I use Franco Kernel for a month now and battery last to the end of the day with not too much use

I see your using GO Launcher.
I've had my note a little over a week, when I first got it I went a bit nuts and grabbed every app left right and centre. Including GO Launcher, I ended up in a similar position as you though - my battery would drain completely in around 6-8hours (of heavy usage mind you).
Last night I uninstalled all the GO features and I'm now back on the stock TWLauncher, after nearly 12hours, I still have around 60% battery with similar usage.
Many things affect how quickly the battery drains - most notably, how much you use it. But also if your in an area with weak/no signal it can potentially drain your battery as the phone constantly seeks a signal. (Had this issue with the Galaxy Ace).

Try all the different kernels , they can make a huge difference and each phone is different
From the big ole Note

something strange happens today. and it has been almost a half day since i've flashed franco kernel .
and the temp went up to 102? is that normal i felt the heat up to my ear while i were on a call, it didnt happen b4. i used the WiFi for like 10 min?
. hope someone tells me whats wrong

You should'nt have to flash kernels and whatnot, my note performs best when left stock...Just be carfull.with some badly programmed apps.

There are two things I found that helped temperature...
1) Turn off the Note and charge it for an hour or so to get to full charge
Use it for a while and if it is still hot....
2) Reboot into Recovery mode (I use CWM) and then clear the Davlik cache
I did have temp problems and screen sleeps with Franco 10, so have gone back to Franco 6 - it was very good on my phone. As you will read, every phone seems to be unique - some kernels are great on one phone and not so good on others.... Just make sure to take a good backup and test it before trying anything new.
Another tip for improved performance...
Disable wi-fi when you don't need it and wi-fi sharing (I use Titanium Backup but there are others out there) - I found this made a big difference - maybe 5-10%.
Good luck.

There are a number of ways of doing it... personally i use two...
1) ClockWorkMod backup
2) Titanium backup
The first one is a great way to get a total backup of everything if you need to get back to previous setup, the second is the same but also great for backing up individual apps and better... freeezing them so they dont run!

try using the kernel abyssnote 4.2, I was using the Franco thought it was going like the battery in stock, with an abyss felt great savings

hi,(i tried PM reply 2 u,but not sure its goin.so this post)
i saw ur screenshots.
as u r on a custom rom,i cant compare my Note 2 urs.
I am on foll stock rom (screenshot attached)
u can try going back to stock rom(download from dr ketans thread)
run the note as stock for 48 hrs n see how battery lasts.
if there is huge battery drain then also, show it to samsung.
if not, install apps one by one, keeping few hours in between.u can easily detect battery drain of some app like that.
personally i use go-launcher n find it to be very less battery consuming.
yesterday i've installed an antivirus and is watching out for battery drain now.
hope this helps...

Awful Awful battery life since Darky's ROM

I have always had stock ROMS with my i9000, ending with JS7. I read the battery problems people had and I always counted myself very lucky that my phone had a pretty decent battery life.
Daily I would SMS (a lot), the odd phone call, quick blip on the internet (3g), lots of angry birds and doodle jump! I would get at least a couple of days before it went into the red.
Then I made the big mistake of installing Darky's ROM, it looks nice and feels a bit snappier, but now the battery is in the red in the evening after a full nights charge. This is even after severely curbing my phone use to try and extend the life. I have tried all the wiping tips and tricks too.
Same apps, different ROM. Darky's is an absolute nightmare for me and I will be going back to stock.
So is the ROM just another variable in the mix of battery issues, or the main offender?
Hello. I've the same battery drain, and I think it's very annoying when at evening you need to charge it again without using strongly the phone. Otherwise the Darky's rom, (I'm on 9.3) is very nice and marvellous, but this battery drain issue makes it worse.

Have you tried using spare parts to see which app is sucking baster or cpu? Did you download the rom configure tool from the market? Which gallery did you instal worth the rom?

