While in the middle of reading an email (using the gmail app) and downloading an update to a marketplace app (Go SMS Pro), my phone suddenly froze and a minute later, shut off and hasnt come back on again. I switched batteries, tried different chargers, nothing works. no screen glow, no charging orange light (battery was at about 80% when it died), nothing. the water damage indicator is white.
Plugged it into my PC and it recognized a USB device but could recognize what type etc and asked for drivers.
The phone had original software (2.3.4) and wasnt rooted or anything. Just a month out of the warranty period. Tmo threw their hands up and offered me their off contract pricing for new phones . is it time to start looking for a replacement? Any hope?

that is the weirdest thing ive ever heard. can you get into the bootloader? (vol down + power)
the phone behaves like there is no battery in there. And I've swapped out the battery (wife has same phone), and even my battery works in her phone.

but can you get into the bootloader? its not completely dead since your computer detects something when its plugged in so it could just be a messed up rom that kicked you into a different mode..
if you can still get into the bootloader you should technically be able to reinstall the stock image or even root and flash a recovery tool

Time to get a new phone if it won't even power on with a full battery. I hear the sensation is a good phone.

You can make sure the connectors are clean for the phone, or it may be your power button, I have seen many people talking about dying out power buttons, there is a fix, I think I will have to look it up, it was on these forms.
---------- Post added at 10:48 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:38 PM ----------
Read up again, plugging it in and holding down either the home or the trackpad button for 20 seconds could work. Also found this post below.
jjbadd385:
If your power button is broken, you can seperate the black rubber from the chrome bezel, right at the power button, you will see a silver dot with a silver ring around it,,which is the flex ribbon, and very, very small. Anyway, take a piece of aluminum foil and twist it up, now touch the silver dot and ring simultaneously, for like 1 or 2 seconds, and it will come on, if your flex ribbon is not broken. I have an extra. Mt4g with a broken power button, and I power it on this way a few times a day...takes about 10 seconds.

Here is a good thread if it is your power button.

Sorry if none of this works :/
I've seen this happen already with a different phone, I went as far as sending it out to be repaired and the service department said the processor shorted out and needed to either buy new or a refurbished one. It will still show on a computer because there is power to it but due to the processor going bad it won't do anything from that point. I would go with the mt4g slide it has great reviews and a solid forum here.

Yesterday I FINALLY received my new G2. Playing around with the device I was very excited at It's functionality and performance. I did get unlucky enough to receive one with loose hinges, but they didn't seem that big of a deal to me.
However, after owning the device for only 8 hours, I tried a little angry birds and setup Galactic Core live wallpaper. I flipped the keyboard open and noticed that the wallpaper disappeared to a black background. Hmmm, fairly odd. Closed the keyboard and still bring it back. Attempted to re-apply the wallpaper which didn't work either. I was getting ready to power cycle the phone when it turned itself off.
Tried pressing the power button and opening the keyboard. Nothing. Tried taking the battery out and then attempting to power the device on. Nothing. Tried plugging in the power cable to both the AC charger and a USB port on my PC. Nothing. Tried swapping the battery with the demo model at work. Nothing. I don't get any sound, vibration or even so much as a charging LED out of the device. I've pressed about every button and the device is non responsive.
So with all of the G2 bugs of this nature I am reading about (People with the same issue except theirs turns back on after a battery pull), is there a trick I'm unaware of or is this thing DOA?
DOA means dead on arrival, yours clearly wasn't dead when you received it , just call tmo and have them exchange you for another one.

Gee, thank you for the sarcastic response.
This is probably a dumb question, but does the battery have any charge left in it? You could try plugging into the charger, waiting a couple of minutes, then trying to turn it on. Past that, I think the only solution would be to have TMO send you a new one.
If you can't even get the charging LED to come up then I would gather you've got a dud phone (hey, it can happen). I assume you'd let it sit there in attempts to charge the phone?
Just for curiosity's sake, have you tried plugging it into a computer?
If all else fails, just go back to T-Mo and exchange it for another one.
Maybe try holding volume down and power for the recovery mode?

Hey everyone,
Problem:
Last night I was using my phone and it was on around 50% battery. I put it in my pocket and a few minutes later when i checked it, it appeared to be dead. It would not turn on when i tried to hold in the power button. I rooted my phone over a year ago and haven't updated it in a long time. It seems to have bricked out of the blue and it wont turn on.
Attempt to troubleshoot:
I tried removing the battery and putting it back in. When i do this the Samsung logo briefly appears with the normal unlocked screen. After about 2-3 seconds I notice a tiny glitch across the screen and then it goes black and there is nothing. I put my friends battery from his S4 in my phone and the same exact thing happens.
I also called AT&T and my warranty expired for this phone a few weeks ago. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this?
Thanks,
-Alex
Does it do the same thing if you try to boot it into Odin mode? Meaning power plus the volume button.

