T-Mobile replacement for HTC g2 - G2 and Desire Z General

I have an HTC g2 that was working perfectly, until recently when the screen stopped turning on. The phone vibrates whenever I swipe any gestures on the screen so I'm assuming its just the screen that isn't working and not the digitizer. Any who, a friend of mine sent in their busted g2 to T-Mobile and got an HTC sensation as a replacement.. How did that happen? I still have insurance on my phone so I'm going to send it in lol. I was wondering if anyone else that has sent In Their g2 for replacement, if they have received a sensation or anything similar, or what is the correct substitute that T-Mobile will send me. Thanks.

My guess would be that your friend opted for an upgrade and maybe paid a difference. I don't know tmo's exact policy, but I thought it was to replace based on similar device, being a 4G QWERTY phone, of which maybe the myTouch series?

If you look in the treads here you'll find one on this. I guess tmobile is out of stock on g2s so they are offering other options

I had to send in my G2 a couple weeks ago because of water damage....well really it was more like vodka damage. Anyways, they mailed me back another G2 running on gingerbread. And it was much more difficult to root from gingerbread than froyo.

R.I.P to my N1

I was getting out of my car and dropped my phone on the floor and the screen cracked . I sent it to HTC and they said it would cost 288 to fix the phone.
I did alot of research on vibrant and some on the g2 i can renew my contract in October....witch phone would u guys pick and why?
Thats unfortunate. A gel case would have likely saved it.
Try looking online for just the screen if you have the know-how to replace it yourself.
well I have a n1 and a vibrant and I love my vibrant well better than my n1.
The g2 will be sweet and obviously come out the box with 2.2. Its a toss up id wait till its released though and check the bugs. I personally dont know if I can go from a samoled to TFT,,
Well one thing you might want to look into is call TMO and tell them you just bought a Nexus one and you want to put insurance on it. Wait a couple of weeks and then put a claim into. I purchased my Nexus One over criagslist and switched it to my insurance from my G1 with no questions. I haven't put in a claim for it ever but no questions asked applying it to insurance. So if it were to be crushed its covered.
Vibrant has great hardware but the updates and fixes keep getting pushed back, pretty sure the 2.2 update will be the last for the phone. I'd get the Desire Z or wait for the Desire HD that has better rom development.

shoulda had a case..... sad story!!
Yeah. Samsung has been good about NOT updating their phones...just because. Since you asked about the Vibrant and G2...go for the G2. Vanilla Android...most likely to get the most support...from the community here as well.

i agree. but the fact that the gps doesnt work pisses me off so much.
so i ended up returning my vibrant and am sticking with my n1 until they push a fix.
but ur so correct. going from samoled to even amoled feels so weird. the screen and the glass have such a large gap. the brightness is lower. the colors arent as great.
but its still better than tft/slcd

desire HD is coming to T-Mobile?
lol at the guy doing insurance fraud. Im thinking about g2 since i need flash for my cam and it reminds me o nexus in every way.
I'm assuming it landed on the screen? In which case a case would have not helped. Ha, I used case twice.
A simple question:
Does Vibrant equip flashlite?
If so, I may opt for it over G2 (Vibrant can be tethered out of the box). However, the forthcoming moto and LG Android phones will have mobile hotspot and softUMA out of the box.

I believe you have to apply for insurance within the first few weeks of activating your phone. At least that's what a tmo rep told me...

Ive had the insurance on my g1 and when I bought my Nexus I called up and asked if I could switch it to my Nexus One and they switched it.
I am not sure....I think I would go G2. But on a side note do you want to sell your N1? I just need a new motherboard as I broke a few resistors and now my screen shows black, pink, red, and blue only.
I'm "moderator" in an italian forum for N1.
In our forum an user had same problem and he FIXED BY HIMSELF...
if you want I can link you the procedure he used to buy the new screen and to istall it (but make attention: that's in italian lang...)
There are local places that replace the screen for $60-$100. Check craigslists or google search for your local area. Or, replace it yourself.
Actually replacing the screen is easy....really I broke the resistors doing something I knew I shouldn't (using a metal dental spatula to pry plastic parts). Honestly though once you get the plastic off which is not very hard the rest is quite easy.

