[Q] Stuck at 100% of backup using Update Cab Sender - Omnia 7 General

Hello, I recently flashed my Omnia with mi7ROM 8773 and wanted to perform a backup using Update Cab Sender. Everything seemed fine untill the progress hit 100% and sat there for what seemed an eternity. I waited half an hour, but nothing happened, so I disaconnected and powered off. The backup however does not show up in Zune. The same happened with EasyBackup tool. This ROM should be updatable via Cab Sender, so I have no clue where the problem is, in this way I am not able to update in the future, please, help. Thanks in advance.

Yes with this ROM is possible to update via CAB sender
Please Read Info about update over cab sender by mirolg
For Back-Up i think is possible but when will be an update available

Yes, I am aware of that, problem is, the update process did not even have a chance to start, as the backup preceding it got stalled.

What you wish to update via CAB Sender?
Before update with CAB Sender you have installed "if needed install this tool"?

Right now, I don't want to update anything, I have a freshly flashed ROM and installed all my apps and stuff neatly set up, so I just wanted to perform a backup of this state. As for your second question, yes, I did install that tool.
PS: The opening post contains logs collected by UCS if anyone wants to have a look.

When there is an update to do just press B "Send to device Cabs with (B)ackup"
I don't think you can do a Backup using the CAB Sender without put an Update

I already did that multiple times, all you need to do is to put ANY update cab into the folder, it does not matter if the update is already installed. The tool will display an update failure, but the purpose is to make a backup, which is done. Yes, I know the routine, B for Backup before update, S for sending cabs to device directly without a backup before that. My problem is that I am not able to perform a backup. If there was a real update available, I would not b able to install it with the B option.

Hello, I use mi7rom_v1b_6 lang_05.04.12_tango 8773_FW_11.11.2. Your ROM is btw excellent. I know it's bit off-topic, but I'm experiencing another problem - on several occasions the phone failed to boot and ended up with a plain red screen and I had to force power off. This happened several times, but on one occasion as much as three times in a row, it booted successfully on the 4th try. I did not make any non- standard tweaks. As the author, you could be the best to look into these issues. I also wonder if anyone else is having them. Thanks for the great job an your reply.

the full red screen after boot can causes on the tweak "fix 32- bit mode". look in advanced Config app and if is selected, then unselect it.

Hi, yesterday, I tried a backup again, with the same result, but this time the backup showed up in Zune. So I went ahead and tried the cab version of contable's skin and all went fine. Then I tried to restore to the backup made and all seemed fine, but the restoration process got stuck at 99% at this time. Then the phone rebooted, but went again to download mode. I disconnected, but it did that again and again. So I ended up with a half-bricked device that I needed to re-flash. Now I wonder what might be the cause. The thing is, all this went down on my second computer, so it is perhaps unrelated to the PC side.

Anyone else had any probs?
Another forum member had this same problem when installing the ClearVuePDF Reader also supplied by o2 as part of the HTC application suite. He has the MDA, but flashed with the o2 Exec ROMs and then installed in Corporate mode.
From work we did together, it appears to be just the install program that was not validating his device. When I tried a hard-reset and Corporate mode install, I had no problems installing. However, its beginning to look as though a hard-reset does not totally clear the Exec's memory. In his case, I found all the individual files and registry settings needed for ClearVuePDF to run and he copied those to the device. Runs perfectly for him like that.
So I'm afraid you'll have to find somebody with the o2 version of GPSMonitor installed and get them to determine all the files/locations and registry-settings needed to get it to run. Unfortunately I don't have a GPRS connection or GPRSMonitor installed.
Just a thought. Have you yet tried a full o2 Personal mode install on your device? It just might be this action that puts 'something' in memory that is not cleared by a hard-reset, and that 'something' might be what the install program is looking for.
Sorry that I can't be more helpful.
No problem thanks for your help

I did a basic install and I get the same error. Sorry, Not much help though.

