Metallic sound from the speaker...

Hi guys.
I have a little audio problem with my Himalaya/i-mate/XDA II/MDA II/Qtek 2020 or whatever you like to call it.
The internal speaker seems to have a contact with something metallic or hard plastic. At the max earpiece volume, when calling, the ringing tone is distorted. When lowering the volume, it does not do this. It seems that, when the plastic membrane is moving, to reproduces the loud sound, it touches something hard and it distorts the sound. Does anyone have experienced this? I want to try to fix this. I paid hard won money for this marvellous device, and I do not want my experience to be ruined by bad audio.
Thanks for the help guys!
Not sure if its the same thing but when i played any sound it crakled a little. Did not bother me until the camera sound went on and off every 1 second. Did a hard reset and seemed ok until it happened again so i did another hardware reset went through all the programs i had instaled until it happened again. So i reset a third time without instaling that program(cant remember the name of it) but it works ok now.
I know what you mean Patrick..and if you hold your thumb over the earpiece it sounds a bit better, though of course muffled.
This is something that does bother me as I sometimes use the loudspeaker call option. Other phones don't have this problem in loudspeaker and it surprises me the II does this, as apart from a slightly rattly volume adjuster the build of my II is significantly better than the XDAI.
Just one of those things we have to put up with in order to have such an otherwise great piece of kit, though I'm equally surprised the manufacturers didn't notice it!
Anthony
Thanks a lot !
Yeah, your description and the thumb thing is exactly what I mean. I wonder if it's the speaker membrane itself or a contact with something? Maybe it could be fixed?
Thanks a lot guys!
It may be a warranty claim, you need full volume when using the speakerphone, get in touch with the service centre.
I have the same exact problem... The sound distorts if you have it set too loud.
I guess it's just the el cheapo speaker or poor design.
Hi guys, i have the same problem and its bugging me alot, any sugesstion or solution???? is it a hardware problem or did we install some software that case this? my XDAII still has warranty do you sugest me to go for service center or just live with this problem.
Thanks
Well Iam not saying its a good thing but Iam happy to see Iam not the only one experiencing this problem with the speaker although I dont own XDA II but XDA IIi or Qtek2020i whatever way you wanna call it. I also wondered if it is a harware problem couldn't we replace the speaker with a better quality one? In my case this jitter mettalic sound does not happen only in speaker mode but also in normal mode as long as the volume is set close to max or max.
My Qtek2020i has the metallic sound only when it's a large amount of humidity and very hot outside.
It seems that the speaker suffer a lot from humidity, it also happen when i keep it in my jeans pocket and i prespire a lot. After half an hour when it dries out, everything is ok.

What's inside the I-Mate - that would rattle....

I have an Imate & Orange M1000, when I use the M1000 in the car not a single rattle, but with the I-mate there is terrible rattles. The noise appears to come from inside the unit, after I've removed the battery.
Does anyone have any idea what maybe the problem, are there any disassembly photos guides etc that may help. Both devices work perfectly, I just cannot stand the imate rattling on long jormeys.
Cheers
There should be nothing rattling, the phone consists only of the main board really, why do you remove the battery, you say it rattles after you remove battery.
Maybe you have a Fly into your Xda2? lol
Just kidding guys.. 8)
Try removing the Stylus.
It causes ratteling sounds with my MDA II too.
But they are very quiet with my device, so I didn't do anything about it.
Hope this helps.
...
It's not that something rattles inside, instead something is rattling outside!
Try and hold the volume slider and shake your xda for a moment! The sound stopped for me though.
Is this what you've meant? What i've seen from pictures inside the xda there can't be anything loose.
You're both right (thank god).
Ever since my MDA fell, screen forward, naked, to the street i've been in denial. Didn't want to believe the rattle was from the drop.
It wasn't ! !
After the removal of the styles, it rattled less. After holding the volumeslider it was gone !
Thanks for saveing me
Hey,
glad we could provide a little help to you
But please tell us, what you are doing to prevent the stylus and the volumeslider from ratteling.
I think you're not holding the pen and the volumeslider while driving
...
I do nothing, it's not as loud in the car..
(as if it would ever be heard if i switch my car radio on)..
I just hear the rattleing if i shake the MDA...

yeah, like mine.
and I very rarely shake my MDA
Sorry, thought you were the original poster...
never mind...
Bye...
I seem to have located the source of the rattle if I squeeze the front & back around the speaker all is quiet. This would imply that the speaker or the SD socket maybe loose.
Is it pretty straight forward to remove the covers, are there any howto guides, picture by picture stuff?
Cheers

Yes it's pretty straight forward, just make sure you take the battery out and remove the screws there first. Then the plastic piece around the camera pops off there next. Under that piece are 2 more screws to take out before you can take the case apart. I don't have any pictures as of yet but I need to take mine apart again in the next day or so as I have a mic problem, and I will try to get pictures then.

Hi,
yes, there are pictures from someone disassembling the MDA II in this forum, just can't find where right now...
Maybe someone can point a way, or try searching.
Good Luck and keep us posted.

Of course there is a guide to the guts of the MDA2, I made it myself when I fixed my speaker problem (it didn't rattle, it just refused to work, however, the problem was fixed)...
Check it here.

Rear speaker - where can I get one

The rear speaker of my JAMin blew... I need a replacement so I can do the work myself and not have to send it over for a week to the lab. Where can I get one?

