Please help a possible future HTC Wizard owner ! I want to be part of the club ! It's as easy as clicking "reply":
I have tried the Treo and I appreciate it's one-handed use.
Since there is no "windows" and "ok" buttons on the HTC Wizard, I assume people will remap them (either to Messages, IExplorer, or the Send button)
Do you feel that you can navigate with one hand without worrying about dropping it, since your thumb is at the bottom instead of the middle ?
If you remapped your buttons, you'd have to click on one button at the top for Start, then slide your thumb back down to select the menu item, then slide your thumb back up to click OK every time you need to close a window... it seems like a work-out !
How do you dial a number you've never dialed before when you can't look at the screen ?
I love the Treo's form factor, but the old OS, lack of multi-tasking, lack of real bluetooth and WiFi are holding me back...
Please enlighten me !

Yup

I remapped the Voice Button (and set Voice Command to the IE button) and the Comm Manager button to start menu.

I dropped it yesterday because someone bumped into me (fortunately the device survived with only a few scratches), so I don't walk around using it onehanded anymore. I hold it with one hand and push the buttons with the other. no stylus needed.

I haven't had a problem, but as I said above, now I use both hands for safety.
How do you dial a number you've never dialed before when you can't look at the screen ?
You can't Or you can used Voice Command (sold separately) to say "Dial" then the number

Go the Wizard!! I saw a Treo 650 in the shops yesterday, and had a hold (had no battery so I couldn't play) and the keyboard on the Wizard is much better, but the Treo's kb can be used onehanded farely easiler. It definately beats the Wizard in onehandedness, but I would pick the Wizard because of the reasons you stated, plus the use of Windows Mobile (Palm is too simple).
Please enlighten me !
You should now feel (somewhat) enlightened!
Does anyone know a registry hack yet for making it possible to remap ALL hardware buttons (or at least the OK button below the jog-wheel, cause this seems to be hard-coded to the Windows-menu) !?
Preferably a reg-hack that (re)enables this options in the regular \Settings\Buttons tab...
Another problem i want to fix (apart from the ROM being immature) is the fact that i have to go all the way into the Bluetooth-settings on the CommManager screen to connect my Jabra 620s in stereo/audio-mode, which is quite anoying and timeconsuming...
Some other strange thing is that when i want use Voicecommand (while playing audio) to either call someone or speak a command to WMP, this will only work when i use VC-assigned button on the device, and NOT with the answer/end button on my headset (wich should be working like the VC-button on device).
Anyone able to help me here ?
PS: i'm quite experienced WM user dating back to the Wyvern/PalmsizePC CE 2.12 devices...but i just can't seem to find my way around these huge registries in todays devices anymore... guess i'm getting old...
Anyone please ...?
I would like to know too. Style-wise, there are a lot of things HTC got wrong with the Trinity. In fact, I found the HTC Wizard better designed.
Damn thing needs IE, Messaging, Comm Manager buttons and a Volume slide but instead it has 2 OK buttons and a jog/dial which I rarely use.
Not to mention how buggy the release ROM is, what with huge delays between standby mode and MiniSD cards requiring re-insertion to work properly.
P.S. It would be nice to be able to change the functionality of the jog/dial wheel to volume control.
Yup - this is driving me nuts too.
I have 7 hardware buttons (inc the power button) on the trinity and I can only map 3 of them from Settings.
It's a real handicap (& Voice Command is conflicting with the voice dial button - or at least that's what I think is happening with my repeated failed installations).
Some wisdom from the forum would be almost as appreciated as a fix
Thanks,
M1

I don't have my Trinity yet, but have you tried some of the 3rd party Button remappers that are available? Magic Button etc.