This and:
have you let the phone drop below 10-5%?
Flashing screws up the battery indicator (how much depends) and it calibrates itself while in use. Letting the battery fall, or even the phone shut down by itself can speed up the process quite a bit. This helps only if there is no battery hungry app that's eating all your powrz though.
I haven't tried to see if there is an app sucking the life out of it because I never had any issues under the 3 or 4 stock roms and I haven't d/l any other apps. The battery deterioration started instantly I flashed with Darky's. I don't know which gallery it is, it came with the d/l. What ever it is, it doesn't work! No, didn't use the configuration tool.
I must admit I haven't let it run under 10% as I want my phone with me working. But wouldn't this manifest itself when I updated the stock firmwares?

ok mate, firstly search the market for the Darky Rom Configurator, shoudl be easy to find, you shoudl be able to reflash without wiping all your apps, run the config app first and pay special attn to the 'Lockscreen wallpaper' of the tool, there aint many options to choose. Got the gallery drain bit mixed up, sorry tired
If i was on my own PC id give a bit more detail but its pretty straight forward.
Im running 9.3 and get a full days mid-heavy use, i normally go to bed at 10-15% which is fine with me
cheers for the advice mate, I've just grabbed the app so I will do the flash in the morning.
I will report back my findings!
Just a thought but Darky's Rom uses JS5 and wondering if has something to do with the modem? Just a theory but wondering if you could replace back to JS7 and see if that helps. Just a thought. I'm used to a day's worth of battery myself these days.
The faster you make the phone go the more power you use darkest Rom are ok but messed with too much
I got really bad battery life for the first few weeks using darky. But now the battery life seems to be longer and more stable and average. I did do calibrations a few times tho.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
You won't get better battery with Darky ever.
I played around quite a lot, 9.2, 9.3, calibration, fresh system, darky rom configurator, different kernels, lagfixes, no matter what, my battery drain was mad. It's a quick and smooth rom, but that's the downside of it.
I switched back to Doc's rom via kithen with same kernel, and quess what? No calibration, no playing around, nothing special I did and battery life is brilliant! Of course it lags here and there, that's Doc's drawback(no lagfix applied tho)
You will often find that if you flash a number of roms you get battery drain . Apart from the actual rom itself you need to flash to a clean firmware reset battery stats use a suitable modem charge battery once using bump charge method then wait a few weeks for it to settle down .
I am using rom kitchin since Darkys killed my battery life months ago .
JPY and JPY modem no complaints about excess battery life .
But i did flash back to clean stock before custom rom and wipe everything .

but this is true even if i use a kernel mod.. instead of a full flash? i think that a stock rom with custom kernel made for battery lasting is better... or not?
Have u all tried Battery Bump Charging?
Hi, I am not a Galaxy S owner but I am doing a research on this issue for a friend.
I am a Milestone user and I am a ROM slut (I flash many ROMs back and forth)
So I am very familiar with cases where after flashing a new ROM, your 100% fully charged phone is actually 60%/
Here is a posting on a few ways you can do a battery bump charge. When you perform this battery bump charging technique, u will be surprised to see that your 100% fully charged battery is actually not 100%

SE Stock Rom Advantage!

Hello All,
I noticed there are a lot of posts regarding Battery Usage & Optimization...
I tried many many combinations of custom roms, basebands and kernels and I always face the same battery problem especially when 3G/MobileData is switched on.
I admit that Sony Ericsson gave us a ****ty stock rom with poor kernel however It's still the best rom in managing battery usage.
I made a small comparison on Stock rom VS Custom roms with 3G/MobileData left switched-on and I found the following:
Custom rom(s): battery drain down very fast it goes for 100% to 1% in less than 8 hours (normal apps installed)
Stock rom: battery lasts for 2-3 days with normal daily phone usage (same apps installed as i did in custom rom)
Please share your opinions.
Thanks,
Ayman
I don't agree at all...
Custom roms can have just as good, if not better, battery life.
I personally think this was a good idea. Nice post and info. Just curious, how long did you do this study with the data you got?

hey guys, i too have this issue, i dnt know if its device specific. ive had the phone since march(2010) last year and have been modifying it with the great mods that the devs hav given us. everytime i install a custom rom i just get unusual battery drain, like yesterday, i followed instructions to the letter and installed tripnravers miuifroyo 1.0.8 and i lost 10% battery in like 20 minutes n ive hardly used it :-(. so nowadays i stick wiv a modified stock 2.1(ewjet to b exact). im gna buy a new battery and see if i get the same results. i really wna use a custom(2.2+)rom but the battery problems are really putting me off, theres so many people out der that arent really having ny battery drain whcih jus dus my head

