Hi
I have a couple of questions re the so called camera trick.
Is it correct that you should activate the camera , then switch to video , let it autofocus and then press "home" key ??
If this is the case it leaves the camera running in the back ground as an "open" application. How can that conserve power ??
What is the logic behind the camera trick ???
Is it applicable to all custom roms?
All help / responses gratefully7 received

seems strange but battery drain is much lower with camera trick
seems photo camera automatically drain battery with autofocus and with switching to video this turn off photo camera autofocus and stay off when video camera active
it's applicable to all custom ROM's with radio 5.51

That's suggests the camera is always on ! Strange . Maybe it's part of the options "intelligent" phone ( cant remember the exact name and don't have my phone in front of me now) Like go silent when turned face down. If i remember correctly there's a "pocket mode" that turns the ringer volume up. Maybe the phone uses the camera to detect when its in " a pocket"
Still quite confused as to how this "trick" works !!

I read somewhere that driver for the video camera flash has a bug and keeps running in the background. The "camera trick" switches off the flash. Also, if you check after a while you'll see that camera stops running in the background.

Strange .. my battery becomes also better with Trick..

start camera, switch to video, press focus down, and press home button (video camera must stay active in background)... best is to make buttons configuration for this... i make this: green/camera, home/home, win/focus down, back/back
going to load koval rom which comes with soft radio 5.71
i can change the radio to a 5.51 to get the camera trick but am i losing anything with an 'older' radio?
i read that i can only change the soft radio with a full reinstall, is that still correct?
thanks
only way to install software radio is flashing ROM with this radio....
no other way...

mine is...
after pressing half to focus, of course i need to press all to take the shot right?
but when i do so.. it defocus and refocus again usually...
if not while focusing, it will stop
it is as though the button has problem... anyone else have same prob?
same thing did happens in my x1 too..
reset to default setting would fix the problem temporary, n then it start defocusing again while pressing the cam button half away down to shutter..
my camera button was like this as well....
and i got a new replacement phone after going to the service centre.
you guys should do the same too...
I am not sure if I understand your problem, so if a am wrong ignore me .
From my expierience it means that it cannot focus correctly (especially in 'manual-focus' mode), mostly due to low-light since the Xperia uses contrast-based-autofocus.
One or more 'green blocks' (on automatic focus) indicate a successfull focus, does it do that at your devices?
nah.. i am a camera user.. its not.. its a problem... but hardware or software?? returning it is a hassle sigh
if you guys are looking for a quick fix to this, simply use the optical joystick button instead of the camera button to take the pic.
on a side note, i had the same exact problem on my old k800i, i just used the joystick to take pics instead of the camera button on the side of the phone.

That's not the smartest question. You could have pushed the button quicker and seen that it's automatic.
thats not the friendliest reply... most "photographer" will need a focus lock function .. hence asked about it..
anyway i went to SE and they told me nothing wrong with my button.. maybe software.. they will refresh the whole thing...
i got owned.
updates,
refresh did not help...
so its not hardware its not software... hence?
the button is just lousy???
anyone has solutions?
when i click the camera button to open the camera it doesnt alway work either. and yh it doesnt take pictures.
All i know is that the camera sucks really really really bad!!!
Its slow on focus
its slow with taking a picture so the smallest movement make the picture blurry
its worthless in the dark
the light does not help unless its something close by.
only good thing is that i can use the light to walk around the house when its dark and i dont want to turn on the lights.
i dont understand why it sucks so bad.
sony makes good camera's
why is it so hard to make a desent camera that is fast with a flash.
other brand do it,............
mine doesnt even start-up my camera...any way to assign another key to the camera? otherwise its crap!
what i think it is the problem of the button. it is really a bad design and make it hardly to press. i have tried so many times so that i believe that it is not software problem. it is just the stupid camera button...
so, i use the "enter" button of the optical joystick to shoot instead.
the mechanics insisted nothing wrong with the button..
sigh..
using the joystick, wont u loss the feature of focus lock?
but mine is no problem. I wonder if the X1 sell in your countries have more bugs than the one sell in HK? Case cracking problems and camera problems.. and so on!!
Yesterday at a concert i was nervous because i cannot film dark places with my phone but i tried anyway. I started the camera, used on/off to put phone in standby and soon after called it back to life to check time. i pressed the camera button to delete the video but the camera started overlaying today screen and i saw it was working perfect in total darknes where lights flashed here and there.
this is new to me but i was able to film almost a full hour without glithing.
can you ppl with different ROMs duplicate this?
so i was thinking.. there must be something that starts/stops when you put phone to standby while camera is working.. cant we just make the phone start/stop that everythime we press camera button (when we find out what it is)?
call me idiot or whatever if what im saying is wrong
i noticed the same behavior some months ago, probably with a different ROM. didn't have an answer for this
topic has 51 views and only your reply. looks like its "normal" i guess
but with latest pcarvalho rom my TC is perfect, only camera sucks