Yeah I tried doing that as well. It only works for about a second. When I remove and reinsert the battery I have about a three second window before I get the black screen again. I removed the battery and right when I put it in I held the volume up, home, and then power keys. I see the screen start to change a split second before it goes back to black.
Does anyone know what could be causing this or what my options are? I am just over the one year warranty so i can not return the phone. I would like to troubleshoot it if possible, but I'm not quite sure where to start since I can't turn the phone on. I am leaving for vacation tomorrow night and I really need to have a phone. I have been trying to troubleshoot it since yesterday and I have had no luck.
Did you plug it in to AC and see if it runs--try that without battery also--

I assume by AC you mean an alternating current (standard) outlet? I plugged it into the wall charger with and without the battery and it did not turn on.

Okay. Is there anywhere I can do to diagnose the hardware or I could take my phone to get it fixed and diagnosed? This is my first time having a phone stop working so I am not sure what to do since my warranty just expired last month.
One last thought before I suggest giving up. Is it possible the phone IS turning on (and staying on) but the screen is just not remaining on? Troubleshoot by turning on the phone until you briefly see the screen, then give it time to finish booting (if it really is on), then plug into PC to see if it is recognized by the computer? If so, then it's a screen issue.
Or, could it be the power button is wonky and is turning off the unit right after turn on?
I'm perplexed....

If there is a CPR (Cell Phone Repair) near you, that would be my recommendation.

Neither my desktop nor my laptop can detect the phone. The only time the phone turns on is when i take out the battery and put it back in. It comes on for like 2-3 seconds with the samsung logo and then shuts off. I did that while it was connected to my computer and the computer didn't recognize it.
How could I determine if the issue is the power button before taking it to a CPR?

Not sure about access to button with back off or how to take apart. But, you could try to depress button and try to spray some electronic cleaner in it with the nozzle tube provided. Radio Shack has it if Best Buy doesn't. I doubt if that will work though. But, the spray comes in handy for me on occasion.

I took off the cover, and then removed the screws to take off the back of the phone. I held the power button from the inside of the phone and it still did not turn on. I used my friends battery that was at 80% charge to test it so it isn't the battery. I found this tutorial online for removing the power button which could solve the problem (assuming it is the power button) but i'm not sure if it is the power switch. Also the tutorial is for the S3 and not the S4. Not sure if I should attempt this or if there is anything else I should try.
I'd wait a bit and see if anyone that has actually replaced one chimes in. You could in meantime try the spray. Make sure it is electronics spray so it won't damage or gum up anything--like you said it may not even be the buttton--
good luck
At this point my thought is the button isn't the issue. The button itself seems to be working based on your description.
I'd say Cell Phone Repair or a similar place is your best shot. Good luck. Let us know how it works out!
So yesterday my phone worked great. I work outside for the most part. It rained its ass off. Phone did not get wet that im aware of. no water drops or anything on it. Had it inside my waterproof jacket. This was early morning..10am or so. I get home from work around 7pm. Phone still works. battery is getting very low though. At 8pm phone reboots..which it randomly does sometimes. I set it down, come back to it awhile later and realize it never came back on. Figured the battery was completely drained past 5%. plugged it into stock charger (not stock cable though but a highend cable still). Phone wouldnt boot up or power on or even show any signs of life. Tried other cables, charges, USB ports on computer, even car charger. Nothing. Set it on charge over night. Still not even a LED blink. Set it on car charger all day while at work. Not even a blink. I took it apart (taken many phones apart in my time haha) disconnected battery and plugged it in...nothing. tried power/volume down, power/volume up, all 3 buttons. held all button combos for over a minute. Still nothing at all. I have a new battery on order that I can slap in there and see if the battery is just completely shot but does anyone else have any ideas on what i can do to get it up and running again? Already had to buy a new phone G3! because i HAVe to have one for work. So i want to get this one working again so i have a backup in case this ever happens again.
Thanks for any and all help

tried to enter download mode, recovery mode, every mode i know of. with no luck.
and forgot to mention. when plugged into computer the computer does not notice anything has been plugged in at all. no sound at all. nothing under device manager
well i got the new battery in. didnt work. still no power at all. anyone else know of something i can try? i know the screen isnt dead because it would still give out sound when turned on or vibrate. but that doesnt happen either. is there some other thing i could test? how would i test the motherboard? power button?
This sounds like exactly what happened to my phone about two weeks ago. Phone was randomly rebooting one morning in strange intervals. Once or twice an hour at first, then more often as the day progressed. By the end of the day the phone wouldn't even turn on anymore. I had thought it was the battery as well but after bringing in to an electronics repair shop, it was diagnosed as a bad motherboard and the guy quoted me $130 to replace it. Considering you can buy the D800 off contract brand new for about $220 off the internet, I declined. I'm still really upset about it. I had already had it replaced by AT&T while it was under warranty. However, now my warranty has expired. I really liked the phone overall but now I'm not so sure I trust LG's hardware.
I'm using my brother's old iphone 4 now and it drives me flippin' crazy. I want to get a new phone as soon as possible but I don't know what to get. I'm so torn on the whole issue. Was thinking about the S6 but I've had bad luck with samsung in the past as well. I'd get a newer iphone but ios is so lame compared to Android. I hope you find a better solution than I did. :crying:

