Epic CM Team Google+: Vote to express your interests in future development.
Your votes and feedback would be helpful in determining our team's future development directions. For example, we have already learned that Epic 4G owners are not very interested in Galaxy Nexus and really would like their next phone to have a hardware keyboard. While we will read responses here on XDA, it would be more helpful to have +1 votes and responses in the Google+ thread. Thanks!

Ok. I'll bite.
I'll go answer your questions on google+, but...
The short answer is, I will use my epic, with whatever the latest, greatest rom that is available until it physically fails to operate any longer. Then I will buy whatever phone is available on Sprint that best does whatever I need it to do at the time.
I guess I'm planning on being around as long as possible. Hopefully my otterbox commuter case will be worth the investment.

Definitely holding out on getting a new device. Sprint is really ticking me off and I don't want to get a kickass device paired with crappy service. Turns a smartphone into a dumbphone. Thx for all the great roms. Feels like I have a new device already.

Back in? CM9 never did ship Voodoo color, and most of us dislike it. We will need to reassess this position after the crespo kernel merge since crespo kernel does have it. It currently causes the ugly-by-default gradient issue on crespo, the very reason why we didn't include it in CM9 kernel.
Ugh

I don't want to go back and hunt down the thread I read on Voodoo Color and Epic CM9.. maybe it was just talk on IRC. Moving right on.
That's good that this will be brought up again with the Crespo Merge. I currently do not see the gradient issue you're talking about.. I know what Gradient is, and I notice Gradient on Settings' Background.. not sure to what you're referring exactly to..
By "Most of Us" are you referring to the Epic CM Team? While it isn't much to go by, currently, the poll is at a win on putting Voodoo Color into future Epic CM9 Builds.. If you read the discussion, we even talked about ways to incorporate it without complaints from those who don't like it.
Green Tint has never been noticeable to me until I started using Voodoo Color. I kid you not, on Beta 1, I used Voodoo Color, and it was beautiful. I updated to Beta 2 with Stock Kernel, opened XDA app, and the white/grey background looked a disgusting green tint. I was disappointed. To me, its more noticeable than ever. If bad from Voodoo color exists, the good seems to outweigh it with deep, good coloring.
Hey wtogami, are there plans to integrate voodoo sound into the stock cm9 kernel (afaik it isn't already there)? Also, I read that you said after the merge we may be able to use nexus modems. Does that mean that we will be able to use their ril libs and framework as well instead of samsungril? It would make porting sense exponentially easier. Samsungril is a PITA to work with.

Yeah, I think so too. The kernel will allow all those things to be fixed, but some things will take longer to develop than others. Like even though the kernel doesn't automatically fix EH17 bugs or turn into EXT4, I'm positive you'll see kernels that fix EH17 bugs as well as EXT4 converted.
My question? Does this mean wimax in cm7 or is that still samsungs private code?

GPS is amazing on CM7. And this is the "official" source for the Epic from Samsung.
Does this give us the ability to get tv-out working?

Then don't.
If someone could please clarify the following questions:
1) What exactly does the Epic 4g need that it does not have to run the latest cyanogenmod with full functionality?
2) I assume this source code release does not directly help in implementing cm7. Is that correct?
3) What are the prospects of the Epic 4g being a fully supported cm7 phone sometime in 2012?
Thanks

Okey doke, I've got you.
1) Well for the longest while we've needed an AOSP kernel based on our kernel which we didn't have source to. A GB kernel with source which of course we had gotten due to Mkasick, Rodderik, Jt countless others. As well as a close to official build of CM7(7.1) which is also greatly made possible due to Decad3nce and Jt, and countless others. We're closer because they were coding in the dark kernel wise before now. And Samsung released their official build as well. (Damn you Samsung)
2) It does help, because they now have a basis to work off of to try to get an AOSP kernel which may take time, but we've some of the most talented Rom developers and kernel developers working together to do this.
3) It could happen befoe 2012, there isn't an eta we can give for something such as this when the catalyst we've needed for months has finally been given to us.
I hope I was of some help. If any more questions ask me I'll gladly answer.
Sent from my Epic 4G
Wait, wait, wait, we never covered the essential question:
Can the source enable my phone to make coffee?
It does: have a cute name called source
It does: have the ability to be downloaded, its available right now.
It does: happen to be something everyone's always asked for.
It does not: help you walk your dog.
It does not: improve your Call of Duty skills
It does not: like the fact that I'm making jokes about it.
K'done .

I see I don't understand the basics of what's going on here.
We've had Froyo source for months, but that was not AOSP?
Or have Samsung/Sprint released something with Gingerbread that they did not release with the Froyo source?
Am I understanding correctly that there are now no remaining structural obstacles and implementing CM is just a matter of development time?
Another question: What is the advantage of cyanogenmod over the stock and custom roms already available for the Epic 4g, meaning what will be better once CM7 is running?

Froyo was AOSP
No, Froyo source came out late with GB was "right around the corner". So development stopped waiting for GB source.

CM7 will not have TW since uh duh it would ruin the whole "AOSP" aspect, and it is an alpha build, its not going to be perfect, yet.

