Hey everyone,
I just bought myself a brand-new Nexus One from eBay. I noticed that the Nexus One I have was originally purchased from Videotron in Canada and it has a carrier specific firmware.
Now my phone is currently sitting on Froyo 2.2 and when I checked for update the phone just says no update available.
This is what I see under "Menu-->Settings-->About phone"
Android version : 2.2
Core version : 2.6.32.9-27227-g3c9b0d [email protected] #1
Build number : 2.16.405.1 CL223106 release-keys
The phone never been rooted or hacked, it still has the original Videotron tweaked firmware.
My question is:
1. How do I flash my phone to the original Google firmware, so that I don't have to wait for an update?
2. What is the easiest method to root the phone for a Mac user?
3. I used to be an iPhone user and it was very easy for me to back-up the whole contents on the phone and restore them back. Is there an easy way, like a program similar to iTunes that can do this for my Nexus One (back-up the whole contents on the phone, for example my contact, SMS, music, and etc)?
4. Is there a way to install swype without rooting the phone?
Thank you for all you help
[Q] Change carrier specific (Videotron) firmware to original Google firmware.
1: It's easy, but will wipe your phone.
Download this: http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Pas...le_WWE_2.16.1700.1_FRG33_MFG_Shipment_ROM.zip
Extract it, and rename the extracted file to passimg.zip and place it on the root of your SD card. Power the phone off, hold Vol- and power it on again, it will detect the file and ask if you wish to install. Install it, reboot and wait for an OTA to the newest Google version (FRG83D currently).
2: To root, you can unlock the bootloader, or take your pick of apps to do it for you, it's all very straight forward regardless of you being a Mac user
3: Nandroid backup from custom recovery after rooting, it does the phone's entire state.
4. Yes, you don't need root at all.
It depends if you wanna unlock the bootloader, which will void the warranty!
If you don't care about warranty, do it that way it will be much easier.
If you wanna keep your warranty, follow my tutorial on my website: http://gravufo.kicks-ass.org/android.html
NOTE: When following the tutorial, do NOT download the ROM I am telling you to download, it seems to have issues updating to OTAs, so just take the ROM that Rusty linked!
NOTE2: I assume you speak french, considering you live in Quebec. Sorry if it's not the case
NOTE3: You can simply root with Universal Androot instead of SuperOneClick that I tell you to use in my tutorial (because it's only for Windows). The app can be found here: http://bit.ly/9wAKC5 (write this link in your phone and download/install the app, then root)
Good luck
I've seen that some of the Videotrons have the 0.35 hboot, so you may not be able to follow Rusty's approach...
Nice write up Gravufo!

I've not seen anyone fail to do the swap on Vodafone UK, and some or them have .35 as well, so fingers crossed.
Thanks for the compliment
And yeah we do have .35 cuz they're all SLCD (Vidéotron JUST launched their new network, so they only have the new Nexus and not the old ones)
Hopefully my tutorial will do the job, I should think of translating it to be able to give a very short answer to everyone in english I would already consider it "franglish" now since I'm using so many english terms (I can't stand hearing technology-specific french words, they're awful)
My French is pretty poor, and I could follow it! xD

lawl xD that's great
Is the same process by Rusty! could be applied to a Korean Nexus One? Just bought it from KT 1 month ago. I think it is the SLCD version.
Edit: Looks like Rusty!'s approach doesn't work on a Korean N1. Is there any way similar to Rusty!'s without rooting 'cause I want to keep my phone vanilla for now?

An English version of your tutorial would be much appreciated, though I guess Google Translate does an adequate job of it too =P heh

BUMP me during the holidays, because I have exams now and it's kinda hard to find time to translate all of it
Maybe they can use google translate... BTW, you should update your tutorial with the FRG83D build.
I've sent some info on another forum to gravufo... And, I attached the update.zip from FRG83 to FRG83D
Still gonna want to test it before making it happen... It would be easier if there was a complete rom going to FRG83D... but meh

For those of you wondering why it's not working, it's because I'm doing a few tests...it will be fixed in a matter of hours!
@Delarn, continue la conversation en PM s.v.p
I have to say not al didn't work tho. It was when I tried to install the ROM. It returned has bad. I downloaded other roms from rusty's link and they all returned bad. I'll try it later. Maybe I could ask GravUFO to help me by phone. I just need to know if he is ok to call a stranger.
It worked with GravUFO rom and it rock!!!