Me too. The ClearVuew PDF reader is rubbish! Text misalighed all over - Adobe with pixel doubling is better than this.
Please try this
Could one of you having a problem to install the o2 supplied GPRSMonitor, please try installing the attached .CAB after copying it to your device.
This CAB is extracted from the CD-ROM install program, so hopefully skips the validation stuff. With luck you might be able to get around the failed validation by installing from this CAB.
Note: Even if asked to install to Storage Card, the o2 supplied version (2.3.0 build 600) puts very little there, most goes into device memory. The current version 2.41 from spb will obey the instruction to install to SD-Card, but wasn't reliable when run from there - the monitoring part aborted four times in 10-minutes whilst I was playing with it.
Unfortunately, since I don't have the install problem, I can't test this install out.
It works a treat. Thanks muchly!

Am I glad about that - I was in the midst of trying to locate all the files/registry entries needed for a manual install.
Perhaps I can go to bed now!
I also managed to 'locate' another copy and it works fine, thanks for all the help.

I can confirm this but with other files. After several hard resets (even with the clear storage icon), the pictures I had taken were still there.

Ouch! I didn't realsie it was as bad as that.
The situation is made worse by the backup program I'm using (Sunnysoft Backup Manager) not backing up all the data and settings. Neither does it perform a true restore - just merges the backup with what's there after the hard-reset.
Unfortunately, I'm used to HP's backup applet from the Jornada 928; which performed a total backup/flush restore. Are there any other applets for WM5/universal that really performs a full backup/restore?
Does anyone have this cab please? I have just bought a new O2 exec and am having the same problem with it saying my ROM version is too old!!
sorry ignore that post! Work computer blocked the file out
I am running my XDA EXEC in basic mode. When I tried copying the .cab file to my device and running it from there , still get the problem.
Any suggestions ?
I was running personal mode then switched to basic mode, could this cause the problem.
Thanks for you replies in advance.
Cannot remove GPRS monotr app
I installed this file to test it out om M3000. Unfortuntely I cannot seem to uninstall it now! It doesnt show up in my Program list - How do you uninstall it?
I looked in the \\windows folder and removed all files and shoretcuts I could find, but its still showing up on my 'today' screen with an error.
Any ideas? The registry?
Cheers

Linuxgeek:
I was also getting the ROM version problem installing programs to my SD card on my O2 exec. Since I'd only just added the card and was running the basic installation, I did the following:
1) Hard reset
2) Personal Install
3) Re-install ActiveSync on PC
This did the trick. Thankfully I like the Personal install best anyway, but I don't know if that step was necessary.
Tried it. Still get the problem :-(
My mistake - I managed to install the Clearvue PDF program, not the GPRS monitor program. I'm still getting the ROM version error with the GPRS monitor program, but I've not tried the above download yet.
Anyone got any other ideas to fix this problem.
Shame O2 don't have an update to fix this problem on their website.
I've now tried the CAB posted above by astage and I can confirm it worked for me. Just copy the CAB to your device and then open it to start the install.

Backup Software Found!

I bought Spb Backup a couple of days ago and have just had a major problem with no option but to hard reset.
Spb Backup... wow!
It put me right back to where I was before, applications, Registry hacks all my vga settings.. the lot! its like I never even did a hard reset!
The backup file was stored on the SD card and its an excutable, you just run it, correct the clock and hey presto jobs a goodun! 8)
oh and activesync didnt see any difference!
Did you notice any duplication of application icons, something I notice in another backup application?