CM9 and MIUI v4 will be it basically. They are already pure AOSP ROMs. What is more custom than that? There are a multitude of kernels to try with them and themes are being built on a regular basis now. Not sure what you are looking for. The only custom ROMs the epic had are based on Touchwiz and we are not getting official ICS to base ROMs off of.
The problem with basing on ICS is that you need to edit the source code and cm9 is already optimized enough. If you havent noticed, cm9 is a custom rom and IMHO the best one. It doesn't have touchwiz or bloatware or ciq so it doesnt need to be optimized, fixed, or cleaned.

he already have a port from the NS4G, its ICS but not official i guess, still works haha.
Mods,
This thread title either needs to be changed or moved to the Nexus forum.
1. Misleading thread title
2. We already HAVE a port of ICS (actually 4)
3. The nexus s leaks were fine
4. Old news
5. Why does it matter when we have aokp and cm9...
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA
OP, or mods, please change the misleading title.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA
Wow smh at you guys.
yes, the title was extremely misleading (kudos OP), however that is big news.
Yeah we have cm9 and aokp but those are buggy as hell because they don't really have an outline to follow.
Now what this means is, since they're finally getting official ics (even though it leaked already, but I'm guessing marcusant doesn't have a nexus s because that leak was kinda like eb13, where **** worked but it clearly wasn't ready for primetime.) we will probably get official ics on the other galaxy s phones since they're all the same, which will make it a lot easier for cm9 to get developed.
Remember what happened with cm7 about a day after samsung finally released ei22 I think? Idr the build but ii do remember cm7 getting a HUGE jumpstart after we got an official gb w/ source.
You guys need to stop jumping down peoples throats when they're sharing news in the GENERAL forum. You people ***** about this but not when there's a thread from a previous developer that's not even on sprint anymmore talking about that yay (although I have no problem with that thread either, it just seems some of your priorities need to be worked out.)
No one was jumping down anyone's throats, we just don't like misleading titles and want it changed or moved or deleted.
If you don't agree, suppose I post a new thread called "Epic to get official OTA tomorrow" and then post "Just kidding! Gotcha!" in the text. Wouldn't like that would you? That's how this came off sounding. The title should be "Official ICS Announced for the Nexus."
Just drop it, everybody make mistakes and I doubt the OP made a mistake. He/she was thinking about the community as a whole and how having a device similar to ours will be getting ICS officially. If the title was so misleading why the opinion of about why it's misleading need to be known. A simple report to a mod or admin would have had this issue solved without the unneccessary comments from those involved

More Bloatware has been removed and battery life has been slightly improved. Comes with a custom kernel and New Boot animation. This is our first ROM so show some love Android Lovers. We Know that. We've already researched the ACS Syndiacte Status Notes. But not all builds run properly on One's device. Actually some updates can screw up the phone. We built off the most stable update, And tweaked the performace, thats all. I know alot of people are looking for the next big thing. But there are some that are satisfied with what they have. This is only tweaks to what they have to make it run more smoothly. We are making ROMS now with the latest builds.

Project butter is the main thing if I'm not mistaken. This is basically ICS but built much, much better in terms of code, fluidness, and speed. Correct me if I'm wrong. There are a few other nice additions but nothing major. Things like expandable notifications, new lockscreen animation, ect.

Something I've been wondering, if any devs working on the JB port can comment, is to what degree the effects of Project Butter actually show up on our Epics? Is it a significantly noticeable difference or do our hardware limitations still show up markedly?

Well on the half/not-working non source port, it ran pretty damn smooth, noticeably so. Other than that, when it comes along I think it'd be better for people to try it themselves.

a write up
here is an article all about the new stuff:

Google now is sweet I renamed all my contacts so I can say dirty stuff to it
Google Now, the improvement to make Android more fluid (mostly for newer devices), and Hi-res contacts are the major ones for me.

Jeez. They just got the damn source code today. The first thing they're doing is working on it for all of us and you're already asking for an eta? I could understand asking about the current situation, or progress, but an eta? Go sit in the corner. You're in time out now.

Don't think he meant it as an ETA probably more of an general guestimate. Like when do you guys think the next "insert item here" will be out?

Well, I've heard rumors of within a month. But again, they only "just" got their hands on the source. And I heard xbox saying we're waiting on some proprietary files to be released from the Nexus S that we'll need yet.

I'm posting from JB on my xoom from teamEOS. Since it's on this device, hopefully it's not too long for cm10. Until viperx came onto HTC One X, I had all 3 of my Android devices running cm9. Now it's spread, cm9 was on xoom until JBs installation today, slimICS on SGS and of course viperx on HTC One X. My wife won't let me root her phones (that sounds so wrong as at least use Aussies use the term root as slang for sex.

I agree with you about the ETAs, but I think you misunderstood this circumstance... He is not asking the developers, he is asking everyone in this thread. It can't really be called an ETA, because estimations require some knowledge of the activity behind the scenes (somewhat like an educated guess) - if anything, he is asking for a WSTA - a Wild Speculation of Time of Arrival
With that said, there is even less point in asking for that than for an ETA, because all of our answers are unfounded guesses - but at least he isn't directly bothering the developers (they don't have any obligation to respond in this thread, so it's their choice if they're bothered by it, unlike in their threads)
