I've just tried upgrading to ICS and failed. Apparently I flashed the wrong kernel - should have flashed the CM7 one, but flashed the CM9.
Now my Defy is stuck on the Google logo and I don't know how to reach recovery mode. Pressing Power+voldown does nothing. Power+volup gives me the bootloader, which asks me to connect a usb cable, but I have no idea what to do after that.
I have two Nandroid backups: one stock (2.2) and another with CM7 (2.3.7). My Defy has a green lens.
Is there any way to restore my phone to one of those backups?
Thanks in advance
Do you still see the blue led for custom recovery?

Do not flash any sbf's. Reboot the phone, at the blue led press Vol- and when you get into boot menu, flash the correct kernel. If you flashed Defy build, flash CM7 (Froyo) kernel. If you flashed the Defy+ build, flash CM9 (Bingerbread) kernel.

I see the blue led, but it goes on to green regardless of what I do (power+voldown does nothing). I've tried to access recovery mode several times, but the phone doesn't respond. Maybe I'm doing something wrong.

I've read the guide, but my original SBF is missing ever since MegaUpload's demise. Is it possible to use the Nandroid backup instead?

Ok, apparently I wasn't pressing the button at the right time. Recovery mode is now working. However, I don't have the correct kernel in my SD card - only the wrong one.
My Nandroid backup seems not to be working too, apparently. I went into recovery and restored it, but boot still doesn't work. I wiped data/cache/dalvik cache and tried again, but it still didn't work. I'm at a loss here.
Should I try to flash some other sbf, since I can't find my phone's stock one?

I just tried installing the zip from the sdcard, but I got an error message: "Can't make /tmp/update_binary. Installation aborted". It seems that I can't install any zip now.
Is there any way out of that? I'd be more than happy if I could just flash my nandroid backup, even if that means being stuck without ICS for a bit more time.
I'm on ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.1.8, if that helps.

Hi,
I faced a similar issue but it was since I flashed CM9 for Defy in my Defy+ with 2.3.6(stock) ! Nothing was working and I would get some boot errors! I rectified it by flashing full SBF and then rooting. Well if you want I can provide you with the SBF I have but it is for 2.3.6 and so you will loose downgradability. I have 4.5.1-134-DFP-1321 - retail-asia full Blur multilanguage with me. However, you can also give Walter's fixed SBF and Nandroid backup a try
Thanks, it turns out that flashing a sbf was a nice way out of this mess. I flashed a 2.2.2 which is almost identical to my stock rom (couldn't find that one).
If I root my phone now, can I still try to restore my nandroid backup? Or should I just skip that and try flashing ICS again?
My SD card has the 03-19 CM9 Nightly, gapps and both CM9 and CM7 signed kernels. Should that suffice? CM7 kernel is the right one for green lens defy, right?

If you are on a green lensed Defy, then yes - flash CM7 signed kernel and one of the Froyo bulds of Quarx or Epsylon3 - try them all if you wish and see which one you like the most.
Procedure is easy:
1. Full wipe
2. Flash CM7 kernel
3. Flash ROM
4. Flash gapps
5. Full Wipe
6. Reboot
When you decide to try a new ROM, there is no need to flash the kernel again, just wipe, flash the new ROM and gapps and then wipe again.

Thanks, that's great. Are all regular Defy roms Froyo builds unless stated otherwise? I couldn't find that info on the files I have.
One question: by full wipe you mean data/cache/dalvik cache or is there anything else that I'm missing?

Yes, "Defy build" means Froyo kernel based, "Defy+ build" means GB kernel based.

I've just rooted my phone again, followed the steps and installed CM9. It worked like a charm. I was pleasantly surprised at how smoothly it runs, didn't expect that sort of quality from a Nightly. Awesome.
Thanks a lot for saving my phone, guys.

Sounds great Well since CM9 nightly is still a long way to go, you may want to dual boot CM7 and CM9. Install CM7 as primary and dual boot to CM9.