Hi all, just got an upgrade this week to the Atrix and thoroughly enjoying it so far. As a poweruser with the HD2 and all the hacks involved like android on nand etc, the first thing I did out of the box was root it.
Now to my point, all the custom roms I'm seeing seem to be for At+t and Bell (is that the right carriers?), and the forum is Atrix 4G. So can I as a UK user use these same roms/radios that are outlined in the development forum?
Any help is appreciated, Thanks in advance.
Greetings. I have the same backround as you . I nearly stayed with my hd2 but i'm glad I didn't. The only gingerbread rom for us is the orange one in the dev forum. I have had no success flashing this yet. Soft bricked 3 times and counting.
There is an international fruit cake in the works rich we will be able to flash from CWM.
So far rooting is fine.
Unlockingbootloader is fine.
flashing Cwm if fine.
I keep meaning to start a t-mob uk thread to collect all the info for us uk tmob users into one place. I will get round to it eventualy if some one doesn't beer me to it.

Hi there.
I am on Orange U.K, and i have successfully flashed this ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1169409. Following this guide to flash the ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1167373.
Many international users have flashed this ROM as well but REMEMBER to unlock your bootloader before even considering flashing this ROM.
When unlocking your bootloader, you will notice that you will only have around 300 total RAM but if you flash the hack relevant to your device, you will retain your RAM when you flash to Gingerbread.
Please follow the guide properly and don't skip any step. BTW, if your bootloader is not unlocked, we will probably be getting Gingerbread soon since the SOAK testing is about to begin very soon.
Similar story, i'm on Orange, followed those steps and it's working great. Just had to replace the missing sound files, but apart from that, works a treat.

Now since we have an unlocked bootloader, you can flash any ROM. Just make sure you flash the proper boot.img for your phone. See the fixes section for the pudding thread.

I thought we still had to be careful with the Roms, as some of them contain files that are tied to the kernel version (until the port everything over). For example, the ninja rom, I believe it is crrently tied to AT&T at the moment. I presumed we had to wait for a safe INTL version..
I think we can install and lunch any Rom now. The only limitation for inte. users is Ram issue. Otherwise will work fine.

great, thanks. Maybe I'll try another rom then I'd like one without any MotoBlur stuff on it, although the French 2.3.4 is running very well.
I need my acer a500 back to day one stock and currently my screen has a caution sign with a little android dude...
I had a custom rom and i lost my backup so i cannot restore
I need to get back to Acer_A500_0.000.00_1.104.02_COM_GEN1 and i cannot find it anywhere on the internet or on these forums. The cdn site doesnt work so idk what to do.
Im a noob at this going back to stock thing.
Anything would be greatly appreciated
Close this tread since no one will help.
Calm down guy.... help comes when someone has free time from the job/wife/house/car/etc...
Sounds like you need to download a copy of Acer_A500_4.010.11_COM_GEN2
What rom are you currently on and what recovery do you have installed?
Since the CDN site are no longer active ( 3.0.1 are dead.... HC 3.1 are still alive )... and going by what you'd requested (1.104.02_COM_GEN1).... I assumed you are in the US region...
previously... people were trying your method in order to get OTA updates... but since we have the latest "FULL" packages.... what is stopping you from flashing/updating to the latest for US region ??
Full Package and Update thread by Vache:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113878
and the latest for US region is:
Acer_A500_4.010.11_COM_GEN2 ( Honeycomb 3.1 .... no longer 3.0.1
link here: ( make sure to use Acer decrypter with the file !!! )
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=16326563&postcount=26
then follow by interim updates to:
Acer_A500_4.010.13_COM_GEN2
make sure to wipe and factory reset before updating !!
They are all available at the above thread
*** You do NOT need to be rooted when using the full packages.... just make sure your card is formatted with FAT32 and place the file at the root directory.
UnicornKaz- I'm not understanding what you just said about method?
.10 is a ~47 meg file
Acer_A500_4.010.11_COM_GEN2 is a 366 meg file
He needs .11. I will post a google documents link for the OP in a minute...

That's sorta what we told him (her?)... I think the problem is that the noobs aren't sure which rom/update is a full rom vs update. He should be able to figure it out now.
Yes Thank you to everyone for putting up with my annoyance and thank you all your help(the rush was my screen was black for awhile with no response lol), i just couldnt figure out everything i was reading. Just seemed like everything i was looking for wasnt really directly what i needed.
Mostly due to this is still a new process for alot of people (including me), but thats why xda rules the web!!