I got my Trinity last friday and am using a 2Gb MiniSD card and so far no problems with it. I feel no real delay when coming out of standby mode and no problem at all with the MiniSD card, maybe you got a early version of the ROM that contained this particular problems.
I do agree with you with the OK buttons, but i also understand the way they were designed, the button close to the jog wheel is to be used together with the jog wheel so that you can single handedly use the machine.
Lets see if someone suggests a good 3rd party tool to remap the buttons and then everybody is happy ;-)

I am able to get VC to work with call/answer button when using my Motorola headsets H300 and HS805. The phone needs to be out of standby mode ie screen needs to be on. I can't seem to get it to work with my R35 I.tech stereo wireless headset. I guess this could mean compatibility issues between headsets? Does the call/answer button work if you are not listening to music?

Yes...you're right...it does work when the screen of my trinity is on. But offcourse when listening to music the screen is gonna be off...
The button on the headset does activate voicecommand when device is on (ie screen on) and no music is playing. But i'd rather have it understand my commands like "what track is this" while music plays (without having to take out the phone of my pocket).
As for the button-mapping: i'm familiar with the buttonmappers out there, but another application on my trinity is just not what i need... Is there really no way to get to this functionality through the registry ? I've searched quite a chunk of the registry but gave up; i just can't find it...

Precisely: one handed operation... That's what i want, so i want the button next to the jogdial to be the ALT+TAB function (which is available through Spb PocketPlus)...so i want to be able to map this to whatever button i like, not just the 2 options HTC gave me... (i don't count press'n hold as an extra button).
I think it's quite ridiculous to have TWO buttons activating the startmenu, and have them hardcoded to that. What's the point in 2 buttons doing the same thing ?
Being able to change the 'Windows' button woukld also be a fine sollution...

Just tried, it works (AE Button Plus -> File -> Add button)
But i found a little bug, after i used it to swap Right Softkey and Start Menu Button, Start Menu Button works fine (changed to be Right Softkey) but for Right Softkey, no matter how i press it, start menu will not be shown !!!
Because, after i press Right Softkey, Start Menu Button event is triggered, but Start Menu Button is set to be Right Softkey by AE Button Plus, so at the end pressing Right Softkey will be regarded as pressing REAL Right Softkey rather than Start Menu.
The most strange thing is that such bug will not happen when pressing pressing Start Menu Button =.="
Any idea ? How to solve it ?
Thanks in advance

Hi guys,
I'm too looking for a way to remap the startmenu-button for e.g. starting an application. No 3rd party software I tried so far is able to do so...
Any suggestion how to reassign the startmenue button to call a specific application?

AEButton Plus maps all but the standby button...
... on my Wizard. Well, it doesn't touch the soft-reset, the camera gets funky when I try to map it, and I can't seem to move the vibrate function off the hold "Comm Manger" Key. Given I've got 50 different hardware button options, (or 37 added if I leave all the default functioning in place) with this nifty shareware (basically fully functional if you want to use it free forever), who cares about the dumb camera button (not in the count above).
My biggest problem is remebering where I mapped it all. My second is making decisions about how to map them.... :|| (that's a repeat sign in music-talk)
You gotta try it. I'd be curious to find out how it works on your hardware.
http://ae.inc.ru/aebplus.php
On my wizard, a program called SmartsKey (which also mostly works on our Mogul) could use the rocker switch as a volume up and down toggle, when you are outside of a call.
I am annoyed at having to tap the volume icon to change my volume on my phone when at the today screen. We need to have some way to map the scroll wheel's button to open the volume settings when pushed, and then we could simply scroll the wheel up or down to change the volume. Also on the wizard, you could hold down the comm manager button to toggle mute.
I would be willing to work on this with anyone else that would like to try and either make a script or small app that would allow us to do this. It's one of the only major gripes I have so far with this phone. I guess I was just spoiled with the wizard, but I know that this is a hugely capable phone. It would make sense that we could map something to that push button on the wheel. I just don't know how to look for it.
What do you think? Wouldn't that make adjusting the volume a lot better? It seems like this should be the way it works from the factory.
****UPDATE****
I have found a little 48k app that opens the volume balloon. This will definitely work for now, until I can figure out if we can use the wheel button cleanly or not. I have mapped it to the push and hold voice command button, so that when I hold the button, the volume balloon opens. YAY!!
File is attached for logged-in users
That sounds like a pretty cool idea, but I really haven't been bothered too much by the scroll wheel not always acting as volume. I wouldn't know much about writing a script or application, but I'd be happy to help with testing.
A FREAKING MEN. how ridiculous can they be? every phone since the beginning of time has had a hard button to change to vibrate.
Yes, Please! I have found this quite annoying as well. I wish I had the know-how to help you.
Great idea. I find myself never using the scroll wheel for anything and always wanting it to simply control the volume.
try AEBUTTON PLUS i duno if it will work on the mogul, but u can give it a try
if you use the 5-tabbed home plugin from HTC, one of the tabs is ringer profile, and it mutes/vibrate/normal settings allow for quick ringer change. I find that it is enough for my needs.
that is one feature i love on my treo 755. i can stut the volume of with a keyflick. very useful for when in meetings or with a customer (i am a car salesman). when walking up to a customer i just flick off the volume.
i cannot do this on my mogul. i have to unlock the screen, go to the volume tab, then click on the volume. 3 steps that require looking at the screen vs one that can be done in pocket or a holster...
I am currently getting some pointers on where to start from those much smarter than I. Hopefully I will get some responses and will be able to start on this. I understand the concept, but it will just be a little game of connecting the dots. I KNOW that this can be done. And it WILL happen

