Having a rooted Nook (CM7), I'm looking to stream video to it via DLNA. On my PC, I have the application "PS3MediaServer".
My Thunderbolt has the "Connect Media" application, I was curious if there is an app/method of doing the same on the Nook (or really any other non-sense Android device)?
Any suggestions?

I've done alot of research on the subject and I would always end up getting discouraged because idiots write these crazy bad reviews on much of the software available that's perfectly capable. Finally I settled on TVersity and it works great. I can access all my media from any one of my devices but most importantly my Nook with CM7.
There may be better options. I wouldn't know. I didn't need to check into it any further.

But, what Android app would you use...? If you are looking for a DLNA provider application that serves on your PC, I would check out "PS3MediaServer". Awesome application and works on anything that accepts DLNA.
I'm just looking for an app that plays DLNA, not the server app.
I'm sorry. I was just trying to provide a solution that worked for me and solved my issue which was similar to yours. I used to have the PS3media server but I stopped using it because of TVersity. I had no idea it could stream to android as well. I'd like to try it again. Anything I should know in regards to setting it up. I'd appreciate it.
So are you just looking for a player? Have you tried MoBo Player? I use it for everything now?
Or I'm thinking now your looking for an app to navigate your media so you can select to stream. I would have thought you would use your browser for that. Sorry. Search the market for an app called Skifta. I just downloaded it and gave it a run. Much more elegant compared to my browser method and finds all my media servers. I'm happy to say it works great with PS3Media server so far.
I have aVia on my Thunderbolt, and it's pretty slick. I am running eyeballer's CM9 nightlies on the Nook, and haven't been able to get anything to see the DLNA server there. The server itself is an older Gentoo box with minidlna running. Runs solid to the Logitech Revue, too.
I tried most of the CM9 ROMs on this forum and none of them would get apps like UPnPlay or BubbleUPnP to work.
Basically those apps should wirelessly connect to UPnP music servers.
It works fine on the CM7 ROMs that I've tried though.
This is likely to be an issue with WiFi driver not properly supporting UPD Multicast.
vampyrex13 also faces this issue.
Just wanted to check if devs are aware of the problem.
Thanks.
Hmm I dont like either because they just suck and over complicated.
For playing/controlling music via the device, I HIGHLY Recommend 2Player Network Music Player. Its by far the best DLNA/UPnP frontend App.
Now as far as letting your device become a server, controlleble by others. I use Twonky Mobile. If Im not mistaken, it works fine on Ice Cream Sandwitch now. Program a lil crappy but its free and does what I need.

re-read the post. this is about UDP multicast, which is required for all upnp/dlna. 2player is affected by this issue as well.
i wanted to mention this in the main ICS dev thread a while back, but thought I didn't have enough posts. so I PMed Jackpot about it.
this was a couple of weeks ago:
bubbleguuum said:
Is it possible that in this alpha, UDP multicast does not work with the WiFi chipset ? This is required for discovery. If you get other UPnP apps to discover stuff, then UDP multicast is definitely supported and the proble is elsewhere. You may also want to try again after rebooting your WiFi router and your phone. You can also send me a log file if you wish.

i tried testing udp multicast between my phone and my kf using iperf and it was successful. however, i can't be sure if it was actually testing multicast, or just udp, as it did have me specify an IP address. if i was truly testing multicast, i shouldn't need an IP, right?
I had sent a BubbleUPnP logfile to bubbleguuum two days ago and that's how I ended up posting here.

Sorry I'm not that knowledgeable.
What should be the next steps then?
Oh yea, now I remember. I did have issues under ICS. My only issue was when I tried turning my KF into a UPnP server (via Twonky). Everything on my network acted real stupid and I had to reboot my NAS.
When I wanted to just play music on my KF (via 2Player), it worked just fine.
My setup is a DNS-320 with nas-tweaks to run Twonky Server 6.
Is 2Player the only app you tried?
I fired up the log and a wireshark machine and checked what's going on.
I have the what, but not the why...
It looks like the tablet sends and received multicast data just fine, but once it joins a multicast group, it loses the ability to receive unicast packets.
I see the twonky server on the tablet sending out messages about its existence. I see it receive other twonky devices existence data. Then the tablet appears to try to query directly from the devices to get capabilities. These timeout and it removes the other device from its list.
Meanwhile, on wireshark, the kindle is sending out arp requests like crazy, for these fellow twonky machines, for its default gateway, for everything. The responses are coming back, but the kindle never seems to see them.
So, either it loses the ability to receive unicast packets or it loses the ability to process arp responses. Either seems to be pretty deadly to IP. Had to shut off wireless and turn it back on before normal network behavior restored.
I'm looking at it more, but thought observations might be useful to anyone else jumping in.
jd
Edit:
Found these two lines in the log. Not _sure_ they're the cause, but looks promising. Unfortunately, they don't appear to come from the wpa_supplicant source no matter what it says, so maybe the kernel driver?
E/wpa_supplicant(21290): ERROR - wpa_driver_tista_private_send - error sending Wext private IOCTL to STA driver (ioctl_cmd = 8000305, res = -1, errno = 95)
E/wpa_supplicant(21290): ERROR - Failed to handle rx data filter command!

