Defy Battery Issue - Defy Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I successfully installed Cynogenmod 7.2 but the 99% battery thing is pissing me off. Yes I did use BatteryCalibrator and also tried deleting the battery file through advanced option via CWM.
But I still have the 99% battery thing. Whenever my cell reaches 100% and I unplug it and it goes to 99 instantly too. Any help? I seached almost everything but no help.

pure logic bro...it's 100% when u have it plugged in and then ofc it drops to 99% because it looses some mili amps
if u don't want to see that..just don't use any soft that shows u battery percentage

well maybe because of your battery usage in time, because it happens to me also, so maybe our battery has a lot of usage and in a future we need to change battery :/

The same problem here, i tried many batt fix but no one works. It has started since i first installed CM7.2 ( mine is defy plus ). Still keep searching. It's because of the kernel i guess. Anyway to change it ?

Do you have baterry drops while using? Like from 30% to 15% ? Cause i've found that and that's not cool
Sent from my MB525 using xda premium

Hi guys, I wouldn't accuse ROM or kernel, more I wouldn't bother too much, till I do not have to charge twice a day.
I have the same issues with two different phones at home, different kernels and different ROMs. Though I tried batt calibration and CWM wipe, it does not help. Both phones never reach 100% - go to 99% even if you charge for several hours then.
Sometimes I have 7% drop per 8 hours, sometimes 5% in 20 minutes - both cases only 2G is working (and of course some mess in background ;-)). I would rather accuse some applications working in background. Anyway rebooting helps.
For the case of sudden drop by 15% - do you have any task killer killing your batt widget? Or, may be, your battery widget is refreshed once per hour or so? Just proposals to check. (it is funny when task killer kills your clock widget - might be a lot of fun when you suddnely find you are two hours late. Know such case)

I'm having the exacte same problem with battery drops except that in my case i have 2 drops instead of 1, the first one at 70% and the second one at 30% or so...happened with 2 roms, stock and cm7.2...
Buying a new battery will most likely fix it ...isnt it??

The 100% to 99% when you unplug is not a problem. its because when it calculates the battery "%" it always takes the lower value
Example:
Battery level is 80.9 -> shows 80
Battery level is 99.999999999 -> it shows 99!
that is not a bug

Mine is also having this problem. Jumps from 30% to 20% instantly if the phone has been fully charged. However if I only charge it to 50% it does not jump.

WHen i used CM7 or CM9, there was no drop. But when i use MUIU Pikachu, i have drop ! from 70-49%
---------- Post added at 04:31 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:28 PM ----------
NOw i am using wiui and cant charge more than 81% ( defy plus )

Mine also drops instantly to 99% after unplugging, however it does not seem to affect the functionality of my phone. I got usually 40ish hours with ms2ginger4 and now I am testing it with quarx ics 0413 defy+ build to see what that drain is.
Also every time I install a new rom I use.

Works great for battery charge issues

Well in my case the problems came when I started changing roms frequently ... bought defy around September last year, started the custom rom changing week after purchase ( rom changing frequency was about a different a week ) ... and battery skips started happening around December . .... and from then m always searching for a solution to it ..... unsuccessfully

Seriously....batt stat is really bad...

Ok.....I read all the batt stat related post and I tried every single ways to extend my batt life.....here how I did
1. charging the phone more than 5 times when the phone is on.
2. turned off the phone and charged 5 times until 100 %
3. turned it on again and charged more than 5 times
4. then I did batt stat by using terminal emulator
5. then I charged again while phone was on for about 3 times
6. turned off the phone and charged again for 3 times
7. then I was using my phone and I let it die by itself
8.then I fully charged the phone
theses were the steps that I followed and my batt life sucks...like when I was using internet it drops every 2~4 minutes.....even though I dont use internet just playing around with the phone It drops that quick....I am very shock that some ppl are using the phone more than an hour and still its 100% gauge....its so amazing..i really wanna do that too.....and Im currently running SC2.8 non voodoo.....do I need to use voodoo to extend my batt life????
Any suggestions will greatly greatly greatly!!!! appreciated!!!!!!!! plz help noob out...plz......

