[Q] ICS 4.0.4 gapps - Defy Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
I'm running the March 30 version of Quarx's Defy+ builds for CM9. All went well,
except a little scare solved by the battery fix, but the Google Apps package won't work. This CM9 build comes with CWM v5.0.5, and when i try the gapps package (the google apps name is gapps-ics-20120317-signed.zip) it says "installation aborted" after trying to open the update package.
Then I realized that on this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1432100that I had got my stuff from said that the gapps package was for 4.0.3, which wasn't right cause i am on 4.0.4.
That prompted some further research, but I can't find a gapps package for 4.0.4! all of the gapps zips are for 4.0.3! Anyone find one that works for 4.0.4 CM9?
Any help is appreciated.

gapps 20120317 work fine for me (06.04 by Epsylon3 with Froyo kernel), but I flashed them while I still had 4.0.3.

[Q] Defy+ - Help choosing CM7 ROM (Android 2.3.4)

I own a Defy+ with Android 2.3.4 (4.5.1-134_DFP-89) branded by Vodafone-Italy.
I would like to run a CM7 ROM without flashing kernel as I read that flashing kernel 2.3.6 is a one way operation and no downgrade is possible.
I read in other thread that this WhiteRabbit ROM which is flashable but uses GO Launcher that I do not like.
Are there other CM7 ROMs working with Defy+ and with less customization (CM7 "pure" would be great but I think epsilon3 ROMs are 2.3.6 kernel only)?
Thanks and sorry for being noob
defy+ cm7.2 nightlies for 2.3.4
If you want pure CM7.2 you could actually use epsylon's defy+ nightly builds
I suggest new CM7.2 Nightly build for defy+
Epsylon7 currently makes Cm7.2 defy+ nightly builds WITHOUT Kernel so that they are compatible with most (all?) current defy+ phones (i.e android 2.3.4 / 2.3.5 / 2.3.6).
from this great thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1458729 i found:
12-01-27 Epsylon7/Defy+:
cm72-120127.0846-NIGHTLY-Defy+ link: http://www.defy-cm.net/defy_plus-cm7-nightly/
and AL's posted Defy+ fixes for camera and battery etc http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...ostcount=15069
I flashed those over my stock Defy+ 2.3.4 build 4.5.1-134_DFP-74
Remember to make nandroid backup etc ... study this defy FAQ/guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1216982
for Rooting I used SuperOneClickv2.3.3-ShortFuse
I used 2ndInit v2.0 from here (it has integrated busybox and CWM aka ClockWorkMod):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=12837303
Then i installed the epsylon cm7.2 defy+ nightly directly over my stock rom using "2) How can I install CM7.1?" in this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1065798)
have fun!
p.s. a lot of different roms can be tried without having to upgrade SBF and blow those damned efuses.. do some reading around here on fixed SBFs and nandroid backups and you will understand more
Thanks for suggestions. I already have CWR and Snd Init. I will try CM in the weekend.
EDIT: writing from CM72, I could not resist. At a quick look... it is another phone
Some occasional app crash, but works great.

A little update and a big thanks.
Everything works fine here on CM 7.2.
The difference in fastness of CM is impressive, camera works and battery charges to 100%. It seems CM consumes a bit more battery but it worthes it.
The only feature which is significantly worse than the original are the vocal commands which does not understand italian at all, but the applications itself is ok.
I will investigate on that.
Does anybody know if CM 7.2 (whenever it will be out) will OFFICIALLY support Defy+?
I could not find anything neither here nor on CM forums.
Stock - Cyanogenmod 7.2
yes from what i understand the CM7.2 Nigtlies will become official when once they are stable Epsylon/Quarx (and maniac103 ?) are working as part of official CM team..
hi guys!
i have a annoying issue with this nightly version(cm72-120127.0846-NIGHTLY-Defy+). my wifi shot dawn after ~20 min, when im not using my phone (i dont switch on the screen) its a bug or thers a setting for solve that problem?

It works fine if I start from 2.3.6? I've got me too the MB526 form Vodafone (si sono italiano pure io ).
What do you think about this room after 2 days? Yes, it's not a long time...but...i cloud not resist me too!!!!!!!
I don't know coming from 2.3.6, but coming from 2.3.4 I was really impressed.
PROs:
- phone is much more responsive
- switching wifi and silent mode on/off very fast and no need to confirm which wlan each time
- I got rid of Motoblur (common inbox is awful)
- audio volume increased
VSs:
- some occasional app crash
- camera works but the impression is a little less quality
- original vocal commands worked much better
From what I understood 2.3.6 should be ok as you don't flash kernel, but backup backup and backup again!
@lord: if the phone is idle why you need wifi? I would not notice that, but I will take a look.

