Not for those of us unlucky ones (maybe I'm the only one) that the custom recovery will NOT work for. No matter what I try, it wont mount data/recovery, so no backup can be made or flashing a custom rom. Plus I have a new problem. Had to rsd the sbf back and now I can't even gain root on the phone.

I've got the froyo on it. When trying to root, I've used the method that worked for me originally, superoneclick. It just keeps not responding on my windows 7 machine but didn't use to. As for the recovery, I did exactly as laidaxins post but it would give me that above error on the phone. I have tried getting help from laidaxin and winsuk to no avail. I even tried getting ahold of romracer to build a proper recovery since I can donate my flipside for the cause, but haven't gotten a response from him at all.
Use z4root go to 4shared.com and search for it there. Then download and install it. Make sure usb debugging is on and unknown sources is checked. Then run z4root and let it sit. Let me know if that works for you.

Edit: found the apk here on xda. Doesn't work. At step acquiring root shell, it just closes out. Upon reboot, no superuser. Wasn't meant to be I guess. It was rooted at one time, but guess it just got tired of being told who the boss is.

That didn't work either like it did in the past on my win 7 machine. The program stops responding on killing daemon server.
Superoneclick doesn't always work. That's why I recommend using other options. Also there is a one click root for the Droid x Droid 2 etc on droidforums I have used it on many different Motorola's with a lot of success.

So I am trying to install update.zip to root my vibrant but the power button is broken with JI6 z4mod patched kernel. I am trying to root the phone and I have the update.zip in both sdcard and sdcard/sd folders. I am looking for a way to install update.zip in recovery mode without power button.
Is this possible using ADB on a nonrooted device? I have already tried this without success....
Also, I can't use adb remount since I dont have root access.
Code:
adb shell recovery --update=sdcard/update.zip
Anyone out there found a solution to this? The power button on my Nexus One is completely shot, and luck would have it that I voided my warranty to replace a smashed digitizer shortly before it started to act up, so no love from HTC.
I get by with WidgetLocker, which allows wake-via-trackball, so I haven't yet sprung the US$50 to buy a replacement power button/upper circuit board on eBay. I wanted to apply the Gingerbread update.zip to my phone, but I haven't yet found a way to do that without having to use the power button somewhere in the procedure.
Advice?
Google Nexus One
Android 2.2.2 FRG83G
Rooted using SuperOneClick v1.7
Thanks!
you don't "install a update.zip"
You leave it on your external SD Card that you mount on your computer. and thts that.
Okay read your question one more time..
Here's what you do.
This rooting method doesn't require you to go into Recovery at all.
Use a program called "super one click root" it some-how which idk, puts a superuser app on your app drawer, and if the superuser app is there, your rooted. so try that. I'll edit this post if i find the link. hold up.

I am not familiar with this mod z4 kernel... Is there not a revert?
Why don't you root with super one click, then use rom manager from koush to install a new kernel?
No power button needed. (I think)

Is the physical power button broken, or is it software broken?
If it's software wouldn't an odin to jfd fix it? To access d/l mode without power button, run "adb reboot download".
If its the physical button...i don't know if this works on stock recovery but I was able to use the back button to select in clockwork red. I didn't have the stock recovery long enough to remember if it works on it.

Yeah, if you are stuck on a kernel with bad button mapping then you should probably just odin out.

Agreed, I think through ROM manager you have to select flash rom or something to that effect, but it will let you flash any .zip including a new kernel

LOL, yeah took me a minute to figure out the new key combos when I did a wipe after flashing to GB a week or two ago.
Using root explorer rename the file BlurContactsSync.apk to BlurContactsSync.apk.bak
This will remove the sync icon. No need to wipe. It's a redundant file that does what Google sync does natively.

I did the hard reset. The phone is crashing nonstop. Freezes for sometimes 4+ minutes and then reboots.
I am using Launcher Pro. I'm going to try to ditch it and see if that helps.
Thanks for the info on the new button config. to get into that mode to instal GB I used the search key.
I installed the rooted version of 2.3.3 on mine, I had a similar problem. All I done was factory reset, wipe cache, and wiped dalvik cache. That fixed it. This was all done by using droid 2 bootstrap program, not stock recovery.

Use the Droid 2 bootstrapper because it gives a newer version of clockworkmod recovery
At this point, install instructions almost always dictate which bootstrapper to use X vs. 2, but currently we are using Droid2 on GB because its a newer version. There are people saying once GB is flashed you can use Dx, but.... why not just use D2... heres the thread.
http://www.droidxforums.com/forum/g...rapper-gingerbread-4-5-588-clarification.html
I believe the persistent sync icon was avoidable by wiping data before flashing GB as stated in the pre-release thread, but if the contacts thing fixes it...

You would need to use Root Explorer to change it. Make sure you mount the folder as R/W.
The easy way is to:
1. Go into "Settings"
2. Go into "Applications"
3. Select "Manage Applications"
4. Select "All"
5. Find the following and clear the data and cache.
"Contacts Sync". "Google Contacts Sync", "Google Calendar Sync",
This did it for me.

You need to follow the tutorials a bit more closely.
Run revolutionary to get s-off.
Flash custom recovery.
From custom recovery flash superuser. There's a link to it on the revolutionary site.
Alternatively you can just do a nandroid backup and go ahead and flash whatever rom you want.
Don't install Rom Manager, do everything manually to minimize error and know what you're doing should you ever get yourself in trouble.
Done!
Also, Amon Ra is a better choice of recovery for the Evo. If you're used to ClockworkMod and want to use that then that's fine too. You may need Amon Ra to flash certain zips though.