i experience this exact issue when trying to run any upnp app on my kf. in the main ICS thread, the bug tracker currently lists wifi as 'spotty'. some people have to turn wifi off then on again to restore connection, some have an infinite connect-attempt loop, etc. im curious if this might be related. i'll see if i can get anyone experiencing spotty wifi to post wireshark logs, and i'll do the same when i can.
and yes, the ability to process arp responses is absolutely critical to IP. the loss of arp could result in any of the wifi issues i've seen people post about thus far.

I can confirm your findings.
SSD discovery of the UPnP server seems work fine as I see it replying to the multicast group with its uid and service notifications.
However the KF keeps on sending search request as if it couldn't process the replies.

The wpa_supplicant error messages are a constant in the log when things quit working, but I cannot find the code that is calling it. I've searched all the files in the wpa_supplicant tree source and cannot find the text of those messages at all.
Probably going to require someone cooler than me to troubleshoot, but I'll keep looking in my "spare time".

That is inside the wifi driver source (and there in wpa_supplicant_lib), part of it is also fixed for the linux wifi sources: http://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-wireless/msg84045.html
The android source is different, but i didn't look at the exact differences between them yet. Are you sure that problem really cause those error message?
Does UPnP work on stock/CM7 ?

Nope, all I am sure of is that the message occurs in proximity to when the wifi quits working.
Considering what we see is that the kindle seems to quit receiving certain packets, it seems likely that a problem with something that is supposed to apply a filter to received packets could be the cause. But I'll follow the links you gave and see if I can see anything or figure out how to insert more debugging info.
But, if anyone knows of anyplace(s) uPnP is definitely working, it would be useful for comparison.

do you mean any roms? for kf, only the cm7 i can say for sure. ill test on my gf's kindle (running pure stock) in a bit and let you know.
EDIT: upnp works on pure stock kf (6.2.2)
if you mean ics on any hardware, then i can say it works on my g2, currently running andromadus v12, but it also ran on virtuous quattro rc3 as well.
I can confirm it works on CM7.

Specifically, I meant kernels or roms. Anyone using miui Cm9 that can say if UPnP is working? Or anyone tried with intersectRavens kernel? I'd try myself but I'm leaving on a business trip today and don't want to mess with my beautiful kindle until I return.
The more known good versus known bad will make it easier to zero in on the culprit.

i'll start downloading various roms/kernals and give it a go when i get home today. so far i've tried the main cm9 (every update since early January), hashcode's cm9 and zone's cm9, but those last two are both based on the main cm9. I do know the main dev build changed kernals a while back, but I don't think they've ever used intersectraven's kernal.
I run bubbleupnp on stock. Works great. Just to confirm it does work on the fire

miui (4.0.3) is a no-go as well. this seems to be an all-encompassing ics issue unless anyone has any other combinations they can think of?
also, there's no way this is related to hardware acceleration, right?

