Can anyone here using any 2.6.35 based ROM or kernel post their dmesg and/or logcat made WHILE adjusting their display's brightness? I'm trying to isolate something but my time is too limited to switch back and forth between different ROMs.
*on second though I'm not sure whether this should be here or the Q/A section...I'm sure this is NOT for the dev section though... :/
This is cm9 reloaded with 2.6.35.7:
I turned the brightness up, hit ok, then turned the brightness back down.

Can you repost? Seems it failed to upload. Also, do you have dmesg as well? It would do well to have both.
Perhaps I'm missing something but I can't get logcat, dmesg, or kmsg for that matter, to provide any kind of result when changing the brightness.

Here are the two logs from a stock 6.3 KF. I toggled the brightness back and forth when taking the logcat. Did I do the dmesg right? I just entered:
Code:
adb shell dmesg > dmesg.txt
after selecting a few different brightness settings. If not let me know, and I can do it again.

Thanks! Unfortunately, it seems stock doesn't give a clue about the changing of brightness settings. Maybe a custom ROM with 2.6.35? Anyways, I'll just update the OP with the new request. Thanks again!
doh, forgot about dmesg. I'll get it to you tonight when I get off work.

Also reupload the logcat since it seems it wasn't saved.
Ok, here we go. Hopefully this works.
I changed brightness four times, twice by tapping the brightness bar at different points, and two by sliding the bar. Didn't know if it'd make a difference.

Seems there's still no clue about the brightness. Anyways, thanks for the help! I'll just have to trace everything.

I installed the froyo beta, and ever since then, my phone won't auto rotate anymore. Ive already ODINed back to stock, it still wont work Any ideas or help?
-Edit-
I downloaded Accelerometer Test to make sure that the accelerometer wasn't busted. It's working fine. The phone just will not rotate.
Only two things I can think of:
1: Go to settings > Sound and Display > Make sure Orientation is checked.
2: (If using Launcher Pro). Menu button while on homescreen > Preferences > Behavior Settings > make sure Enable Auto-rotation is checked.
Other than that, no idea :\

On stock, the homescreens wont rotate unless the keyboard is slid out.
Is it rotating on the browser and on pictures?

No. And if i slide the keyboard out, it rotates. But then it gets stuck in landscape unless i go to something that forces portrait mode, such as the home screen.

Ah if its even getting stuck in landscape mode than its got to be something framework or .apk related.
Beats me, sorry man :\ Hope someone is able to help you more so than I could.

3. Follow the onscreen directions, while making sure you device is flat.
pay attention to the bump at bottom on back.
I hung said bump off the edge of table
I preformed this AFTER flashing to stock and then flashing my former ROM.

THANK YOU! I had the same problem and this fixed it. Of course, i had to root my shizzle again. By chance did anyone with this problem run the Froyo 2.2 built-in calibration before this came about?
Oh wow, thank you so much!! The fix using the terminal emulator totally worked for me too, I thought I was going to have to go back to stock to see if it would fix itself! After running the lines in the terminal, it still wouldn't automatically detect orientation, so went to the display settings, unchecked orientation, and checked it again, and now works perfectly! The lack of orientation was so frustrating, especially after using the keyboard and the only way to fix it was turning off the screen... thanks again!

Just wanted to bump this. I had issues with auto rotation broken after going to DK28 and downgrading back to DI18.
I didn't test if it fixed it or not, however it did remove the annoying lag on DK28 when the screen rotates. Only reason I was downgrading

I noticed that it was working though I didn't find the open under the settings, but after I changed the brightness settings, seems like it doesn't anymore!!
Is SE hidden "Auto" under the carpet?
Dont be silly, the setting is right there... oh... actually, where has it gone?
Hmmm... cant find it in settings, sure it was there before. Try widgetsoid, that has an auto brightness toggle which works fine.

Are you guys are serious or just try to be
Ever since X10 was upgraded to 2.1, they took away the "auto brightness" from it. It used to be there when it was 1.6. Now I don't find that option in Arc as well, which is kind of weired. If you guys found it ... then I don't have any words to say!!

not being sarcastic mate..
when i got the arc I really remember seeing the option and testing it out...
since I never use it I really havent gone to the display settings (just use a widget to control brightness)..
after I read this post I went to chk it and it wasnt there...funny!

Honestly, I'm not trying to be funny here, but my Arc is only couple of days old and since I bought I didn't find this option at all. This particularly bothers me when I go out the brightness is too dark to read and I've to adjust it and then I come inside the shade, it's too dark
Honestly i swear there was one there - there was a checkbox on the slider popup. There was a software update about a week after i got mine, maybe they removed it in that.
I also remember reading something about it *always* being on regardless, and all the slider does in settings is set a general level it will change around, i.e. a 'gain' setting. Maybe that's what's changed in the update, and why they removed the checkbox. However, that doesnt explain why it doesnt seem to be working for you.
Regardless, auto-brightness still works on mine if i enable it via widgetsoid (or any other extended controls widget will probably do it). I can put my thumb over the sensor and the screen will darken etc.
it's always on apparently. i've tested it by passing the light sensor part of the phone over a ray of light coming from the window and you can see the brightness change. the light sensor refreshes every 3-5 secs or so.