Haven't tried that, I don't see why not. The only problem that you might have is if you have scheduled backups setup.. because the app needs to wake the system and the SD card may not be ready quick enough. I have mine installed in the extended ROM.
Download the trial and give it a shot
How do you install it to extended ROM?
One problem I found with SPB Backup, whilst backing up, it hangs at midpoint and then finally finishes but with an error message stating that file 'history.txt' wasnt backed up. Happens everytime. Any idea why?
Thanks. Cheers
I have been trialling this in Beta for a month or so. Even the beta's were good.
However, I do recommend anybody that is considering using it after a failure or error, to hard reset the device prior to the restore, otherwise it overrides and adds to what is already there, so if there are extra files and extra registry entries, they will remain.
The originals will all be restored correctly though, so you are unlikely to detect a problem.
I have restored, and hard reset on many occassions throughout the beta, and it works a dream.
Is it possible to backup, upgrade to a new complete ROM and then restore?
Or when you upgrade to a new rom you cannot use older ROMs backup?
Thank you.
I dont believe you can restore over an upgraded rom.
primarily cause the rom files are not copied. my entire backup, compressed 11mb.
you probably could, and when we were fiddling with WM2003SE for the himalaya model, we used this peculiar feature to do that.
YOu might try it and see, but some of the system files, dlls and hidden files may get modified some how, dont know enough about it. depends on the size and extent of the upgrade, it will probably work, but maybe a little unstable.
Either way, its not recommended. What I do is a fresh rebuild without syncing, with all my registrations, connections, and website usernames and all customisations done, and then call it a "virgin" backup, so that it can always be a perfect starting point for a base machine on a new ROM. This is then kept for te life of that ROM incase I want to go back to a nice clean environment without to much effort.

You shouldnt, bacause you need to restore the registry to make your apps working again but in the new ROM the registry structure or data may (and normally do) change, so you would corrupt the new rom

Problems on my JASJAR
First of all it duplicates Alarm notifications on my JASJAR. Secondly if you hard reset the device and then restore the backup, it always hangs at almost 100%. Had to cancel the restore and restart the device. But once restarted, it looks like everything is restored despite that restore hangup. But i am not certain, might be some problem in restoring with i come across later in future.
Can't depend on it.

Question about uninstalling trial software

I have been using a small utility to SHOWS MY PHONE NUMBER on the today screen AND SWITCH SIMS. The utility has a 15 day trial. This software was "modded" to work in WM5. The official version only works in 2003SE. While it works OK in WM5, there are many bugs. Unfortunately, the company no longer is working on this utility, so no WM5 compatibility.
What I did was install the utility. The 15 days counts down. After 15 days it stops working. Very normal.
Because I need this utility, I want to install and reinstall it. Here is what I tried to do:
1) I installed a clean ROM. Made a registry backup using SKTools right away.
2) Installed utility
3) When 15 days is up, I uninstall
4) Tried restore original registry using SKTools
5) Reinstall utility
Unfortunately, the utility is still expired. How can this be? Normally, a program puts "keys" in the registry to indicate status. If I restore the registry to before the utility was ever installed, all traces of the utility SHOULD BE gone. What else can the utility be reading that is not unstalled? Another registry somewhere? Am I missing something?
Please help because I do use this and would buy it if it was ever made to work with WM5 by the developer. Until then I have to find a work around.
Thanks for any help.
Could the begining date from which the countdown started have been imbedded in the software at the time of the download from the website to your PC?

I don't think so, because if I flash a new ROM and install the software, it goes back to 15 days trial. I don't want to reflash my ROM every 15 days. So it must be reading the original install date from somewhere other than the registry. Any ideas where?

You only need to make a WinDiff comparison - or, use SKTracker. I've published a complete tutorial on this: http://forum.brighthand.com/showthread.php?t=215073
Nevertheless, it's not only the Registry that can hold such files / info, but als the file system (mostly under \Windows) and the WinCE databases.

Sure you can - just keep track of what has been changed upon installation / first start. SKTracker is an excellent tool in this respect.

