Finally got my screen to look good - Nexus S General

after trying out different combinations I finally got my screen to look good Right now I prefer it over my Infuse 4g's screen which is super amoled plus
none of those "best voodoo settings" helped well.. they did a bit but i still wasnt satisfied. If anyone else has that problem where your screen looks like someone took a piss on it (that green/yellow tint on it) Ill be happy to share my settings
sorry if its long lol just had to say that cause im happy my screen looks great even though no one probably cares

Hah glad it worked out. Why not just post the settings here right now?

Ya seriously share please!

Big fan of these. Not washed out or yellow, a tad darker than it should be though.

What color tint does your screen have? Blue, Yellow or Neutral?

In conjunction to the post, "blue tint problem," which isn't really a problem but anyway....
I thought it'd be interesting to create a poll to see where everyone's at with their Vibrants.
Please participate in the poll, it'll be very interesting to see...
So if you're on the blue side or yellow side, obviously submit yours accordingly, however, for neutral that's for those who have calibrated monitors that can get true comparisons to determine if it's neutral.
There's no need to lie here LOL..it's just for fun so the more accurate it is the better. Don't just click neutral if you don't really know for sure. Try comparing your phone first with other Vibrants to be sure.
Here we go!
It's slight blue, but related to viewing angle and screen brightness. Viewing straight on, it's pretty neutral.

I know what you mean. Could the SAMOLED screen perhaps slightly change in its color tone as it warms up?
When I fired up the two Vibrants I have that was turned on for the first time and compared it to my other two which has been in use, the two never been used phones screen looked identical in its tone/shade.
So perhaps over time it does change as it, "breaks in?"
Does anyone know if this blue tint will get better with time? Mine seems to be the same, wondering if I should exchange my phone.
Well, mine is more cyan, though I can understand people calling it blue and it's driving me crazy. Even with brightness all the way up, there is no real white. This issue will likely cause me to return my Vibrant - along with the cheap build quality - as my Nexus screen looks much better and neutral in comparison. Even my wife noticed it immediately though she also has a Nexus.
Neutral, I've compared with monitors and other Vibrants from my T-Mobile store.
The blue should fade over time..sometimes they put in a bit of extra blue to compensate the blue's lower life span..if you want to even it out use a blue background as your home screen for a while and it should even out >.>

Are you sure it will fade? Where did you get that info from, I know wikipedia talks about this and says the same thing, but wikipedia is not really that accurate. Where did you get your info?
I downladed an LCD test app from market, i'm running a constanst blue screen hoping it will help fade out the blue tint a bit. thanks

When compared to mine my wife's had a very strong blue tint to it. Since I ordered ours over the phone I called Tmobile. They overnighted me a replacement without any hassle, I'd give them a call and see what they will do for you.
posted this in the other "blue tint" thread too
"...since the OLED material used to produce blue light degrades significantly more rapidly than the materials that produce other colors, blue light output will decrease relative to the other colors of light...In order to delay the problem, manufacturers bias the colour balance towards blue so that the display initially has an artificially blue tint, leading to complaints of artificial-looking, over-saturated colors..."

I agree, stupidest topic ever. I thought I seena blue tint but now its gone. And as fast as the nexus screen looking nicer...my friend had his over the other day and it looks dull compared to the vibrant.
I guess if your imagining a blue tint, or don't know how to change screen settings them maybe you need a less advanced device.

I guess if you did not receive a defective Vibrant with an extremely blue screen, even with brightness all the way up and power saving mode off, your not qualified to speak for those who did. Of course it would not make sense to you.
i dont know about you guys but every time Ive ever seen a white LED its always had a blueish tint (like automotive LED's) its really not that big of an issue
My display was noticeably blue the moment I turned it on... going to the T-Mobile store today to see if I can get a better unit with a more neutral color temperature.

It matters to some people more than others. If it doesn't bother you then great. It's not really fair to criticize people who are bothered by it--one should have a reasonable expectation for color accuracy of their display, especially for a device so touted as being a multimedia powerhouse.

I'm a graphic designer. I work with colors for a living every day. I've come to think that I have a pretty decent grasp of color.
Like I said, if you can't tell or it doesn't bother you or your handset isn't afflicted--great! But please don't dismiss the complaints of others simply because you "can barely tell the diff". ****
I have that issue with the blue screen and for some reason I'm the only one who sees it, I work for T-Mobile and I was showing my co-workers that there is a blue tint to the screen and they didn't see it it until I compared it to another phone. I'm also a graphic artist and I guess we see colors that others don't notice cuss we have too that's what we do. I also had a issue with the screen, there was some pixelation on my screen so I exchanged it.