Hi guys,
My Nexus 7 (2012) turned off(not properly) when the battery level was low and won't power on. I tried a battery from a working tablet and tested my battery in another tablet. It seems like the issue is somewhere else.
These are the things I tried:
- leave it for a couple of hours charging (no battery sign at all)
- hold the power button with/without the volume levels while it being both connected and disconnected.
- tested my battery in another tabled and put a fully charged battery from another tablet
- made sure that the battery is connected
There was one more thing I tried - to press the Power button with no battery inside but the tablet being connected to a laptop via the USB cable. One could hear something like a boot noise coming from the tablet (doesn't happen when the battery is inside)
In December, 2015 I installed a Custom ROM with android 5.1.1 which I found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-7/development/android-6-aosp-grouper-t3268172/ (the thread was renamed and is now about the Android 6 update) The tablet worked fine for these 3 months but one day when I was checking my email it went off and won't respond to any actions.
Could you please help me to fix it? I'm just not ready to give up on this tablet. Thanks!
Both you and i, same model, essentially, the same circumstances. I also tried every method you mentioned as well. Even down to the flashing of a rom. Same results. I even tried "jump starting" the battery. Not wanting to give up on it. It sits in my closet like that boy in A.I at the bottom of the ocean, waiting... I know that is not the reply or help you were looking for. Just so you know, you are not alone..

Well, that's a good start, at least I am not the only one!
Have you tried to connect your device via USB? My laptop can see a connected device but it can't recognize it and I hear some sounds coming from the tablet when I try to hold the `power` button. This made me think that it can be a display/screen related, so the device works but we can't see it due to the broken screen/display. Don't know how to check that though.
Same here, stock Nexus 7, won't turn on, just switched off one day and won't come back on, have tried everything as suggested above, can't get it to flicker, doesn't even register the power connection with a green light or anything

Try replacing the screen, just to check. If that doesn't fix it, at least you have a brand new screen!

I fix mine,
let it sit on the charger for a hour, then hold down the button for 20 sec
same issue here as well ive had it for about a year and im not able to access anything via my pc google help forums had no answer either, looks like we may be screwed..........
Hi, I just had same issue with my tablet only thing is that I was using it with ~20% of battery, nothing special - browsing the web using chrome, then the screen lit gray and shut off. After that no response either from charger, holding power button for 60+ seconds didn't work either, tried re-connecting the battery, still with no signs.
And then, I tried to plug in the charger and then pressing VolumeDown+Power immediately after connecting the charger. Suddenly got some response, that battery charging icon appeared, and it shows my battery charging, but from 0%. Still waiting to charge a bit until I can try to boot it.
I'll update this post with any news.
EDIT: When I connected my tablet to the charger it had that hissing sound, but after few minutes it stopped.
After 15 minutes of charging I managed to boot my Nexus7 with 7% of charge in it a that moment, It seems to work for now.
Summarry of what I did to solve my problem:
1. Opened the back of the N7 (I used a guitar pick for this) and re-connect the battery.
2. Then plugged in the charger and at the same time pressed VolumeDown+Power, battery icon lit up but went out, repeated step 1, and then step 2 again gave me animated battery charging animation which showed up for like 10 seconds
3. Waited for 10-15 minutes and tried to boot normally. And it works now

Honestly, I do not think it is the battery, I can see the Charge signal, and the Battery is showing 1,784 VDC tested unplugged and disconnected, my smart young co-worker seems to think POST is failing, I still never see a "Charging" indication.
Does anyone know , Is there a fail safe, say the battery is disconnected, and usb charger is plugged in, will i just see all 5VDC at the sub port, ?
I never see a screen flicker, DEAD battery sign, nothing.
co-worker, tried some things that made sense when he explained what he did, I would have to agree with him.
Now it is rooted, 4.x something I forget, Never went to 5.x did once early and did not like it, Back stock, ran 2 days no issues, Rooted again, 4.x still do not remember, worked great 3-4 months, Sons ran it to DEaD and that was it, put it up for 90 days or so, wife got new tablet, kids have Fire each, and here i am tabletless, CRAP, did not want to throw to much $$$$ at this thing, nor did I want to buy a new one.

I cannot boot to either.
I've tried all the combos, vol down + power, vol up + power, vol down + bixby + power, vol up +bixby + power.

