[Q] EC09 vs EC07 - Continuum General

Question for anybody who cares to comment.
I'm on EC07 still. I've been puttering along just fine with EC07...between TB and Pattielipp's mods, life is great and Miunia is greater.
So...are there any major feature differences between EC07 and EC09? I've heard stability cited as one of the reasons for moving up, but I get a force close maybe once every 2-3 days and it's really not that much of a nuisance all things considered. So other than that, has anybody noticed much of a difference between the two?

I think my phone is more responsive on EC09. I have heard other people say the same thing, too.

Yes I've heard that too. Are there any feature additions? Or it just seems to be speed/stability?

No new features that I know of, other than things like the stock launcher and browser, but who uses those?

The no bug thread

Well this is basically a pointless thread other than to say I've read about bugs people are experiencing and all the threads about it.
Well this is the no bug thread. I have zero issues and think this is the best stock rom I've tried (besides trackball wake) and honestly even better than every custom I've tried. This will only make the new custom roms better.
Anyways please don't post if ya have bugs. This is the I got not a single bug thread.
FROYO ROCKS, even this isn't the real final release ( even though I don't see final any different)..
Like yourself, I'm probably one of the lucky ones that has not had any issues with Froyo.
I can't really comment too much on reception, I've noticed that the bars tend of fluctuate a bit more now, but the overall signal seems to have gotten slightly stronger.
I conducted a full wipe before I installed Froyo, so maybe that's a contributing factor to our overall positive experience with Froyo opposed to those who may have simply installed Froyo over their previous ROM.
I also have no issues with froyo. I'm very pleased with it. I just hope I get an update to the official build since i'm not rooted.
none for me that I know of.
very, very complete wipe before install.
I'm extremely pleased with the wifi performance, it's very fast, connects no problem to my usual spots without the hassle. And the better sound on phone calls.
No bugs for me! I'm completely stock, coming from ERE27. I didn't even wipe.
I can easily say this is the fastest android I've ever experienced!
Yeah there may be bugs on some of you mugs... but there ain't no bugs on me. =)

Zero complaints here. It's solid and I am getting good battery life. If you want trackball wake, you can add the Market app "No lock". The display will sleep but will wake on any hardware button push - vol up/down/trackball. No unlock required.

I've had no bugs at all, except with apps and that has nothing to do with the build itself, I just can't wait for it to be a full Rom and themed with all of the goodies lol

I too have no bugs. I used the pre-rooted rom, running set cpu and a modded swype as well, no issues, I love this rom! I can't wait to see what cyanogen cooks up with this.
No problemo.
I have had no bugs either. Once there was a soft reset when I used an unstable hack to implement Apps2Sd, but that's all.

Review/Warning

I just bought an Atrix, and I thought I would post a little review because in all my research before I bought the phone, I did not find one which said what I needed to hear. Hopefully this is useful and objective.
I have owned a OG Droid, Samsung Fascinate, Nexus S, Galaxy S, and this Atrix so I feel like I have good grounds for comparison.
Out of the box...
The Good: The phone's hardware is top notch. The specs are awesome.
The Bad: The Motorola Atrix in completly stock form (the one I bought anyways) is very buggy and laggy. When I first unboxed it and was doing my initial set up and installing a few apps, a number of different programs forced close. The whole experience was slow and frustrating. I would rate Moto Blur as simply horrible and disgusting.
The fact that Motorola was able to take a tegra 2 powered phone with 1GB of DDR2 ram and make it run choppy is beyond me.
With that being said... If you don't know how to or do not plan on rooting, or modifying the software on your phone, I would highly recommended you avoid the Atrix.
If you are a fan of tinkering and modifying, then the Atrix is a great choice.
I have only noticed lag for the first 15-30 seconds after power on. None after that...
Motoblur means nothing to me, and doesn't really seem to slow down my phone. I had lunch with a bunch of other android users, and they were all impressed by the atrix' snappiness...
One thing I remembered when I had the atrix was unlocking the phone and using it was extremely laggy and slow for the first few seconds. I confirmed this with 2 other store demos. If you swipe your finger or do the pattern unlock, try bringing down the notification bar immediately. It'll be slow and choppy but if you wait a couple seconds and then try again, it'll be fine. Always annoyed me at how LONG it took to unlock the phone and get it going compared to every other android phone I've owned.
I have had no issues with performance at all on my device. It's lightning quick. The most impressive for me wasn't the CPU speed, but the file access speed. That thing installs, uninstalls, and loads applications retarded fast. They made a good choice of hardware right there.

