I flash different roms all of the time, but i've never had this problem. After flashing back to CM7 on my Shift, I can receive texts but not send them.
I flashed a Sense rom and updated the PRL and Profile; nothing. Then I dialed *#*#4636#*#* for the SMSC update, tried both the 11-digit SMSC number and the 16-digit Hexadecimal PDU number, but every time I got the "update failed" message.
However, something must have worked, because despite nothing appearing to work, I can send and receive texts on the Sense rom. However, when I restore my CM7 backup, the problem resurfaces... even after attempting the SMSC updates in CM7.
Does anybody know what i'm doing wrong? I'd like to get my ability to send SMSs back on my AOSP rom.
I would try a Fresh Flash of the CM7 Rom you want to use. Instead of the CM7 Backup you already have. It may be corrupt, or just a bad Nand Backup.

Ah, well I was hoping there was a way to keep my settings and apps but so be it. I'll re-download the rom over WiFi tonight and post my results.
Well, after taking prboy's advice I re-download my CM7 rom (Sparksco's v1.1 stable version of CyanogenMod 7.2.0).
At first I did a full wipe before flashing, but ran into the same SMS issue as before. I ended up restoring my Sense rom with working SMS, then flashing CM7 over it without wiping, and now I am able to send and recieve texts like normal.
Only problem now is i'm missing a lot of functionality. For example, the home button doesn't work, I can't take a screenshot, the phone app for making calls is missing and I can't access the "CyanogenMod settings" from the settings menu.
Any ideas? Is it possible to backup/restore just the part of a rom that is responsible for SMS capabilities? In the meantime, i'll play with rebuilding caches and permissions.

Your pretty much worse off then when you started. Flashing a Rom on top of another Rom without wiping is not a good idea. Flashing a Non-Sense Rom over a Sense Rom without wiping is a really bad idea. You I'm sure have a lot of corrupt data. You can try this, Nand back to the Sense Rom. Update PRL / Profile. Then do a Full wipe and flash the CM7 Rom. You should have better results.

Of course, I mainly tried it as a test.
Playing with caches and permissions didn't help. I'll try what you suggested and a few other things.
Well keep us posted.
Well I fixed my issue, but not in the way I wanted.
I remembered I had a backup of an old CM7 nightly in my dropbox. I restored that, verified SMS worked, then wiped everything except /system and did a clean install of CM7.2.0. Everything is right again.
Out of curiosity, does anybody know where things like the profile, prl and SMSC number are stored on a phone? Is it even user-accessible from recovery or the OS?

Well glad you got it sorted. I believe you can use CDMA Workshop for that.

Glad to hear it's working ok now. You can view your prl info on aosp under about phone. Currently there is no recoveries that have the prl or SMSC locations encoded into them. But if you happen to find out what the locations are, let me know and I might be able to pull some prl image files and post them into a flashable to flash in recovery.
Me too...
Me too, I would like to know what is the solution. I am experiencing long sms message and mms sending issue on CM 7.2.0-RC2 for HTC EVO 4G. I know this is for EVO shift but this can be solution to the phone has the similar issue. If you know any thread related to this, please guide me to it's right thread, I'll be greatly appreciated.

Yes I have. It is working with or without it. I am wondering why there's SMSC numbers aren't there and it keeps failing update. What about MMS? MMS is not working...

I've been looking around to see if there is anything new on this front, but in both of the 2.1 roms I have flashed the ## codes don't work. Neither ##RTN#or ##DATA# work The reason I need to get to these tools is because I switch from phone to phone quite a bit, and flashed these roms while the phone was not active. Usually to reactivate my data, I just do ##DATA# (##3282#) and punch in my MSL and my data works fine. As it stands, I can't do that. I was having to flash my 1.5 nandroid backup, update my data settings, then flash back to 2.1. Unfortunately, my nandroid backup of 1.5 got wiped out when I accidentally hit backup on a 2.1 rom when I was trying to restore 1.5. So does anyone know a way to restore my data profile..? Thanks in advance.
PS: I know xparadigm (THANKS!) was going to post a stock 1.5 nandroid backup file. I'll use that for a short term fix.. But I'd still like to know what progress has been made getting ## radio codes working.
Thanks again!

