I've noticed something, hope someone can confim this; I've used my 7.7 tab with a SIM card inserted but removed it last week as I'm waiting to get a new SIM in the mail from a different provider. It seems that when there's no SIM in it the tab uses more power, the battery is drained quickly.
I'm using a custom ROM on it (Tweaked Stock for GT-P6800 Version 2.0)
Anyone out there who can confirm this?
cheers

I can confirm this, all samsung tabs seem to use more power when there is no sim card in them. You can try to enable airplane mode, this should turn radio off, but you can still enable wifi.

yes i can confirm my tab is consuming more power its like 10-15% an hour only wifi is working browsing internet
so i should consider putting a sim card to prevent hig drain of battery
turning airplane mode doesn't help
if someone can confirm it ?
I can confirm that even turning airplane mode when a simcard is present is causing higher power drain which is totally weird.

There's a mobile network setting and use packet data enable/disable it concerns also battery
Did anybody try switching radio off via the "test menu"? (dial *#*#info#*#*)
Sorry if this is a silly question. Just gathering info before deciding what version to get. I'm presuming that the WiFi ones don't have a sim slot at all, so this affects just the 3g ones? Did think that is was odd that I have heard a lot of people say that battery life is very good and some like yourselves say the hourly consumption is high.

Hi all,
Now I've not tried this myself however a friend of mine who recently got a DHD said he was lucky if the battery lasted a day on a full charge however by turning "Data roaming" off (even though he is not roaming) he is now getting anything between 2-3 days on one charge
Data roaming was turned off by default on mine and still the battery drained pretty quick.
Using data of any kind will affect the battery badly. Notes Traveler on my device is the cause of it needing charging every day.
Same as any phone, the more you disable the longer the battery will last.
If everything was implemented correctly by HTC, turning off Roaming should have no impact on battery life at all (provided you don't use Roaming).
I believe that your friend experienced the typical warm-up phase. For some (a lot?) people the battery life is terrible when they first use the DHD, but it gradually gets better.
Your friend probably attributes the increase of battery life to the disabled Roaming, while it is just a "natural" process.
I'm roaming all the time, and my battery is actually pretty good. If i don't use it much it can easily survive two days. My record is three days with light usage. (That was with the stock 1.72 ROM)
What is data roaming anyway???
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
Data roaming is set off by default. And data roaming controls data transfer when you are not on your home operator/network, i.e when traveling.
are your friend meant data connection?

He probably means "3G" off? I've had mine since the end of October and got into the habit of charging the phone every night. But then wondered about the effects of turning off wifi and 3G as, currently, I'm at home most of the time and have a PC with 24" screen to play with. Anyhow, with 3G and wifi turned off most of the time I get 3 days or so from a charge. I haven't investigated turning just one or the other off as life's too short ....

Yeah, 3G uses a bit, so the first thing i did was to disable it. No point for me using it actually, since it's WiFi all over the place here i live. If i need it, i'll simply enough just toggle it on.

You're roaming all the time and then in the next post you say that the first thing you did was to disable 3g... Are you just posting in order to follow others opinions or what?
And btw 3g doesn't actuality use much more power when compared to wifi, if you always use it somewhere where the signal is always poor then it's another thing.

If I meant 3G then that's what I would of said. So just to be clear, there is an option "Data Roaming" that when turned on will enable a data connection when you are in another country. My friend claims that while on his home network he has turned this option off and he has seen a big improvement on battery performance. If this is true or not I'm not sure, I just simply thought I would share his thoughts with everyone else.
I did this, once i remembered where it was and I got my old battery life back. So thats a bonus, not having to take my charger to work!

Hello,
I bought my phone a couple of weeks ago. At first, I didn't notice it, but after a few days I began to realize that the phone discharges completely after less than a day. I looked up and found the battery thread where I saw people going on about how happy they are with battery life, but others complaining about it draining real fast.
I found out all about wakelocks, and fast dormancy etc, and tweaked everything to the max, but the drain was still going on like crazy.
I thought maybe the stock ROM is bad and I need to use something different, and was about to flash, but then as a last resort I decided to try another sim card - I have 2 cards on the same line, one of which I use for my ipad - and swapped it.
Ever since, all the problems are gone! I even enabled fast dormancy again and I see that I have ~1% per hour drain when the phone sits still...
So, to anyone having large drains from cell standby with no simple and obvious explanation, I suggest trying to swap your sim card!
Hope this helps someone...
How can the sim card cause battery drain?
I'm still using the simcard from my last phone, though I still have the new simcard that came with the s3 but its not activated yet.
A guess is that the simcard caused connectivity issues and as such threw the phone out of fast dormancy all the time.

btw, does your sim card have different specifications? which one is newer?