The only lag I've noticed is for a few seconds after the initial boot up, which is understandable. To say it is very laggy and buggy is crazy. Perhaps the unit you had was defective.

Sounds like you may have a buggy device... Ive had three of them so far (one was replaced due to what I perceived to be a faulty battery and my wife also uses one). And I've not seen any of the lag you're talking about...
If it was a big enough occurance don't you think you would've read about it on these forums? This place is packed with android super users... no ones having problems like that ...

.... the fingerprint scanner makes it real quick to unlock the phone.... and it's not easy enough to be accidentally pocket-unlocked like some other unlocking systems i've seen.... such as i think HTC's, where you just slide the one thing down. Hell, with the one pair of shorts i have, i was actually able to see the screen on my iPhone 4 when i had it, and unlock it THROUGH THE SHORTS if i wanted to.
And i think it'd be expected for things to be going a tad slow as soon as it's woken up. Look at computers. Whether it's booting... sleeping... hibernating.... if you expect to be able to do something without any form of lag the second either of those are recovered from, you'd be sorely mistaken.

Sounds like a great comment from a non-Atrix user? Maybe I'm wrong though?
The Atrix is fine for people who like to tinker. The only thing we can't do is overclock our processors and change ROMs every 3 seconds. Other than that I have free tethering, no ads, root, no bloatware, free webtop thanks to a hack and a pseudo-ROM/theme loaded. Yeah too bad I can't tinker with it. *eyes rolling*

NICE!!!!!! glad someone finally said something... I mean sure u can't load cyanogen but with the way things are going with these "pseudo" roms if cyanogen put some effort into making one of those for the atrix would that not be a sufficient fix??? Because lets face it doubt the BL will be unlocked soo instead of putting all that effort I to unlocking it how about taking g advantage of the capabilities that we do have.... ???? Just sayen

i have an atrix, i guess we just have different opinions on tinkering...i do like the change roms often and be able to upgrade to the newest android version without having to wait for the manufacture. theres so much more you can do when you open up the kernel, most of the bugs that people are having would be solved if the devs can get at the kernel. Why do you think developers are leaving the Atrix? there's only so much you can do with a locked bootloader. i never said i hated the phone(i wouldnt of bought it if i did) i just dont think it's a good phone for modding but hopefully that will change...

same with mine.. the ATT version of the Atrix must be loaded with crapware making the phone slow down. My Bell version flies right out of the box, even when using Motoblur!

It's still in Beta at 7.2 now. However I believe the webtop that was removed in the previous version was the hack to make it work with just an HDMI cable so you don't need the dock to make it work. I am on 7.2 and I have the webtop hack installed and it works perfect on my TV through just the HDMI cable.
I am really enjoying the ATRIX. I was starting to get a little burnt out on installing new ROMS every couple days or weeks. This is however my first Android phone...coming from the WinMo forums...This phone is like night and day compared to my old Tilt 2.
People have such harsh and strong opinions on everything on forums. These 'reviews' should be read as objectively as possible.

Welcome Brother I'm in the same boat =P tilt 2 to atrix is an amazingly wonderful jump ~!
I came from a captivate where roms are readily available. I enjoyed flashing and it was awesome to see how a device can mature. But the kernel development is where things truly shine. But even after all the flashing I just felt like things didn't quite work right. I thought it was the fact that 99% of the roms were based off the international galaxy s.
I love my atrix. Everything works. The battery life is awesome. The phone really flies. Motoblur sucks but its been taken care of. As long as we get more roms ill be happy. Unlocked bootloader would be nice but I don't see it happening

[Q] What's the best way to move from 2.3.4 to 1.8.3?

