Alright, so I'm looking for a developer or two, that can tick some of the criteria, because I'm a bit busy, and another dev on the team would be awesome.
What we need:
Graphics designer, preferably UI design but a few logos, icons here and there
ROM development, you need to know the basics
Kernel development, if you know C/c++ great, if not I can teach you how to compile kernel etc.
App development, you need to know the basics of Java.
And you need to be a good developer too
Anyone? PM.

I would love to help, but alas, I've not done any dabbling in Android. You would just end up training a power user, so good luck getting some help!

Would love to, but my only coding experience is with private Ragnarok servers so I'd need to learn the basics first.. Mind you I learn anything tech-related very fast.
Not sure what kind of graphic design you need but I make my own signatures, avatars and guild emblems.
Is there a good guide you know of to start off with? For coding, I mean.
Also my phone is screwed so testing wouldn't work too well.

We all know these phones work through good ol fashion magic...so aslong as we agree on that then we be cool...ill be expecting a pm shortly...oh ya i work only 2.25 days of the week, I dont do deadlines and a mandatory raise every 2.5 months based on my alchemy skills.
I love to help out but I only know c/c++

Hello Everyone,
If you have not read there was a post made by vbhines wanting to start a group named QAM which is a development group completely for the android community (specifically the samsung captivate for the moment). This means no more flaming, no more trolling, no more blaming other people for stealing, no more fighting!
"We are a community for the community."
My plans for this group is to help improve the experience of any phone that we develop for. We will help out anyone that is in need meaning that if an app or a kernel or anything that will help improve the experience of android on our phones we may or may not make that specific item that is requested or wanted etc.
Since we are a community for a community everything we will be releasing will be open source so whatever way we choose (more then likely on github) to release the source of our work you will be able to get it. Our documentation will be the best possible.
We will always be looking for more contributors to this group/cause. It doesn't matter what you can do it only matters if you help out and don't ruin the work flow . Developers will always be in need as well as UI/Graphic Designers. People that will help out with documentation would be fantastic so that we will always be well organised. We would like this group to be as diverse as possible.
We want to be a much more mature development group so our releases will be well tested so updates come less often which means your experience will be much better since you do not have to flash so often.
We already have quite a good backing by some new up and coming developers who have quite a nice background and we are hoping for more backing by the rest of the community.
I will be updating this more and more because there are more things to come.

I would appreciate it if everyone listed good books or web pages to learn programming from. Its been one of my many dreams to actually develop for android . Yes its up and running. You sure you got the right server and everything?
Alright guys the site is up and running I just need to setup categories for the forum and we should be good to go! Everything should be done by today depending on how fast I finish up homework etc. I am hoping it will be done though.
We will start a lot more development this weekend. Since I wont have anything to do plus I have 2 weeks off.
The plans for this weekend is to setup a hierarchy and actually establish developers etc.

I'm going to hop over to irc tomorrow. I'm best on the debugging end, but not yet in apk modding minus the lg launcher below. I've got to crash this evening, but ill be around tomorrow eve.
(Did also try and help xcal with alittle on his kernel and the headset issue, but he ended up cracking it himself... him and I went back and forth with pms for weeks....)
I would love to help however I can. I have some Java and C experience (not a whole lot, i can debug) and extensive web design experience. Let me know.
Hello All,
This post is mainly for developers and is meant to just be kind of a "brain tickler". I think it would be kind of interesting if any ROM, app or mod developers (or android devs in any capacity) to try and provide us the community with a quick and dirty (or longer if you have massive amounts of time, which I'm guessing you don't ) explanation of how you got into Android Development. If you have some coding background already, or if you were already fluent in most linux config files and such, or what I think would be somewhat interesting is someone with none of the above who just runs ubuntu in a vmware for the sole purpose of programming android, and they've never touched code before.
So Devs, tell us your stories. I feel it might help to "humanize" what developers are and help some people who may be afraid to give it a try building their own stuff if we see the wide range of Devs.

Well let me be the first.
I started rooting phones with my evo. I didn't do know developing untill done time has passed with my epic. You cam say I was a noob when I joined xda. I didn't join xda untill after I got my epic. I had no experience with linux. I'm basically learning as I go along. I have a background in web design. Mostly html and xml and a little bit of java script but all on web design.
I started developing on the epic cause I seen to themes I liked and mixed them together to make one. Androdena and baked snack. This started my quest to make the perfect theme in my eyes. I seen things both themes left things un touched and didn't complete the look. So I started digging in deeper. It was at this time I started getting help from others but for the most part I'm 80% self taught in the short time I've been doing it. Now I'm teaching the people that taught me the last 20%.
As my theme progressed different mods started coming out and I wanted to add them to my theme. That's when I started learning how to edit .jars and writing/editing smali code.
I'm now at the point I'm working on my own mods and porting others. I've been working with k0nan with the SRF rom and reading as much info as I can as I wanna start making my own kernels and roms.
I did all this and I've only been a member if xda for a little over 7months.