You know, some people here say every Super Amoled has a blue tint. I have to disagree. I've been comparing my vibrant side by side to other vibrants, and the screens vary from phone to phone. Samsung deffinately has some manufacturing inconsistences. Side by side to other Vibrants, my screen has a very visible dark grayish blue tint. Other vibrants have a slight blue/green tint. While other vibrants i've compared to have gorgeus warm whites. 1 vibrant had a very dingy yellow look to all the whites. So this is not in our imagination, the screens vary a lot on these phones.
My cousin just got the vibrant this morning, she had not seen mine. She saw mine this morning and says "why is your screen blue?" Put mine side by side next to hers, and hers has nice warm bright whites. All of our brightness settings were identical.
I'll be exchanging shortly when I have time.

So, does your replacement still show the blue screen tint?

Different looking colors on 2 Incredibles?

I've got two incredibles side by side. Both are apparently listed as 'samsung_oled_display' with dmesg.
Right one has a purple tint that is more obvious on low brightness. But colors pop more, more contrast, saturation. On high brightness, whites and blacks look more right.
Left is slightly brighter on equal settings. Has a slight yellowy tint that's more noticeable on high brightness. But nowhere near as obvious as the purple tint.
Any thoughts? What looks more like the typical Incredible display people get?
it looks like maybe some of your LED backlights aren't as bright, or out completely. notice the shadow on the edges of the two sides? i don't notice a difference other than in one of the pictures, though. maybe do a better job taking pictures that aren't as shaky/blurry?
Best I could do, the incredible is my best camera and couldn't use it.
And which picture and which phone are you referring to?
I'm more just wondering why there's such a difference, and which one looks most accurate to what everyone else has?
3rd picture is the one i noticed it on. however, i wouldn't say....with the pictures i have in front of me....that either are too far off from what "everyone else has".
if you're that concerned about it, call VZW.
I had the same problem with a replacement, had to get a new refurb that didn't have a pink screen. Customer service is not aware of the issue, you might have to take it to a store and even the techs might not see it.
Sent from my ADR6300
I did, this is my replacement ha... I'm not going to ask for a third, I'm just deciding which one is more like the rest.
And you don't think either are too far from what others have? Between the two there's a decent variation, Samsung amoled manufacturing just vary that much?
Only the first picture can I see a noticeable difference
I'm aware of people reporting a pinkish tint, but I didn't think its the same, since this comes off as purple to me.
And yea the first picture is the most obvious, but if you just look at the color difference in white, gray, black for the other 3 pictures, you can tell they're different tones/shades.
Honestly the left one is 'warmer' in tone and the right one is 'cooler'. Though right has better contrast and is overly saturated.
I think I'll probably keep the left one even though the right one is hands down amazing looking in full brightness, but looks all purplish in low, which is basically the setting I'll be using the phone most in.
Amoleds don't have background leds, the pixels emt the light themselves, as fat as I know

OLED doesnt use backlighting
Just pick the one that is easiest on your eyes. Yes colours will vary differently by batch (not usually by this much but really I can't tell a lot by these pictures). Personally to me overall one doesn't appear as bright as the other, so if they are using the same profiles, I'd take the bright one (but that's just me).
I think you are making a mountain out of mole hill. They both look ok, yes different but acceptable. It's a phone, you are not going to be doing Photoshop or high end video processing. If it bugs you, by all means take it back and ask for an exchange.
Oh I did, that's why I have two
And no I'm not, I can easily ask for a third. But like I said I won't.
I just thought I can get some expert opinions from others, -and- start a discussion.
There was a thread regarding evo's @ i6.photobucket. com/albums/y204/blu3g/002and003.jpg
that got some discussion.

