[Q] probably have CG version 7, no root then...? - Defy Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

just making sure-
(after making a very unfortunate mistake)
i have flashed this 2.3.4 SBF: 4.5.1_128,
is it compeletly impossible to root now?
thanks!

2.3.4 is a BL6 or lower, not sure exactly but root is possible with that ROM.
use superoneclick

Can I use voodoo root keeper for SBF files?

Hey!
I was thinking about flashing the Argentinian 2.3.6 ROM on my European Droid Pro.
But since there is no root method available for Moto's 2.3.6 roms, I wounder if voodoo's OTA root keeper will also work when I flash a SBF file? I figured its the only way to have root access after updating.
Has someone already made own experience?

Easiest way to rooted stock 2.3.6 on SGS2 is to root 2.3.4 and then upgrade

I've seen a few questions on the forum asking how to root a 2.3.6 SGS2.
DooMLoRD's Easy Rooting Toolkit was a very easy way to root, without having to flash insecure kernels and all of that, and was great if the goal was just a rooted stock device. It was perfect for me, as all I wanted was AdFree, Titanium and OpenVPN on my device.
Unfortunately, the exploit the Easy Rooting Toolkit used seems to have been fixed in the SGS2 2.3.6 firmware and the toolkit doesn't work any more (see, for example, here).
Before I upgraded from 2.3.4 I prepared myself to mess around with ODIN to get root back after upgrading.
Imagine my delight after upgrading (via OTA), that I still had root without doing anything at all!
So it looks as if upgrading a rooted 2.3.4 stock firmware to 2.3.6 results in a rooted stock 2.3.6 firmware (for I9100XWLA4, at least).
Which means that the easiest way to get to a rooted stock 2.3.6 SGS2 is to root it using DooMLoRD's toolkit before upgrading.
Sorry if this is obvious and, if not, hope someone finds it useful.

not everyone can update or have the option to update OTA!
whats so hard about using ODIN to update then flash CF-ROOT?!
Hi
Nice to hear - I'm on 2.3.5 Nordic and expect an 2.3.6 update before ICS arrives
But also a bit strange that you keept ROOT!
Other attempts using zergRush Exploit on 2.3.6 have failed as far as I know.
Could it have to do with the fact that you updated through OTA and not KIES?

OTAs just replace things that changed - KIES does what is effectively a full Odin flash.

[Q] Question rooting BL7

Apologies if its been answered but couldn't find one. Also it might be silly but still I need to ask.
I've got a Defy+
Version: 4.5.1 -134 DFP-231 which I need to root.
After looking through the forums, I ended up here.
My questions is regarding the files mentioned in the thread we need to flash.
Are those full sbf's? (Do I need to worry about the CG versions?)
And after rooting, In case I need to unroot, will I be able to flash my stock ROM back??
Worry about what? "Upgrading" to BL8? Don't worry, can't get any worse than BL7
yeah.. It can't get worse..
I'll go for it..

These "original full sbf.gz files" should work: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=22491092

I will do in some days. *afraid*
neo.ank, could you tell me what did you do step by step to root your defy, please? Here is so many manual that I'm confused. I have the same version DFP 231 like you have.
Thanks
I've already done it.
I have a question regarding defy+ on 231. If i root it using the new root methods for BL7, will I be able to install a dual boot system, i.e. retaining my stock rom AND adding cm9 (either quarx or epsilon)?
If I can't do the dual boot install, will only cm9 install?

[Q] Downgrade & Bootloader ?

Hi,
I have seen soo many BL7 and Bootloader posts for Defy & Defy+, do these bootloaders in anyway assist Defy users using 4.5.1-134 Orange GB Blur or 4.5.1-128 Orange GB Blur(Android 2.3.4 "Gingerbread" !!BETA!!), downgrade to ANY Froyo sbf ?
What is the use of having BL7 or is it only for Defy+ users to use custom roms ?, I'm confused please help... :S
Thanks,

You got it a little wrong. BL7 doesn't assist in using any ROM. BL7(BootLoader 7) is referred to stock Gingerbread (2.3.6) SBF's from Motorola (for Defy+) which have been signed as version 7. If you have a BL7 ROM on your device (either a stock or flashed one), You CANNOT Downgrade to anything, and will be stuck at 2.3.6

Oh ok I think I got it...!, so basically since I'm still on 2.3.4 I can play with all those custom roms, than those stuck on 2.3.6 who until now had nothing because BL was locked to stock rom and wouldn't allow a custom rom to run ?
Good thing i didn't flash 2.3.6... lol
THAAAANKS NEO.ank !!!

The root methods for previous versions do not work with BL7.Though its rootable, still it cannot downgrade so the custom ROMs for froyo kernel won't work.

I also want to root my Defy+ but I m having some doubts and questions -
Will I be able to revert back to(flash) Stock SBF? I do possess the stock SBF of my region.
Although I am sure it won't but, will the bootloader and stock recovery be affected? And if yes how I am going to COMPLETELY revert back?
Success! Now rooted and running cm9
As for returning it to standard I can't confirm, but once you go. Cm you don't want to go back

- To claim your warranty or to revert any mishap, you HAVE to.

- Build Number 4.5.1-134_DFP-231; Same as the SBFs provided and Sys. ver. is 45.0.2310.MB526.AsiaRetail.en.03(you know, Indian Defy+, assuming they all have same numbers/versions).
What about the BL or recovery, will they affected?

You have a BL7 device.
Don't worry 'bout anything, just go with the modding & whenever you want to revert just flash your stock SBF and your phone will be just as you bought it including recovery and BL.