No, but we may switch to a new wifi driver and wpa_supplicant v0.8 with a 3.0 kernel, so the problem may not occur there.
I am setting up a media streaming device for someone who isn't tech savvy but wants to use NP for movies/tv/Netflix.. What are the best basic settings/config for using NP with Kodi and Netflix? They may or may not use external usb or mouse/keyboard.
5.1.1? Android M preview 3?
Rooted?
TWRP?
Custom Rom? CM12 / other??
**UPDATE**
Here is what I did which seems to work great:
- Unlocked Bootloader
- Flashed TWRP
- Flashed 6.0 firmware (fugu) from Google's site
- Kodi installed from google play.
- Used “http://fusion.tvaddons.ag” addon to help with installing/updating streams. Selected "hubwizard" and "addoninstaller" under "start-here" directory to get basic addons/content/features working.
- Saw an issue with constant buffering. Used: Programs > Maintenance Tool > System Tweaks > Zero Cache (Yes when menu popped up). This expands the space where the download is stored, allowing a longer buffer than default. So you can pause a slow loading tv show/movie and let it load so you dont have viewing issues.
- Enabled Autoplay option on Genesis settings which is easier than searching thru the links provided.
- Added the xml file shown here so that I could use the Play/Pause button as a "right-click" option when content isn't playing.
Let me know if there is anything else I can change to make things run smoother. Otherwise, I'm pretty happy with the set up.
didn't see any response so I kept digging and came up with this...
- Using stock 5.1.1 from the standard update. Waiting until M preview is in a more final state.
- Kodi installed from google play.
- Installed “http://fusion.tvaddons.ag” addon to help with installing/updating streams. Help link here.
- Installed Genesis and Phoenix right away for basic content.
- Saw an issue with constant buffering. Used the TV Addon program to "Clear Cache" and enabled "Zero Cache". This expands the space where the download is stored, allowing a longer buffer than default. So you can pause a slow loading tv show/movie and let it load so you dont have viewing issues.
This seemed to get content streaming pretty good, but I could use any additional tips to make it better.

I used TVAddons for a long time, on Ouya, an HTPC, and the Nexus Player. But I have recently been using The Beast by Chris B http://chrisbkodi.uk
I installed on my NP with this method: Install Kodi from the Play Store. Go to System>File Manager>Add Source type http://spartanpixel.net/repo click OK
Go to System>Addons>Install From Zip , select repo as the source, then select the zip and click OK. Wait about 10-15 seconds, you should see a message that the wizard has been installed.
Go to Programs, and select the config wizard. You should see the option of installing two different builds: The Beast or Spartan. I have tried both, I don't know what the major differences are other than the skin for Spartan is pretty cool. It's going to take a few minutes to install, so don't worry if it's slow and you will see another install progress bar after the first one finishes. After the entire process is done, you will get a message saying that installation is complete. So click OK, now THIS part is VERY important: The next message will say that you need to force shutdown Kodi, DO NOT click the button saying to go ahead and shut down. You will need to actually pull the power cord out from the back of the Nexus Player, and then plug it back in. Wait for it to boot up, go to Kodi and you should now see The Beast splash video. Everything will be configured for you, but you may want to go in and disable the adult stuff if you dont want it, and get rid of anything else that you dont want. I find some of the IPTV stuff is a little difficult to work with so I dont use much of it.
The only other thing I have done is go into Video settings, and set it to sync to my display refresh rate. You will also want to use ES File Explorer to upload a keymapping xml for the remote. https://www.dropbox.com/s/c1r944j93oj8sq6/nexus_remote.xml?dl=0

Guys, I follows this and went with the xbmc repo, a lot of the channels are dead.
How do I install Genesis?
Also, how do I undo what I did? Uninstall fusion and start from scratch. I'd like to try some other builds above.

Go to your Programs section in Kodi, there is a Fresh Start option that the fusion installer should have added. Run that and it should put you back to vanilla Kodi.
If you are able to side load, and you want the TV Addons build, maybe try side loading TVMC you should be able to put the APK on a thumb drive and access via ES File Explorer, be sure to enable Unknown Sources in Android.
One combo that worked well for me was side loading SPMC and then running the fusion installer.

Setting up the pirate side of Kodi for somebody else with no knowledge of the world you are getting them into is a bad deal for you. These pirate addons are not for the uninitiated. They are unreliable at best. Make sure you are willing to be their continual tech support. In the past 45 days or so everything mentioned in the thread have undergone some catastrophic failure or complete relaunch. Make sure you teach your friend how this stuff works so there are no unrealistic expectations of availability or reliability.

Maybe with the Live TV feeds they are. But Genesis is fairly rock solid. I can do without the others (for the most part).
Loaded THE BEAST.
I really like the interface (large fonts; cool backdrop images) for KODI.
I just had to turn off every other section but the main MOVIES/SPORTS/LIVE TV sections though because it's so laden with adult content links.
I wish it would come more like stock (without all the adult) and a wizard to add on the adult stuff if people desire.
Otherwise, it has been stable.
The LIVE TV links are still very hit and miss with THE BEAST.

