Sdcard apps - Xperia Play General

Hi, when i turn on my phone, all my applications on the sdcard, at first, show up as a sdcard on the application draw
Thats normal but they never actually load up, they stay as 'application not found'
Ive tried rebooting, and removing sdcard ect but nothings worked
In settings>storage it shows my sdcard info so its mounted ok
I have a R800i, 2.3.4 .49 with a 32gb class 4 sandisk, fully stock
Is there anything i can do or should i send my phone back
Thanks

I get the same.

Try transferring them to internal memory, then back again. Either that or format your SD on a PC first (back your files onto the PC first) then put it back into your phone.
I've had that issue before and its annoying as hell

I've had this happen before the try powering off and let the phone sit for a few seconds. Turn it on and give it about a minute before unlocking. See if that makes a difference.

Try this, and if it fails try to format the SD from the phone

My camera is working randomly...i get random restarts too :)

Well the same day i got my nexus, after taking few pictures, my camera basicly died, started to give errors or restarts the phone, then it was unable to get on at all.
I did factory reset number of times, nothing happened. I thought it's something hardware and forgot about my camera for a while, just to find today that it works again. I took lots of pictures without any problems, shot some video too.
Later in the day when i decided to try it again, it was giving the same error again as day 1 ("The camera application is not responding" and you can force kill it, then if go to the camera again, it says that it couldnt connect to the camera).
So seems like it's something software related since its randomly working, but if factory reset isn't helping, then what it might be that can be fixed softwarely?
I'm rooted now. Still the stock rom.
p.s.
the phone also restarts when i mount the SD card and start copying lots of files and randomly restarts at other occasions too, without any obvious reasons, even when just sitting.
Other than that the phone is great
hopefully its all software that can be fixed though!
Sounds to me like there's something buggy on ya SD card. Id reformat the SD card if ya haven't already and run it empty for a bit to see if the problem persists... I think the most forgotten fix for things if they haven't figured it out is SD card, a lot of issues can come from the SD card, not saying ievery issue is the SD card, but ya be surprised how a card can wack phone out.
Sounds to me like its when your phones accessing the SD card...
yeah makes sense but
i've formatted it many times, and the camera doesnt work even without it (doesnt even start)
btw it's not the original card, but my old one from my HTC HD
the camera is supposed to work and without a SD card inserted right?

I meant keep card in it, just empty without files, formatted and see what happens
i've tried that, doesnt help
Hi,
try formatting SD card with Panasonic SD Formatting Tool,it writes back the partition table and could help. For me worked, I had an issue with gallery, surely related to SD card, and now works well.
Bye
what settings to use to format it?
what fat, cluster size?
i've formated it bunch of times with the windows vista tool, fat32 and the default cluster size (i think) but it didnt help.
And if i recall correctly it was crashing the camera and with SD card out of the phone
yeah just tried again
even with the card out, none of the camera using applications starts, including the camera, barcode scanner and 3d compass
the later 2 dont even take pictures, so they dont need the sd card at all and still they dont work
what else it might be? im getting some other applications crashes from time to time, seems that my phone isnt very stable. And it's stock...huh
I suggest sending it back for repair/replacement. Could very possibly be the result of bad blocks in ram.
You mentioned it isn't the original SD card the phone came with. Why don't you try the original card then, and see if it is the actual card, or the phone that is the problem.

i would have done that long time ago if i had it, this is the only card i have handy at the moment
but it makes the same problem with the card pulled out, so it isn't the card for sure
do u tihnk that there is any chance reflashing the rom would fix it?
any records of factory roms being buggy for just particular devices?
Okay...first off you said it's an older card, you could have bad sectors on your card, some of the older cards only have a read/write cycle of a couple thousand before fail. Second you can't run the camera app without the sd card. Third formatting the card so many times helps you count down those read/write cycles on your card. I'd be pretty confident in saying that your problems would go away after getting a new card. Hope this helped

But what do u get you when you try to start the camera app with SD card out
Does it hangs and crashes and you need to force kill it or?
yup....just tried it, i popped my card out rebooted and started camera app, and i got a force close with no option to wait
that's great man! It means that it could actually be from the stupid card!
thank you so much!