Thanks Voelker BTW this is my first Thread in XDA, I used to use SE 2.1 stock rom till the first stable Froyo custom rom came out. I switched to Froyo then I started to notice this around 4 months ago and I tried many combination and a lot of optimizations to find out the best one although Stock rom was always better.
@fiscidtox:
I love Foryo and GB much much more than Eclair I currently on CM6 v6 Wolfbreak
Could you please tell me how the battery lasts on your custom rom while MobileData is left switched-on?
Thanks,
Ayman
I get a full day..
If you mean stock with no tweaks then maybe it would last longer, but a lot of that would be not having jit enabled...

You must be doing something wrong!
10% in 20 mins isn't normal.
I'm sure if you left it settle this would rectify itself though.
I think the biggest advantage of the stock kernel so far is stability, but the ongoing development for the custom kernel is sucessful to implement some problems such as battery drain caused by unability to go into deep sleep etc..
I never understood needing more than 24 hours on a charge. Charge it while you're sleeping you wont be using it then anyway.
Even if you like the 2.1 Stock ROM for any reason (Stability,Battery, etc) and don't like all these awesome 2.2 and 2.3, you should at least use Eric's JET ROM which is based on the original ROM has no stability issues and has faaaaar better battery life.
But seriously, I`m using Custom ROMs since the first 2.2 ROM by Z and never even cared to get back to the stock ROM.
When I use Wifi custom roms have almost the same battery life as the stock rom. But since I can't connect to wifi at work on any custom rom, im forced to use 3g.. and I need to charge my phone twice a day with almost no usage.

Let it settle for at least two days to see improvement.
Your battery needs to adjust, much like letting your phone build a cache, in order to really see how the rom will effect anything.
Im using the stock rom and my battery lasts a maximum of 2 days with this tweaks: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=934486
I dont use 3g at all and i use wifi sometimes (session lasts only 10 mins or so)

Juice defender only enables my wifi when i am at home...all other times i have data on with facebook sync.

Please Help - Problems Again

Guys its me again.
Flashed Pre-Rooted DDJP6 and G3MOD 1.8 extreme kernel.
Charged for 2 hours, After that taken my phone out of charging suddenly battery started draining to 10% and phone switched off. i waited for a while and restarted phone battery was 80% and suddenly 10% again and phone switched off.
In the past i had been changing rom since last 4-5 days from Kyrillos to Indroid to XXPJF to DDJP6.
Kindly tell me what is the issue?? Many suggest to calibrate, when we calibrate we have to drain it in reality and recharge it to 100% but my phone if showing fake battery it drains instantly so how do we really drain it and re-charge??
I want to solve this problem asap. As my phone is almost unusable, i suspected SETCPU is causing this so i uninstalled it but still no use.
Please help i don't want to re-flash the rom and lose the data again
There is a high possibility that your battery is damaged since, as I understood, this problem persists in more than one roms.
sent from my CM7 nokia 3210
Switched it off for a 20-25 Minutes.
Switched on since last 2hours 3minutes and Mobile WIFI ROUTER AP in use since then.
still 22% Left. Dont understand , sometimes works very well and sometimes what a lag. I would let it drain and then charge fully.. Hope it works

first change the kernel to G3MOD v1.9 lite. be rooted. using root explorer delete batterystats.bin or install BatteryCallibration.apk charge upto 100% then let it drain. use battery monitor widget to check health and voltage of the battery. report it here. if health is good and voltage is >4150mV, u are good.
Actually its such an pain to again n again change the kernel i can't doo al data2sd and stuf again
btw i had cleared battery stats from the recovery so i don't have a stats.bin file when i tried batterycallibration it said the files is missing.
Sometimes battery works nicely and sometimes it lags usually at night what solution we have for this?
Battery was running fine at 100% on some tough work for an hour or so. Its rocking
So lets experiment , see the log below ->
SETCPU set to on demand max 1Ghz.
11:33 = Battery 100% , SETCPU setting on boot, wifi on , fb chat on , opera on.
11:41 - Battery at 74% FB CHAT off now installed operamini.. let me browse SETCPU still on
11:52 - Battery at 61% , Opera On , Setcpu modified to SAVE POWER.
11:54 - Battery still at 61% but phone is lagging more then it was before SETCPU. So i have uninstalled setcpu and kept my phone for charging. Lets see how much time it takes to fully charge..
I have reached the conclusion that SETCPU is the cause of problem
Even after SETCPU problem persists... drained it once and charged for about 1 hour , was showing BATTERY FULL... took it off charger switched on, was 100% kept in pocket in idle condition. 10-15 minutes passed by took it out and was down to 80 then to 50 in next 15-20 minutes without any work... What's gng on some1 help