Did you flash the correct sbf?
How long are you stuck at the Motorola logo? Give a bit more information =P
It's most likely not bricked as it's almost impossible to brick the defy.. (I've never heard of it)

Red or Green Lens? Defy or Defy+?
If Red Lens then you can use Defy or Defy+ build straight from Froyo after installing 2nd init.
If Red Lens Defy with Defy+ build, you will need a battery fix
If Red Lens Defy with Defy build, nothing else needs to be installed
If Green Lens Defy, you can only use Defy build. Nothing else needs to be installed.
If Defy+ You can only use defy build, nothing else needs to be installed.

I believe that little android guy is the stock recovery. From what I remember you hold both volume buttons and it takes you into stock recovery.
Unfortunately, you will no longer have 2nd init installed, which allows for CWM recovery, so you can't flash a zip from there.
How long does it stay stuck on the blur logo? Maybe you're just not waiting long enough? (Stupid question I know, but some people complain after 2 minutes, the first boot can take a long time!)
Try looking at This thread and see if the link which is in this post will work to download the Taiwanese SBF. For me it doesn't seem to load
Edit: - Oh the Taiwanese SBF did eventually download. Took about 5 minutes with the tab open loading. I've uploaded it to my Dropbox so you can download from there... should be a bit faster!

Have you done Factory Reset????
1- turn off your phone (take the battery out and then put it back in)
2- press and HOLD the volume DOWN button + power button
3- Motorola logo appears first, then after a few seconds an 'android ROBOT logo' appears
4- press volume UP and DOWN buttons at once, quickly
5- from the menu choose 'factory reset/wipe-format data'
6- then do 'wipe cache'
7- then do a reboot
see if it helps and you are able to start the phone normally

Guys I have the same problem.
Phone was upgraded from Froyo to CM7 and took it fine. Played for a while in CM7 but decided to upgrade to CM10.
Followed the steps from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1795647
flashed foryo Kernel
Flashed CM10-20120924-NIGHTLY-mb525.zip
Flashed Google apps
Cleared cache, cleared Dalvik
Phone boots but gets stuck at Motorola logo and after blue and green light it loops back again to the same sequence.
It's a Defy with green lens and it had stock T-Mobile Froyo (rooted) before flash to CM7.
I'm now back to CM7 as CM10 didn't want to work.
sorry didnt get you

As per my understanding i believe your phone is working fine with CM7 installed and you want to install CM10 on your defy !!
am i correct !!
if you then let me make it clear that the latest CM10 build used a custom kernel made by quarx himself....it is not running a froyo or gb kernel...
so here is what you need to do....
1. simply factory reset your phone...clear cache and dalvik...
2. now flash the latest CM10 build
3. again...clear cache and dalvik...
4. and now let defy boot....first boot may take a longer time....
hope this works for u...if it does not...let me know...will b glad to help u...

Yes, you are correct. the phone is working fine with CM7.
Factory reset, you mean from boot menu or the hard factory reset with holding volume keys (procedure posted above in this thread)?
The first time I actually tried, I did flash of CM10 without the prior kernel flash and it didn't work either.
so do I need any kernel flash or do I just flash it with CM10 and it should work?
I'll try again later today or tomorrow.
Thanks

Lots of us who had bootloops trying to flash CM10 24/09 with a BL5 base SBF solved the problem by flashing a BL6 base Froyo SBF.
But try a factory reset and flashing your stock T-Mobile Froyo first.
If your stock doesn't flash properly then it means you have inadvertently flashed something which updated your BL version to BL5.
I flashed the JDGC_U6.2.13.0 SBF which is BL6 and then I was fine.
Don't use this ROM though, just use it as a stepping-stone to install CM10.

Unfortunately, you cannot flash 2ndinit if you've already installed cyanogenmod, since it already has a bootloader. Goes for all versions of CM. I made the same mistake and had to flash the sbf.
I'm assuming that when you reboot normally you get stuck at the "red M" screen and your capacitive touch buttons might flicker. If that's the case, you will have to flash the sbf, because your bravo is boot looping. Go to this post here and follow the tutorial to the letter.