It works this way when you are inside of a call, yes, but I am referring to when you are OUTSIDE of a call, such as at the today screen. Currently, the only way to adjust the volume outside of a call would be by tapping on the volume icon and adjusting the volume.
The idea is to push in the scroll wheel's button to open that volume adjustment screen, so then we can just scroll the wheel up or down to change the device and ringer volume.
I agree that there needs to be a volume control like other HTC devices, however the scroll wheel is great for navigating menus, and pressing it in is the "enter" button. Would you really want to give that option up for something else? Imagine scrolling through your emails and you find the one to open and press it in only to be presented with the volume control instead. I wouldn't want that...
Also, remember that the scroll wheel and d-pad are linked. The hardware can't differentiate the two- in other words, whatever you set the scroll wheel and press-in to do, the d-pad and center button will do as well. Think about this really hard before you try it.

I edited my first post to include the zip, and then the thread was down towards the bottom, so I posted a bump reply so that it could be up to the top again, in the way it would have if I had posted the zip by hitting reply instead. Make sense?
I'm working on something similiar to this... kind of tricky...
I don't want to hook the whole input subsystem, so what I am attempting to do is create a today plugin and that will sieze control of the wheel when on the today screen and change the volume.
I've got it basically working, just need to tweak when it grabs control; right now it does it on WM_PAINT, but that message is sent quite a bit and spikes processor usage. And I'd like to get it working without actually drawing a window, not sure how well WM6 will play with that.
Aso need to see if I can make this work without it being the first item on the today screen.
For those interested the ticks on the volume balloon are the following values:
0xFFFFFFFF
0xCCCCCCCC
0x99999999
0x66666666
0x33333333
0x00000000
You can use those values with waveOutSetVolume(), just use NULL as the first parameter and the DWORD level as the second.
When I get it working, or tired of fighting with it, I'll post the source code.