Also interested in this... where'd you find the nandroid 1.5 backup?
I had done a nandroid backup of my own 1.5 rom. It just got overwritten.
I don't have a 1.5 stock either... sorry...
Nevermind gang! I looked at my SD contents and found that nandroid didnt overwrite my old backup.. it just timestamped a new one and wrote the newest one back. I just deleted the newest one and I'm back in business. I still wish my ## codes would work though.
##778# works on DamageControl's 2.1 ROM. I'm not sure if that's the same thing you're looking for, but it gave me access to a bunch of the data settings.
Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't DC's ROM based off a GSM leak? So if that is the case GSM doesn't have the same number codes as Sprint does because it's a different network and oh yea a different bandwidth all together. I think your number codes won't be fixed until the new 2.1 is pushed from Sprint and then the files that we need to fix all the 2.1 Rom's here are ported. I guess for now you're stuck going back and forth to get your data profile..

I'm stuck at the boot-screen of Deck's 1.2 rom, however, I can still access HBOOT and Clockwork Mod Recovery.
I don't see an explicit option, but is there a way I could access Apps or other data to save as a back-up?
I foolishly deleted my rom back-up, and last time I used Titanium Backup was a few weeks ago, so it's not a good option. Thanks!

As long as the .zip for the ROM doesn't wipe /data, you could reflash "Deck's 1.2 ROM hopefully fixing your issue and not losing your apps.

I just tried that and it didn't work either. This is maddening.
The last thing I remember doing was tinkering with the lockscreen settings in the advanced settings. I set up a rotary revamped lockscreen with Dolphin Browser HD as my custom application. I have Dolphin saved to SD too, but I don't see why such a small thing would cause constant bootloops.
It ran fine before 1.2 stable and messing with the lockscreen.

That's a good idea. I usually just use Titanium backup when I'm doing a full wipe or flashing a ROM with significant updates, but since I'd been using Deck's for a while and having no issues whatsoever really and just updating incrementally, I didn't think to backup in a while.
I had actually backed-up the ROM prior to flashing 1.2 stable, but I needed to delete it to make room to back up the newer version, and I didn't think it'd be a big deal since it was stable for a few boots. I guess I got too comfortable.
This is ridiculous, I didn't make any changes to the ROM or flash any new radios or anything of the sort that should cause a bootloop.
I do also use the Theme Manager MattedBlues theme but I've been using that for over a week or so with no issues, so I doubt that's the cause.
Oh well, thanks for the ideas though.

Actually thanks for the suggestions guys, I managed to dig up an older version of the rom saved on my downloads folder and flashed it and booted.
For some odd reason, an older release labeled as experimental works better than the 1.2 stable...
It's strange too because I looked around Deck's thread and no one else reported any problems similar to what I was having at all.
For all intents and purposes it appears to be very stable and functional for everyone BUT me
Thanks for the suggestions though. I guess I'll hold off on flashing any roms for a while or wait for a newer version and try flashing with a full wipe.
Cool glad you got her going.

Is it possible that you aren't truly doing a full wipe? Leftovers from a previous rom can stay behind in various partitions and cause problems.
I have found that installing a new rom from ROM Manager is not the best method - I prefer installing from recovery. I am far from an expert, but I'll explain what I know about using recovery to do a full wipe. Please forgive me if you already know how.
Full wipe from recovery:
Booting into recovery
You can boot into recovery through the ROM Manager app, or from the power menu of some roms, or you can get to it from hboot. To get into hboot: with the power off hold both the volume-down and the power button until the display lights up. Then use the volume key to move the selection to "recovery" and use the power button to select it.
Now that you're in recovery
If you use CWM (ClockworkMod) recovery, you'll need to choose 'wipe data/factory reset' (which formats the data and cache partitions), then from the 'mounts and storage' menu choose 'format system', then from the ‘advanced’ menu, select 'wipe dalvik'.
If you use 4EXT Recovery Touch, from the 'wipe | format' menu choose 'format all partitions' and 'wipe dalvik cache'.
The above steps perform a full wipe, without affecting your SD card.