Oh plus and im also running juice defender bc someone recommend to extend batt life not sure if it really helps....lol

umm....for the screen it takes 80% of the batt usage
and rest are just random stuff (about 4 different ones but they were only 1~2%)
I went to the movies at 2pm with 100% charge, I listened to online radio for 20 minutes on the way there, watched the movie and now its 7:30 and my phone is at 5%... Nothing is running in the background and my phone was in the packet the whole time.
Amazing that I can play angry birds on the iphone for 4 hours during my daughters recital and still have 30% battery left and this stupid samsung pos cant be on standby for 6 hours.

Do you have screen brightness set to "Auto", 80% is to much for regular use.

Was having weird issues myself (signal/Internet/battery).
For ****s and giggles I gave the DL09 radio a shot on EB01.
Have had really nice results the last couple of days.
Never made it to 4 hours of screen using the Internet before.
And it still had more.
good day.
it sounds like you are both experiencing a bad battery, or a very poorly set up phone. use auto brightness or manually turn down the brightness. make sure you don't leave apps running with the screen off if you can help it, and keep your radios off when possible.

Yes it does help...
To do proper full battery calibration just for one single time required a minimum of 20HRs, that's what needed for 3 full charge and recharge cycles.

Reset battery stats one time at battery full reading, then discharge and recharge for 3 full complete cycles without wiping the stats and you're done calibrating (~20HRS).

Show us your battery life!

It seems as though battery life is one of the most common topics among us vibrant owners. We are always looking to increase battery life, whether it be with a new rom, new kernels, or apps from the market. I wanted to start this thread for everyone to share their experiences, tricks of the trade, etc on getting the best battery life.
Post pictures, rom info, kernel info, app info, modem info, battery info etc! No pic, no proof!!!
This is the best I have been able to get with my phone with:
Bionix 1.3.1 - Stock kernel - KB1 modem - TW launcher - auto brightness off, set about 2 clicks from the left - battery calibration app used at 100% - Stock battery. Light / Light moderate usage, phone calls, texts, web searches. GPS on.

Well, this is great battery life you got there For me 24h is the most I can squeeze from my Vibrant with Project V/Bullet 1.42 kernel, auto brightness off, moderate usage. 16h with heavy usage... It's fully charged now so I don't have pics to show it
i used around 5% with in an hour with somewhat heavy usage this is cm7 nightly 71 bali with uv
srdjav - have you tried bali uv? I heard it works really well, especially with bi-winning, but I have heard great things about it on all different types of roms
gamikzone - impressive for cm7, I have read horror stories that the battery life on it wasn't all that great...but I guess with the kernel script and bali, it's way better!
@corpsetomb
Yes, I did tried Bali... But honestly, didn't see much difference in battery life. I have tried 4 different kernel on Project V and battery life was always 16-24h, depends of the usage. With extremely heavy usage 16h... So i decided to stay with Bullet 1.42.
But I didn't try Bi-Winning ROM yet... Maybe I will give it a try
But I had very bad experience with Super_DragonMODz 1.5 kernel... For a few hours everything was ok. But in one moment I picked up a phone after doing nothing for a half an hour and it was HOT! And I could smell "burning" inside Luckily when I took battery out and let the phone cool down, it was ok

