I am running into an issue that is specific to the thread subject. I *think* I know what the problem is, but I'm not sure how to get a solution out of this. To start off with, Internet Sharing is working fine when I tether my phone to my laptop with a USB cable. Furthermore, I can even connect to our Cisco VPN 3000 concentrator just fine from my laptop using the Cisco VPN client (5.0.00.0340). This is from a Windows XP SP2 machine. While connected with the VPN client, I can do anything on the Internet like normal with Internet Sharing. However, what I cannot do is interact with anything on our office LAN--whether via hostname or IP.
I think this is because of issues with subnets. Our office subnet is 192.168.0.0/24. This is the same subnet that Internet Sharing gives my laptop an IP from, but it's not the one from our office LAN (obviously... since I get this before I fire up the VPN connection). As a result, I think it creates a conflict with routing and my laptop doesn't know how to talk to anything in the office. Is there a way to make Internet Sharing give me a different IP from a different subnet? ie: 192.168.1.0/24? I assume this is the answer to my problem. So far I haven't figured out how to get Internet Sharing to use another subnet when giving out an IP to my laptop.
Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated in this matter. So far I haven't found the answer while searching this forum, but I'll continue to search in case I'm looking for the wrong things. Thanks.
Go figure... my luck seems to always be that I post a question and find my answer right after I post. This post had the information I needed. It was throwing me off because my IP entry for that adapter was empty, but the subnet mask wasn't. Apparently it defaults to 192.168.0.0/24 if you enter nothing there. After I manually entered in an IP, access to our office LAN is possible when connected with our VPN client. Hopefully this might help someone else in the future.
Not sure if I should post this question here or somewhere else but since I am using my TMOUS HD2 for remote desktop I decide to put this here.
I tried the remote desktop over my own wifi it works great but just wondering if I can use it over 3G... I tried but doesn't seem to be connecting.
Also does anybody know the list of ports that are blocked on tmous 3g? Thanks a lot!
over 3g don't forget you need to use your external ip address, (I.e not the 192.168.... addresses) and then in the router you need to set up port forwarding from the router to your chosen pc.

Assuming you have a router, then you need to set up port forwarding from the router to your internal pc, port 3389 TCP.
On the PC, system properties - remote - make sure you choose the middle option.. ' allow connections from computers running any version..'
Then on the phone, you need the data connection active before you start remote desktop, it wont start it itself.
With data connection active, run remote desktop
give it your routers external IP address (not the 192.xxx.xxx.xxx address, , thats your internal address)
no need to fill in user and pass, it will give you the PC's login screen. Domain left blank too.
Note the connection in teh top bar, , edge in one, H in the other. No wifi.
EDIT - if your carrier blocks port 3389 which some apparently do, bypass it by using a different external port.
So in the routersettings you would forward port, say, 3456 external to 3389 internal, and then in remote desktop on the phone, you would put the ip address as (example) 64.38.226.18:3456

Ugh, I just can't get it. I have data connected at all times. I try this, but I use windows XP (which for some reason almost everyone who shows how to use this on the HD2 uses Windows 7). Port forward to my internal IP address. Set up to connect to my external IP address (yeah im on a network). Always gives me those 3 reasons why it can't connect and I never got it to work. I just dont get it.
what i changed from stock rom to get RDP to work
in settings/connection change your data access point from whatever it is currently (write it down) to wap.voicestream.com and try (for me that also worked for skyfire). some ports/protocalls may be blocked from the default access piont.

Works fine for me all the time. I have XP Pro.
I've set the IP on my computer to be static (192.168.1.199).
I changed my Remote desktop listening port to 3399 (changes in registry and windows firewall. Also change in Antivirus firewall if you have one.)
I have a linksys router. I've set the port forwarding in "Games and Applications" as all requests to port 3399 will be sent to 192.168.1.199.
I open Remote Desktop on my HD2 and point to my external IP address with the port number.
example: 24.123.456.789:3399
Its been working fine for me for a month. Speed is good too.

remote desktop isnt included in home. (Maybe in home premium, possibly)
there are work arounds, a 3rd party vpn for instance, or there are ways to get remote desktop onto certain home versions.

I use this with Win7 Home Premium, which does not have RDC enabled. However, you can simply patch it to enable RDC:

I have no problem RDC to that machine from my HD2 from both in and outside of my network. As mentioned, you need to edit your router settings to enable port forwarding to the machine(s) you are trying to access remotely. I use 3389. The above utility that enables RDC on W7HP also enables port 3389 to get through windows firewall on that machine.
no, still can't get it to work right. Even with Remote VNC workarounds it's still not getting the connection. For some reason, any port checker (even when I configure the router to forward the port to my internal IP) says that the connection is refused. So I dunno wtf it is. I'm guessing either it's Comcast that's blocking this port or the router's messing up, or Tmobile is messing up, but damn it's aggravating as hell finding a solution.

Try connecting to your home computer from another computer outside. Seems to me that your home computer is not setup to allow RD from outside.