Rooting is a toss-up.
If you want to keep 5.0, then you need to root.
If you want Marshmallow, then do not root right now.
Root and flashing to older images (if needed for whatever reason) is pretty straight-forward.
Tons of guides on the internet/Youtube.
Live TV is hit or miss.
With movies and shows on Genesis, play is fine unless I pick a bad stream. Then, the data feed is too slow to keep up and the show/movie pauses/buffers.
Last night, though, I wanted to check the score of the game, so I loaded ESPN from cCloudTV. It was buffering every 5 seconds. Basically unwatchable.
Not sure if it was due to the stream (# of people streaming = low data feed) and/or my connection speed (20 mbps). But live TV does not really "buffer" like movies/shows as it is not a DVR, so when it buffers, the live action wants to catch up, so you get skips/stutters, etc.
Likewise, I do not know if I'm missing addons or the streams are not reliable, but channel surfing is not really reliable. I get error messages that I need to check the log.
I got Kodi setup with all the 'free' stuff = thanks to this thread.
I am trying to add my own local content, but when I go to add the SMB share, I can see all the computers on my network, I can select my home server (windows 8.1), but after I select it, I get an error and I cannot connect to the share.
My windows based Kodi setup finds my server just fine and I can add the seperate shares with no issues. Anyone else experience this issue on the NP?
i definitely need to do the play/pause right click mod
I was able to setup a SQL server and one HTPC a firetv and my new nexus player are able to connect. no issues.
I gave up on garbage Kodi, everyone tells me how great it is well, if you mean about 30 minutes searching through dozens and dozens of stupid streams to get one that will actually play and not buffer, then yeah works great. I was told, use autoplay then you won't have that issue, well, I turned on autoplay and stupid POS still didn't work, either the video wouldn't play/buffer/stutter, or it just wouldn't load any streams at all. Also kept getting cache was full errors constantly so I gave up and went back to simple easier torrents.

Start out with a fresh copy of Kodi 15.2 then add all the sources for repos(srp.nu, tvaddons.ag, etc.). Then install all the repos. And Then install all the add-ons from the repos you just installed. Then load elmerohueso' s repo from fusion so you can use his helix ++ skin (it allows you to use "any" 7 icons under "any" of the main screen sections (pictures,videos,music,..etc). This way you have access to all the addons add-ons you want without any of the stuff you don't.

Alternatives to ccloud: You need to install dextertv(plays live tv really well even on 3mbs time warner connection but you need to sign in with a valid email- I just use a temp email generator easily found on google search), and UFO stalker clone(youtube kraz inabox) or i4ATV which are both stalker clones and play over 800 channels really well without buffering. Google search, DexterTV, Kraz inabox, newtechevotution, Joenobody010101, husham memar, soloman for awesome turorials on the latest greatest add-ons

Get a micro usb to regular usb hub and insert a zip drive with the content you want and then transfer it from the zip drive to kodi by using file explorer you can download from the play store. With the hub you can also install a keyboard/track pad combo like the logitect k400 keyboard (ususally on sale for 19.99) and its makes using/navigating kodi or the nexus player much easier.

I disagree about kodi being garbage. It's awesome software. If you were Genesis...make sure to clear cache and sources from within genesis tools section. Autoplay does work but you need to configure the streams you prefer from the information section of genesis. Also make sure you're on version 5.1.4. Some of rhe other great add-ons: phoenix, primewire/one channel, SALTS, projectfreetv, navix, movie night, movied hd, ...etc. With a decent connection all of these addons feature great content and have search functiions to find whatever you're looking for. STAY away from torrents. They provide way less anonymity than you might think...

