How to root and install ICS on MyTouch 4G (v2.3.5) - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
First of all my name is AL and I am new to the forum. I am an IT tech but I have to admit I'm COMPLETELY LOST when it comes to 'messing around' with cell phones. I have an HTC Glacier (MyTouch 4G) on version 2.3.5 and I want to root it and install ICS (4.0.3 I believe is the latest) on it. I have looked around all over the web but haven't found detailed instructions on how to do this and the few I have found require for my phone to be on version 2.2.1 only. I am more than willing to 'donate' for someone to provide me with detailed step-by-step instructions on how to achieve my goal of running ICS on my MyTouch 4G. I will appreciate all the help and input you guys can give me!
Thanks in advance!!!
AL

You might want to check out the mytouch 4g forum instead of asking in the hardware hacking forum. Posting in the wrong place just clutters up the forum and next time you might not get a response. Also check out the rules on xda.

If this is your first time flashing a rom, learning how to root, etc. I would suggest going to youtube and watch some videos on how to do different things like that.
But to get you started
Rooting/S-Off:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858996
And look for a rom that you might want:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=796
Be careful, this can break your phone and void your warranty. Read everything first and if you don't feel comfortable doing it, then don't do it. It is no body's fault but yours if something goes wrong.
Enjoy

I too will help you, but I suggest u do it in steps. Step 1 you need to downgrade to Froyo 2.2.1 and here is a link to the guide. Read it a couple times until you understand it
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1178912
After you downgrade, you will need to root and get s-off, and here is a link to the guide.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858996
And after that you will need to flash a custom recovery, and install engineering bootloader. Then you can flash away..but be warned, you can brick your phone if you aren't careful. So make sure you read and understand what u r doing...

[Q] I am new to this site

I could really use some ones help me root my phone and get 2.2 froyo I would really appreciate if some one can help me please. Can help one reply and show me how
Do you want root + custom rom, or just stock froyo.
I will tell you that stock froyo leaves a LOT to be desired and the custom ROMs are incredibly better.
Help me out whats best for me to do so I wont be able to crash my phone lol thank you for replying
Honestly, you are better off rooting on your stock 2.1, read the noob guide.... will add more shortly.
After you read that, you will note all you need to do is move update.zip and flash it (in the guide).
Boom, you have root... now download Rom Manager, flash CWR, and create a backup (also in the guide).
Now that you have a backup of your system, backup your apps (Titanium Backup app), in the guide.
Now, download a custom ROM and flash it with CWR..... I recommend Trigger V2.5. You can go to the dev section and find it, or click the link in my signature to watch a video if you like. If on your phone best to watch the video embedded in his thread so the annotations show up.
there is no quick way of doing this
u need to do some reading
in s15274n click on the "My noob guide" read it, then read the "My Vibrant Guide",
then if u have questions about really specific things, people will help you out.
read lots before u start flashing roms, because it is risky.
hope this helps, i am new to the android world too and been reading lots lately, my phone should be here soon though
Ok I will root right now and reply when I am done but where is the noob guid?
my signature, or the sticky in the Q&A section.
Ok checking. I have been reading lots also bc I don't wanna mess up my from that's why I am asking for help you know lol
s15274n noob guide has all you need, rooting is pretty simple and there are A LOT of videos showing step by step for rooting, flashing a rom, updating a theme etc.... so welcome, after a couple of weeks you will be so happy with the phone it will blow your mind
Thank you I'll be back guys i need to help my brother with some stuff. Right now the first I'm doing is rooting so i have the undate.zip in the internal right gonnd turn off my phone and do it
I read those guides posted by s15274n and others countless times before i rooted, then I read them again. Read them until there is no question in your mind as to what your doing. Read the rom flashing guides as well, as you'll more than likley want to put a custom on on after you've gained root. Thanks to s15274n and the other members who have taken the time to make easy to follow guides and tutorials.
Ok I root it now download a Rom right. But what is Trigger V2.5.
I'm looking for the Trigger V2.5 but i dont find it I see Trigger V2.0.1
look in the development section of the vibrant forums..anyway..trigger 2.6 got released today..here is the link for the thread:

(click where it says "download trigger 2.6")