Hi your posts were very helpfull to me, cause you have the same phone and build as I do. However, installing a CM7.2 on my Defy+ is still unsuccesfull.. As you said, I did not install a different SBF, but root my phone, install 2ndinit an made a nandroid backup (which I am now restoring after a failed ROM load )
I follow the steps in the topic you gave, but the problem is that my 2ndinit (CMW) says: "E:/Can't open /tmp/recovery.log" when I load the zip file from my SD card (after wiping cache and data). Pretty annoying. I tried now with "cm72.120127.0846-Nightly-Defy+" and a non Defy+ and more recent one: "CM72-20120304-NIGHTLY-Defy.zip"
Have been googling the error message, but most people say it happens when the wrong CM is used (not for Defy+) but I am doing that right..
Which version of CWM did you install?
After you install 2nd init for defy and open the app there are two options:
Stable recovery
Latest recovery.
I think you installed the stable recovery. If yes, now try installing the Latest recovery and install CM7. If no may be we will have to figure out something else!
I did choose the stable version indeed 0.6.7.
Now i did uninstall it and installed the latest 1.0.7, but when I reboot my phone it won't get into the boot menu but just boots into android. Tried it several times, but only with 0.6.7 I seem to be able to get in the menu
I have white rabbit 1.3 right now and it came with a bunch of cool customizing installation options though aroma, including ICS style which runs ADW instead of GO, much cleaner/faster, also my battery life is awesome. or you could download CM7 Barebones Jordan and build your own. I'm pretty sure I found both ROMs somewhere in these pages.

Unable to use ICS 4.0.3

HI all,
Am using Defy MB525
Yesterday I tried to install ICS 4.0.3 Mar 17 build for defy+,I did factory reset and installed from SD card (ICS build,Gapps,Batteryfix),I didn’t flash any kernals like one of our forum member told, But my defy is stucked on boot logo.I tried many times but doesn’t work So again am back to 2.3.7 Version. My kernel version 2.6.32.9-gb08c3c8
Why this happened to me?
What is the procedure?
If you dont know what you are doing dont install.ics is still beta its a nightly ..and is improving day by day moreover hwa 2D is still missing without it..cm9 is just a theme like Gb..i would say better stick to stock..or flash quarx defy+ cm7 nnightly..

Sorry, I've only flashed CM9 on my defy+ and I have kernel 2.6.32.9-gbdd614e etc. I't's not exactly the same, so maybe I'm wrong about not flashing the CM9 kernel! I actualy think you have froyo kernel!
EDIT: Yes, you have FROYO kernel! Go ahead and flash the CM9 kernel! Sorry
you must flash the SBF of 2.3

If you don't know what you are talking about, then just DON'T! If he flashes stock sbf 2.3, he will never be able to go back to Froyo. All he needs to do is flash the CM9 GB kernel.
As Auris told never flash 2.3 SBF until you DONT want to downgrade! What you said you did is absolutely fine. Just flash CM9GB kernel and it will work. But anyways I don't understand why would you want to flash the CM9 Defy+ ROm because Defy ROM is likely to be updated sooner and CM officialy support Defy!
My fault! In an other thread he didn't specify all those numbers after 2.6.32.9-gbdd so I thought he had gingerbread kernel and told him to flash the plus builds!

Should I install CM9 kernel?

I have a Defy, installed the 4.5.1 DHT25 rooted SBF.
Then I install CM9 using the instructions stated in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1618904
When I reboot, it goes to flash rom screen, showing error:
Err: A5,70,00,00,3D
Should I install the CM9 kernel as stated?
or as I'm using the 2.3.6 Defy+ SBF, I don't need to install CM9 kernel?
Ya u should install
I think cm9 won't work with 4.5xx kernels

You are using a 2.3.6 DEFY+ SBF? It's bl6 or bl7, either way you can not flash those kernel zips, they are meant for lower bl versions. Make sure you are flashing a Gingerbread (or jordanplus or DEFY+, it's named in many ways) ROM and skip the kernel flashing step.

What the hell? See this - link. Can you see 4.5.x in the middle of the name of every of those stock sbf files? Any ROM built for Gingerbread will work with any of those kernels.
Hi,
That partially answered my query. I would welcome if you could answer my query in some detail.
On my defy with green lens I first ported original stock Froyo then installed GGL ROM. After that I installed CM9-NIGHTLY-120617-Defy.zip but did not install any kernel.zip as suggested by other forums. And then installed gapps-ics-4.0.3-20111217 and most of the things including Opera Mobile, Camera except panorama/FC on stop thereof and GPS and few apps that I use. Opera Mini is not working where I live even via 3G.
Now my question was whether any GB kernel marked for Defy (or even Defy+) work for such CM9-ICS update.
My current kernel via GGL is [email protected] #1 Wed Apr 6 15:55:29 CST 2011.
Is there any other better kernel than the above that you my suggest?
Thanks.