G2 replacement

Hey guys I bought my g2 off craiglist and been using jt for about 4days. And I found a dead pixel........... so I'm trying to get a replacement. How can I get a replacement.what should I tell them?
I sent a mail to htc customer services but they are bullshitting me.
I can deal with the loose hinge but I can't deal with the dead pixel and screening being all wobbly when its closed.
And I just saw few posts saying that they have recevied g2 with stronger hinge? That it does not open when its upside down? Can anyone confirm this?
I'm not trying to be a crying baby, just expected a little bit more from htc 500 dollar phone.

Claiming warranty is a ***** when you conduct business via craigslist. With that said, your going to have to talk to HTC about it because there is a manufacturers warranty on the device regardless of owner. Instead of an e-mail where they just send you a bull**** auto response try calling them...
And I had to get a replacement G2 because my first one had a wobbly screen and the hinges were pathetic. The replacement was solid. But... A friend of mine got his replaced and though the screen didn't wobble anymore, the hinges had no strength at all!
Just say that it was a gift from a distant relative and you don't have a receipt.

I returned my G2 until my buyer's remorse because the trackpad wasn't working as it should and got a replacement G2.
The hinge is a lot sturdier than my old G2 was and no longer falls down under its weight when hung upside down. If I shake it when upside down, then it begins to fall. However, there is no reason as to why I would shake it, so I really see this as a problem for me

lol tmobile insurance is a joke. but i'm making him pay $200 to cancel one of my spare lines so i can give my GF one of the G2's that im selling. im hoping it doesn't come to that because i really don't want to do that. my guess is that i just need to replace the LCD. anyone care to chime in?
The impact could have damaged several internals. Without opening it up, you don't really know what you have to work with.

RE
i had a similar problem with my phone ... my screen went white with random black lines on it ... i might have sat with the phone in my pocket earlier not too sure ... anyways so the screen wouldn't show anything but the phone worked otherwise, i can hear it receiving notifications, and i can even receive phone calls and answer them if I slide my finger across the screen ... the phone was rooted, and i wasn't able to do a hard reset on it ...
took the phone back to bell on the 3rd, and last monday i heard back from them saying that the LCD was cracked and needed replacement ... which is not covered under the waranty since it's a physical damage and it would cost $150 CND to replace it ... should be getting the phone back this monday...
After replacing my Desire Z via FutureShop warranty (for battery issues) I somehow ended up with the lines on my screen Christmas eve, however the LCD was not cracked. The lines would move around and change in brightness as I did things on the phone (opening apps, flipping keyboard out, etc). If the lines don't move then it's more likely a crack in the screen. My issue was more likely a faulty ribbon/connection. I carry my phone in an inner breast pocket on my winter jacket, so I definitely didn't crush it or anything, either.
So back to FutureShop I went, only a week after the first replacement, and they gave me another new one right away. Between 2 stores that I have visited my 2 replacements are supposedly the only 2 replacements that have been done since the phone launched.
My 3rd one seems to be doing well, no battery issues, so far no screen issues.
I guess my point is, if you can get a phone from a retailer that offers a decent warranty, do it. I bought my phone outright at $500, the warranty was $10 a month.. I fell for it, but I'm very very glad that I did. Although HTC may have covered me, I would have been without the phone for a lot of time, and once they found out that I'd unlocked it they probably would have left me in the cold.

I had exactly the same, it is very very likely that "only" the LCD that is broken.
I got an replacement from from ebay (it's about 60 USD) and replaced it following IntuitiveNipples teardown guide at http://tjworld.net/blog/htc-desire-z-tear-down
Its' a little bit of fiddling but in the end not that complicated (tryin to remember which screws should go into which place was the hardest part)
Thanks for the input guys. Very much appreciate it. Looks like ill order the lcd when I get my next paycheck :O

I have this problem too, and eventually (like 2 or so mins in with the screen on) the screen gets dark areas in the corners. We're guessing it is screen damage (which is strange becuse the phone hasn't been dropped or anything, was just in my pocket). My question is what should I do - should I send it to HTC for an exchange or will I get issues with that because the phone is rooted, in which case should I just get a new screen and replace it?

If you are worried about sending it in, just unroot the phone and you will be fine.

I'd love to... but how do I unroot without a screen?
this is what the screen looks like now

Sent phone for repair, returned unrepaired..