Constant Media Scanning

Hey,
My Vibrant CONSTANTLY keep rescanning the media on the SD, and its slowing the phone to a crawl. Ill watch it start, finish, and then start again 30 seconds later (or so). Anyone else have this, and if so, did you find a solution?
Thanks!
Sounds buggy...mine usually just does it if I reboot the phone
Sent from my Samsung Vibrant using XDA App
Actually my ONLY complaint about this phone not constantly but every time I reboot and it takes a good while scanning, if I try to press on any button while scanning the phone freezes, there has to be a tweak to disable this feature when vibrant roms become available..
Thats my issue too....it freezes, the screen goes off, the button backlight stays on, and I cant do anything but hard-reset it by holding the power or pulling the battery. ive deleted almost everything of the internal SD, so I have no idea why its freezing
I remove the external card and still experiencing the same thing, I just don't understand how my old HD2 with buggy winOS never did this, come on Developers Android is an awesome OS and extremely configurable, PLEASE fix this issue for us.
Mine does it on reboot and after I unplug it from my pc. It is a little annoying but it doesn't last too long.
It's scanning 16gb of memory for media changes. Why would you expect that to be faster than 20-30 seconds. Are you guys serious?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
If it's doing it constantly and not just on reboot than that is definitely a defect.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
The media scanner runs for me, at least, every time the userspace filesystem is modified, so on unplug from PC, file copy/deletes in the file manager, bluetooth unpair...etc. If you have an app that is frequently writing to /sdcard then that's probably triggering it for you.
Did you replace your SD card with one from another phone? I don't get any major scanning issues
Just exchanged the phone for a new one. Will report back.
No, I am using the stock SD card (Not ready to lose Avatar yet)

I know you can copy avatar to the internal memory and it will still work... but the link on the app won't find it, you'll have to go to files, ect. I'm pretty sure you can copy it to another SD card without any trouble. As far as the media scanner, it is pretty annoying...scanned alot when I first got the phone ..of course moving around avatar, it took a long time to rescan and it scanned several times. Now it seems to scan evertime I move or delete a file ...sometimes it scanns more than once but its usually pretty fast. It would be cool to change the settings to rescan only when you specify or something.
i have just over 7 gig of music on my sd card, scan after reboot lasts less than a min.
<edit> it is a class 6 card, so that might help with the speed etc...
I was messing around in /system and looked at one of the .conf files. There's a line in there for media with a value of "on". I'm sure if you edit it to "off" it'll stop scanning but who know what the negative effects would be.
Ya, I never had this media scanning on my G1, on any build. Wonder if it has something to do with the Internal SD and some sort of database it maintains of it. No idea why it wouldn't be simple flash memory though, exactly like an SD card
It's because of the Music player and such.
I'd still say try a reset. I just did and things (besides the GPS which is not going to be fixed by this) like the market and such aren't giving me such long loading screens. I was installing 3-5 apps at a time. Even the Friends feed widget doesn't have the looooooong loading screen anymore.

I have this same problem. Typically it will kick into the media scanning mode when opening Google Maps. The phone becomes unusable for several minutes. The screen will shut off and then comes back on close to a minute after hitting the power button. Sometimes it will display "Safe Mode" in the lower left corner.
yeah, I have an 8 gig card which is basically full and the media scanning I only notice on boot ups. And this takes very little time (20 seconds maybe).
I'm curious if you have a corrupt file or app that is causing the issue man?
Have you moved avatar to your computer, stuck the SD card in your PC and formatted it? I wonder if you put it back in your phone and rebooted if you would still have this issue?
Worse case you just move the folder with avatar back to the card, nothing lost.
Do you mind trying a format?
Someone should try the "Autostarts" app. I would try it, but it requires a rooted phone, and mines not rooted yet. This app may be able to prevent the media scanning...
http://www.androidcentral.com/android-quick-app-autostarts
Thanks for the tips. I have wiped, exchanged phones, wiping the internal and external SD, and attempted to prevent the scan using autostarts (although I didnt find anything specific), all w/o luck. Ive removed ALL my music from my internal SD, only pictures are left.
It seems to scan every few minutes or so, and it almost always causes a restart of the Touchwiz process (w/ a reload of all the widgets) and lags the phone a lot (so much that it doesnt respond to button touches for a minute or so)
Im about ready to dig in and disable this scan unless we can find a legitimate fix or purpose for it.

When I'm in storage mode.......

.....connected to my laptop all the apps I have located on my ext SD card disappear which I understand but when my Atrix is unplugged the apps I have stored don't reappear on my home screens.
They have to be manually put back on.
Does anyone know why this is.....it's doing my head in.
I'm running the Alien 4 rom with Faux123 kernel if that matters.
Cheers

I don't understand why people move apps to sd on a phone that doesn't need it.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777
For the same reason you cant access anything else on the SD card when in storage mode, the OS has to unmount it while the computer has access, thus you cant use anything on it including apps, this is normal.
To the first reply, cause I want to and to the second, read my question again. I said I know why they disappear when connected but don't know why they don't return when the device is unplugged.
Never had the problem on either of my 2 desires and wondered if it was Atrix or maybe ROM specific.
Don't post unless you can help. Thanks.
Ah i missed that part :-(..... In that case no idea never tried it as I have 1.2GB free of app storage.
Do they appear in the apps list?
Tried restarting the phone?
Tried a media scan (not sure if it will pick up apps)
Sounds like your ROM is not scanning the sdcard after remounting it.