1.Open your camera..
2.Put your fingers in front of the len
3.push the power button to bring device to stand by,and after 4 seconds,
push again to wake the phone.
4.Now release your fingers from the len and you have a very quick camera.
If you can't do it with the first time ,follow the steps and do it again

its working great
is there any way to work always... after close camera and open again you must do it again....
there is no need of holding your finger infront of camera or whatever its only done by standby->wakeup. but you have to be in darker-than-full-daylight place and it only works while you point at dark. if you point to light the thing somehow resets and its all over again.
i posted this because i want to know if we can somehow force this behaviour to allways. i am sure this is just a minor flaw in code. any programmer here with any ideas about this?
i cant believe no one cares about this...
Hi, i own a XDA Star (Nike 300) with the new WM 6.5 ROM 23517 and i can´t find a way to use the front camera. Someone has an idea?

Start your camera program, and in the menu, you'll see a button called Camera. (like in the picture that monx showed). Pressing this button allows you to switch between the front and back cameras.
Bear in mind that the front camera is not as good as the back camera.
Front camera
Unfortunately the button is blank and there is no reaction if pressed
I had a Niki with the front camera problem... the camera is phisically there, but there is no way to activate it... gotta send it to HTC in order to fix it
So its an hardware problem??
I have exactly same problem. Cant change between cameras and using videocall nobody sees me.
I remember using another ROM and use that camera...

I had that option a long time ago to swith cameras. No I've downgraded to the ROM, Radio and HardSPL I had when I was able to do video calls, and that option is not there anymore.
I think it's an hardware problem. Nothing to do. Got to send my nike to HTC. And for sure its not cheap.
once I just fixed the problem, but after some days, it came back again.
so i do not suppose that it is a hard ware problem.
The most important the place I live in there is no such service
Hey guys,
I've searched but I can't find an answer. I'm using an Incredible S ROM on my HD2 at the moment that leaves the hardware keys constantly on when the screen is on - I don't like this, and don't ever need the backlight for the keys as I know where they are now. Is there any way I can disable this totally?
Thanks,
Zuka

Hey,
if your build is using the same init script as rafdroid you can try this:
create a file called "config.txt" on the root of your sdcard copy/type this line: auto_btn_backlight=0 - then reboot.
this is also worked with dandiest builds, so Might work for you.
Hi, thanks for your reply
I'm not running one of Raf's or Dandiest's ROMs, mine doesn't have an init script so this won't work. Is there any other way? Seeing as those ROMs have different button backlight drivers I'm assuming there has to be a way to control their on/off states
I'm not trying to be annoying by bumping, but this keeps falling off the radar and I'm sure there's a way to do this, if anyone could point me in the right direction that'd be awesome