If you've never installed a rom from recovery, the following might help:
Installing (flashing) a rom from recovery:
From CWM recovery:
Choose 'install zip from sdcard' then 'choose zip from sdcard', then navigate to and choose the zip file of the rom.
Once the rom finishes installing, if it doesn't reboot automatically then go back to the main menu and choose 'reboot system now'.
From 4EXT Recovery Touch:
Choose 'install from sdcard' then 'choose zip from sdcard', then navigate to and choose the zip file of the rom.
Once the rom finishes installing, if it doesn't reboot automatically then go back to the main menu and choose 'reboot now'.

Also, I wouldn't recommend restoring system settings (using Titanium Backup or other methods) when you are switching roms. System settings from a different rom can also cause all sorts of issues.
If doing a full wipe does not fix your problem, you may try flashing a different kernel. My personal favorite for Sense roms like Affinity is TDJ's demonspeed kernel, found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1214489.
Hope this helps!

Out of curiousity have you tried a 3rd party app, such as Handcent or GO SMS, to see if one of those works? I did manage to corrupt the stock messaging app once so that it couldn't send messages, but using a 3rd party app still worked fine.
This might help you to determine where the problem lies.

I'm not very experienced with misbehaving phones like yours, but if you've flashed different roms, radios, and kernels...
Assuming that you did all of these things properly, then I tend to think it is either a network issue where you live, or a problem with your phone's hardware.
Good luck!

haha thanx, I just think its weird that it started happening out of nowhere. it works fine when I restart the phone then starts doing it again in a short period of time
mine would do that from time to time, and it all but quit after i changed the radio image, but then again, i can't leave a rom on my phone longer than 2 days...lol as far as messaging and being able to send/receive, i had more problems out of mine completely stock than i ever did after a radio/rom flash
how did you fix the issues?
I think he said that flashing a different radio fixed it for him.

Ok so i was previously on CM 10.2 and it was a bit too bleeding edge for me so i decided to downgrade back to 10.1 only to find out theres a new RC, 10.1.3. So i tried to dirty flash 10.1.3 straight away in cwm knowing it was a bad idea but long story short , it didnt work and i somehow got LiquidSmmoth 2.9 installed.
Heres where the fun starts, ive used both SMSBackup And Restore and Sms Backup + to restore messages but they simply dont work. Im guessing it has something to do with going from 4.3(CM0 to 4.2.2(LS). Sms Backup and Restore just spits out an error as soon as i select the .xml and Sms Backup + backs up to my email and even restores it back onto the phone, but i open mesages and handcent, theres nothing there. Could it be that 4.3 has a different location for messages??
It seems im stuck using the CM 10.2 rom if i want to keep my messages. They are important and id rather not lose them. If you have any ideas i can try, please post. Id be very grateful.

SMS Backup+ backs up your SMS and MMS to your GMail, if you go to your gmail and check labels, look for SMS and they're all there (usually in groups of 100) and can be restored to another phone/ROM with the same program. Although it only restores SMS, not MMS (although they do remain saved to your gmail so you can still view them).
Ok so i mnagaed to get my messages across since no utility/app could do it. I did it manually using this post:

Basically copying the database file across roms seems to work so far. Not sure why some apps i tried were crashing but at least its working.
Hello everyone. I've tried really hard to DO NOT create this thread. As it happens I have used all I know (which isnt much) to try to fix this problem but got no success.
So I've got a S4 GT-I9505. I've recently decided to root it mainly because I wanted full External SD-card access to some apps. Here are some facts about my rooting:
- I used TWRP;
- I used SuperSU;
- I kept the stock ROM. I personally dont have anything to complain about it so I didnt install any custom ROMs.
- I had a problem with Knox afterwards, the phone was rebooting and freezing. I made a backup on Titanium and then uninstalled every Knox-related app.
- The system worked nicely for days.
Then I decided to clean some garbage that I knew was present in my device, like ghost folders and foster files and such.
- I installed SD-Maid and Clean Master.
- On the same day, I switched my SIM card because of some personal issues. I'm brazilian but now living in Deutschland. The change of SIM cards (if it matters) was as follows: bought the phone > inserted brazilian SIM > inserted deutsch SIM > inserted brazilian SIM (due to a personal problem) > back to deutsch SIM. I'm telling you this because I'm not sure of how relevant it is. Just trying to give as much info as possible.
- I cleaned some **** with SD-Maid AND Clean Master.
What happened next:
- WhatsApp was broken. I couldnt receive any media (voice recordings, videos, images, nothing at all).
- I tried re-installing the App
- I tried to restore my WhatsApp backup from Titanium. No success*.
- I tried to restore my backup from TWRD. No success.
- I tried to change WhatsApp folder (on data/media) permissions to r-r-r---- and then back to 00775. No success.
- I tried re-registering my phone to whatsapp network. No success.
- I tried deleting whatsapp folder on data/media (WhatsApp FAQ recomendation). Thats when WhatsApp stopped also SENDING media. I couldnt simply send or receive through the app.
- I tried re-creating the WhatsApp media folder on data. No success.
- I tried a factory reset followed by a TWRD backup restoration. WhatsApp was once again SENDING, but NOT RECEIVING media. When my phone finished booting and the launcher loaded, I was immediately prompted by a WhatsApp message saying something like "Conection failed! Please verify your phone number. WhatsApp can only be installed in one device per phone-number" even though everything else internet-related was working just fine.
(* when I say NO SUCCESS, I refer to the fact that WhatsApp still not receiving/sending media, not that I failed to implement that given fix)
Now, when I wiped my phone to factory defaults, I noticed that in TWRD prompt it said something like "Wiping Data, EXCEPT data/media". My knowledge of the subject isnt great but I think it might be something with this folder.
Any thoughts?
Thank you very much in advance!

- Backup the apps you want to backup with Titanium.
- Make a backup of Whatsapp from within the app.
- Wipe from TWRP recovery (I assume that's what you mean by TWRD). Use the option prepare for rom flash (don't know the excact words, but you understand when you see the option).
- Reflash the rom you are currently on with Odin (or flash a custom rom).
You can also just skip the wiping part and just flash the rom with Odin again. I always like to start from scratch if something goes wrong, but it should probably work without the wipe.
Then restore the apps you want to restore. Whatsapp should probably be working now.
You can spend many more hours finding a solution, but my guess is that SD-maid or Clean Master deleted something it should not have. Always be carefull with those kind of apps. I don't really like those apps because the benefit you get from them is limited.
GOT A FIX!
After 2 days of hitting my head on the wall with this, I came up with a solution.
My girlfriend has the exact same phone as me (though I think any rooted android with WhatsApp installed would do).
I entered her data/media/whatsapp folder and created all the folders that were missing on my own folder (deleted by CleanMaster just for being empty). Then I gave all the folders the exact same permissions (rwxrwx--x or 0775) as my girlfriend's device and voila! It's working perfectly!
Now just for future reference and to feed my curiosity: why does factory reset through TWRP do not also wipe data/media? If this folder were wiped, I would get a fresh WhatsApp install and the problem would have been gone sooner. I kinda dont understand the folders' structure in my phone. Sometimes it looks like I can get to the same very place using diferent paths (like /data/ OR /emulated/ OR /0/ OR /sdcard/).
Anyway, thanks people! Though I figured it all by myself, this forum still rocks!