Alright I'll share my story. I started developing a few years ago on WM6.5.xxx. I did that for a little while and then moved to BlackBerry. I made the switch to Android last summer. I settled on the Epic and began tinkering. I started out by reverse engineering ROM zips. I started adding to or taking away from and it just kinda grew form there.
I started customizing my ROM's before flashing them and got pretty comfortable doing that. Eventually I worked up the nerve to start sharing the customized ROM's. Over time I was able to do more and more on my own. Making simple scripts or modifying more complex ones and putting ROMs together on my own. My midNIGHT ROM got it's name from the time of day it was I usually worked on it. My life is pretty complicated so the only time I really got to work on this stuff was around midnight. The name just kinda stuck.
I got some good feedback. One day it occurred to me that I could use an Android ROM to help spread Autism Awareness. Most of you know my story if you don't and are interested you can read my blog. People seem to really like the ROM and as more people used it the more I was able to help spread awareness. I have all of you to thank for that. Now I see Autism Awareness ribbons around the forum. I hope to continue to learn from the AMAZING developers here and maybe even some new ones. I want to say thanks to all of you for your support and thanks to all the developers for helping me learn by freely sharing their knowledge.
I would really like to learn how to tear into a kernel, or mess w/ the bluetooth stack hahaha
Have no idea where to start, so i keep poking around
Maybe some day i'll be able to develop roms too
Although i have no clue about programming this stories make me want to take a class
I do see that making a rom is a crazy amount of work but i wanna say some day i gave back to the xda community

Hey everyone I would like to know the best way to start learning android. To start off I know that Java is heavily used and so is XML. XML is usually the theming part and Java is for Rom building if I'm correct. I'd like to know how to go about learning it and which path to take first. Do I buy books? Do I follow guides online? Do I look up youtube videos? Also do I have to be smart to learn Java or XML. I am no genius but I consider myself pretty smart if I use repetition and keep pushing myself to learn which I am fully capable of doing. If someone could tell me on how to go about learning Android Development that would be great.
Thanks,
Sean Myers

You do need to know some linux because some of the rom has to be done in a linux os.

Try to create and deploy the "Hello Android" app described here:
(I can't post external links until I have 8 posts here, sorry:
developer.android.com/guide/tutorials/hello-world.html )
I did it under Windows XP using eclipse, and deployed it to the emulator running on my PC and to my unrooted stock DroidX (Android 2.2) as my first Android project.
Knowledge of XML is always a good thing, but not required in that tutorial.
Once you have a basic app working and deployable, you can modify it to try more advanced things.

do developers tend to have professional education in linux or are most of us self educated?
there is a vast amount of information out there. where woukd you send someone with little to no kniwledge of linux to learn the basics? i read and read posts, but often i am behind the curve on the basics so i cant understand all of the posts.
last question. if i run ubuntu on my computer will i be learning the same basic stuff for both ubuntu and android, as far as development goes? commands and logic? so far xda has been by far the best source of information. been reading the android developer page. its interesting.
Try the "Hello Android" book. It really helped me get the sense of the Android OS. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/1934356565/ref=redir_mdp_mobile/189-8058323-8893839 let me know what you think?

I love all the roms, kernels, and themes brought to me by the samsung epic commmunity, but I wanna learn how to do this all by myself. I wanna learn how to understand and make a rom better, and make a blazing fast kernel.
Any tips on where to start or which code i should learn to write first? Any reccomendations or tips would be awesome, thanks.
Me too.
I got basic understanding on how to make moded roms, add apk's,themes, theme apk's,add kernels to roms but thats about it.
Coding zi robably require knowledge of some sort of computer language.
Well im starting to theme first... get used to xmls and suck and move on... and I was told to pick up bagginner books on java.

Dudes,
As everybody who is active in the X8 section, noticed that FXP leaved and i think that the other devs will leave in the near time.
We as proud owners of the X8 should think about what we need for our phone.
So each user who can do something for it should do it. If it is a theme, an icon pack or a widget, please do it and post it.
So what do you think about my idea?
Heh i will do something, if i can but sorry i cant program anything so sorry

No big loss here ... the FXP ROM is incomplete (VGA-only camera, broken FM Radio) and bug riddled, and the "how to install" is lousily documented making it a unnecessary rocket science to get it installed.

I don't see any indication that doixanh has abandoned us. He said he needs some time for his own (real life matters), so that's perfectly fine.
While I loved the fast-paced updates he released I think it would be sufficient if he would be so kind to cook an update once in a while when there's either a new Android revision (i.e. 2.3.8) that fixes a security problem or when there's a fix for some severe bug.
GingerDX, in my opinion, is THE most feature-complete and stable Android 2.3 series ROM we have for the X8.
If we all learn about rom/app development, our phone will live forever (?)
as I can learn to develop? I'd like to help.
If someone is willing to be kind, and make thread for beginner developers, which includes:
-First steps in system developing
-Tutorials on app and rom building
-Tools etc.
Also, include easy tasks that devs are not up to/having no time for, like "Test that app with different somenting-values on this file, report",or "Examine this device, find more about drivers, parts, etc.",or "Translate this ..." That's what users can do.
I'm certainly willing to participate on this.

Android evolves from Linux. So it makes natural sense to have tools on our linux desktop as well.