They get dimmer over time, so yes the brighter one if in newer condition.
I'd prefer S-LCD to AMOLED anyday just for the fact that I dont have to worry about the screen dimming over time or burning in.
My girlfriends is like that. We both got our phones at the same time last June, same screens. She lost hers, and while her new one is AMOLED it's pinkish. It's only REALLY noticeable when the screen dims.
.... Seriously? You're complaining about a tint... A TINT!!!! the phone still works the same right? my replacement has the purplish tint too but who cares nobodies going to look at and say oh man your phone has a purplish tint what a fag lol
He was just asking a question because like most people on this forum, we are intrigued by how tech works, and we like to ask why do gadgets so the things they do, he wasn't complaining. Everybody who is saying that he needs to stop complaining needs to calm down, this isn't 4 chan. If you don't know why the screens are different colors, then there's no point in you commenting on this thread, especially if its to talk down to somebody under false accusations like some of you are.

i jsut got a replacement in the mail a week ago and i saw the same differences between my old one and new one. And i've heard of this happening to other people. Here is a thread all about this. I havent taken the time to read it but im sure it has the answer http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=656128
P.S. Garrett, you sound like a real douche
I've seen similar in my phone. I had to turn it in for a replacement and the first thing I noticed when I booted the new phone up was "hey, that white looks more pink than the original phone." Just to make sure I wasn't insane, I showed my wife the new phone and she immediately pops out "hey, that looks pink."
It's not bad enough that it's really a problem, just a little different, and the difference only really pops out at low brightness. I'm not going to re-return over it. At least this one doesn't have the spazzed out and possessed optical joystick that my first Inc did.

Whites on Samoled?

Hows the whites on your Samoled?? Mine is grayish and They dont feel as saturated as the Vibrant.

Like LCD warm and cool colors...My sisters vibrant has cool blueish whites and I have the exact opposite but that could also be the os doing it so I dont know thats why Im asking fellow Nexus S users
My Nexus S definitely has warmer whites than the cooler, bluish whites on my old Vibrant.
Oh ok thanks for the reply just making sure my baby is allllll good =D
I think I readed that the powersave option for the display does that. Try turning it off.

Ok cool so we are good I can say?? Thanks samven582
Have them both and definitely warmer on the Nexus. I prefer it the blueish tint ALWAYS bother me. The color on the Vibrant are fun but don't seem as natural. I prefer the Nexus...both screens are really nice though just prefer how the Nexus is dialed in.
Can u guys share some first impressions of the phone..I'm on the edge, very tempted right now
Get It you wont be let down at least thats just me!!
Ok so now im assured thanks everyone for pitching in!!
Nexus S has warmer whites compared to my Vibrant, but my G2 has even warmer whites. I suppose it's do with the AMOLED tech itself, vs LCD.
Good glad to know it wasnt a defect +)
My NS is so warm, I thought my eyes were playing tricks. After looking at the MyTouch 4G, seeing a browser window pop up on the NS looks so weird.
Lol, it's the blueish tint on the Galaxy S phones that are defective! LOL.

Hehe, perhaps. Shows how everyone's preference is different. I don't mind warm, but it appears to be a bit overkill for my taste.
I had my original Vibrant's internal speaker stop working, so I asked for a warranty replacement. It came, and all the whites have a blueish tint. It is ugly compared to my original Vibrant's pure epic white. Original Vibrant is much higher quality. So I called, got another replacement. Blue again! Now should I just deal with it or demand another one, that's the question. Lol. Either way, the Nexus S looks gorgeous.
My Nexus S has a very bluish tint, but I'm not going to sweat it. Every time I try to exchange a phone, the second one ends up being worse somehow heh. Also, I know I'll be buying the next best thing within 4-6 months, anyway.

Better screen in newer Vibrants?

So I have had my vibrant since the beginning. I just got my wife one and the weird thing is her screen is so much better than mine. Her screen does not have the greyish look in white colors. Its very bright and white. I have compared with brightness levels the same and on different roms with the same effect. The new vibrants screen looks so much better.
Sent from a Galaxy S far....far....away.
its the same...
happened to me yesterday when i got a new one as well..
A guy told me..
that it was because the stock kernel isn't trying to save battery, while the custom kernels you flash are saving battery so they lower their contrast, brightness etc.
Where as Stock kernels go full-out with everything at maximum
Hope i answered your question.
NO, newer Vibrant's don't have better screens. This is an old issue.

Ok this is an old issue. Newer Vibrants do not have better screens.
No two Vibrant screens are alike.
From it's release date, every single Vibrant was like a box of chocolates, you never knew what tint your display would be.
Some vibrants come with blue tint, others with grey, some yellow, some red, some brown.
It is a quality control issue and has nothing to do with the manufacture date.