No probs Nap and thanks Dennis, tried it mate but no joy.
Looks like I'll just use internal storage for ease from now as it gets boring adding them all back after a while.
Thanks anyway tho
you could always buy the dual mount SD program, best .99c I have spent so far. It allows you to mount and still access the sd on the phone. it is very helpful for me.
I had an issue with my ringtones that are located on storage being jacked up during mounts. the issue would occur when I had a notification, call, text, anything that made a noise that used a custom tone while mounted to a PC. After unmount the notification would either revert to default or choose a completely random tone.
I downloaded dualmount a few months back and that issue was resolved. I havent had to reset my notifications except when I flashed to CM, and I can live with that

welcome to the club, i am in the same boat.
my phone works fine all times without sd card but sometimes goes crazy (restaring / freezing constantly for 7-8h non stop!) with sd card in situ.
some of my apps are on internal 1.9gb memory, some on internal 11gb memory, some on external card. trying to figure out how to force on stock unrooted device to force all apps to internal memory (1.9gb or 11gb) to prevent these issues. or will try new card. my old card works fine on my htc desire. dont know if the htc folders present on sd card are causing soem issues
have tried with apps2sd pro and stock app mnager to move apps to internal 11gb memory. but the phone has a mind of its own and some stay on 1.9gb internal memory some go to 11gb internal memory and some go to external sd card and i cant seem to force moveable apps to internal 11gb memory only instead of sd card as mentioned in the other concurrent thread today on this topic.
Hi,
I also had similar problem like this. It appears that the Android Program at times cannot seem to access the Ext SD card program/s installed and that will cause a reboot and repeated so.
I really do not why this is happening? It will seem to work fine ant reboot when the Ext SD is removed - but those programs installed in the Ext. SD will no longer be accessible.
There is a hidden folder in the Ext. SD ".android_secure" which contain all the programs transferred to that Ext. SD. If you empty this folder of it programs by transferring them to your PC and reinsert the Ext. SD card, it will function normally and you can access your file like photos, videos, music, and ebooks. But you will not be able to access your programs in the Ext. SD.
I had tried un-installing the apps in the Ext SD and re-installing them into Phone memory it will work but it will not transfer to Int. SD (the 11 GB) and keep informing me there is no Ext SD. This of course will eat up all the 1.9 GB of the Phone memory, which is not what I had wanted. Although I still have a lot of memory in the Int. SD (about 8 GB) it will not transfer there, why I am not sure.
Can some of the Android expert please look into this problem and advise. Thank you.

Hi,
How do you make sure all the Apps are located in the Internal SD?
I have an Ext SD and some apps are transferred there. I cannot transfer these apps into the Int SD.
I uninstalled the apps and reinstall them without the Ext SD and then try to transfer to Int SD. It will not transfer and a message "you do not have an Ext SD card"
Will appreciate any assistance. Thank you.
I don't have any apps installed on the internal SD nor external SD, I notice this that everytime an app failed to complete (eg loading) it goes to looping reboots. The last one I was playing some game something called mission, cannot remember the game name, it was loading all the time then I decided to switch it off and turn it on again. It goes constant reboot. I need a good phone which doesn't rebooot all the time ...

Well sent the phone back to Samsung, I think this is what happen to me, excited what the result would be from Samsung ..

I think I found a solution to the stupid Android System battery drain...

This is REALLLYYY a PITA but as of right now I'm pretty sure it actually worked. So if your Android System is taking up 25%+ and higher than your screen for taking up battery (in Settings--->Battery stats), then try this. As of right now my screen is #1 and Android System is only at 15%!
**Try this while your charging your phone to 100% to see if it actually worked!!**
1. Download and install Kies3.
2. Copy all contents of your ext SD Card to your computer.
3. Go into Settings-->Scroll down to System and click on Storage.
4. Format your ext SD Card by pressing "Format SD Card".
5. Go into Kies3 and and copy all of your contents back onto your SD Card.
6. Once that process is finished, download SD Scanner.
7. Go into the SD Scanner app and scan the internal storage (default one) and ext SD Card (/storage/extSdCard <-- must be typed exactly like that).
8. Reboot your phone once your phone has hit 100%.
9. See if it worked for you, hope this helps, and if it doesn't then I'm sorry but it worked well for me!

But what does it actually do? Put media scanner to sleep (something that was a HUGE problem on the s3 - media scanner always running)?

It scans ALLL of your media for you (hence why I said to scan internal, then your ext Sd Card). Thus eliminating the need for Android to scan your media.
Pretty sure media scan would still run tho...no? Especially if ure taking pics, adding music, etc etc.

I'm in the process of moving around 50gb of files from the card to my PC and then will go back tomorrow and do this. It is actually high time that I re-organize all of the thousands of images on my card anyway. I think I'll store them by quarter to keep to only a few thousand per folder. Thanks!
This doesnt work. After you start an app or scan folders, for music player for example, Android OS and Android System are right back at the top
