Stock tablet, no root or super kernel etc..
Last update done. still the RR on effects, excepts, now it wont start again.
I'm stuck at the spinning circle.
How can i fix that ?
Or i'm seriously thinking of throwing that &*@# back to asus.
Anyone on the same boat ?
So when you power it off and power it on again, it freezes sometime during the ASUS boot animation every time?

Yes, always the spinning circle, not freezed, always spinn, nothing more.. until battery die i suppose.
What are the first few characters of your serial number, because you're probably going to have to NVFlash that, if your device will allow it.

It is one of the first, i don't have it right now, i'll have to look at the box, cause the sticker is not there anymore.
If i have to do something out of the usual, i'll just send it back to asus.. this is a non working unit that need to be repair, or replaced, or they can put it where i think.

ok i'll try this at home, i'll plug it before to be sure.
and i'll came back to you.
If you have one of the early units, it should definitely be NVFlashable. The symptoms sound like a system file or system files have been corrupted. NVFlashing the unit with a "known good" image should correct that. Unless there are hardware problems as well, I would not send it in for warranty repair, because there is always a chance that it comes back with more hardware problems than it currently has, whether due to bad technical work or due to transit. With an NVFlash-capable device, almost all software problems can be resolved on our own.

Yes, try baseballfanz suggestion first. It's worth a shot, and it's easy. With any luck, that'll be all that's needed.

I've tried the wipe data, and it is working now.
All apps are being re-instaled right now.
Thanks a lot.
As for my satisfaction of the asus tablet, it is getting worse, let's just say if they don't fixe the RR and vpn soon.. well, you know, when the time will come to buy another one, the choice will be made easier by elimination.
I was this close, to either throw it back at them, or just crush it with a hammer... i don't care for the cost, we have to pay for our error. Mine might just have been to pick up that tablet from asus.
Future will tell us.
Have you tried holding down the power button for at least 10 seconds? Sounds like one of the reported problems lots of people are having.

ok so basically i installed a custom rom, great.. not really.
it wouldn't connect to a network, my usb failed and countless other things were missing.
fine and dandy, rom manager asked me to do a backup of my original rom so i'll just load that... file unloadable.
great.
Miraculously i managed to get a new rom on my sd card and installed it.
got stuck at bootscreen then loaded in to a black screen that only showed the notification bar.
by now i've gotten pretty flustered and figure a battery pull should re set everything and let it load up fine (after all i'm a previous bb user lol)
but no
no, now my phone won't even power on.. even when i plug it into the wall to charge the screen stays black.
holding any button combination doesn't work..
its literally a brick.
is there any way to fix this?
so far all i've found are fixes for "soft bricks"
sounds like i'm a little past that stage...
Ok, take out the battery, sim, and sd card from your phone. Now with the battery out, plug the phone into the usb and connect to pc. Now, while holding down the volume up/down at the same time, but NOT the power button, put in the battery. And there you should have download mode, odin away.
Good luck.

well i had just bought it that day so it was covered under warranty.
i took it back and told them the upgrade to 2.2 did it.
they gave me a new one no questions,
it also helps that i work for them and am their tech guy so they would have given me the phone to try to fix had it been a customer lol.

Send it back to Acer. They'll fix it, but you'll have to pay for shipping.
wow they ll fix it for free you think ?
they wont charge me 1000$ ?
Acer has a single pricing repair .The cost for this in the us.is.199.99 dollars. I have called them in the past. However I do not know about just fixing a bootloader issue. Something that they should give a way to the end user to do from there home.but then again they lock these devices to protect software rights of digital copyright and so on.
Call them but be honest as to what you done. They will figure it out anyway.
You can also contact sc2k here on this forum. He might be able to help you.