Good that you found a solution.
It would be bad thing if the custom recovery would standard wipe data/media because that would wipe your entire internal sd. People that flash roms don't want that to happen. You can still wipe it from the recovery, it's just in a different place then the standard wiping.

So basically its just a matter of keeping your apps and app data? Not something system-damaging or system-related at all?
And thanks for your answer!

No your apps and data will be wiped. Basically every part that could interfere with a new rom is wiped. It's only the data on your internal storage that is kept. So apps (like Whatsapp) also write data to your internal storage and that won't get wiped.
/system
/data (excluded /data/media)
/cache
and a few more will be wiped.
(There are more parts that don't get wiped, but that are parts that neither an app or you will ever touch.)
Now the problem is back. I can't really understand what happened.
I rebooted my phone just to check if everything was OK and then to do a new backup in TWRP.
Checked WhatsApp and the problem was back. Then I went to see the files and some folders that I've just copied were gone! The WhatsApp main folder on data/media was still there, but some subfolders were simply missing. I also noticed that my copy of that folder on my External SD-card was also gone! Like WTH?!
Any help will be much appreciated.
P.S.: and to my happiness, copying the files once again (as I've done before) simply doesnt work. This is driving me crazy, seriously.
this happened to me once, and wasn't whatsapp only, the reason whatsapp wasn't being able to receive/send media files was because it somehow could not access the internal storage.. same with all my other apps, it happened when restoring a full rom backup with CWM.. and the only way i managed to fix it was to re-flash the stock rom with odin

Not even a factory reset will do?
How do I find a stock ROM from Samsung (with 4.4.2) compatible with my S4 GT-I9505? Also: should I also wipe everything or simply flash the rom without doing anything else?
Now that you said, I also noticed that one of my favorite games (Mushroom Wars) has also stopped working. Might be that you're right!

Do as I suggested. Start from a blank sheet and stay away from those rom cleaners for now.
You could just take a clean custom rom, then you don't have to worry about deleting those knox stuff and rerooting again.

i honestly didn't attempt a factory reset because i wanted to keep all my stuff, so i just flashed the stock rom on odin and everything worked out fine, was the only way i was able to fix it

By doing this I'll have to reroot, right? Do you think it is a problem if I recover my backup from TWRP after flashing the stock rom?
Dont wanna go through the configs and app installing all over again.

you don't need to re-configure or recover a backup, if you flash the same stock on odin as you already had running, without wiping, it should work right away, without any issues and without any need for a wipe or a restore, you will have to re-root though, yes.

This is for switzerland, isnt it? A Brazilian version would be most welcome! I'm currently downloading one from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2265477

Sure! Thank you for your help!
Just a side note: while downloading the stock rom, I found this and installed the given app (Folder Mount) just to check. As soon as I opened it, it pop'd a message saying that he identified a crucial problem with my /bin/sdcardwhatever file. So yes, I'm confident that your solution will be the one to fix my problem. Let's see...
Also thanks for Lennyz1988 for your suggestion. Your fix seems a little bit... harder?... for me, but if this one doesnt work I'll try yours and post the results. BTW, where do I find a clean custom ROM? Thank you!

I just realized both solutions are the same, LOL.
ODIN just finished flashing the stock rom. Will update soon with the preliminary results.
Apparently it did NOT work. Not completely at least.
WhatsApp is now once again making voice recordings and receiving them as well, but is not handling any other kind of media. Mushroom Wars (the game I talked about earlier) is also not loading.
The system looks just it was before, only without root (I know that was expected).
Don't know what to do now.
Just one more question: how much of a problem is it restoring a backup using TWRP? I mean, in a scenario in which I get this problem fixed, I couldnt simply restore any backup due to the possibility of screwing my internal storage thing all over again?
