[Q] locked kernel vs. licensing - Defy Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just thinking... wouldn't this "thou shalt no change the kernel" policy break GPLv2 somehow?

Is There a 10 Point Multi-Touch Kernal for u8800 Running CyanogenMod 7.2.0?

I really want to use my piano app but my phone only supports 2 fingers at a time... Please help, is there a kernal compatible with my phone and ROM? Please tell me if you know.

The thread was locked a few months back.
As far as I remember, the user posting on xda never had the original devs permission to redistribute it.

I didn't mean regarding the thread, i meant about the kernel it self, did he continue developing?
I think that was the point, he wasn't the dev! He was merely translating from Italian to English and posting on the xda.
Might be wrong it was a good few months back

(Ask)Plan for making paid custom rom

Can we sell own custom rom?
Thanks
Sent from my GT-S5360 using xda app-developers app
Of course, but It would be pirated before u even sell 1 copy. How would u prevent copying?
Sent from my GT-S5360 using xda premium
Nope build on stock rom
Sent from my GT-S5360 using xda app-developers app
that's not the issue...android system is an open source project and licensed on apache. thus, no one may commercialize it without google permission. anyway, selling ROM is highly against XDA spirit . there a lot of FREE ROM out there. why should someone pay for it
You can't charge for a ROM on XDA, doing so would be immediate removal of the ROM and action that would reflect your account negatively. Thread closed.

Planning to port CyanogenMod 9 to the XPRT

I plan on undergoing this process. As the title says. I believe the XPRT deserves ICS. And I wish to prove it. Anyone interested in helping or following please let me know!
Whoa thanks man! I wish I could help, but I know nothing about these things. Good luck! I would love to see ICS on this thing!

Do keep in mind though that I'm only 17 and still in high school and very frequently busy. I don't have tons of time.
Sent from my MB612 using xda app-developers app
Also. I believe I shall first do CM7. This is my first rom port after all.

Count me in. Tell me what to do.

The first task I am currently facing is the kernel. I need to get it from the stock rom. It's the only kernel for this phone and it is needed to run anything.

If anyone wants to join in. I'm no pro and I'm currently suffering from serious allergies or something. Either way I feel like death. This link is a base of what I'm doing somewhat http://apcmag.com/port-roms-to-your-android-device.htm
And I was using a official CM7 7.2.0 rom for a droid x as the secondary. It doesn't seem like the hardest task in the world honestly. Rongsang I think you should take this up. You probably have the skills to do so.
Sent from my MB612 using xda app-developers app
Sure. i'll download the cm7 for droid x and look into it,
I've decided to port CM7.2 rom from Defy as it has similar hardware as XPRT and it was previously successfully ported to Droid Pro. But I'm still unable to boot. Need some help.
Why are you unable to boot?

You have the kernel right? You cannot mix two different kernels. It will only work one device. So since no one has developed a kernel for the xprt you have 2 choices. Build your own. Or extract it from the stock.

This...actually doesn't look hard to do at all.

It looks easier than it is. I'm still not able to make it boot. Its a bit harder with locked bootloader and 2nd-init. Can't seem to find a guide to port locked bootloaders with 2nd-init. Need somebody with experience to start off this project.

but the root out for the device specifically trips the knox anyway. so i'd assume users wanting to add roms wouldn't care?

That's what I would believe. The first warning in almost every forum is "Your warranty is now void".

I am afraid the tablet market is starting to splinter so much that there are fewer devs that own these devices, especially at this price point.