EDIT2: lol somehow i managed to get into acer download state with pbj20upgrade.
installing 3.0.1 now.
i think i was stuck in this mode and the devices waited for data or something
EDIT3: if anyone has the same problem try this:
install andoid sdk!
start pbj20
click next
turn out iconia
turn it on
if you are in APX mode (look in sys settings> devices and printer), youre good to go
it will check for versions

You interrupted the update...this is something you should never do when updating a devices firmware/bootloader and your tablet probably has an incomplete firmware/bootloader, as a result.
BTW: have you tried pressing VOL- and PWR, to load the recovery image: i mean if that would work at all, given your circumstances?
Ok try to make this brief.
Just got a refurb A500 3 days ago.
Totally stock firmware, NOT SURE WHAT VERSION
Day one works great, tells me there is an update...I do said update. (I don't recall any of the update numbers.)
go to bed wake up next day...spend day 2 customizing/downloading Apps. learning the device in general.
Get home on day 2 and turn it back on....small update needs done. download small update, system restarts, and then the gears inside the Android quit spinning.
EDIT adding some thoughts:
I realize this may be a hardware issue (being a refurb)...it seems odd to me that it just started ater a small update I did.
I wait about 30 minutes, nothing happens.
So I power down, power back up. Brings me to the unlock screen. Won't respond to anything.
I tried the power plus volume down, cache clear...nothing.(didn't get me anywhere)
When doing the following:
1. Turn off your tablet
2. Place the screen lock button on the left (red not visible)
3. Hold Volume UP + Power button
4. After the vibration, release the power button and toggle the screen switch few times left-right until you see the following lines appear on the screen
Erasing Userdata...
Erasing Cache...
It just sits at the "Erasing Cache..." until I power it back down.
Been to this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113878
and tried a full version from 3.0,3.1, and 3.2. All have the same results....the android comes on and the green bar at the bottom gets to about 90%...gears stop moving, bar stops moving.
When I try to boot it back up, sometimes it just hangs at the "android" screen. other times it will boot into a "system shut down" screen.
I have no idea what to do. I don't want to (and don't think it would if I tried, to root this). But I do want to get it working. For the 12 hours or so it was working, I LOVED IT!
Any ideas/thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
I have never owned an Android tablet, nor have I ever rooted any device...so I am still pretty new.
I did search, but could not find any answers....so here I am asking you guys.
ideas ?
No ideas ? That's a bummer.
Gotta give some time for people to respond. It's friday, and a lot of folks need to actually "do some real work"
Check this link, Option 2
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1276227
Now, this will give you an unstable version of an early version 3. But, it will allow you to root, and run Acer Recovery (between the errors) that will in turn allow you to run a stock rooted ROM.
Word of advice. Copy the files to SD first. That way, it'll be easier. Place them in the root of the SD>
You can get acer recovery from the http market.
Iconia root.apk, you can get that zip from the "rooting threads" here in the forums.
Also, while you are downloading, grab a stock Pre-rooted rom from the dev section, or a somewhat semi-cooked one like Harkon.
After you have successfully ran the first step, then install the iconia root.apk using the file manager. Then, acer recovery to install your recovery.
Let it run it's course, then re-boot to recovery (vol - and pwr, till you see the text in the upper left corner, then release the buttons.
Do a wipe on all 3, User data, cache partition, then select Advanced, wipe delvak cache, back out,, and select "Install zip from SD", remember, after you select each one, you still will be required to navigate to the selected item, and select it again.
Then "select zip", and select the Harkon zip, or whatever you downloaded,
Let it go. Might take 20 minutes, who knows. So best to have a fully charged battery. It will tell you when finished.
I would guess, you didn't let things finish originally. These things can take 15 or twenty minutes.

And if you have a question, please, post it here before you do something stupid
Seems like you were on the right path, but I would guess, you didn't give it enough time to complete. It happens sometimes.
Oh, I also forgot to mention, to Format your SD card on your PC. FAT32 before doing any of these things. This will be sure to remove any update files and such, before running procedures.
Thank you for the reply. The device is at home charging now. I know I will have some more questions later! Thanks again!
My gut reaction is maybe your refurb unit got a bad flash chip in it.
In particular the errors trying to format the cache and the freeze while loading.