Youd understand if you were in my shoes when you cant find something and your $400 electronic device is not responding, yes its my fault so im sorry i had you look in here and waste your time posting what you posted )
I don't have enough posts to add to the thread in the Dev forums, so I will ask here.
My Iconia A500 is not rooted, I don't feel that I needed it to be rooted most of the time. Now that is out of the way, I have questions.
Is there a version of this Dev leak that I can flash if I don't care about rooting or recovery? I believe the version he leaked is a CWM or RA recovery flashable only, so I would need the original untouched release.
If I do flash this, I should be able to flash future versions correct, or possibly the final version of the ICS release?
Essentially I would like to use this release on my tablet without caring about root or recovery, but I also don't want to screw myself for future releases.
Is it possible to reflash back to an old Honeycomb release?
You might not be able to post in the dev thread, but you can read it. All your answers are in there, most are even in the OP!

If you don't care about root or recovery, than it is best you stay stock, and wait for OTA updates. This will keep you relatively safe.
Take a deep Breath this could turn out to have issues and not be complete.. There is only reports that it is flash-able.This does not guarantee that is will Run properly. As its a Acer development rom leaked to the public..
I will try it after there are 2 or 3 more days of comments. If it seems to be working well.I must have Root. Hope the post above mine has helped.
JUST Think if it does not pan out you can be one that said IM SMART I WAITED..
GOOD LUCK . DONT CROSS THE STREET WITHOUT LOOKING BOTH WAYS.
This rom is very easy to be flashed on the a500, dear erica_renee. I've done it tonight and I did come, like you, from the latest version of the unrooted Acer stock ROM.
In order to do this, you must:
- flash from your PC, a rooted rom version 3.2 on your tablet with the little app "DotNetDetecter". You can download it from somewhere on XDA Iconia A500's developers threads but I don't remember in which thread I found it.
- install the app "Acer Recovery" (free on the market)
- download the zip of RA recovery (You'll find the link in the Vache's thread) and install this recovery from your CMW recovery you've installed with the rooted rom 3.2 in the first step
- download and install from the RA recovery the ROM ICS that you can download on the website of Vache... Choose the "RA recovery" version of this ROM.
Very pleasant version, this ICS ROM ... but the low volume defect when I record sounds is still present...
Again and again I'm more and more convinced that this problem comes from the LOW QUALITY of these microphones !!!

are you saying that you flashed the cwm version of this on a a500.or do you have a501 Or are you using the non rooted full rom version.. And yes the mic issue i agree with . Considering going to Black box and buying upgraded mics and install . but i dont use it that much.
I have an Iconia A500, renee and I flashed the leaked Acer ICS stock ROM that Vache proposes on his website.
The link is on the first page of his thread.

Why do you fear not being able to go back to honeycomb ?
ICS a real improvement, for me. Google chrome is a great browser too.
These are my first impressions anyway. Very good, very pleasant.
But, if you're not in a hurry, you can wait one more month, of course.

I MUST have root access. that is all..
may i ask if you have checked the fallow..
GPS.
Can you tether to a android ad-hoc network
does Ti Backup work.
Does email exchange work.
I could go on but i will not .. THANKS IN Advance
No root on ICS (yet?).
I guess that you will loose it as well when you will install this Rom as an update by OTA...
I don't really need a root on my tablet, personaly, except when I want to test a custom Rom.
There is maybe a solution to keep the root anyway. Check in the thread of Vache.
Apart from that, everything works better than ever for me (gps, tether through my htc Desire, caméra, etc ... except the recurrent prob with the microphones ).
I don't use Titanium backup (that needs root, isn't it?) but MyBackup pro.
Email exchange? Do you mean the app working with Outlook on Windows? I don't use it neither. I use gmail and I import my other accounts on gmail. Sorry. But my email accounts (pop) work perfectly well.
Everything works very well actually with this Rom. I didn't notice any problem till now. No way to go back to HC...
I wonder if Thor has this yet. He is probably the best a500 ICS dev right now.

Just to let you know. I have flashed with the full 4.0.3 (not CWM/rooted one), and then used the first method here to restore back to 3.0.1, then installed CWM to install a ROM without any problems. I have since updated to 4.0.3 full again as it's by far the best ROM for me.
Ny the way, I noticed this morning that the ability to disable bloatware has been added to the stock ics rom via app section of settings, so one less reason for me to need root.

I'm curious to all this because I bought 2 used SPH-P100 tabs and one had ICS preinstalled. The other one is complete stock. Trying to find information on rooting, recoveries, kernels, firmwares, and a good ICS rom but information is limited and very scattered. I can't find 1 thorough document that contains everything.
I've never used ODIN to install a custom recovery. I'd like to tackle this within a few days so any steps, links, or suggestions on how to root, flash CWM, and steps for ICS would be welcoming.