How to repair the sound issue on Prophet
Hi
I could read a lot of posts on that issue and found this solution:
Remove the battery cover. Then the camera cover: to do so, lift up the gently the cover starting from the side of the battery.
You will see something looking like a fan. This is the speaker. the problem is with the red wire whixh connect the speaker.
Turn on your prophet and run your favourite MP3 song.
then touch the red wire with your stylus. The sound should come back. Insert a piece of folded paper to keep the cable properly fixed. that's all
Watch out not to wish to fix it too nicely, you could damage the wire !
Hope this help, otherwise a return to the service department will be necessary !
Hope this helps
Regards

Hay the paper trick works!
I went here to learn how to remove the flap to the speakers:
http://www.modaco.com/index.php?showtopic=240109
Well, my speaker had the voice coil broken... touching the membrane would bring it back to life but that is no real solution. I replaced it with a speaker from a used old cellphone with some minor use of hot glue to fix it in place and seal around it.
It works now just as new.
Nir
yeah it is a real Problem.
mine is broken twice in 6 months.
tried the paper thing. but it sometimes sounds weird and there's some hissing. maybe I did it wrong. so I tweak it a bit and just lost it completely. no sound whatsoever now.
went to the service center today. they said that they have a new batch of speaker which supposed to be better than the previous one. if anyone can confirm.

That's great, this fixed my problem. After I touch the red wire with my stylus, the speaker just works fine, don't even need a folder paper.

I'll try this one myself - my speaker just died again - it's been back once already.
Well, I followed the instructions above and now I have a working speaker again. A very low tech fix to a high tech device.
I have found a small bit of sponge does the job better than folded paper.
what is the type of speaker.
i mean can i use any speaker?
what's the best?
Mohammad, you seem to have missed the point of the replies in this thread. We don't know where to get another speaker from but we do know how to make the existing one work again.
oh, dude!!!
sorry
What a piece of ugly Speaker: O2 xda Neo!
Hay Guys,
I am suffering from this nasty problem since sometime. My brother has tweaked the speakers with a metal piece seem to work. However if I use speakerphone, it goes off.
Is there a permanent solution to this constant spurce of unhappiness.
Incidently I have been blessed with a on & off camera problem as well. I think I will never buy a DOPOD product in my life again.
My Camera has those colour matrix instead of proper images. Occasionally it behaves normally. I have tried hard reset already.
Any body? help !!!!!

I wedged in a piece of foam. That's worked a treat.
The manufaturing quality of HTC is bad
I also have the speaker problem. And thanks for all of you to suggest that sponge and folder trick. I did it and i have put a small slice of ear plug sponge. For past 2 days my spearker is working. But dont know how long will this sponge give my speaker lifesupport. I am sure after few days again its going to be problem. Hey,...... is there anyone in this thread who has used sponge/paper and the speaker is working for long time.. at least a year ?.
These HTC products seem really bad quality products.
that worked

motorola l7 speaker is too a candidate
It's too bad they saved on the speaker. Guess the manufacturer of the speaker had a very nice presentation @ HTC
Trying to download that pdf file, but it's not working :/ However I've read on other occasions that people talk about that motorola speaker as a replacement. Might be worth giving a more detailed look into that.
What exactly is the problem with the speaker btw? Did anyone narrowed that down already? Why is the speaker not functioning properly?
pdf
The file contains instructions to change the original speaker using the spk of a motorola v525.
I did it yesterday, and works fine, but isn´t easy to do it

Noise Problem

Hey guys!
I just bought a second-hand Xda Atom and I'm having a bit of problem with it.
When I turn it on the device makes some kind of noise and seems to be comming from the screen.
You can't really hear it properly from far away but when you approach the screen it get louder.
I was just wondering if this is normal or does this mean that my device is faulty?
Cheers
The Atom should be silent aside from whatever sound effects you're playing through the speakers. That unit is suspect of damage.
o2 Atom High Pitch Screen Sound
Hello everyone.. for those of you who have that problem.. heres what i figured out... when i turn my atom on after i put it in my pocket i noticed that there is moisture inside the screen... as it turns out after reading a lot of posts.. its not water.. its some type of oil leak........ and when it twist the atoms body it separates the touchscreen and the screen but it causes the screen to have this loud pitch noise! :S so if i let the oil leak from inside of the screen it wont make the high pitch noise... i plan to open the atom this weekend and try to take the oil out and maybe clean the insides... maybe that will fix the damn high pitch noise and get rid of that oil stain inside my screen!.... sooo frustrated with this phone! even though i love having one.... i guess in the end.. its worth it....
My advice is to send the Atom to the O2 service center if its still under warranty and telling them of the problem. Its a hardware problem and I have to sent mine in 4 times before it got fixed - wasted about 6 months. They finally found the caused - the touch screen sensor was placed too close to the LCD!!!

Possible solution to speaker problem

Hi, Im a pretty new Prophet owner, and i've been flashing some roms from here. Thanks for all the great roms, it's really nice you guys are willing to share your hard work here.
I myself got the speaker problem, and tried both the audio jack solution and many others. Today i finally solved it, and its working, if not great, then fine
I took of the antenna plate, (pic here) and cut a strip of paper, which i folded several times and put it under the bar that goes across the speaker, thous putting a little pressure on the speaker, and i got sound again !!
Hope this can help somebody with the same problem as me

to see the picture I need to register to the link picture forum. Could u please copy the picture to this forum
Sure
Here you go
I used a piece of cotton, creates a better baffle. The prophet is the best piece crap ever.
This solution works for my prophet as well but am still confused does that mean that its a hardware problem and not software related? even after doing this step my phone will still lose sound when playing music or videos so I would just use the ear phones instead