I tested with the application you have recommended and setting it to auto seems like doing the job but it wasn't the case with some other widgets I tried. I don't quite understand why SE has to remove that check box. They did it for X10 when they upgraded from v1.6 to v2.1 and they seems like done it for Arc as well with smaller firmware update. But thanks anyway the application.
By-the-way are you using the same firmware version as mine or is it different?

I tried all methods from this thread and my auto brightness was not working until I put Power control Wideget (the one originally installed with system). One settings of its most right button activated auto brightness. Now it is nice to have it working.

I'm not sure what happened there, it works for me with widgetsoid without any issues! But I did face issues with few other widgets like Switchpro widgets or Extended Controls.
I don't think the Xperia Arc has auto brightness setting for the display. I looked at the power control widget, and the brightness control button does not have the 'A' state.

Have you tried the widget suggested? It has that "A" option you mentioned.
At the left side of the speaker for phoning theres this 5mm dot like thing. When I put my thumb on it, the brightness changes drastically. It probably thinks that Im in a dark room. When I release my thumb it goes back to normal. I notice this a lot since I put my left thumb there while watching movies.
Sooo ... auto brightness worked for me out of the box.
(I love the screen in direct sunlight ! On my mums milestone (droid) you can basically see nothing !)

Bought mine a month ago and one of the first things i did was adjusting display brightness. There was no auto brightness option and still isn't, 100% sure (.181). But it's working fine so i have no problem with it.

I just rooted my nook with Nook Manager, everything worked fine at first but now I can no longer enter 'Settings' in the upper right hand corner.
The page turns black when I click the settings icon and then returns to the home screen.
Anyone who knows how to solve this?
Thanks!
Something is crashing.
Post a logcat of the significant part.
I'm not familiar with that settings mod.
I use that area for toggle WiFi.

Regarding the settings icon. The icon came in the upper right corner after I rooted the nook with nook manager. In other words on the first page before entering the apps section or favorites or any of that.

logcat is the Android subsystem debug log output.
dmesg is the underlying Linux system debug log output.
Either can be viewed by running an ADB shell and typing dmesg or logcat.
Check the XDA Wiki
Ok. This is a little too advanced for me at the moment.
I tried to re root my nook but that did not help. Is there any other way to get around this?
FWIW, I FOUGHT WITH THIS FOR A WEEK AND GOT NO WHERE. THE TASKER PROFILE LISTED IN THE REDDIT THREAD BELOW WORKS GREAT ON MY ROOTED PHONE. ALSO, LIGHTFLOW WORKED ON MY ROOTED PHONE. SO I AM JUST GOING TO ASSUME THIS REQUIRES ROOT
So, i have been searching and reading and asking around and I STILL cannot get the power button LED to light up with notifications.
I have lightflow installed
I have the notification and accessability settings turned on for the app
I have back button led 1 and 2 turned on
I have them turned to "always" on for notifications (I dont expect it to pulse)
I have the brightness set at 255 (But i have tried all other numbers in between)
I am NOT rooted
I am on stock 4.4.2
all other LED notifications seem to be working just fine and are the colors/speeds I set them to.
anyone able to get it working? not sure what else I can try to get it working.
if you have it working on stock rooted 4.4.2 let me know what options you have checked and unchecked in the "settings" page.
guess I'm the only one with this problem eh? lol
I didn't think it did light up. Only time mine does is when unlocking the screen.

Haha, on AOSP ROMs I used tasker to run a script that changed the values in the file that controlled the 2 back LEDs to 255 when I got a notification. Then it cleared the file, and so on until I turned the screen on.
I don't remember it exactly, and I'm pretty sure it would need root.

interesting, I poked around for a bit in tasker and didn't see anything in there for the back buttons. if you happen to come across this, or remember it, please let me know.
edit: i found the profile on Reddit to do this. going to give it a try in a little bit
Oh, please link me the reddit profile. It is probably better than mine. Haha.
Edit: Found my profile. I set it to trigger at a notification event. Works for me. (Remove the .txt at the end if you want to load it into tasker and look at it).

but thanks for your profile. I loaded it, and it isn't giving me any errors, but I'm still not getting it to work. I have it set to trigger when a notification event happens...I set Hangouts to the "owner application" and still not getting it working.....I have almost given up on this working without root.
thanks for you help though. if you think of anything, I would greatly appreciate any help, but dont bend over backwards for me...haha
I've two rooted NSTs ( https://forum.xda-developers.com/nook-touch/general/nookmanager-updated-1-2-2-t3973967 ), one has been working fine. The other, however, seems to have its screensaver malfunctioning: it turns itself on from time to time, regardless of what the timeout value is. I even tried to set timeout value to be -1 as in (https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=29113425#post29113425 ).
So I guess there must be something wrong in the screensaver program itself. My plan is to copy the correct screensaver program from the working NST to the malfunctioning one. But I cannot find which program manages screensaver. I tried to look in /system/bin, yet screenshot doesn't seem to be the one.
Any ideas on which program to look for?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Well, there's "Daydream" and then there is sleep.
What happens when you just normally hit the power button when you lay your Nook down to go to bed?
Code:
# pm disable com.nook.partner/.daydream.DayDream
All that stuff is (like too much stuff) shoveled into /system/priv-app/partner.apk
Also /system/framework/android.policy.jar is involved.
I don't have a timeout, I just turn my Nook off.
There are various modifications in GlowHacks45 that you can use to make a regular cycling of sleep images.