I've got another Atrix on the way. There's a chance it will arrive with 2.3.4 already on it.
I've heard that 2.3.4 doesn't really add anything special over 1.8.3, but that it's slower due to the extra animations, and that for people who haven't updated yet, they're better off waiting for a Cyanogen release.
So, if the new phone comes with 2.3.4 to start with, what's the best way to revert back to 1.8.3 (with root)?
Is it to flash the 1.2.6 SBF, use GladRoot, then update to 1.8.3? Or just to use a 1.8.3 SBF and use gingerbreak? Or something else?
Who have you been talking to that says 4.1.83 is better???????????
I saw someone post that on this board, and I also know someone personally who updated and said there's no real discernable difference other then the animations and related performance drop.
If 1.8.3 (which is of course, really 2.2.2), is a bit snappier, and there's no visible difference, why wouldn't that be the better choice for now?

both your sources are incredibly inept and misinformed.
my phone performs better, has more crucial app compatibility (netflix, google talk video), and is overall much better then it ever was on 4.1.83. I doubt you'll find more than a few people who disagree with that.

Well, it's good to hear an alternate position. So, I've seen that there are quite a few threads about rooting and unlocking 2.3.4, and each one typically gives the impression that it's the best way to do it.
At the moment, what is the most reliable and recommended way of doing this?

My experience was much different. Gingerbread was significantly quicker, especially with Launcher Pro. Every performance test that I've run says Gingerbread improved performance by about 20%. The battery also lasts longer if you fix Moto's broken battery meter. Does your friend know you can turn off all animations? I don't know why anyone would want to go back to Froyo, but everyone has their own decisions to make. I just don't see many upsides at all.

You all have convinced me. The only question remaining is which method of rooting and unlocking the BL is the currently recommended one. Can you offer any insight here?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1182871
automatic unlocker, you might get a semi-hard brick, just don't worry and boot into fast boot and continue with the script's instructions.
The one I was looking at prior to all this was this one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1138204
The automatic bootloader you linked to is recommended over the above method nowadays?

[Q] What to do with my wife's MT4G?

So, she has a few issues with her phone. Overall she likes it, but it seems sluggish and also has some minor issues with it not ringing and other minor problems.
Now, I'd like to tweak it for her a little, to get a little better performance and reliability. I don't want to take her too far down the modding path, though.
What would you recommend? Is there an OTA update to GB forthcoming, should I maybe just wait for that?

performance under 4.2.1

It is early days, but has anyone noticed a change in overall performance after the 4.2.1 update?
This could be a placebo effect, but I'm certain that things are a little smoother, less lag, and there are certainly less freezes / forced restarts so far. I was getting at least 3 of these per day, and have had none since yesterday. It also seems to have cooled the screen colour temperature slightly more bluey and less yellowy.
If you would've googled the 4.2.1 change log you would know that there isn't anything that would improve what you think you are noticing. All that changed is December was added back into calander and some vibration fixes. There is nothing that would improve performance or anything you've mentioned.

I'll test on my N10 when the battery goes up, it may be the case that my low bat is affecting scores.

Oh yes! I work with the source. I answered your question. Its probably the smallest and most minor update from Google ever.
Call me crazy, naive, silly noob, but I'm definitely getting zippier, more buttery performance on stock takju 4.2.1 since I OTA'd this morning.
And honestly...if I'm enjoying it more, what else matters, right?
Well bring on the placebo effect, I reckon it's a little faster too. And my led notifications suddenly work now too, I had pretty much given up on them and concluded the hardware might be broken but was amazed when it started blinking after the 4.2.1 update!

Yep. Never said anythings wrong with the old placebo effect. In most cases it's better to have that than nothing. I was just stated the fact that I saw what exactly was changed and giving the proper information for it.
I got ~9000 on 4.2 on Antutu, and 13000+ on 4.2.1. Probably has more to do with the update to 3.0 though. The big increases were in 2D and 3D performance.