It will run stock 2.2.1 yes. If you follow the instructions from the tutorial, and you have at least a little battery left you should be fine, since you will have your phone plugged into your computer. You will have to re-root as well. When you sbf, you have to start all over, including rooting. Just make sure you follow the tutorial step by step. It does a much better job explaining how to fix everything.

Maybe an hour to get you back to jelly bean. It's worth it to take your time before each step so you don't mess anything up.

To reboot into recovery, hold the power/hold button down til that menu pops up, then select reboot, then select recovery. It was my pleasure helping. If you have any other questions just ask in the bravo general section and eventuality someone will help. Everyone with bravo is very supportive.
Edit: in recovery you will have options like reboot, wipe cache, wipe data, flash zip, backup/restore, that sort of thing. Usually I backup first just as a precaution, before wiping data and cache and then flashing a new rom. For other zips like gapps, cpu governors, or anything else you can just flash the zip without wiping.

I'm gonna add, since the recovery option in the power button menu doesn't always access 2nd-init recovery (depends on the rom), nor is that option available in all roms, you just need to push the volume up button when the led light turns green when booting up to access the bootmenu. I've had cases where reboot menu recovery went to stock recovery instead of 2nd-init.
Its also a good idea to wipe cache\dalvik cache when flashing things like lockring mods, framework themes, and most theme related mods in general.

My fault, its Volume Down, and yes, the green blink before the blue is when you push it.
I got it confused with Stock Recovery, which is Power Button+Volume Up while turning on the phone.
Hey there, I've tried almost every method to boot up the new Quarx builds, but for me it's impossible to boot this ROM's on my Defy red lens.
I have pull out the battery, installed the fix for dead screens, flashed 2409 and then the 0610 kernel, but no result.
Also, I wasn't able to boot the last non 2nd-boot built, the 2409 CM10 Nightly so I'm using 1209.
The only thing that I haven't is flashing another .sbf, but RSDLite doesn't recognize my Defy and Windows also not, with the latest drivers of Motorola installed.
Please, if anyone knows how to help me, reply me as soon as you can.
Thanks in advance and sorry for my poor english.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1818520 try it with this zip, it worked for me. just erase all and flash latest build.

Thank you for replying so fast, but I have already tried that a couple of times before. Anyway, I'll try again.
More info about my problem: when I flash any of the 2nd-boot ROM's and boot into bootmenu and after that select again 2nd boot, the screen goes black, BUT the backlight of the buttons turns on. Does it mean anything ?
Thanks in advance

It's an MB525 Red lenses(Bayer). I don't know what kind of BL has, it comes from the official Froyo ROM of Vodafone Spain, and after that CM7,
So close..but I waited when the buttons were on for about an hour or something and nothing happened, should I be more patient?

if u wait longer ur battery run out of power! don't do this or u have to mcgyver it.
do the following
load the CM10 2nd boot new
load the new version 4 update
wipe ur device
install ROM + update
install Gapps ur want
restart phone, if u get red led longer than a minute, pull battery out for 5-10min and press power button when battery is removed.
put back the battery, and wait for the CM10 bootanimation.
if that not work ur bl is not compatible and u had to flash a higher one, it's known that some bl5 not work, u just had to flash a bl6 ROM. for the ROM just look at the thread were all roms in, there u can found ur bl version.

Ok, I'm gonna try it, but first, to ensure that I'm doing the steps right, I'm gonna ask you two things: With "wipe" you mean wipe data+cache+dalvik or with the defy_full_wipe.zip?
And till now, I have flashed the updates as a normal ROM, should I flash them as an update.zip ?
yes, it's an update.zip! just enter custom recovery and go to install zip.
and wiping with recovery is enought, i use the ultimate zip only if i get problems.

same problem, green lense
I have the same issues.
I have a green lens defy, was able to flash every nightly version until the 0924 version. So in other words, the last ROM that I was able to get booted was the 0912 quarx CM10 nightly.
I have looked in all the threads I could find, searched as much as I could, tried every technique, and still can't get past the black screen with the red LED.
I absolutely cannot get it to work no matter what I try. I've seriously read at least half a dozen people's instructions and nothing works. NOTHING! I have not tried starting from a stock sbf because I'm satisfied just barely enough using the 0912 nightly.
HELP!
Try to restore your Nandroid backup. If it does not work use RSDLite on a clean OS and reinstall root access,2ndinit and CM10.