haha what is this, a courtroom?
truly, none of this matters. one big factor in battery life is application use. in order to pinpoint someones battery usage, one would have to list, in detail, their application usage. which/how many apps poll for background data/how often? is the person using an autokiller/ram optimizer? which/how many apps stay open in the background, even when killed?
The bottom line is, battery life is ultimately determined by the user. there are only so many differences, in terms of battery, between these roms and kernels. none of them will give you a SIGNIFICANT difference. this is not the fault of the devs, they are not magicians.
This is why people do not get nice responses in rom/kernel threads when they ask "how is the battery life?". Then some clown who is a very light user will say "its great! i get 20hrs per cycle!!" and then you flash it expecting ground-shaking results...only you forgot that you have 317 apps on your phone (20 of which are constantly poll/checking for background data), and you use your phone/data like a whore who youll never see again. and unfortunately, there are horrible noobs out in there who, after doing this, will actually go back into the thread and say something like "DO NOT FLASH, MY BATTERY DOESNT EVEN LAST 8 HRS!!!!"
Theres only one true way to REALLY compare battery between ROMs/kernels (and it still isnt 100%trustworthy): download a ROM, try it out for a few days at moderate usage. Then flash the one you want to compare it to. Make sure you have the SAME exact setup as the ROM before (apps, brightness, GPS on/off, background data, etc.), and try to mimmick your usage with the other one. NOW you can effectively determine, relatively, which ROM may show better battery results for everybody. and then, when someone asks "does this have good battery?" you dont just say yes; you say "yes, i have seen noticeable improvement since coming from _______ rom, i about ___hrs more per full charge "
sorry for the rant

@TopShelf10
No worries, I welcome your input! I agree that a big factor in battery life is application use. You will see in the OP that I recommended people put in as much detail as possible along with their picture, such as what type of use, kernel, rom, etc. I would also like to hear and see comparisons between roms, that is part of what this thread is all about! To be able to compare different roms and see what helps based on usage.
Thank you for participating and your input!
Note: Do you guys think I should start a list of best battery life in the op?

You can manipulate the battery use stats pretty easily... at least on CM7. If I plug my phone in to charge for an hour, it doesn't reset my battery usage. Sometimes when I look at it it will say 24 hours+. Which I know is not at all accurate.

Careful battery status inaccurate %

Guys I noticed that when checking with *#0228# the battery status and you do a quick start the battery percentage drops radically 10-30% depends of the use of your phone. I remembered that I have read somewhere about the 5% left of the charge of the battery is left when a phone shuts down so battery doesn't get destroyed. Not sure if it is true or not.
But as I see it the percentage of battery left on notification bar isn't accurate.
Please check it on your phone and post if it happens to other phones. And if there is some more tech based guys outthere, to explain give a solution or a helpfully trick.

I think even though it might not be accurate, its will always be inaccurate the same surely, so eventually you'll learn how it reacts, so it does give you an idea of what's left.

What do you mean by "quick start"? - it's a known and fairly well documented aspect of our fuel gauge chip that heavy load immediately following a reset (such as rebooting) will cause it to report artificially low.

Use the dialer and give the code *#0228# it pops the battery information on the bottom is a button it says on it QUICK START on GB it would make a quick restart it think (black screen for 5-7 secs) now it only changes the block value of the battery and the charged percentage.

Doesnt come as a surprise, the indicator is not accurate as for other devices too.
AFAIK battery caliberation is a complicated process for which one may need kernels with special features.
its not something that can be done by an app from the market....

braxos,
did you just change ROM and/or Kernel ?
If yes, you would need to do a few cycles of charge-discharge, and clean the battery status.
I only experience like that when I just changing kernel (different kernel, not upgrade), and changing different ROM (different ROM also, not upgrade).
Otherwise, when the ROM and kernel stabilized alrd, I have never experienced such things.
Braxos said:
Guys I noticed that when checking with *#0228# the battery status and you do a quick start the battery percentage drops radically 10-30% depends of the use of your phone. I remembered that I have read somewhere about the 5% left of the charge of the battery is left when a phone shuts down so battery doesn't get destroyed. Not sure if it is true or not.
But as I see it the percentage of battery left on notification bar isn't accurate.
Please check it on your phone and post if it happens to other phones. And if there is some more tech based guys outthere, to explain give a solution or a helpfully trick.