Don't despair. I've some good news for you. Unlike cable companies, which you are obliged to subscribe to if you live in a certain area (Laissez-faire at its best), no one has to use the POS called Kodi. And no one will do bad things to you if you don't. You always have the choice of forking out a hundred bucks or more a month for the rubbish that would stream flawlessly on your tv (Freedom at its best - where you consistently get 15 minutes of consumerism-driven "information" out of a 25-minute program) if you can't stand the minimal work one has to put in for the stuff you get for free and whose content you totally control.
I'm sure the people who designed the POS (your opinion) did the best they could, and do not get justly compensated for it. What you said don't sound really appreciative of it to me.
Maybe can help
I using this ROM pure nexus 6.0 from dhacker29 http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-player/development/rom-pure-nexus-t3260232
As well after all done, download kodi from the play store and them follow this threat http://www.geek.com.do/mejores-fuentes-repositorios-kodi-xbmc/ ah sorry its is Spanish, use Google translate
I just did the whole Kodi install thing with the repos that the kids are selling these days on Ebay for like $80+ installed on a Amazon Firestick. Pretty funny that they are making money off of doing that. I only found out about that from my friend who actually paid $$ for one of those and decided to research it and attempted to do it on my NPlayer.
I agree with @ninerpride somewhat. While I don't think it's Kodi that is "garbage", its more the streams fault. It DOES get annoying attempting to go down the list to try and find a stream that actually plays. @graphdarnell, I concur with you, my Time Warner cable bill is over $100 USD and I get nothing for it. I'm always looking for ways to cut the cord and get out of this because the bill just keeps going up every year.
I heard that Genesis, etc is no longer being supported because the DEV found out about the "hacker kids" selling his work on Ebay pre-loaded onto those Amazon Firesticks. Anyone hear the same? Someone suggested to instead install "SALTS" but while it's much better, it's still annoying trying to find a stream that works.
Using the BEAST build installed from AresWizard.cok.uk/zip and it's been great so far. Phoenix based and most of the content is decent. Live TV is pretty good. Best I've used for KODI so far
Hi guys,
I am facing a lot of difficulty in trying to mount a samba share on the shield TV (16gb model).
It's freshly rooted with busybox, supersu, se linux mode and patched cifs manager.
No matter how I try to mount it, via terminal or via the patched CIFSManager, I always get an error saying "cannot access a needed shared library".
su --mount-master -c busybox mount -o username=shaf,password=android,rw,noperm,iocharset=utf8 -t cifs //192.168.1.1/android /data/media/0/android
The network folder is perfectly accessible through ES File explorer & I've even tried formatting the network drive as ext4.
I have checked in proc/ and the cifs files are there but I'm not sure if I need to load a cifs.ko kernel module, I assumed it was loaded.
I would be very grateful if someone could help me out here and point me in the right direction.

hey guys. im not much on networking. trying to figure it all out myself, but i found this app awhile back called servers ultimate pro.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.icecoldapps.serversultimatepro
they do have a 7 day trial to test things out but through this app i was able to create a smb/cifs server with windows 10 being able to map it as a network drive. At least on windows 10, i had to google and eventually found a few registry tweaks to make windows actually see it.
Currently my issue now is speed transfer isnt all that fast. its usable for my needs, but i average about 5-10MBps during transfer with an external usb 3.0 HDD plugged into the shield tv, transferring files over the network between my windows 10 machine. That is an issue im currently working on fixing, but i was at least able to create a working server with this app. The authors have a forum on xda as well but its looking more and more that it might become abandoned (servers ultimate pro) as the author(s) havent been responding to forum questions or even emails.
either way, just thought id let you guys know.

Ive actually tried that one amongst others, was one of the best tested at the time, even had, if i recall correctly, tasker support which is a must, but my shield for all intense and purposes, will be free of the google eco system, hence why i wont/cant have apps that require license check.......i dont like the artificial dependancy on other apps/services such as google services
On the lookout, hopefully, for an open source alternative with good tasker support.

Hey thanks buddy,
I think I had a look at that before but ignored it temporarily as I wanted to fix mounting samba shares first thereafter focus on making a script so it mounts automatically on boot but I don't see a problem with skipping straight to using the script.
Unfortunately, I won't be able to check/test the firetv script until next weekend, what problem do you have when trying to use the script?
I'm tempted to install the full android version with a tv style home launcher and check if I can connect to samba shares as this is driving me nuts lol.
Check out the thread 'nVidia Shield Android TV - Post your home screen' and see andrewthecoder's post, need to ask him if he's able to mount remote samba shares.
BTW guys, I think there's some confusion, my intention is to use the shield tv as a client, not to host a samba server lol.