Best kernel........????
Well there are 2 kernel which are just awesome ......G3mod 2.0 b3......and Fugumod kernel......
U can flash any one of them.....
I personally prefer Fugumod....but it's your choice coz both are fantastic....
Flash the new kernel and clear the battery stats....calliberate....and Setcpu doesn't harm your battery....
Even i am thinking about FUGUMOD.. does it include Recovery , app2sd ,data2sd and stuff.
If yes can you tell me which version exactly of FuGuMOD is the best for non lag stable superb experience ??
M using DDJP6 pre-rooted with superuser and i don't want to format and wipe stuff again.. lots of apps are dere and internal memory is still 800mb empty so will it b impacted if i flash a kernel?

If the batttery gets swollen, it means it is near the end of its lifetime. If it is swollen so much that you cant put your back cover on, it is time to change your battery. i would recommend you not to use your phone with that battery and get a new one ASAP.
Just to clear things out, fugumod doesn't include CWM recovery nor does it include app2sd script. You have to do this manually unless you are using a custom ROM which has this preloaded such as kyrillos' ROM.

It is weird that it happened on this phone. I CAUTION you STRONGLY not to use that battery as it may damage your phone, leave aside blasting and all.
I would also recommend you to take more care of the phone as in, not left in charge for way too long, not overclocked constantly at very very high speeds continuously, and also to check where you keep you phone while charging (dont keep it on heat emitting stuffs like stabilizers, fan regulators etc) Change your battery of course.
Looks like the problem is You. It is neither the battery nor SetCPU. You skipped some basic stuffs, ignored the governor scaling of setCPU and now just pay some attention and if you do, you got yourself a solution!

Nope its the battery only I checked it a mobile expert and saw the battery a bit swollen so its definitely a battery issue. I set the right profiles and governor while using setcpu. Maybe overcharging must have damaged my battery.

Oh hey bbrad! I'm so glad u responded because I do infact have so many questions for you lol. I'm currently running your aokp unofficial 4.2.2 march 29 rom with the devil kernel and I love it! I just have bad battery drain issues even when I try to underclock, the battery drains badly. I tried to download the devil kernel manager to help sort out the issues but I can't get anything to stick after a reboot. I've tried searching for a solution but no luck. I have ran many of your roms they are my favorite to this day but I dont think I remember having bad battery drain on your other ones. Is there something i can do?
I even have a 3500mah extended battery and it doesnt make it through a day of work :/

oh thanks for telling me about the undervolting. I did not know I'll go back stock. its a brand new battery but it was one of those cheap ones from ebay.. I have 2 extended batteries and my original. i havent tried the rom on my original battery yet. I'm pretty sure I did a clean install.. you do that by wiping dalvik and partition cache right? I always wipe before I install anything but ill go back through everything when i get off work. I'm at learning about all that and now that im actually pasta on the forum i can learn a lot better lol
Ive heard that undervolting doesnt really help with battery life and any benefits would be only a few percent or minutes.
Most generics I bought on ebay died after a couple months. I would look on amazon for a 1800mah epic touch battery. You can find them on ebay but its a gamble if its real. I bought 2 1800s for about $28.
Fresh install would also include wiping data or a factory reset along with cache and davlik cache. Or you can clean install with odin and odin a custom recovery then re flash as before.

