[q] Music quality in Sense Builds vs. AOSP/AOKP/CM9? - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

So lately I've been alternating a lot between Gingerbread with Sense and Ics with AOKP. Apart from the obvious performance ICS has over GB&Sense, the Sense builds excel in one thing and that's music sound quality. It's not even the Beats audio thing because even in builds with no Beats, the sound quality in Sense builds is SO much better, it's really annoying to use ICS. The music isn't just bass-less, but even high tones sound crackled and bad under the same speakers/headphones they sound REALLY good at on Sense builds.
What causes this? Could this be the infamous Bravia engine I've seen touted about on the forum?
If so, is it portable to ICS?
If not, is there any solution for the poor music quality under ICS?

I've notice the same thing. with Ics rom when its loud sounds like the music its damaged. With GB plays great

This is true.
Now Im using ICS ROM. Playing music with PowerAmp and the quality is great. Player has many settings to improve the music quality.

you also could try flashing beats audio from the android market.

Tried flashing Beats Audio, never could get it to work.
As for the other replies - are you guys suggesting this is the player app's fault rather than the actual kernel?

For me dsp manager with some settings(i don't remember, i'm on sense 3.5) works fine but i agree with you that sense roms are the best in audio (loud and great bass)

Beats

Hi on numerous forums ive seen talk of beats etc,not that im going to jizz in my pants but has this been a perfected intergration or just loads of testing etc
ive checked the forums, but its so random, with loads of post, anyone just 'know' off the top of there head
Seems to be working perfectly on RCMix3d runnymede 1.4, i certainly don't have any problems with it.

I have beats by dre studios and DHD i put RCMix3d runnymede 1.4 and the beats software works great. But it's nothing i mean if you use powerAMP and put the equalizer to Bass & Treeble the quality (with beats studios always) is much better than with the beats software..
That's all software . No hardware changes in BEAT phones unfortunately . SRS/Wow effects ... such a crap.
By yourself a quality headsets, that could make you a difference.

The beats software in say...the sensation xe can (somehow) detect what type of headphones you have(so there is a hardware difference) and it base different sound for each type of beats headphones.......you have beats studios....and in rcmix runny the default(because we cannot get our phone to detect it) is beats solo....that's why it doesn't sound as good....I have beats solo and it sounds reallly good with beats solo and some skullcandies

it has been integrated into the rom and works very well. I am using the rom as in my signature
Thanks for all the replys,if its just more of a gimmick i might leave it,i know an eq might just do the job. I have tried runnys rom its very nice, but sadly sense 3.5 has left me saddened by the overall grey tone of it all lol.Iphone..htc's are not!.The rosie is a bit of a cruncher as well. Also the keyboard has no arrows! something ive come to find extremeley useful.Im not putting the rom down though, thats why custom roms are out there and thriving haha. You like what you like. Im still waiting for insertcoin to get his ass in gear and come over to the hd a bit more.He was a legend on my old desire
I like SRS more than Dolby or Beats.
SRS is good with more Bass.
Dolby is for speakers and it doesn't sound good for headphones.
Beats is too flat and may sound good with Beats headphones, I am not sure.
I am using Audio Technica ATH M50.

Have tested on both devices so thought just in case no one has seen this sweetness
Maybe some Rom will do this along with Sony Cam patch ;-)
Read developers op before you flash and have fun they're 3 different files to flash so read and see which one works for you.
The beats logo won't show nor will you see and equalizer option you will however hear the difference!
Sent from my HTC Inspire 4G using Tapatalk
Is this working on ICS?
Update:
Link for file in OP does mention it working on all versions, including ICS.
I flashed it on ICS and there are no apps or icons but I think its working, music sounds good anyway.
Yes it works on ics and its still beta so no icons or "proof" but I can tell you I can tell a big difference!

Installed on my A500 no problem, had to use the newest zip to get it though. Helped the sound quite a bit.
Quick question...did you install it on your Inspire too? And did it work?

No, Beats headphones really have nothing to do with it for the most part. They may be more tailored to it, but overall sound quality should be improved with a good headset.
Nothing can improve the sound quality from the stock speakers
Except an "audio out" port
No luck installing
I downloaded the zip, but it wouldn't flash in CWM so I tried to extract it manually using root explorer. Then I did a reboot and fixed permissions, only to find out that my music player stopped playing almost all of my files (only 2 albums out of my ~1800 songs played) on Google Play Music. I ensured all the files were copied properly, rebooted to recovery and fixed permissions again, this time I got stuck in a boot loop. Ended up re-flashing my ROM and setting up everything again. Pretty sure I did something wrong, but I have no clue what. Judging from some of the responses in the main thread, it doesn't seem like it works anyway... Oh well, I'll stick with Dolby Advanced Audio for now..

My R11.5 special edition will have this beats audio mod and the bravia engine patch build in.
Got it running on my tab now for testing.
Just don't know which I should pick , I got the sgs20317 build in now and runs and installs fine.
EDIT
After some more testing I'm not building in the beats audio mod as it breaks musicFX equalizer in play music app.

Yea I think its been discussed in the original thread. Where some users experience broken equalizers on some media players. Have you tried the one not made for the sgs2? Like the test version or stable beta?
I will look and test the newer versions as I never tested them except on my phone awhile back no longer needed it due to my phone has beats included.

Quality of sound on different ROMs

I decided to start this thread just because there is one think that is very important for me. It is music quality. As I noticed, there are some differences in audio quality between ROMs. For example for me CM9 plays much worse than stock ICS (both tested on Poweramp player).
Do you have any suggestions which ROM for Galaxy S2 has the best music quality? Or maybe you have some nice configuration for SGS2 that sounds better than others?
What a pity that Samsung built a Yamaha sound chip in this phone. That one made by Wolfson which is installed in SGS, SGS3 and iPhone's is much better...

I've noticed that the volume on a lot of stock ROMs is low, the quality differs per Rom.
But with a custom ROM like CM9 there are a lot of ways to change it to your likings, e.g. adjusting the music volume. And use mp3's of reasonable quality. Setting high volume on low bitrate mp3's sounds like crap...
So just perform a nandroid backup and try flashing a CM9 or CM10 ROM. Can't hurt to try...

The best sound I got was using PlayerPro + DSP package on any rom ...

which gives the best sound rom ?

Do you think... which rom is better gives volume and bass
Pls.... sense 3.6 and 4.0 4.1 To comment on these versions
Not ;important for me to bass...!!!