oh, ok!
As promised, consider it an alpha version. I have included a release compiled dll, the source, and a sample .reg file.
Basically, it is a today plugin that steals the focus whenever ever the today screen is shown, then uses the wheel to raise and lower the volume. I think it has to have a visible window, so I made the window 1 pixel high and transparent.
Probably still needs a little work painting and figuring out when to grab focus. Right now I use the WM_PAINT as a test because I figure if the window is getting drawn then it is a good assumption the today screen is active.
Please post any updates to the source.
For those using Wisbar Advance and a button mapping app like Smartskey, you can map the scroll wheel button push to the WA volume adjuster, right?
"mute" button
It's not exactly what you're talking about, but you can get a cab at http://ppcgeeks.com/ring-toggle-hardware-fix-for-mogul-titan-t8079.html that lets you set any hard button to toggle between vibrate and ring. So you can use it as a mute button (but not quiet/loud).
Hey guys, so I have been using my tp2 for a couple months now and I have noticed some things that could have some kind of App development. I have no idea where to begin with Developing apps and all of that tech stuff, so I'll put my ideas out there. If these things do exist please inform me, thanks
1. Customization of the Mute Key on the back - Personally I have never once touched this button because I dont use the speakerphone that often. My dad on the other hand uses his speakerphone many times throughout the day, but he has still no need for the mute button. Which leads to my ideas of being able to customize it for a push and/or push and hold functionality.
2. A keyboard that is just a D-pad. I tried the "G-pad" app which is supposed to enable to g-sensor to be used for scrolling, but I haven't been able to figure out how to use it properly. I also tried the ZoomAdds scrolling with the Zoom Bar, this is alright, however it doesn't always work for some reason.
3. Im not sure if this one is an app, or just a functionality of the Energy Rom, but i downloaded some apps from the Marketplace and the majority of them dont sort out into the folders in the Energy rom (such as Games, Tools, etc.) Is there an app for this or you can control it from the the settings in the energy rom or something? I didnt install the energy rom on my phone, which is why I know like nothing about it.

Im just curious, what is the timeout on the double and triple presses? Like what if i was in a list and i had down set to a single press of the home key, and i pressed it a couple times, and I activated the double press function?

Bluetooth Keyboard Shortcuts on Samsung Vibrant
(And Possibly for Samsung Galaxy Tab)
Smartphones now come in bigger screens of up to 4 inches or more. It is no longer uncommon for a phone to have a 1 Ghz processor with storage of up to 32 GB on an external sd card. With these improved features, it is now convenient to use the smartphone as a replacement for the desktop PC or a laptop.
There is, however, one drawback. The built-in buttons and keyboards, whether slide-out hardware keyboard or screen keyboard on the phone, are too small to allow for easy typing. This is where a Bluetooth keyboard becomes a very useful tool. With the upswell of tablets and tablet wanabees on the market recently, this could also be possibly applied on tablets.
In my case, I have a Think Outside Stowaway Bluetooth keyboard which I am using with a Samsung Vibrant, aka Galaxy S or Samsung T959. I originally used the keyboard with a Nokia N82. When I bought the keyboard, it required drivers specific for the Nokia phone. Luckily, I was able to download a driver from the iGo website (iGo bought Think Outside). With that, I was able to use all the features of the keyboard. Although I haven’t had the chance to try it, these shortcuts might also be usable on a Galaxy Tab.
It is important to note that, even without an installer, the keyboard will work with other devices but this will be limited to simple typing of text. When my Vibrant phone was updated to Android 2.2, I was able to use my Bluetooth keyboard. While tinkering with it, I was able to devise some shortcuts to replace what operations would have been possible only with an installer. Please see the following:
First of all, observe that the keys in the Think Outside or iGo keyboard are color coded. If you press any of the keys, what appears on the screen re the default applications. For example, if you press “Q”, what appears is the letter “Q”. But if you press the blue “Fn” key and press “Q”, what appears is the number “1” which is color blue under the letter “Q” key. And when you press the green “Fn” key and “Q”, what you get is “!” which is color green on the “Q” key. And so on. But not everything works right. That’s what this piece is about. We will discuss some workarounds.
A word of caution. I cannot guarantee that this will work with other devices. Let us be clear about what hardware I am using: Samsung Vibrant and Think Outside Stowaway ultraslim Bluetooth keyboard. The keyboard is also known as the iGo Bluetooth keyboard. My phone is on Android 2.2. As for software, I am using Documents to Go v3 for document creation and editing. Being done with that, let’s get underway.
Most important shortcut: Green Fn key+Home.
These two keys are beside each other. This replaces the “home” button on the phone. Wherever you are on the phone, pressing these two keys brings you to the default home screen. You will find why this is the most important shortcut in the following.
Add applications shortcuts to the home screen. You will see that on the keyboard, highlighted in blue, are the following applications: Calendar, Contacts, Inbox, Notes, Word, Excel, IE. Simply pressing on these keys won’t work. What you do is press green Fn+home. If you have already placed shortcuts of the said applications on the home screen, press the direction arrows on the keyboard to get to the application you want to launch and press enter.
Illustration: Let’s say you’re browsing a webpage and you want to open the calendar. Press green Fn+home and you’re at the home screen. Scroll to calendar and it will launch. This presumes that you had earlier placed a calendar shortcut on the home screen. Of course, you can cut it anyway you like to suit your taste.
Home Screen Menu. On the phone, you press the menu button to get to settings, set wallpaper, add item etc. On the Bluetooth keyboard you press blue Fn+A, press the arrows where you want to go and press “enter”
Google Search. Press Alt+A or press green Fn+A
Call log. Press blue Fn+D
Put phone on sleep mode immediately or to wake from sleep mode. Press blue Fn+F or press green Fn+end
To reboot phone. Press together Ctrl+Alt+Delete
To bring up the symbols table. Press Alt THEN press space bar. Do not press both keys at the same time.
Documents to Go shortcuts. With Documents to Go open, you can perform the following operations:
Blue Fn+A = open menu
Blue Fn+Esc = save, discard or cancel document
Press shift twice = all caps
To highlight text to cut, copy or edit etc, press shift while Pressing the arrow button in the desired portion to be highlighted.
Miscellaneous.
Camera – You can use the keyboard as a remote camera shutter for self portrait. Set the phone on a tripod etc. Go in front of the phone bringing your Bluetooth keyboard. Press enter to click the shutter.
On a webpage, pressing the spacebar scrolls down.
In Android Market home page, simply type what you're looking for; it automatically goes to the search bar.
Searching for other shortcuts is still a work in progress. Your contributions will be most welcome. I hope this contribution is helpful to you and others.