Problem restoring SMS with PIMBackup on Alex-V ROM (WM6.5 23529)

Hi,
I just flashed my Orbit 2 with the W6.5 ROM from Alex-V. Followed the howto from
fktsndr (Thread ID: 384084). Then I restored my SMS via PIMBackup. I just chose SMS to restore. However I got weird results. The SMS have wrong date stamps, cut text, wrong mapping of SMS body text to sender. When I go to my SMS folder it seems that their is an ongoing process which adds messages. After a while the system hangs. If I reset after 10 mins. I just see the O2 Splash screen and system hangs, so I have to do a hard reset.
I' ve got around 1500 SMS. Restoring contacts and call history works fine.
I tried wm6.5 German com5 23529 alex-V (flip clock)_10.02_input 2.1.rar and wm6.5 German com5 23529 alex-V 10.02 input 2.1 lite.rar
Hope somebody can help me. Thanks in advance!
Best regards
Andreas

but anythere...i don´t have problems with this...but can you try install pim backup new...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=299705
Hope it help....
edit: have you flashed like this...the way you flash is very important
If you have problems after flash my rom....restart....flash Orginal rom + hard reset if you see the calibration screen after that flash my rom also with a hard reset....after a complete boot a soft reset
edit 2: in your previous rom have you threaded sms or normal ...??
edit 3: try a other backup file...and is it the same with a other file..??
Thank you for the quick answer!
I'll repeat the flashing and I will carefully follow your instructions. Hope this helps. Actually since you have the same device. I come from W6.1 (original O2 branded) where I had threaded SMS. When I try other backup files or even I use the same file again I got different results. All are weird.

mmhh..strange...so please try a reflash with the flash instructions....it´s very very important to flash this way...i have also problems if i flash any rom and make it not like the explained way...
but if the problem after flash is the same...try to reinstall pimbackup...and let me know...
edit: have tried again and restore a pim backup file...and it´s ok...no problems...
So I followed your instruction, but same result. The step where I am not sure is after I did the the hard reset after installing the original rom. You wrote I should then flash your rom. Does it matter whether I boot with original rom, connect with ActiveSync and then flash according to the instructions of the Flash Tool or shall I go into boot loader and then flash?
It all sounds strange for me. Because according to my experience with other computer stuff it either works or it doesn't. Strange behaviour like restoring half the sms on a weird way and at same time Windows, Internet, and all the tools, I tested, operating (slow) but reliable doesn't sound like a flash problem as more as an incompatibility of PIM Backup with W6.5. May be the bug occurs only with a certain number of SMS.
Problem nailed down: I figured out that I cannot restore my SMS even on the original ROM so it seems to be more a problem with a corrupted archive.
Fortunately I have a fallback with a dumped ROM respectively a Sprite Backup. Cross fingers that that works. ****y PIM Backup.

for flash...after hard reset the original rom...it boots and the calibrtion screen comes again...i flash my rom....

In my case PIMbackup is not trully wm6.5 compliant. I think it has a high peak of resources consumption so sometimes is simply gets the ppc frozen, At least in my case, the same backup file gets loaded or freezes the ppc, depending on how many things load at the same time, etc. Most of the times after a soft reset everything is there so it is not a big issue in my case.
Have you tried MyPhone? I do not use any more neither PIMBackup nor ActiveSync since I tried MyPhone ... (I resisted since windows software tends to turn my skin red!)

I have found out, that for some reasons PIM Backup is not working correctly all the time. During Backup it throws sometimes some messages, that it cannot access certain files. After that it ends normally but I cannot find the backup file anywhere.
In the end I managed somehow to restore my SMS. However I did this using Megan ROM. Therefore I restored the original system, did the backup again as plain text (not binary), had contacts and SMS in anextra file. Flashed the new ROM and restored everything. Now I am too annoyed of all the flashing, so that I won't test it with Alex's ROM again.

The important question is if there are any oem updates out, and if there are if anyone can capture their urls.

Tried updating using the force update method, Zune came back with "Update ready for 7.10.8779.8", which I tried to update to, but then during the backup the update failed. I'm pretty sure the 7.10.8779.8 is a Nokia only update, but I am not sure.
Will try updating again over the next few days, see what happens.