Hmm.. Yes his screen does seem a bit different but not much its not the color but the brightness hes always at max... so it looks brighter... hmmm
interesting.
If it looks brighter at the same brightness settings, its probably because you have the power saving box checked in display while she doesn't. I thought the same thing when I compared to my friend's new vibrant, but after I unchecked the box it looked the same.

Couple of things...... One, alot of the people on this forum really do not understand writing etiquette...... I agree actually with you, it very hard to interpret some of the writing as neutral when (intentionally or not) they are couched in sarcasm and innuendo. Now that I got that off my chest........
The Amoled screens, when they were making them in May-Sept, there was a huge shortage because of lack of manufacturing capacity. As a result, alot of the q/c was suspect. Mostly because they did not go the full 100%. Added to that there are limitations in the process (since effectively they are grown (the amoled)and so it is a slower process. Samsung oversold their phones and in June had to start building a 2.1 Billion manufacturing Amoled facility.
Anyway, all this background to say YES the new amoled are of a better quality, I have noticed it as well I got a vibrant for my wife in December and it is a nicer screen view for sure.
Hope that helps
Negative wait til the screen settles in a bit my friend got A 4g and my phone and his ended up looking the same

How do I know if my Screen is bad?

This is my first time with an AMOLED screen and I keep reading things about tints and such with the screen. I don't see any colored tints yet though I'm still waiting on my Sim card to really use it, just set it up ahead of time. I did notice though that when I compared it to my Nexus 5 the whites on my N6P look kinda off white. I'm not sure if that's normal or not?

If the tint of the screen is uneven or there is an excessive yellow tint then the screen is duff. Have a look in the "pink hue" thread in the Q&A section and there's pics of the uneven green/pink tints. If you don't see any and you like the screen then there's no issue. At the end of the day, it's your perspective of whether or not you have a problem.

If you don't see anything wrong with it why are you going to go looking for something wrong?
Really. I have this ever so slight purplish/pinkish thing on the right that doesn't seem to be there all the time. Literally the only time I ever see it again is when I'm in these forums and someone reminds me to start looking for it with a post about it. Seriously.

If you can't see a problem with the screen by looking at it then you're fine. Don't go looking for issues with something because you'll psych yourself into thinking something is wrong when nothing is wrong. . I use to be the same way trust me. Just enjoy a great phone with a really good dev community..
I was just asking if the whites not looking pure white was normal. I said I don't see any colorish tint but I posted this cause I have no experience with AMOLED and didn't know if that was normal for this type of screen or not. I'm not looking for issues its just a question.
Is there an app to test for tint?
There's considerable variability in the white point of AMOLED displays due to the manufacturing process. Each one is a little different. Hey, it's "organic", right? Seems like they should be able to calibrate that at the factory, but apparently not. If you send it back and get another one, it might look whiter, or it might not. It should look reasonably uniform, and reasonably white. If you think it's unacceptable, send it back.
If you're worried that it might not be exactly 6000 Kelvins, then you should seek therapy.
Back in the Galaxy Nexus days, I saw one that was very pink, one very yellow, and one that was just right (mine!).
So I got a replacement cause I felt the screen had a tint.. Here is the comparison pics... The one on the left is the replacement. Think the difference is clear.
Just out of curiosity, how are the perfectionists claiming the screen should look? Mine is like the left image, and I'm happy with it.

The screen should have an even tint all the way across it. Both of the screens in the pic change from a pink to a green/blue tint.

As long as your happy, thats what matters.
I admit I have OCD when it comes to electronics. Got an RMA with a screen that works for me, so I am happily enjoying my phone. :victory:
Got get over it at some point.
Call me crazy but I can deal with the uneven tint. Hell, as I was taking the pics I didn't even notice it, although I probably will now lol but what bugged me and made me RMA was the solid film which looks like a yellowish tint that dulled whites and kinda the screen as a whole. I'm happy with the replacement even if its not perfect

The replacement device on the left looks worse than the 'defective device' but they're both bad if I'm honest. RMA again buddy.
I just checked with my mate's 6P and mine and mine was brighter than his and he noticed this. His display was less warm too but a bit on the grey side. Both panels had an even color finish, unlike your samples mate.
Here's mine at lowest brightness. Not sure if its "perfect" or not but seems fine to me.

I think the one on the right looks more even.