The best cheap extended battery is trexcell or however it's spelled. With heavy use (music, YouTube, downloads, instagram, twitter etc. ) I get about 8 hours. Light use over a day.

oh ok then undervolting is definitely out of the question for me then.. the ones I bought was about 10 bucks for the battery, back to phone, and the wall charger peice. they seem to work good but like u as they will probably go out soonish. about the clean install, I used heimdall to install a fresh fe29, then put my cwm fixed on there, did my wipes, installed an ics rom (dont remember which one atm) did more wipes and flashed aokp. did i forget anything?

Ya when they get that cheap there bound to be fakes or just poor quality. After going threw about 4 generics in about 6 months I just opted for a OEM 1800mah and am very happy with them. Well looks like you did plenty of wipping lol. You should be good to go.
Also if there is still battery drain try betterbatterystats and cpu spy to make sure nothing is using alot of back ground data and the phone is deep sleeping good.

Lol ok so did plenty of wiping. I have betterbatterystats and still get used to it.. I was trying to find out what exactly was draining it. As for the other app ill check it out thanks. How long is that 1800mah batterys run time for moderate use?

Some of the stats on betterbatterystats are hard to understand but googleing most stats will help you find out what it is. Cpu spy just monitors how your cpu is being used and can help with deep sleep issues.
I get great battery life on a 1800 oem. I normally get threw a full day on it with over 4 or 5 hours of screen on time. I would also give greenify and ds battery saver a try, I have had great results with using those 2 together.

I don't want to hijack, but I also want to offer my sincere thanks to this group.
I bought 3 Fassys back in the day one for myself, my son and my daughter. Mine and my daughter's are happily running AOKP JB and loving these "old" phones. My son had a mishap with his and needed to replace it. As he didn't ask for my opinion and we're clinging to our unlimited data, he bought an LG Revolution to taste some 4G goodness, then brought the phone to his old ma for roots and roms.
I don't really know *anything*, I just know how to read XDA, but he thinks I'm the phone guru.
Anyway, I figured that a new 4G snapdragon phone must have some JellyBean ROMs available, so I wandered over to the Revolution forum.
*crickets*
I figured out how to root it, but had to hand it back to my son and tell him that his fancy new phone was stuck with Gingerbread as there's just no JB ROM for it yet. The Revolution development is as dead as a red wedding guest.
It just made me appreciate what an AMAZING community of developers we have here for the Fassy!! I could easily choose from a dozen good JB ROMs and I have every reason to believe that this old phone will be eating up some Key Lime Pie before she gives up the ghost and heads to that great back corner of a dresser drawer in the sky.
THANK YOU!! To everyone who keeps this community thriving.
THANK YOU!! To everyone who recognizes that we have a fine device here and isn't jumping at the chance to make it obsolete.
It's because of you that I can continue to be too cheap to buy a new phone and still keep my unlimited data and not feel like I'm missing out on the cool new flavors of Android.
This old mama really appreciates you all!!

[Q] How to flash the Franco Kernel?

Hello,
I have done nothing to my Nexus 4 so far but I recently noticed that the battery isn't that good. I heard that the Franco Kernel might give more battery life. I don't play any games I just use it for texting, surfing and listening to music. Is the Franco Kernel good for my usage then or would you suggest another kernel?
I found the thread where I can download the Kernel but what is OP, Milestone and Nightlies? How do I flash this Kernel? Do I have to root? I couldn't find any HOW TOs.
Hope you guys can help!
Thanks!

Yes you will need to unlock your bootloader, install a custom recovery, and root. Then you download the franco kernel zip and flash it through recovery.
OP = original post
Nightly = means the latest build (they are compiled every night, and may have bugs)
Milestone = usually means a complete version (stable releases)
Milestone = stable version
Nightly = newer version may contain bugs
U first need to root your device and download the Franco kernel zip and place it in your extSdCard. Once rooted goto recovery (volume up + home + power) select install zip from external card. Browse to file select then install... And enjoy...
Make sure u know wot you doing. Read first n read alot before any action else you may brick your device.
:*: Neebi :*:
also you can buy the app and it install the flash by itself,
i guess you still need to root
since you don´t game it`s weird to have bad battery, try greenify

okay I see thanks!
Well I don't play games but I often use 3G Service and that usually drains A LOT of battery. I just want some more screen time when using 3g or WiFi. Does the Franco kernel change that?