If you flash a Gingerbread kernel (also named CM9 kernel) your camera won't work. Green lens doesn't have compatible drivers on Gingerbread.
Why would you want Opera Mini when you have Opera Mobile working?
If you want a fully functional ROM, I suggest you switch to some of the CM7.2 builds or MIUI Pikachu Edition or WIUI GB. These are all great, stable, fast and pretty much bug-free.
As for the kernels, changing them doesn't help much in my experience, but I do know that Epsylon somehow added some libraries (thought they are onlu meant to fix wifi tethering on CM9 as far as I know) in the Froyo kernel available on his site. You could try it - http://defy.wdscript.fr/kernel/ . (This one: kernel-froyo-222-179-4-signed.zip)
I see that you used the oldest gapps possible, I'm not sure why. Get the latest zip from here (ics version is for CM9, yes) - http://goo.im/gapps/
So, what I suggest to you if you want to stick with CM9:
1 - get the latest gapps, get that kernel and you already have the latest CM9
2 - full wipe (data/cache/dalvik)
3 - install zip - kernel
4 - install zip - ROM
5 - install zip - latest gapps
6 - wipe cache and dalvik (not necessary)
7 - reboot and see how it goes
Panorama still won't work after that, that's for sure, but I don't know what other problems you've experienced....
But why doesnt it work with 4.5.x kernels?
Mine s defy ...I'm using cm9 ( defy + gb kernel build) so cm9 doesnt bootup wid those kernels...why?

its work on DEFY
im on CM9-NIGHTLY-120609-Defy+.zip and 4.5.2_DHT-22_kernel work great
but u MUST flash cm9 kernel ...reboot and 4.5.2_DHT-22_kernel...
i dont know why it happened but i forgot to do it many times and my defy cant get even to recovery
i need to flash full SBF to fix this...i hate when its happened....(i will really glad if there are other way)
i really hope for that u done backup for your apps
p.s.
u must flash DEFY+ version for GB kernel
and DEFY for Froyo kernel
Thank you niksy on your info on kernels. However CM9 works well on defy with green lens except for the panorama mode.
I found the old gapps smaller in size. However after your post I reinstalled a later one.
I prefer Opera mini as it has a smaller mem footprint. Since mini is not working here I use Boat browser mini which is quite comparable to Opera mini in speed,
However I have one issue on CM9 when I copied SIM contacts. My phone book got bloated to over 3 times the size with some of the entries duplicated from 2 to 5 times!
With MIUI/WIUI/WP7 I feel the originality of Android is lost with those boxed icons.
Besides I read in one of the posts in xda that WIUI ICS is based on CM9.

Defy+ from MIUI to CM10 Jelly Bean (Quarx's Build)

Hi guys,
i know that there might already be an existing thread about this but i wouldn't create one if i had found something that helps me.
Im using a Defy+ with Miui 2.3.2 and i really want to move to CM10 Jelly Bean.
I've found a really cool thread from Quarx and Epsylon about installing CM10 on a Defy+.
I already downloaded the newest release (04.09.) zip file and also the google apps and put both on my SD card.
But as it seems and as i have heard, it's not possible to move from a NON-CM version like MIUI to a CM version by going the typical steps (booting phone in recovery mode, choosing the Quarx zip file and installing it).... or am i wrong?
Can i just put firmware and google apps on my SD card and install that zip from recovery mode and everything's working well?
I didn't mention to wipe the dalvik cache here cause it's just a detail. I just wanna know if this MIUI to CM transformation is possible.
Hope you can help me, i really wanna use Quarx's CM10 cause i've heard it's amazing.
Thank you guys
is there noone who can help me with this or at least give me a link to another thread that already deals about this?
I don't think there would be any problem provided you wipe data/cache/dalvik before flashing CM.

ahhh, now i remember which problem there was with changing from MIUI to CM.
Doesnt MIUI use another kernel than Quarx's newest CM?
Unless and utill you downgraded your kernel to the froyo one, you won't have any issues. I have flashed WIUI GB version for Defy+ and for me the kernel is still the stock one.
Can anyone hep me with this? I had miui then tried to flash cm10, i followed all the steps but when booting up for first time it got stuck miui screen. I guess this means i have the wrong kernel but im not sure how to correct it

1. Flash a new kernel OR
2. Flash your stock SBF, re-root and go from there OR
3 (New option now) Flash the latest quarx JB CM10 with custom kernel included.

[Q] Confirming the need to downgrade before Aurora -> CM7.2?

I was just reading the guide on installing CM7.2, as my current rom (Aurora ICS), although good, is pretty unstable and buggy on my handset.
I noticed the guide specifically mentions I need to downgrade to official Froyo before trying to install CM7.2.
I have obviously already got CWM on there, so I just want to clarify if I still need to downgrade to an official Froyo rom, or can I just install CM7.2 over the top of my Aurora ICS?
Thanks.