Read the MAX17040 datasheet. Particularly the part about the assumptions the chip makes when starting - if those assumptions don't hold true, it'll read inaccurately for a while.
We have a MAX17042 but in our phone it's used identically to the older 17040.
Nothing new, it's the same deal as the "battery estimate drops artificially on a reboot" thing.
The battery protection circuit in the pack is not based on SoC estimate, it's based purely on voltage, so will always shut the phone off before damage occurs.

No, you don't need to do that. That only applies to "coulomb counter" type fuel gauges - which ours is not.
Wait 1-2 hours and do nothing but use your phone normally - that's it. Charge it if you want, discharge it, whatever...

Entropy,
I was on rooted stock rom and Notecore kernel (v11.5). I had a very good battery with no deep sleep issues and good 'On screen battery' time.
I flashed a new kernen (v12.0 I believe) & started experiencing battery drain issues. Still Deep sleep is very fine. But on screen battery drain is huge (>25%/hr).
Since then I have altered between Notecore and Speed mod kernels, but the issue persists. I have almost tried very method suggested in XDA to callibrate battery but no improvement seen. I am worried whether my battery is aged, but its only 9 months old.

nice, did you try cleaning before flashing the kernel, like jbroidscript?
Not all kernel versions are very good for battery life.
Did you also check if your battery is getting full charge? with android sensor you can see current charge left.
Screen on drain is usually around 25% unless playing games then its more. Note only is capable of 3-4 hours screen time with no games, with games its less.
just a few tips.

Thanks baz77.
Can you please guide me to correct Jbdroid script. The one i foound in XDA is put by JBlank and many senior members are calling it useless.
Battery charging is fine. Atleast all teh tools like Battery monitor widget, inbuilt, Badass monitor and as suggested androsensor are giving the same % readings and informs battery health to be good.
But its not a placebo effect. I can really battery draining nothing like before.

I guess the only way for you to find out, is take out the battery and compare it to a real genuine samsung battery.
In software this shouldn't be possible.
Although this thread is damn old: Simply delete batterystats.bin OR turn off the phone and let it charge to 100% when off. This also happens when you use an extended battery.
I too tried it before quick start the battery level was 56% and after quick start battery level dropped quickly to 26%

Best Battery ROM

OK so i installed almost every ROM on there and here is what i found.
TOP.
:good: CleanGB ---- Takes the crown, super fast battery charge in less then 45minutes the battery is full. Over a period of 8 hours in stand by(as i sleep) the battery did not drop at all.
CM9 ---- Took over 2.5 hours to charge the battery, in 8 hours it dropped 12% battery life.
CM7 --- Charged in 1.7 hours and dropped 17% battery in 8 hours.
The rest were terrible, I would not even bother.
All configuration were the same. Everything off (wifi, gps, etc)
After all i installed CleanGB again at the end. And guess what in the past 8 hours battery did not at all in standby. My phone last 3 days on the same battery charge again, with normal to moderate use.
This was the same battery same settings.
Let me know if you guys found something else.
GUI experience:
CleanGB is cool and simple, however i wish they would upgrade to Android 4
CM9 has an really cool interface but i can not tolerate the battery drain issue.
CM7 is the worst of the two, not so great GUI and bad battery life.
If you still think im crazy install CleanGB and see for yourself. CM9 just needs to focus on the battery drain.
CleanGB is more focused on the phone working as it should and they did that really well. :good:

CM10 isn't horrible, I think it's a step above CM9 honestly, Mine charges over night so i don't know how much it would drain. during a day of moderate use (texting, reading XDA and what not) I'm generally about 65% or so (If not higher)

The People's ROM. It's as good as CleanGB (ran that for several months) and is based off the latest official release (FC09).
My one personal cheat is to use the CleanGB kernel with TPR, so that may be why I get fantastic battery life.
CleanGB is cool and simple, however i wish they would upgrade to Android 4

Never going to happen. CleanGB (and TPR) are both stock TouchWiz based ROMs and it's not too likely that Sprint will offer an ICS update for the Epic.