I've tried but nothing sees it
Yea, I'm going to take it to a service center cause it seems like there's nothing I can do on my side.

Did you take the phone in for service? What did they do to fix it, if they fixed it... I have a dead phone and need some answers if they are out there. I'm looking through every post that has anything to do with this subject and coming up blank - just like my phone's screen!
Part of my issue is that I had a shut down from out of nowhere on NYE. I was able to bring it back up with the power, volume up, and Bixby combo the next day. Foolishly I assumed it was a fluke and went right back to using my phone just as I had before. I saw an article about disabling the Bixby button, which seemed to be the thing to do... When the phone shut down the next day again, I couldn't bring it back because I no longer have a Bixby button for the combo. It's been down since Jan. 2, and I'm at my wit's end. Can you please update your phone status? I'd appreciate it if you can!

Lol disabling the bixby button in software does not mean you can't trigger download mode. That level of software has no idea what packages you disabled ?
Did you have Substratum themes applied before updating?

Happened with me last night, bunch of updates and then black. I was gonna send to warranty, then someone told me Power + Bixby + Vl down and it worked. How can I find out what did it
When I called Samsung, they were clueless how to get it started again as we walked through all the button combinations they had. It was fully charged when it stopped working, both times. The second time it took me a few days of trying on my own, calling, Samsung and then going into their repair store.
They took it back to work on it after I explained what was going on. He tried several things and came out and told me it may need a replacement but wanted to try one more thing. Hours later, he came back and said he hooked it up to a charger and it had been dead. Once it started charging, it showed the green battery, lightning bolt and blinking circle. It still didn't start normally, but the three button combo worked at around 20%. I'm not sure if he tried before that, but it came back on.
I've discovered that my handset is extremely sensitive to cold temperatures and shuts down. I'm in the Midwest and have been working outside in a tent like structure. I listen to music, books, or podcasts while I'm working. Many times, I will put my phone on a shelf while charging but still listening. The phone shuts off and first I have to wait for it to warm up, then it has to drain the fully charged battery, and then I start charging it again. After the first time on my own, I did the button combo right after it started taking a charge and it worked.
I'm not sure if a replacement phone is the way to go, because if this is common on the S8, I might end up with another dud that would just frustrate me more. I like the phone, but this quirk is annoying.
Last night my phone was charging and accessible fine. This morning I have a green light at the top showing I assume that it's charged but the screen is totaly black. nothing I do brings up any screen. I tried all the button combos I tried plugging it in to the charger and nothing shows any kind of reaction. I tried plugging it into my computer and the computer said it was setting up device QUSB_BULK. Then said it was set up but even after it supposedly complete I could not find the device. What the hell?
S8 Black Screen
Is the green light staying on? This happened to me on one of the many shut down times I experienced. I think I narrowed it down to my phone not liking cold temperatures, but I don't know if that is your phone's issue. It hasn't happened since last winter, so I haven't needed to do any of this for quite some time, but I'm trying to remember all of the steps I took.
I'm gonna suggest getting the battery drained back down to zero. In order to drain the battery when it's black screened, I kept trying all the button combos repeatedly for, it seems like, maybe three or more days... I couldn't tell if it was dead on several of the occasions, but when I had an indication light, it went off after days of doing any and all button combos, just to drain what battery I could.
Once you do that, while keeping it out of any extreme temps, (if there have been any) then plug in the adapter that came with it, using a good quality USB-C cord and charge it again and see if the charging screen comes up. (The Fast Adapter Charger that connects with USB 3.o is the best to use. Samsung wanted me to use the original cord, but I have no idea where that is! I just used a good quality cord.)
If that doesn't do the trick, then it's not the same issue I had, and I wish you luck on finding out and getting it fixed! Don't forget to update the site for others to find out if your tricks work... (You can still try this, but it may be just to rule it out as a possibility.) Try draining it more than you first did, and then plug it in again to see if it takes a change.
If it is taking a charge again after draining and plugging in your power cord, wait until you get back up to at least 20% and then try the three button start (Bixby / Power / Volume Up at the same time) and make sure you hold them for up to 30 seconds or until it kicks on. One time, I think I held it for almost a full minute. But it did take the change, restarted on the three button combo restart, and didn't have any new issues from its down time.
If this works for you, come back and tell us! If not, come back and report what you try and what the results are.
I really hope that helps! Good luck!

S8 with OtterBox case (and screen protector back in the box. It just interfered with my phone's touch screen responsiveness.)

Sounds like a system problem, you can try to use the button to force a reboot, if there is no response, you can try to reinstall the system, if this still can not be solved, then you may need to replace the new screen, you can go to Witrigs to see Note 8 screen, they There is an original Note 8 Super AMoled screen for sale. The price is also relatively low.
