone. Just don't hold it there. For once I agree with Apple - you're holding it wrong if it's causing you a problem.

Okay...... Maybe it is the only answer... It is one of the general problems on metal phones? If it is, I may choose a glass phone(like honor 8) as my next phone.
What!! I never heard of this issue on the 6P before, but sure enough... Full bars and then I wrap my hand around the top and watched it immediately drop to less than half way. Let go and it's back to full. Wow...

I would suggest that if you hard grip ANY phone where the antennas are then you will attenuate the signal. It may be a little bit less obvious with a glass phone but it can still happen. For example, the iPhone 4 as you said was the first phone this was noticed on and that was Glass design.
I would guess that you could probably also do this on a plastic phone, it's just not so obvious where the antennas are on plastic phones because they don't have a plastic antenna stripes.

I noticed it when I was downloading a game and in the meantime watching a video. Wi-Fi lost connection and it switched to LTE, when I had less than 50MB data at the end of a month. It cost me more 10RMB and scared me. If I didn't notice it and turned off the LTE soon, maybe I would lost all the money in my account...
Hahah mine does it on LTE also been that way long as I can remember. when I watch YouTube in landscape mode I have to hold it with my right hand so that my left hand doesn't interfere with the signal..

Shield tablet K1 successful WiFi signal modification.

First things first, the WiFi reception on these tablets is garbage. They placed the antenna on the lower left hand corner of the tablet, right where your hands or other obstructions would be.
Besides that, the antenna is very small.
I used a molex adhesive cellular/WiFi antenna and can achieve a 8-12dbm gain in areas that had 76dbm or less reception levels.
Its very easy to do and can be configured back to stock very easily for warranty issues or whatnot.
Edit: moderator, could you move this? I posted from mobile and it seems I posted to the wrong forum.

Can you show a video of how to do it before this thread get moved?
The "cellular data" tag would infer that it is a 3g/4g antenna rather than a 2.4Ghz/5Ghz antenna - does it work with both bands only I notice that Molex do offer specific Antennas aimed at both Wifi bands used by the Shield. Thanks.

The print on the antenna doesn't include all of the bands it covers.

How well does the back sit with this antenna installed? I'd be tempted to install two of them at right angles to each other.

Can you please point out which one is the best? https://eu.mouser.com/search/refine.aspx?Ntk=P_MarCom&Ntt=178376642

There's only one coax plug, so two antennae may be an issue. It does not add anything to the back, as there's just enough clearance under the back cover for it to fit.

Mine is the 100mm unit.
Does this really work? Surprised nobody thought of this before. This is my biggest beef with this device. 2 bars or worse. Can't even keep a You Tube stream from glitching out. Gonna try it!

Works great for me. Gained -8dbm in an area that I could only get 92dbm before.

So I did this last night. I installed the same antennae as you did. I ordered the 100mm - it was quite a bit longer than the one in your picture but I routed the lead next to the battery which was fine.
I do think it helped - perhaps not the miracle cure I was hoping for. I seem to not be experiencing the same frequency of freezes and glitches when gamestreaming - however I did still see a couple of instances of the low signal indicator with 2 bars when streaming. Streaming from You Tube is still nowhere near as smooth as my other devices, a shield portable, kindle tablets and my Iphone or Ipad - more buffering and pauses.
ultimately, I do recommend the mod as it is easy, cheap and I think an improvement over the stock antennae..
Thanks for posting your experiment!

I think there are better options for this antenna. First off the one the user selected is a cellular/wifi antenna and you don't need any cellular signal frequencies since unless you have the LTE version shield. I am going to buy a 2.4ghz/5ghz wifi only antenna and see how that works, should work much better than the one used in this mod.

Can u please share your findings once this is done? Appreciate it.

Such an easy enhancement
Good Afternoon Everyone,
I was successful at completing this mod as well. Although I didn't have any real problems with my Wifi Reception, it seems a little bit better than what it was. Here's a picture of it installed!
Take care, :good:

Hey, so I don't know exactly the db, but it works better from further away from the Router in my house. Maybe it's a placebo effect, but it feels like it's better. You can buy it from here -> Click Me. :good:
Thanks,
-Elo
Turn off the Wifi Scanning. I was having the same issue, my K1 wouldn't connect to ANY Wifi spots. I'd forget them, reconnect, restart, nothing. Turning off the Wifi Scanning feature, it instantly connected. Hope this helps others.