Yeah sorry, i did actually realise you were talking client side, i went slightly offtopic with server side talk
Honestly, i didnt really put much effort into it, just quickly tried to see if it worked first, second, third try before giving up, waiting on more info on the xda thread, or maybe even an app to do this more simply, or an alternative working method.........im playing the, keep my ears to the ground, waiting game
Plus, ive not found any confirmation on which android samba servers are confirmed working for this kind of mount, so i have the worry, that the script may work, but fail on a non standard samba server.........again, waiting on confirmation on what works and hopefully a guide.........looking it up every now and again

Haha no worries man, yes I'll try messing with that coming this Friday evening, did you use script manager, SManager?
Ah damn I did not even know there's different types of samba servers! ?
Lool I'm the complete opposite, too impatient to wait, that's why I'm really considering installing the full android version. It would be such a delight to have the dreamcast and gamecube roms running of the NAS drive as well as 4K files in the future.

For mine I found that the utf8 bit was throwing it off. I removed that and added sec=ntlm and that worked for me. The only downside is apps can read from it but can't seem to write to it. Give it a go and see if that helps though.

Thanks for that luvley bit of insight, and the thread maker for starting the subject in the first place........hopefully, a write solution will show up and find its way to this "network storage mounting" thread..........
Theres another potential, i stress, potential avenue to mount local filesystems beyond jellybean...sshfs
Easysshfs
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ru.nsu.bobrofon.easysshfs&hl=en
https://bitbucket.org/bobrofon/easysshfs
Ive attempted to test this, sshelper server on the shield, easysshfs on the tablet with no success.......im thinking theres kernel modules involved( fuse.ko) , mind you im no expert. (Easysshfs logs makes mention of "fuse.sshfs is not in proc/mounts")
If modules are indeed involved then this is not an ideal solution (unless kernel moduling becomes universally compatible somehow), as i'd prefer any future purchases of stock android to have the ability natively, minimum, instead of waiting and hoping someone can release a solution
Sshelper
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.arachnoid.sshelper&hl=en
http://arachnoid.com/android/SSHelper/
Edit
Well holy moly, i got it working, i just randomly decided to put admin as username instead of leaving it blank and hey presto....mounted.........quickly tested a file manager without network support, opensource "amaze", to browse and play a video on my tab from a usb stick on my shield........excellent
So for those interested, a simple two app install plus configuring (username, pass, mount to, mount from) and you have network mounting.....on lollipop.........excellent

Yes I am sharing a "server of sorts" (Desktop in den with video and audio files stored) with multiple setups .
Shield with Kodi
Laptop with Kodi
Laptop with VLC
Samsung Tablets with Kodi or VLC
Sharing permissions need to be set to allow "Everyone" read/write access on server
I use a "MOVIE" folder, a "TV SHOW" folder, and a "MUSIC" folder then add source under files in KODI,select scraper for tv,movie,or music and it will also add covers and details to list. Kodi will detect files and add a MOVIE ,TV SHOWS, and MUSIC tab on home screen after scanning. I also set "scan on startup" " in systems settings so I only need to reboot to update libraries.
https://kodi.tv/ use wiki if you get lost
Hope this helps

It appears you are sharing your media from a server to the Shield. I am trying to use my Shield with Kodi as the server. I have an external drive attached by USB to the Shield and need to connect two other computers to it. I did this previously with OpenELEC and Xbian, but I can't get them to recognize the Shield/Kodi on the network like I'm used to. Any assistance would be great. Thanks!
I should probably mention that I am not rooted and would like to not root my Shield so I can get further updates rolled out by NVidia. That's kind of the problem.
I'm trying to run a Samba server on the NVidia Shield without root that has read/write access to external storage (external hard drive).
So far, I've been able to get FTP servers running on it, but nothing allows access to my external storage. I'd much prefer SMB to FTP though.
Any thoughts or suggestions?
AFAIK it is not possible to run a Samba server on Android without root since SMB uses port numbers < 1024.
Rather than attach my external drive directly to the NVidia Shield, I attached it to the router and have all my computers (Linux and Windows boxes) and the Shield connect to the shared drive and all folders. That works great!