Yeah, one would think that might be possible, but, due to the fact he/she ran the first update with no issues, I would probably rule that out.
Especially, if it were the "flash" chip, as you refer to. This would be the factory bootloader image. So I think we can rule that out.
Not sure what Acer has in mind for a threshhold, as far as successful updates. Maybe 85%. Maybe 90.
But the fact remains, when you run an OTA, it is not promised to be 100% successful. Probably why 30% of rooters and rommers switched from stock to a custom rom. Got tired of failed OTA's.
Regardless, confidence level is high that we can get this person back to a usable system.

Not a problem.
But after charging, I have to put the question to you. Is it still under warranty? If so, at this point, it is easier to return it for an exchange. If possible.
Or you can come to the dark side, and join the rest of us.
hello all, thanks again for the replies...reply's ? whatever...
anyway, I was offered a refund and can reorder...I think that's what I am going to do. I don't want to root this thing, and have them tell me that since I did attempt to root it they won't take it back.
I would much rather fix it, but I think I am going to take the more assured road. Sorry for wasting your time.
Don't worry, you didn't waste anybody's time.
It happens.
But the next time, don't take the OTA.
We'll walk you through the root process. And you won't get issues.
update for anyone that cares.
I was offered a refund from beach camera, where I bought the device and I am going to take it.
I was also told that if I would like I could re-purchase the device. Well, I got it from their Flee-Bay store for $250.00 and now they are all out.
I have ordered about $90.00 worth of accessories and LOVED the device for the short time I had it.
That being said, I can't see paying over the $280.00 range for this.
If any of you guys know of any sales, please let me know.
Thanks again!
I'm sending my a500 into acer to get the power button fixed and i have to revert it back to stock before I do. Is there any way of doing this automatically without using the recovery method and needing to select options with a power button. I tried using this EUUs_SBK_Acer_A500_1.016.05_COM_GEN1 from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113878 and it detected my custom rom but nothing showed up under new image version and wont let me continue.
any help??
btw I'm on honeycomb lightspeed 2.1 with honeyvillain 3.7 kernal right now.
My power button broke a few months back. I just popped it open and soldered it back onto the board and I used a glue gun to fill the gap behind the power button casing so it won't get pushed back anymore (I guess one too many hard pushes screwed mine up.) Haven't had problems with it since.
Hope this helps.

Just send it in to Acer. They probably won't even say anything about it. Especially it being a PWR button.
The thing about "if you root you lose warranty", is hogwash more or less. In your case, you can stand your ground as it's a physical defect.
I haven't heard a whole lot of stories from anybody who returned their device, even if it was rooted and such, and got a hard time from the service center. In fact, I have read cases where people got a replacement tab, and not only was it rooted, but already had a custom rom installed!!!!
Just send it in and don't worry about it. The thing is, with your older version of CWM, and not the touch version, you're pretty well up the creek. Unless you want to go the NVFlash way. Now that we can definately help you with. You should be able to NVFlash a stock recovery image. In fact, I believe the Acer Recovery Installer on the market, may be able to flash a stock recovery. Might want to check it and see if it will boot your tab to APX mode automatically. I haven';t used it before, as I prefer the old fashioned way (involves the PWR button)

That's great to hear. i wasn't sure how acer was about being rooted. i know with my sprint phone if the service guys wanted to be dicks they can black flag it and it will void the warranty on that phone entirely, and I've read cases of this happening to people. I'm just gonna do a factory reset and send it to acer. I'll update this thread when i get it back.
also, i did install the stock recovery and tried to flash a stock update.zip but every time I'd get the android guy with the exclamation point next to him, then it would reset (i think it's cause its from the wrong rom?). i had a real hard time finding a stock rom with a good DL link. almost everyone i tried from that link in my first post (and from google) had bad download links. i only got like 2 to actually download and neither worked. but it don't matter now cause I'm sending it in rooted anyway. thanks for the info.:highfive:

Yeah, some of the "update.zips" are a little ify-ify on whether they will work or not. One that works well is an EUU rom. But this requires you enter your UID number for it to continue (a good idea to copy yours down when you get the tab back). Of course it's for a a500, but will install on an a501 also. Usually we use this to reset partitions from a failed NVFlash.
Keep us posted. Sprint folks can be real peckerheads sometimes.
MD
*UPDATE*
So I got my tablet back from acer today. I sent it in rooted on a honeycomb lightspeed rom and I got the same a500 (I put a little mark on it) back on a stock 3.2.1 rom. So they don't really care about root as they still fixed the power button. Thanks for the heads up on that one Moscow Desire. It's funny cause my 1 year warranty would have ended on August 15, 15 days from now lol.

you know i really dislike recommending this but you may have to do a factory reset of the device :
1- Fully Turn off your Device
2- When is completely off : PRESS AND HOLD VOLUME UP + POWER till you see the Recovery Screen
3- With the volume buttons navigate to WIPE / FACTORY RESET and PRESS POWER Button.
4- Reset System.
hope that helps. good luck

understandable but believe it or not, sometimes after doing the first Factory Reset fixes a lot of current issues when you boot the device for first time or after OTA's or Big Update...
just give it a try and if still having issues just do what's best for you
I got no update yet.
I reset to factory defaults and cleaned the cache. Nothing happened.
Removed the SIM and the SD and did it again.
Still bootlooping.
I knew this phone is too good to be true.
Now I have to return it.
Talked to ZTE.
The phone cannot be replaced cause they dont have anything to replace it with.
You never had to return a Samsung or LG? I have.
Any phone you get can have its issues. I know your frustrated but just get a replacement or return it and move on.
You can ask for suggestions and try them but bashing the device because you possibly got a bad one doesn't help you at all. And it probably didn't make you feel any better either.

Probably bad emmc block and it can't recover from it. You would have to re-flash factory image to bypass it if corruption is in one of the critical partitions

I did have an issue with the note 5 and it was replaced at AT&T. But ZTE have no replacements.
Here is a snippet of the conversation.
Boris Ba: So if I do an RMA
Boris Ba: how long will it take?
John P.: The wait would be until we get in additional supplies which would 9/9.
Boris Ba: and ZTE thinks its a normal retail behavior?
John P.: It is not. The demand for the device has been greater than initially anticipated. This is definitely not the norm.
Boris Ba: This sucks. I will not buy this phone for the second time.
Boris Ba: And I need to spend energy to send the phone back.
John P.: I completely understand your decision given the circumstances.

Still bootlooping.
I knew this phone is too good to be true.
Now I have to return it.

Probably bad emmc block and it can't recover from it. You would have to re-flash factory image to bypass it if corruption is in one of the critical partitions

I was thinking the same thing. If ZTE would just release a full system image, software-related issues like these could be fixed by the end user by reflashing through recovery, no need to RMA...

Unfortunately we don't have such an image for the US model, only for China and Global(Eu) which is also a ZTA blunder considering they relesased BL unlock. Quite a few problems are solvable with it, but ZTE has not released one yet. Probably what drained their initial RMA stock, if they had proper one one to begin with.
Sorry to get your hopes up...
DrakenX is correct.
First thing I do when I get a new phone is a hard reset. This will insure you get a proper install of the OS compared to the OS being installed on a 100 phones at once all hooked to a data rack and drawling from the same image.
All phones are initially installed this way the same with proprietary crap computers like Dell, HP, Sony and all the rest. If there is any type of power glitch or lag in the data stream it can affect your original out of the box install. So in short ALWAYS hard reset a new phone for peace of mind.