I stared getting some screen issues.. I'd boot the phone and it would vibrate and make the booting noise but nothing would appear on screen. Once it fully booted if i pressed the lock button a few times the screen would come on but with everything inverted and distorted (wish I'd a picture). Explained this to htc support and I eventually posted my phone to them. (they couldn't collect it after 3 weeks of "computer system errors, so they eventually told me to post it to them because they're system wouldn't accept my address) So now, 2 weeks later I get my phone back, still the same firmware version on it (which was untouched stock, no root or s-off) with the exact same issue. I checked the software version and they didn't even flash a new update to it, it still had the original 2.2. The warranty wasn't void because the sheet they sent back with it said the phone had been repaired, but not what they had done.
Do I send it again? wait what could be another month? I'm not looking of sympathy, I just want to know if anyone else has had similar issues. After spending 500 euro on a phone I'd like it to work
Call them up and *****, their service needs to up to par or beyond if they want to be able to charge that much for a phone. Have them send you a new one, and then you send yours.

Wow lol chill. That was my personal opinion. With t-mobile you call them if you call htc they will just say talk to your carrier. You want me to reword my self? Well just put I suggest you call your carrier they might be able to send you a replacment phone. So don't start triping haha wow

yeah I'm in Ireland, I bought it off a website off contract. I emailed the website just there to see if they'll send me a replacement. bleh
and at this point I might just call htc and *****, already spent like 2 hours on the phone to them over the last few week I'm almost friends with them now...
Just off the phone with htc, apparently the tick sheet with the phone info lost some details along the way. The problem on one sheet was that it was constantly rebooting, and on the other on it was display issues. So instead of fixing the display they replaced the motherboard and sent it back... they're collecting it again monday...

[Q] Warranty Device Swap?

Has anyone been able to sucessfully swapped the bad screen phone for a good one with HTC?
I am asking because I have a bad screen one and I would like to do it.
Thank you in advance for the reply.
i seen a poll here the other day about this. some one posted up the percentages for getting a good screen back from HTC and T-mobile. both were pretty high. i got mine first MT4G march 11th with a good screen from radioshack.
shouldnt cost anything since your going through warranty so shouldnt hurt to atleast go ahead and try.
I swapped my wife's. Told them people couldn't hear me. They called me to see how clear it was.. I put a wad of toilet paper over the mic to muffle my voice. They next day aired me a new one. Was sweet.

Shouldn't be an issue to get a new screen/phone. It was a pretty popular issue that they were aware of.
Thank you all for your responses. I will definitely give it a shot today. How much difference can you notice from the bad and the good screen?
Had 2 with good screens sent to me

Just sent one directly to HTC (bought second hand) a week ago. It's already on the way back. I've complained about the screen visibility from the sides and in bright daylight, and attached a note with one of the screen comparison pics found on the net. I'll see what screen I get in a few days.
I spoke to T-mobile this weekend after I traded my G2 for what turned out to be a MT4G with a bad screen. Since I had insurance, they put the order through for me immediately, but unfortunately it hasn't shipped out yet. Won't get it till next week at this rate...
My original MT4G had a good screen, but a bad power button. The replacement I got at the store was another unit with a good screen, and the power button was different, so the guys at the store pulled a bunch of them out and tested them all. They all had good screens.
I think the likelihood of getting bad screens has gone down with the newer shipments. They all also seem to be made in China, while some of the older ones were made in Taiwan.
I called HTC and they said to send it in for "repair". That means that I could be without a phone for like 10 or more days. That sucks. Why cant they just replace it and thats it?
Anyway, I havent taken it to T-Mobile becuase I bought mine from Craigslist (new). So I am not sure what they would say. If they ask me for prove of purchase or something like that, I am out of luck.
Any suggestions?

add insurance to your account, and then say you dropped it and now the screen doesn't look right. don't say it came like that, because then they will tell you it's a warranty issue and not an insurance issue.

Call tmobile and make sure they have your ime #. Hang up then call back in a few days with the complaint. They are not going to ask you where u bought it, and if they do lie and say it was at a store
just wanted to add my 2 cents real quick...
for anyone that doesn't know when you swap your phone they send you a refurbished one to fulfill your warranty requirements.
normally refurbished phones sell for a 1/3 of the price as it was brand new so its pretty much like swapping out your $500 phone for a $150 phone...
just something to think about