Does this app need root access? I saw this app yesterday and was going to try it.
It's been about three weeks since I got my Shield TV. Everything's running as expected except Kodi.
There hasn't been a single day where I used it without crashing for once - more like freezing I had to force stop. But I force stop Kodi once and if it freezes the second time, I have to restart the whole system since force stop is not available...
Bottomline is that Kodi is glitchy af when played around via Nvidia Shiled android TV. Am I the only one with this opinion?
I play with Lodi a little but always go back to Plex. Plex is awesome especially with the plug in called SS-Plex
Sent from my LG-H810 using Tapatalk
I haven't had any problems running Kodi on my Shield TV.
My guess would be that it's not Kodi per se that is causing the freezes and the reboots.. It's likely one of the addons you installed that is the culprit.
Kodi takes a lot of unwarranted crap for 3rd party addons that are not officially supported by them that causes problems for the end user. If all the addons are officially support by the Kodi team then I would goto their site and describe your problem... If not, then start by removing them one at a time to see if the problems persist.
Also, Are you rooted ? Using custom rom ? Using alpha v17 of Kodi ?.. Hard to offer more advise w/o more info.
You might try a different version of Kodi, I am running 16 with no problems.
Also you can install SPMC as another install of "Kodi", they co-exist without any problems. So you will have two installs to play with, try different setups.
The person who is developing SPMC, uses a NSTV for the development.
SPMC is much better
I agree with burkett375. SPMC is much better. It's actually created by the lead Kodi android developer that has left Kodi. It's more optimized for Android Tv' devices and the latest version 16.2 has integrated voice search for SPMC. http://spmc.semperpax.com/
In general with KODI / SPMC you need to clear you cache and purge packages. Uninstall any addons or repos that not longer work to keep your system clean. I hear some people have issues with kodi downloaded directly from the playstore so it may be a good idea to download from the website and transfer it to your device.
First thing I did when I got my shield was to upgrade the Kodi( I believe it was 15 version at the time) , this was prior to the shield update.
I then used the Chris B wizard the beast ..check it out on youtube and I have not looked back, it is very smooth and has never crashed for me...hope it helps
Tool to clear cache and purge packages;

Interesting... I use Kodi pretty much everyday, on many different devices (Windows, Samsung Android tablet, kid's amazon fire tablets, Shield TV, iMac, iPad, MX2 boxes...) and never have any single issue with it. Never force close, never crashes, always plays anything I throw at it. This is I think the most accomplished open source software that exists. I have used it for many years, went through many versions, and absolutely love that piece of software. Just saying "Kodi on Nvidia Shield Android TV sucks" without any detail of what you are trying to do with Kodi when it crashes is an insult to those developers who put so much of their personal time aside for us to freely download and enjoy their work.
Please take a look at this post from their website concerning non-official Kodi addons:
https://kodi.tv/the-piracy-box-sellers-and-youtube-promoters-are-killing-kodi/
For those who have mentioned SPMC, thank you, I never heard of it before!! Being developed by their original Android lead developer seems legit enough for me to test it out!
There's some strife with the lead developer of SPMC and the Kodi foundation. That's why he left but it works to our advantage as he's implementing things the regular version of kodi doesn't have. He left Kodi as he didn't like the direction it's going and those who follow the community know the deal.
As far as third party addons go for the most part they're fine just because "kodi" hasn't supported or endorsed them doesn't mean much. They are trying to protect themselves. We all know that the "kodi" endorsed addons don't really offer much. Furthermore TVaddons is not KODI there a development team ( that also have a fork of kodi TVMC) and there developers also create their own addons that you probably use but don't release it.
I experience the same problem with Force close not being available all the time when i need it. that pisses me off. also my sheild randomly exits back to the home screen whenever i am using the remote instead of controller.. I found a thread about a lot of others with the same problem.
anyone who's having problems with Kodi: step 1) go to settings from the main leanback launcher , and go to apps and delete KODI's data / cache etc... then after that delete the app. Go to Kodi's website, download their latest version of Jarvis , as an APK , transfer it using your prefered method ( I use ES File explorer and go to network > Remote manager, turn it on, and access the FTP server from a computer or whatever, send files that way) ... and open it in ES file explorer or whatever... then you should have a working KODI that is more stable. Add your addons you wish, you'll find it SHOULD be tons more stable. I've had problems with the KODI from the playstore.

Thanks, I'll try that. I have to agree with OP. Kodi Jarvis on Shield Marshmallow sucks! Scrolling is extremely choppy! Exiting Kodi takes FOREVER!
I came here to ask if anyone else has had issues with Kodi Jarvis, I'm glad I'm not the only one.
This looks pretty cool: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HVyNISBZvfA <---- No longer works!
But we shouldn't have to mod Kodi just to get it to work the way it should in the first place!
Kodi 16 is working perfectly on my NSTV, but I am on [ROM][Full Android Marshmallow for Shield TV][v.1.2]
It is slow to close after using for awhile, but no big deal, when you accept that as normal close behavior.