Kernels don't do that.

Your apps will make the biggest difference. Stop apps causing wake locks such as Facebook and anything with auto refreshing/push alerts.
The biggest benefit for me of using Franco is adjusting color profiles. Once you try other settings, you'll never go back to stock colors.

Kernels don't change this I'm afraid, and 3G will always use pretty much battery. Wifi on the other hand uses nearly nothing.
If you say you're not a heavy user then Franco's Kernel will be a good one for ya. As it contains hotplugging (meaning it will make the device slower if it's not used but fast when you want it to be)
Slower = more battery conservation.
Also let's you underclock your device. As for example you don't play games so you don't want it at 1512Mhz, you can run it at 1ghz and the time your screen is off lock it to 384Mhz (or a bit higher) which again makes your battery last longer.
It comes to a small downside, that kernel comes with its own app which costs a bit of money. But it's very much worth it as you can tweak it just as you want.
---
"unfortunatly" you need root before you can flash this. But there have been very useful links in previous posts, try those!
Then if you've done all that, look into Greenify. You'll notice a difference when using it, trust me
enjoy
Hi easygoingx! i wouldnt recommend you flash franco for now. I have been using franco for 2 months , i purchased the app and everything but lately it's comsuming a lot of battery! it drained my battery a lot with last updates i was getting crazy!
if i were you i'll flash trinity!
i've turned on my phone 30 min ago and my battery is in 98%, with franco it would be by 92%
but if you wanna flash ,first root your phone and put a custom recovery (cwm or trwp) and download the zip to your nexus 4 and flash it from custom recovery.

That's definatly not the cause of Franco, but most propably some other apps rogueing. Try Greenify.
---
It's maybe the case with nightlies on particular devices.
I'm not the one to judge on that but on Milestones (Milestone 2 aka latest) there is nearly no battery consumption in idle and I've used Franco since r102 (newest is r136)
In the including pic I had flashed Milestone 2 from Franco, then afterwards changed some values in the app to my liking (aka max freq 1350, min freq 384 etc...) and then left it be for a couple hours and look at the result. Lost maybe 1% over nearly 4 hours. If I leave it on generally over night on wifi + data sync enabled, I lose about 2-3% (depending on the sync times ofc). I sleep approx 6h a night btw
Also feel free looking here and see all the positive comments of people and their battery! (also one of the most active and responsive forum topics around)
Therefore I highly recommend Franco!
Oh now I understand these terms. Thank you guys! I'm considering flashing my phone and change the color settings. I'm really annoyed by those washed out colors!
You know what really annoys me? That when I am on 3g and my screen is locked IT DRAINS my battery SO MUCH. Isn't there any ROM/Kernel that fixes that? I mean the S3 has this even on Stock and unrooted....
Hmm... Somehow my phone gets so warm lately.... I'm kinda worried.

They sure are.. but you can take a pick from like 30-35 presets (using Franco's preset myself). Trust me, the result is just... awesome! (if you prefer AMOLED (cause you refered to an S3, you can also change colors to that, it's in the spreadsheet here (check kernel column to see for your chosen kernel))

I doubt that there is a way around the battery drain with 2G/3G/3G+ but just having a different kernel will do miracles concerning battery life. Always feel free to ask this in the thread, maybe someone has a "solution" to your issue.
I don't know how often you're without wifi. But just make a tasker task like I have:
- "if wifi connected (=state)-> Data off"
- "if not wifi connected -> Data on"

Don't worry about it too much. The nexus 4 is known for having bad thermal handling inside the phone (read this) but it won't harm your phone in any way.
If however you are still worried just download the kernel and go to "Voltages", just press-25mV a couple times (I recommend 3 or 4x). This will reduce the heat generated from your device. (Yes your device can handle this, even more but I'm not responsible )
Another thing is what is getting hot inside your device, battery or CPU? Franco Kernel Updater (app) has Device Monitor which let's you check the CPU temps. If the CPU gets warm/hot too often or too fast, just reducing the max CPU frequency can help you out (1.5Ghz is "too" much anyway, you'll be fine with a couple steps less )
Hope this helped If you have more questions that I could answer, just quote me
