this is the first time i'm trying to flash a custom rom. I can't seem to install cyanogen 7.1.0. I tried flashing the file named "update-cm-7.1.0-encore-signed.zip" using twrp recovery. But I get this error in recovery saying " installing update
assert failed: get prop "ro.product.device" =="
Error in E:temp/side load/package.zip (status 7)
And then I reboot to my stock Ics. My nexus s is running the matr1x kernel. Nexus s I9020.
Has this got any thing to do with the fact that my phone was running the stock ics prior to being rooted?

Fair enough, but I couldn't find an equally comprehensive guide with TWRP, and I'm not sure if TWRP automatically corrects for the "stock rom wants to overwrite recovery" issue.
His version is 6.0.0.6 (step 12).
You fail at tittles!!!! Nexus 7 could mean anything. Please no one help the OP till he fixes the tittle.

Had trouble copying link with xda app. This may be a little more mobile friendly.

rename it to update.zip and drop it in the root of your SD card, reboot to recovery and run the update..
Assuming you aren't rooted and using stock recovery..

Won't work since you're rooted. You're going to have to wait until someone patches it up to be CWM flashable.

downloaded zip, renamed to update.zip and moved to root of sdcard, reboot to "locked" recovery, and I get this...any ideas?

The update failed for me too for the same reason, and I returned to stock in order to get the JB update.
Goto the other post, download the zip and read the step by step directions they've posted. Personally I stayed on cm10 and used Odin for the modem update

I got this twice lately, flashing different ROMs. Does anyone know what Status 7 means? Thanks!

Something to do with your recovery I think. Do you have a custom recovery? If so try flashing a new recovery and then try again ?
Hi, I use the latest version of TWRP. What do you recommend, CWM?

You must disable "signature verification" if you want to flash ota update on any recovery but stock.
I see you have clockworkmod, so that's why it's failing. It might be in " advanced," Or "install zip from sdcard"
if not look through each menu till you find "toggle signature verification"

No, the error states that the build.prop isn't as expected, I.e. he's done some modifications and due to that the update fails.
-> he needs to flash the full update manually, probably leaving out the /data partition to keep the apps and their data or at least he needs to revert the build.prop modifications.

Will the upgrade work if I put the original build.prop file back in the system directory? If so can someone post a vanilla file so I can compare and then replace to try it?

If you didn't change anything else, it should work, otherwise you will stick at a different point. About the build.prop: Didn't you make a backup? Every time you modify something of the system, you should make a backup before. Unfortunately I don't have the original one, but probably you can extract it from the stock image.

Here's the build.prop from JRO03D https://www.dropbox.com/s/j5d396wnc8fqnc1/build.prop. If restoring that does not work, follow AndDiSa's advice and flash the full update manually except for /data.
Yep that fixed it. Think there's a crc type check done on the upgrade. Changed the res back to get the tablet ui and all is joyous in the world. Thanks for everyone's help.

TWRP works fine.. thanks..
One more quick question, if I install TARDIS mod patch, will it affect when I move to another kernel on the same ROM?
Kernel patches need to be re-applied each time you change the kernel.
