last night my data useage went through the roof going through my data limit and running up another 250mb £29 in extra mobile charges in the uk before I could pull the sim to investigate . Got it on my data manager to see each app useage and still no idea but android system showing 25mb in less than an hour . Nothing unusual loaded except google currents but that has been on a week . Scanned with avg for viruses .Any body else noticed anything next step a wipe if cant solve .
If anybody else has the same problem check privacy and that backup my data is not ticked . Was uploading 50mb an hour to google servers wifi or mobile. Never noticed as most of the time was on wifi until away from home overnight with no wifi.
Google currents will rack you huge data usage as it continues to sync in background. You can disable image sync and enable sync thru wifi only.

Yeah, by default, Currents is set to WiFi sync only.
At first I thought google currents but was the backup in the privacy settings which was uploading, you cant specify 3g or wifi but good advice make sure google currents is on wi-fi only. Thanks for advice

Hi,
I have been using HD2 for a week now and I have noticed that the data connection with my mobile operator (O2 UK) starts automatically each time.
I notice this when I see the 3G or H or E symbol on top, then I have to go to data connection and switch it off.
If I call someone, hang the phone down and then lock it and if I unlock the phone after sometime I see the data connection turned on again.
Anyone know why this happens? Is there any way I can only turn it on when I want it and not all the time? I keep my wifi connected when I am at home.
As far as I know the apps I have are configured to not connect automatically...
metal675, couple of places to check. On your device, open activesync->menu->schedule and make sure the schedule for both peak and off peak times is set to manual. Next, go to the settings tab in manila and select location and untick HTC location service. Not sure if you've already done these or not, but these are the two things I know. Hope that helps.

Also deactivate everything in data services.
If deactivating everything wont help, please check if you closed Palringo properly (if you use it at all). Had the same problem and couldn`t figure it out - which process is turning 3G on itself. Found Palringo making problem. Closing by X doesn`t help (even when it`s not in ComManager). You have to close it by Menu>Exit to make sure.

You can also try deactivating data connections using bsbtweaks. It's an option which should prevent your device from automatically connecting whenever it pleases.
Thx all.
I think it was the location service which did the trick. I had missed that one.
Had switched off automatic update setting for all the other apps. Looks like it is working now and I dont see data connection being started now.
if your planning on using the data services alot then it might be worth getting the unlimited data/internet bolt on for £7.50 that way you dont have to worry about it, thats what i do. keeps me updated on twitter, facebook and handy for the weather as well
Thanks.
I already have the unlimited internet...but as you know its never unlimited.
Dont want my usage to be exhausted when I am not using the phone...I would rather prefer to use the internet when I need it for FB, twitter, weather etc
For some reason, my Gmail does not sync or push when I am on Wifi (all Roms I have tried so far)
Is this normal? Sync is fine when on 3g
go into settings>applications, find gmail and clear app data. that might help.
I didn't quite cover the issue...I can sync, but push doesn't seem to work right. Has been a problem on almost every version of gmail

is it doing the thing where you have the "3 unread" at the top of your app, but they don't show up as readable, or what?
are you rooted? backup, do a factory reset and set up gmail and see if the issue persists. if it does, then restore and try something else, if it fixes it, then just start over from scratch.
that's strange that gmail doesn't work right on wifi. it works fine for me. i'm thinking its either something with your profile, or your device specifically.
did you try clearing app data like i said in my last post?
This has been a problem with every rom I have tried - I am rooted. Never had this problem on my Droid. Push works fine on 3g, but does not work on WiFi unless I do a manual sync. Very strange. I have tried clearing the data, cache, and everything inbetween. I don't think it is a phone issue since all of my other data works fine on WiFi. Tried 2.2, 2.2.1, and even reverted back to 2.1, all have the problem. My wifi is set to never sleep, so that is not it. Also, I don't have any data settings turned off. Guess that Gmail just does not like WiFi
Been on WiFi all evening with no issues. The fact that it happens on multiple phones with multiple roms makes me think its something wrong with your gmail profile or something like that.
I'd say call VZW but they're gonna want you on an approved OS, so prolly wanna have that OTA froyo Rom handy before you call.

Looks like this is a problem for others as well...

I am going to see if the stock email program also suffers from this
Finally...fixed it
I wiped data and made a new gmail profile. Now my main profile is another gmail account. Then I added my normal gmail. All syncing properly. I spent about 2 hours combing through my gmail profiles on the computer and don't see anything. Oh well, working now

I've had a problem with pushing over institutional wifis, like guest wifis in hospitals and the like. Otherwise its been fine.