Sound like an unstable ROM. My only advice is to try a different one. If you like pure android you can try tytung's ROM. It's the best, just follow my sig.
...what?
Why does my ROM sound unstable? The button backlights aren't actually causing a problem, I just don't need them. Ever. I'm looking for a way to disable them, but I like (love) my ROM after months of searching

Hey
guessed u didnt have a rom from raf or dandi, they havent released an Incredible S build yet.
mind telling us which Incredible S you have or is it a secret
& you are right, it has nothing to do with stability, its the newer light drivers, this was implemented to fix the led notifications, not sure if you can change this (always on) behavior without going back to the old drivers.
p.s. how do you know your build doesnt have an init script, have you tried the config.txt?
Hey mate,
I'm using Korand's stripped down Incredible S build - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1019489
The reason I'm assuming it doesn't have an init script is because, apart from the battery percentage icon, I think everything else is stock, judging from Korand's first psot. It's hard to tell because there's not much support for the ROM
I wouldn't mind going back to the old light drivers though, or just rendering both the notification LEDs and button backlights inoperable. Don't use either really
bumpity bumpity yeah

Theres an app in android market for that...its called "ADJ Brightness" which basically allows yoy to adjust and lock the screen brightness. It can be set to extremely low (much lower than android lowest setting...or extremely high, again higher than android default max
But if you hit menu then chose "options" there near the bottom you will see the option to Lock the button lights OFF...works a treat and saves me a lot of battery jiuce. Also in this options menu you can chose to have the little charging led either On or Off...I find this used in conjunction with "button saviour" and another app that allows me to wake the phone with the volume rocker means i dont need to use the H/W keys at all
Dont know if this is what your after but hopefully it may help.
Thanks Con, I installed the app
It does let me control the hardware buttons, allows me to turn them off, but whenever I press them they just come back on again, despite checking "always off" in the settings
But at least this shows that they can be controlled, even on an HD2
any other ideas?
Ah, sorry zuka, i have only just noticed this as well...yes it seems the backlight does reactivate when i again use the buttons. However i am using Rafdroid 4.2 rom which allows the backlight to off after 10 seconds. So i guess your issue does lie within your rom
I no longer use the hardware buttons (or very rarely) instead i opt to use the onscreen replacments within button savior, Which is why i didnt notice that the backlight does re-activate when the buttons are used...this seems to overide the adj.bright app. But like i say my light is only on for 10 secs or not at all using adj & BS.
Sorry dude am at a loss as to how you could fix this as it does sound frustrating
Nah, thanks for your reply anyway. It's not like this is a horrible bug, it's just annoying because I don't want the hardware buttons at all, I know that they can be controlled but I just can't figure out how to keep the damn things off...
if anybody has any other ideas, I'd welcome them. at this point I'm stumped
Has anybody been thinking about this for a while and has a solution?
Hey
ADJ Brightness should do the work for you
just play with the setting( Menu-option)
lock screen brightness, so it stays off.
good luck
tried this app a while a go and it solved this problem.
Delete please

You have any source for the "upgrade camera fix"?
And replacing the front facing camera is not an option, the camera works just fine, it has to be a software bug.
Edit:
I tested what you said, updating the camera and it worked! Thank you so much!
Edit 2:
Nevermind, the bug is still there...

So my girlfriend's i9505 front facing camera is acting wierd. I think it happened when she upgrated to 4.3.
When using any effect with the front camera, the picture gets way too dark and you can mostly only see shapes. When you enable the "dual camera feature" and then disable it the camera gets normal again, but as soon as you change effect or re-open the front camera it gets dark again.
This doesn't happen with the rear camera though. If you select an effect with the rear camera and then switch to front camera, the pic is normal. But as soon as the problem appears, it stays there even if you switch cameras, and you have to close the camera app to get it normal again.
It's really wierd, I've wiped Camera data, wiped cache through recovery (stock rom/recovery, non-rooted), and I even did a factory reset but nothing, the bug is there.
Anyone else facing the same problem? Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