As to the topic, I have seen it posted by a massive number of users, that CM7 had much better battery life than CM9.
In fact, the number one reason I saw posted as to why people went back to CM7, after checking out CM9, was battery life.

This 100%
I' am on Cut & Paste Rom FC09 and this has given be best battery life as of today. I had clean GB earlier (sometime back) after which i tried all the other Roms (AOKP - ICS, MIUI - ICS, RandomRom 5.1) and then decided to try C&P and man this rocks !
I have got a battery life of 2 days with a talk time (voice call) of 4 hours and thats the best i have seen till now among all of the Roms on my phone
legendary.mtd + gps fix is just as good as cleanGB plus it has the 15 toggle mod
try AOKP, people says it has better bettery life than CM9, so you can keep the "cool interface" while saving battery lol. Me myself never bother with battery as long as it last more than 1 hours. Always carrying one of those portable charger, If the battery is low then charge it haha.

+1 for aokp...with the nexus modem. Typical 3 hours screen on time, over 18 hours on. Time with out signal under 4% every day. Used to be around 15% with epic modem under same conditions. Using 1800 touch battery.

Hmm perhaps I need to have didhiy do the kernel fix. There's a fix on the nexus s since people had the same problem. So far, I've only seen you and another person on the epic having that issue, which is odd. Talk to him though, since he fixed it somehow. His name is popssracer.

In my personal experiences, the newest Cut & Paste ROM has AMAZING battery life. I can get over a day easily at home all day with no charge, and maybe 15-24 hours out in the world (I'm a professional touring musician, so there's times where I have NO charging source at all).
What I noticed also has equal or better battery life to TouchWiz are MIUI ROMs. If you can manage your power usage and turn off data services when you aren't using them, I could EASILY get days out of battery on 2.1.6.

HTC One 4.2.2 Update UK

I just updated my HTC One yesterday and the battery drain is ridiculous. I took my phone off the charger at 6am today and watched some of a film listened to a bit of music and sent texts as usual and phone went dead at 2pm !
Usually it would last till 6pm with heavy usage but since the update the battery life has deteriorated.
My phone is less than a week old and overall really impressed with it till now.
Anyone else having this issue and can suggest a fix?

You may need to give it a few days and a couple of battery cycles to settle itself down again. Try installing Greenify to 'hibernate' running services in the background and BetterBatteryStats to monitor kernel wakelocks and what's using your battery in general..

For me the 4.2.2 update has improved my battery life.
Everything completely stock, get about 35-40 hours battery life (100% to ~1%) with 2 to 4 hours on screen time. Obviously depending on what you do with that screen on, will dictate just how much battery life you use. But for me, usually browsing, reading, watching YouTube. Dont really game or do anything massively intensive.
Also everything on stock normal, (locations, gps, auto sync, blinkfeed, etc).
As I said depending on what you do with your phone, your battery life with on screen time will increase/decrease. Also whether you use it as a smartphone (all sync etc on) or reduce it to a phone (2g, power saver, screen dimmed, etc) makes a huge difference.

I'm working in dark rooms so why keeping display brightness not at minimum? And on most places I only got 2G network, so why not forcing the phone to only use this?
And sync... Yeah... I don't need the weather to be updated every hour... Or news... They're appearing on my BlinkFeed anyways...
And I'm using my phone as a smartphone as well Over 6 hours screen on time is mostly Facebook, WhatsApp and browsing.

I though we moved on from doing all this crap.
Why can't android manage battery like windows does or even better htc work with Google and sort the issue.
All I know is before this update I had ok battery life now I have extremely poor life. I would suggest it's the update.

100% agree with you..now the phone charges quicker but it discharges quicker too.. yes i did hard reset, autosync etc etc.. no change of my usage patterns, i now get half the usage..
dont know why htc just didnt go straight to 4.3 as this significantly improves battery life..4.2 acrosss the board was a bad update.
Anyone tried the Snapdragon™ BatteryGuru app?