The second one is newer, but was meant to be a data sim and had "Laptop" written on it, though it accepted and made calls just fine, but did not get sms until I asked it to be configured as the primary. Both of them were cut out from regular sim cards, because the providers here decide it is funny to charge around 25$ for giving you the same product with less 1 gram of plastic on it...
Today I got a normal micro sim (I guess they thought I already had one, and replacement is free) and it is also working completely fine.
I think the contacts in the old sim were causing high resistance because they were really worn out, and thus some extra power was lost on them.
I'm pretty sure most companies offer an extra sim to put into a car phone. Here it costs around an extra 1.50$ a month. In any case, my point wasn't about switching between 2 sim cards, but rather that a new sim card might cause less drain. You can believe it or not, but it worked for me. I can post before and after screenshots even.
So has anyone tried changing Sims for better battery life with success?
Same with me. I was having 2-3 % drop per hours, not sometimes the battery remains at 100% after 2 hours of inactivity
for all that have problem with fast dormancy wake lock or whatever I have found a way to disable it.
I tried a secred code*#9900# then ghokanmoral app which didnt work either
then I decided to play with all secred codes and found one where there is an option to disable it im running Wanam 3.5 JB LI7
type this code:
*#197328640#
then pres option:
[1]DEBUG SCREEN
after that
[8]PHONE CONTROL
.....
[3] NAS CONTROL
....
[5]RRC(HSPA) CONTROL
....
[2]CHANGE REVISION
....
[1]RELEASE R99(HSPA OFF)
then press on
HSPA OFF, HSUPA OFF
press menu button and END
you will notice that from H or H+ it changes to 3G straight away without reboot or anything
I hope it helps
That's retarded if you can't connect back to the H+ network?! That's not the point of FD, it't to allow it to go to 3G and sit, instead of H and sit.
And why not donwload from market

Fast Dormancy wakelocks have no real effect on battery drain on SGS3. I've tested it myself. I had high wakelocks caused by fast dormancy so i decided to disable it with gokhanmoral app. After i disabled FD, wakelocks has dissappeared completely and i was happy. But when i compared battery consumption overnight (10h standby) with FD on and off.. there was abolutely no difference. So i'm back with FD on even if my network doesn't support it. My battery drain in standby is not high either.

If I understood correctly, FD is affecting battery life only if you use mobile data always on right?
I use my data for 5 minutes then turn it off. Since it is hard to get info from my carrier, do you recommend to turn it off?

Hi,
There is some other threads about fast dormancy, since this is the most recent... I posted here.
One question: is fast dormancy has something to do to the network speed?
Because here in France (Orange carrier), with fast dormancy disable with FastDormacy Toggle (https://play.google.com/store/apps/...W5tb3JhbC5mYXN0ZG9ybWFuY3l0b2dnbGUuaTkzMDAiXQ..) I have about 4,5/5 Mbps download/0,9 Mbps Upload/75 ping... And with fast dormancy enable I have about 6,5/6,8 download (even 7,* sometimes, but not very reliable)/1,5 Mbps upload/140 ping...
I did tests with Speed Test (https://play.google.com/store/apps/...DEsIm9yZy56d2Fub28uYW5kcm9pZC5zcGVlZHRlc3QiXQ..).
I tested the same hours, places and after different times and places, to summarize a bunch of different tests, there is still a huge difference between fast dormancy enabled/disabled mostly about download speed... , at least for me.
Normaly fast dormancy does not affect the network speed
In any case for me with or without fast dormancy I have not noticed any battery drain, more or less
@viking
I think you have a typo. It says you disabled fast dormancy in both comparisons.
So which was faster for you?

Bluetooth off. WiFi have been off most of the time since I have been away from WiFi signals. Most sensors are off. GPS on. NFC off. Talking about 50 min. Screen on for 1h 11min. No heavy use and battery saving on. Push mail on.
Same kind of use I had with my Galaxy Note 3. SGS5 seems to last about half the time that Note 3 lasted.
Android System and Android OS uses to much of the battery, this can't be normal.

Figured it out (I think)
Hi guys i think i MIGHT have figured it out.
Its the bloody wifi, EVEN WHEN TOGGLED off stays on. Annoying as hell and wtf android and Samsung? Its gonna upset a lot of people...
But if you want to read about it look here: http://forums.androidcentral.com/htc-one/344085-wlan-rx-wake.html
Basically to fix the android battery drain, you need to
Go to wifi settings, Advanced, I Keep wifi on during sleep, change to Never, OR when plugged in. (i chose never, T-mo) and Disabled Always allow scanning, and disabled Network notification.
Apparently the kernel keeps waking the device constantly. EVEN if wifi is off, it still turns on.
I will charge to full and test. There is an app called Wakelock according to the screenshot.
Guys try this and tell me if it works. Wifi should still work as usual after changing advanced settings when toggled on off...
I also noticed, even with wifi off, it still shows as enabled on the battery usage as a green bar, so this HAS GOT to be it.
Test this out guys, thank me if it works. Tell me if it works.

OH MY GOD
you people go 12 hours and still have 50-60% and you complain?
It just shows me how much my case is worse...
I just got home, 12 hours from charge and I had like 10% and to survive that long I had to turn off location services completely and be on power saving mode the whole day.
something is seriously wrong with my phone's battery.
I hope you guys realise that Android OS and Android System shows high relative to other applications.
So if you leave your phone to sleep, nothing is really running, only Android OS and Android system.
When you actually use your phone for 4 or 5 hours straight you will see Android OS and Android system percentage not to be so high. But really it isn't any lower. It is just lower in relation to screen and other applications you are using.

I think, this is one of the defects.
I have also had this problem, I have not changed many settings since day 1 of owning this phone - nfc data bluetooth & sync off, Wifi scanning all the time only when charging & drains so much during the night! Last night I was on 42% at 21:50 then at 22:50 it was on 23% then at 23:50 it was on 15% & at that point I put ultra power saver on, which said I would have 1 day of power left.... I checked again at about 01:00 & my phone had run out of battery & shut down! Today I am taking back my phone to the shop & am demanding a new handset, I think I may have just had a faulty S5? Also my phone was getting quite hot at night in my pocket & also had a problem sometimes when powering on with the power button to wake the phone nothing happens & got stuck in ultra power mode a few times & rebooted? Other than this I love the S5 & hope my new handset is perfect? IT BETTER BE? [emoji35]