Let me know how and i will try on my one, have an extra with broken touch input that I am more than happy to use to test on even if it was a "nokia" only update
8779 is a generic update, and it always has been.
It was simply not released widely and noone bothered to leak the update urls.
You have to upgrade though 8779 to get to 8858, everyone that recieved updates to 8858 did so

"Simply open Zune and go to the Settings. Now instead of just clicking on the 'Update' button and waiting, what you need to do is disconnect your computer from the internet while Zune is still checking for the update. You need to do this about 3-4 seconds after you see the 'Checking for Updates' progress bar pop up. It may take a few tries, but eventually it should work."

Just updated unlocked T-Mobile Dell Venue Pro using Cab Sender method. Worked like a charm!
IT WORKED!!!!
My backup was taking too long on the force update method, so I deleted all my music and videos and some of the apps, then had to perform the force update method 3 times, and the last update was 7.8!!

I updated using cab sender method, and it worked like a charm. However, as I notice, a contact still miss the entry of "Mobile 2" (unlike Windows Phone 8). Do all of you think it's as intended to miss this entry?

What does that mean? I dont use my VP as a primary.
Do you mean that for a contact with 2 stored phone numbers it doesnt allow you to enter it/it doesnt pick it up when searching/something else?

Hi Manii, in Windows Phone 7.8, you're able to save a contact with
Mobile
Home
Home 2
Work
Work 2
Company
Pager
Home fax
Work fax
However, on Windows 8 you have one more field: Mobile 2. The shortcoming from Windows 7.8 is, once one of my friend has more than 1 number, I will have to store the second one as "Home", not "Mobile 2" and this number can not be texted directly (SMS).
We can workaround it, however stock support is better for sure!

You're right about that: I can confirm that mobile 2 is strangely missing, WP7 itself simply does not support it.
You can add "mobile 2" via the win8 people app or the the people section of live.com and it simply does not appear.
MS/Live accounts simply are not able to handle custom labels on fields period, if you're like me and use gApps as your primary account source and have custom labels: they simply do not appear at all via live connected apps (wp7/win8/live.com).
You would need either to be less descriptive or have multiple entries to replicate the same thing via live accounts.
You cant even manually create a "mobile 2" label and expect it to show up under wp7.
You would need to completely bypass live accounts to add custom fields, it's an inherent limitation of live.
That or live with the fact you would simply have no way of syncing at least that to live.

If you're already on Tango (8773), just download these CABs: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=37384687&postcount=1478, repeating procedure separately for each update pack. Actually, I always used English (US) language, so downloaded only corresponding packages:
For first update downloaded:
http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/software/dflt/2012/05/diff-7.10.8773.98-7.10.8779.8-armv7-retail-microsoft.pks_b9598a098a3a4e902d043cef778a79ff3e6b0869.cab
http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/software/dflt/2012/05/diff-7.10.8773.98-7.10.8779.8-armv7-retail-microsoft.lang_0409.pks_4d87f62a11c7898a516df7563a9333e1082fad57.cab
And installed using CAB Sender (for instructions on using it, look at this post).
Then, did the same for two other update packs.
Second one:
http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/software/dflt/2012/10/diff-iucorefixed-7.10.8779.8-7.10.8783.12-armv7-retail-microsoft.pks_8a50b92b21951c7baf9f3600cea8c77e0918021f.cab
Third one:
http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/software/dflt/2012/11/diff-7.10.8783.12-7.10.8858.136-armv7-retail-microsoft.pks_d6fb2a271eed6a5d1187b17aba60806753d0ffce.cab

Of course, if you use other language than English (US), you will need other lang packs from each update as well (notice *lang_0409* in package names here).
After installing 3rd update pack, you will be successfully running Windows Phone 7.8.
Good luck!

ya it works, I got my Tmobile DVP up using the cab sender method to 7.8.
Someone wanna comment on the firmware for the bootloader/radio etc?
Here are my Specs:
OS: 7.10.8858.136
Firmware: 2250.1800.7720.219
Hardware: 112.576.2.0
Radio: 2.2.50.18
Bootloader: 7.27.1.0
To be honest I feel that 7.8 made the device slower for me. 7.5 Mango was much faster. Just my experience.