it happens to me with win 7 ultimate that the driver I installed half year before was corrupt, pleas try reinstall.
it's really not often that a defy will not recognized on PC.
u can also try a Linux Live-CD to flash it from there. but I not know the tool for Linux, search on forum and u will find it

I restored my backup from a ICS version, but then I kind-of bricked my phone so I had to flash the stock Eclair .sbf.
I was playing with my very dumb phone at work, now I'm home I'll try to update to the latest CM10. Fingers crossed!
EDIT: I flashed the 1018 nightly - this time the boot logo was a silver M instead of the google logo I've been used to. AAAAAND it's still giving me a black screen + red LED. I flashed the sbf, rooted, installed 2nd init, and then flashed the 1018 nightly, the update, gapps with some cache/dalvik wiping before and after the nightly-update-gapps flash
I'm trying again using the custom zip files to wipe everything instead of using the recovery menu. Also this time I'm using the minimal gapps instead of the 1011 version
AAAAND it didn't work. black screen + red LED. I'm really looking for help here. Should I have not flashed straight from the froyo-updated stock sbf to the latest jb nightly?

I was getting the black screen + red LED too, but manage to get it to work.
1: I flashed 0924
2: Then wiped everything
3: Flashed the 1018 build.
4: Tried botting - red LED + black screen
5: Booted to recovery
6: In boot options, reselected 2nd boot.
7: Tried to boot - red LED + black screen
8: Removed the battery
9: Waited 5 mins (could be more)
10: Placed the battery back
11: Tried to boot - Success.
Most of this steps are not needed, but it is what made my Defy boot with the 2ndboot builds.

Yes, use BL6, latest CM10 2nd init rom and wipe data, cache, dalvik before installing, then use Stable Recovery to install zip from sdcard->18.10 ROM then install zip from sdcard->update v4 then install zip from sdcard->Gapps, reboot twice and it will work.

Hi folks!
I think I've messed up my workphone (Defy MB525) in some wierd way.
I had Cyanogen Mod 10 installed and should only do an update to another nightly, but by mistake I chose a cm7-file instead and flashed it. After that I got stuck in a bootloop, whatever ROM i tried to install or how I did :/
I then tried to reset the phone with an original SBF-file using RSD Lite 5.6. The sbf-file I am using is JRDNEM_U3_3.4.2_179-002_DEBLUR_SIGN_SIGNED_UCAJRDNEMARAB1B80AA03A.0R_PDS03C_USAJRDNFRYORTCEE_P016_A016_HWp3_Service1FF.sbf (found in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1828639 first post)
My intention fo flash the sbf-file was to restore the phone to its original state and from that point re-rooting it and after that install cm10 again.
But now to my problem, I just cant to do anything with the phone. The screen is all black and I cannot do anything :/
RSD Lite recognizes the phone and I can flash sbf-files to it. It goes to 100% progress but when it is supposed to boot up after flashing, it takes just a second or so...and RSD Lite then says "Passed" on result leaving me with the black screen yet again.
Only time I can see something on the screen is during the flashing. The sceen says "SW update In progress...". Other then that, always black:crying:
Really really stuck here and dont know what to do. If anyone has an idea and the time to help me, I would be in ever grateful!
Best regards,
/marmeladov

Flash Firmware 1, let the phone boot up and done.
If you want ROOT, enter to Motorola Recovery (Volume up + power, when the Android appears press Volume up + Volume down) then factory reset and wipe data, reboot phone on BL mode (Volume down + power) and flash Firmware 2.

Thanks, had some issues installing Quarx CM10. Never managed to get it up and running, might've been a kernel issue or something. The led just turns RED :/
On my Google Nexus CM10 was more smooth then 10.1, so I figured I'd better try CM10 on the defy due to weaker hardware. But I might have wrong there since I havent tried.