Yes, and phenomenon you should really try to establish the connection first while connected to your home network with your phone, just to make sure everything internal is setup properly before you start messing with getting the external connection to work.

Your router probably has it's own firewall. Can you connect to your computer through your own network?
I setup splash top for my home network but I need help getting splashtop to work on other networks when I am not at home. Any ideas?
Does anyone have any ideas how to get this to work?
If you got to there website they have instructions on how to set it up for outside networks. It involves setting up port forwarding on your router and getting the main ip address for you internet connection.

I have already followed these directions and still get a failed connection. I can connect fine with home network just not a remote network. Also a little info windows 7 with mcafee virus scanner and firewall. I also have a linksys e1000 router. Anybody know why I cant connect?
You may have already done this, but I needed to setup the entire range of ports (6783 thru 6785) to get mine to work. One mapping per port.

You will to add port forwarding rule on your router. Add 6783-6785 for the port. Make sure the splash top software on your pc under network setting is set to 6783. When you add the ip address you need to add your WAN ip address not your machine ip address. Mac address will need to be that machine youre trying to log into. I have splash top setup to three of my computers at home. Able to access them without no issues from outside of my network. If you are still having issues try to disable your mcafee software and firewall. I have all three on Windows 7 all with firewall enable.

Dunno about McAfee, but the firewall shouldn't be causing any issues as long as you allow splashtop connection. I set up separate port forwarding for each one. TCP Any -> ****. Did that three times and it connected.

Some you saing port forward each port as in 6873 to 6873, 6874 to 6874, and 6875 to 6875? Do you have a linksys router?
Router model / make won't make a difference to what ports need to be forward, just how you actually go about doing it.
Well I guess I will try to open them individually.

I did "Any to 6873" and etc. Just changed the destination port number for each one since "6873 to 6873" didn't work for me.
Are you guys able to connect to your pc from an outside network with the splashtop thats included in the mycloud or did you purchase it from the market?
I have port forwarding set up, added the pc and WAN ip (not local network ip), enabled "internet discovery" in experimental features on splashtop streamer on my pc and its still not working. I have no options to add mac address, just name, ip, password and port.
Splashtop is now $0.99 so i may just go ahead an buy it so i can use it on my other devices as well if the built in one doesn't support this.
Mine works well...after I set the ports to forward.
However someone did warn me about doing this and lack of security...

Yes, I am able to connect from outside of my network. I am using the one that came with the TF. I believe the one that comes with the TF has a custom resolution of 1280x800 just for the TF. Where the one in the Market Place highest resolution is 1024 x 768. I tried both and the TF version looks much better. There is a area when you have to input the mac address for that machine. My port for one of my pc is "6873-6785"

Thanks for that info. Do you remember where you put the mac address because i don't see it when attempting to add a new computer.

Nvm its working, maybe PC was off when I attempted to connect earlier from outside my house. Didn't need to put in Mac address afterall. Just wan IP and password I set and forward the ports.

Cool glad you got it working. Now, I remember its not the mac address its the Wan address. The most important thing is the listening port 6783,6784, etc,etc,, depend on how many pcs you want to access.

I was reading about Wifi transfer (good app) and I've used it on my home network to transfer files to and from the TF...it works great.
Today I read an article about how to do that across the internet using port forwarding.
My question is: what do you use port forwarding for? Give me some ideas as to why i'd go to the trouble to access my home router and do this?

Port forwarding is done to tell the router which internal IP address to map an external request for a certain port to. For example if you have an FTP server at home you would typically access it internally via its internal IP address on port 21 by default. If you wanted to access it outside of your network you would need to set up a port forward rule, which tells the router which device IP address to redirect the external request to. Otherwise the request gets stuck in the middle and you'll get a timeout. This is because you only have one external IP address but multiple internal devices with different internal IP addresses that sit behind it.
Try www.portforwarding.com. There are instructions on ho to do it urself.

How do you do this? I have just been reading up on this and apparently it is very easy to get hacked or for someone to see what you are doing when you are connected to a hotel connection. I am going on vacation in about a month and plan on using my laptop on the hotel network. From the research I have done it seems like a VPN is my best bet? Anyone know about this stuff? I just don't want my passwords and credit card info getting swiped.
Use OpenVPN and tunnel all of your laptop's traffic to a secure remote location, or better yet, to a computer at your own home that has the OpenVPN server setup properly.
This will make it very difficult for anyone to see what you are doing.
Or, tether your phone's internet if that is a possibility for you and then use OpenVPN on your phone's tether if you're still worried.

If you're running Windows you can make your Windows computer a VPN server really easily. Here's how.
Windows XP

Then you need to go into your router and forward port 1723 for VPN traffic to the computer you just set up this VPN server on. Do a search on the brand name of your router plus 'incoming vpn port forward'

Of course if you're on a Mac I can't help you there lol, I'm not a Mac guy.
Last up, if you're at a hotel, VPN connections don't always work coming out of a hotel due to cheap/crappy setups. To PoisonWolf's point, having tethering on your phone is always a great backup in case the hotel's Internet access isn't good.