Forgive me, I'm very curious but a little unclear how you created these shortcuts in Android. I am using a Dsi Mini Bluetooth Keyboard and Mouse (WKB-1500) so it may not apply. However, if you are referring to an Android App/driver, then perhaps I'll find something similar for my keyboard. Regardless, thanks for the post. I'm looking forward to seeing the Galaxy S replace my laptop.
I didn't actually do any technical stuff, just trial-and-error punching keys and combinations of keys and observing results. I also tried copying keyboard presses of a phone with a hardware keyboard. Thats how I discovered that double pressing shift brings up all caps.
Understood. Trial and error often provides the first documentation. Thanks for the effort.
Any chance you could tell us what, if anything, the keyboard suggests the Fn+ buttons normally represent (shown in blue above the normal character). For instance, on my keyboard Fn-Left sends the Home key and Fn-A sends the ~ character. These should be the keystrokes being received by Android and then mapped to the results you found.
I tried find that driver on the iGo site but all I saw was drivers for Pocket PC and Blackberry. Do you have a url for the driver?
Thanks
Working driver for Stowaway
hlwilliams (and anyone else trying to use Stowaway keyboard with Android devices):
I had given up all hope and found BlueKeyboard JP. It's available in the Market.
Follow the instructions on the developer's blog site. (sotolog.net SLASH bluekeyboard SLASH 2010 SLASH 06 2010 07 2010 log3 DOT html) and you can probably go to work within minutes. (Sorry but I am not yet allowed to post URL's. The developers's blog is also specified in the Market page for BlueKeyboard JP.)
I have gotten it working on the Galaxy Tab running 2.2 and Nexus One running 2.3.3. And they worked exactly as documented immediately.
Caution: My partner tried with the HTC Desire and it seems to have had bad interactions with his Motorola Bluetooth stereo headset. (Headset now only plays music in phone headset mono mode.) We have not (yet) narrowed down whether this is an interaction with HTC Sense, the Android ROM version, this particular Motorola model, etc.