There is definately an issue with the institutional wifi...today I used wifi on the guest account at work and although my phone showed constant connection, I was able to see the phone get dropped continuously. It seems like these types of networks drop connections that are dormant for a short period of time

I'm living on WiFi only at my hotel since weds, its an institution access, so you have to refresh the connection about every 24 hours via a redirect to a confirmation page. No issues with any of my data, especially gmail. But good luck sending/receiving texts! There is literally no service in my room, and in the lobby I get 1X with no bars. It's brutal

So I just checked my account to see my data usage and I have used 230MB in just 8 days.
The strange thing is, I really haven't been using it much on the go except for exchange email.
Whenever I download apps I make sure the Wifi is on.
Has anyone else noticed this?
Have you checked any apps you've installed. Maybe one of them is using your data connection ALOT. Also, you can turn the data connection off (I think) Under "All Apps > Settings > Cellular > Data connection slider. I think that turns it off. You can also set the Phone updates to only use Wi-Fi. "Settings > Updates? > uncheck use data connection.
I didn't even think about that.
I uninstalled a weather app that I had (and rarely use actually).
I also unchecked the updated over cellular option.
It got me thinking and I looked through the other options and noticed "Feedback" was turned on and checked to use cellular data.
Thanks for the tips, hopefully that will stop the data monster.
data useage
I've had the same problem with data being UPLOADED to my carrier without my knowledge and I dont use email or messaging and have only downloaded thru marketplace when i am connect via WiFi. It's not the feedback option becasue I've had that turned off. Something is causing this on my HTC Surround. Spent some time with AT&T tech support and they don't know yet either. In a short amount of time 60 MB of data was uploaded for which I am charged. 99% of the time I am connected via WiFi. If you turn OFF data, located under settings/cellular, it will stop this from happening. You can leave data turned off and still use your Wifi. So DATA refers to info being sent or download thru your cellular network, not Wifi. The tech guy thought that maybe the data was being sent during brief periods when the Wifi connection dropped which is possible so leaving the DATA setting off will prevent that from happening. If anyone figures out which app is responsible please post here.
data useage 2
I just unchecked both options under updates too though I dont see how checking for phone updates could use so much data.
There are a few things that may use up so much data. Many applications, such as weather apps or news apps as mentioned, use a lot of data if left unchecked. Also, turn off the feedback option at the bottom of the settings menu, as that can send quite a bit of megabytes flying in the air, especially overnight. Bing maps, as well as the "find my phone" applications use data as well, and the severity of the uploads can be lessened if you turn it off or do not turn on the constant check....
Hi, i am having a problem with my nexus 4. i use wifi at home and i never use mobile data cause it is expensive so i turned off the mobile data in settings>more>mobile networks and when i am connected to wifi and when i open certain apps like maps, play store or facebook i see a location symbol in the notification bar for a sec and i get a message from my network provider that i am charged some amount for mobile data usage, the usage is between 1kb - 4kb always. i am losing a lot of money like this. i think when i open these apps they are using mobile network to get the location and that is what im being charged for, but since i turned off mobile data shouldnt these apps use wifi instead i have android 4.4.2 and i am only seeing this problem since 1 week no problem before. is anyone facing the same issue too.
Have you tried changing the default apn to something that is invalid or asking your provider to block data access?
You could try to turn on airplane mode

changing the mode in location settings to use gps solved this problem. thanks for your time.
Since the update to Lollipop last week, OS Services on my Nexus 4 has been using a really large amount of my mobile data (when I'm connected to mobile data).
I've tried the following actions but the it still consumes a large amount of data (about 150MB for 10 mins browsing):
Disabled auto backup
Cancelled auto synch of all my accounts
Cancelled auto upload of any photos / videos
Restricted background data
Any idea which OS Service could be using all this data?
Any help with this would be appreciated, its getting to the stage where I can't use any mobile data as I'm going to go over my usage limit.
Thanks,
os services

I have the same issue (since update on lollipop, before everything was normal), and I did these steps as well:
[*] Disabled auto backup
[*] Cancelled auto synch of all my accounts
[*] Cancelled auto upload of any photos / videos
[*] Restricted background data
1. It seems to me that it has something to do with gps, when it is turned on together with mobile data (yesterday I turn on gps and mobile data for only 4 (!!) minutes, in this time os services used 45mb data!!
(I'm using "my data manager", where I can see data usage per month / week / hour
for mobile and wifi data.)
2. Don't know if this is a coincidence, but it seems to me that os services is sucking more data on mobile Internet than on WiFi.
3. Everytime when I upload and download data or skyping, os services are sucking as well a great amount of data. (Like gdrive, downloading with cm browser, YouTube). With android 4.4.4 everything was normal.
Don't know what to do.. Because of this issue I can use Internet only on wifi, what is ridiculous, because of the wifi issue, which is only working by chance. Very bad combination :-/