[Q] Noob seeking Root advice

hi,
I want to root my Desire Z as I would like to use Titanium Back Up Pro. I have checked thru the threads here. And, well, I am totally confused.
On TheRomMistress's great sticky there are 27 guides with at least 11 dealing with rooting the phone. Some of these guides refer you to other guides and these refer you to yet more guides for various reasons (updates etc).
I know a lot of the guides were initially worked out before the whole NAND lock was cleared up.
So my question is which guide should a noob follow to get root?
I love the whole android experience, love Sense and think my phone is all shiny, sparkly etc. I may want at a later stage to try out some of the other ROMs but so far I really love stock (heck, my previous phone was a windows 2003 Magician with BigStorage courtesy of XDA!!). I just want to be able to back it up.
Thanks for your help guys.
personally i used this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=843014
worked well once i had reset my phone and made sure my sd card was clean. Read up on adb before you attempt though so you know what is happening at each stage, it makes the whole process easier. And if things don't work as expected you'll be able to sort it.
The method listed in the official Wiki is the one recommended by most people nowadays: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision#OTA_Updates.
It is generally considered the "safe" way to attempt root at this point. There were reports of semi-bricks caused by the permroot function in Visionary so general consensus is not to use it. For other guides (such as the one linked to earlier), if you have a typo while flashing the engineering HBOOT, you could cause a semi-brick as well (though if you follow the instructions carefully, it shouldn't be a problem).
A typo with the Wiki method shouldn't lead to a semi-brick though. It also has the added benefits of not only giving you root, but also true radio S-OFF, SuperCID, and subsidy unlock (if your phone was originally locked to a specific carrier).
That being said, as long as you read carefully and follow instructions, you should be fine following most any of the guides.
thanks guys for the answers and sorry for my delay in replying. The wife came home with a new netbook that she "needs". I do get the joy of setting up something I'll never get to use. Yay!! hmmmm
I'll read thru all this and hope to try this out over the weekend.
Again thanks guys.
Just use gfree method, its painless

[Q] How to flash a rom zip

This is a really dumb noob question, but there's so much tech stuff around here I'm floundering a bit ...
I have an unbranded Legend running 2.06.708.2 (Asian I think)
I want to have a rooted phone running Froyo 2.2
I found the file "Legend_Froyo_S_HTC_WWE_3.15.405.3, rooted.zip"
I now need a simple set of instructions how to use this to for perform the upgrade.
Easy.

Thanks for your reply. I think I have visited that page, among many others.
I was kinda hoping for a pointer to a single simple topic entitled something like "[HOWTO] Flash a Legend rom from a zip" but am coming to the conclusion there is no such thing.
Guess life is not that straightforward in Legend Land, so I must keep trawling the many threads and try to piece together what goes on.
Dave
If u haven't rooted legend u can install this zip file... first root your phone. Good luck

I was also confused on my first strike to root my legend.
I fund another very good rooting thread here. Try http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=894465 and follow it step by step.
It wasn't very complicated, but you need to read and follow this thread carefully.

[Q] Installing a custom ROM

Hey MyTouch 4g users, I'm quite new to this and I've read the tutorial threads about rooting and etc. But I'm still confused. I'm trying to flash a custom ROM for MyTouch 4g T Mobile version. Do I need to have ADB Fastboot installed before I can root my device? I plan on following the True PermaRoot method. I dont want to miss anything. If anybody can simply point out what I need to do in a simple order that'll be very helpful. Thank you in advance.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858996
EVERYTHING is here. You just have to read. And if it's not clear enough - perhaps you should reconsider rooting until it is.
Welcome to the forum. Don't mind some of the cranky people, they haven't gotten laid in months. Yes you should have ADB set up, there is a great guide for it in the development section. It will make your life much easier. Once that is complete just follow the instructions to the "T" for the rooting method and you will be good to go. It is actually very simple.

You just made my day low hahahaha
As for rooting (not just gunna make a useless post) if your going to use the gfree method honestly you do not need anything besides your phone visionary a terminal emulator and some bandwidth to work with. In my mind that is by FAR the easiest.

Rooting mytouch 4g

I am wanting to root my android, and after reading my first post on it, I figured I could do it.. But after reading several posts later, I have to admit it seems a lil more scary than I first thought... The word bricked, has haunted me the last few nights.. there are so many post on the subject that im not sure whos advice to take or try.... It would be nice to meet a couple people that would help me through emails or posts to better understand what im doing.... I have 2.3.4 gingerbread as of now.

Downgrade to froyo, don't ever unlock your bootloader on the glacier. Either root with the root.sh method (very simple, noob proof) or gfree (bit more complicated, but still good to use). Install recovery, go flash.
Also if you want more help on the glacier, post on their where everyone is.
