[HOW TO] improve battery life for IMM74D android 4.0.4 - Nexus S General

Many people report that battery drain after upgrade their Nexus S to android 4.0.4. So the main reason for that is our android 4.0.4 leaves wifi on even when the phone is sleep.
How to fix: Go to Settings -> Wi-Fi -> Advanced -> Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep -> change it to "only when plugged in" or "never"
And now, my phone's battery can last more than two days

I have found that keeping the WiFi on always actually improves my battery life. This is especially true when there is a weak signal (like in the basement of my house).
With WiFi always on, I get minimal drain (maybe 20% for the entire day) with the standard battery. Without that, I was able to maybe 16 hours before the battery was entirely dead.

How is this any different than just turning Wi-Fi off if you aren't in range?

it doesn't sound like reasonable

If there is wifi network available you should ALWAYS connect to it as opposed to cellular data. Does not matter whether screen is on or off. If you got wifi available use it at all times.

glad someone opened a thread to state the obvious

I find wifi drains significantly more battery than when on the 3G data connection.

How does this help when I'm out in the world with wifi off?

I agree, having wifi off would end up using cellular data, a very quick and fast drain on the battery. If you have wifi most of the time then this shouldn't be disabled, I found that having wifi on all the time actually helps improve battery life since my phone doesn't hog onto the cellular data network. I am around wireless most of the day & night, so I end up using more of WIFI.
This particularly makes sense during the nights, when the phone is hooked onto wifi instead of cellular data.

My dads nexus runs stock unrooted 4.0.4 and he got 2.5 days of battery life from a full charge.. (mobile data on the whole time and wifi to update some apps. Ill try to make a photo if he gets home tomorrow. ( i checked this evening and it was at 29% (2 days and 19hours on battery)

People get those outrageous hours of use because they don't use the phone..I had to switch to my sensation the battery is so bad..my wife knows nothing about phones and she keeps saying after she updated to 4.0.4 the battery is absolutely horrible.**

I think one of the main real culprits for short battey life is the android os bug.. I have android os using more battery than the screen and I had the screen on for at least a hour and a half... quite impossible under normal circumstamces..

Or use battery saver apps, like GreenPower, which you can set to only sync your email and/or apps once every 15 mins./30 mins./1 hr./etc. You can also set it to "Night mode" and schedule it to automatically turn off WiFi and Data connections during a certain period (I set mines at 12am to 7am, so I won't be bothered during sleep with any email and/or app notifications... and also save my NS' battery).

SNS battery dead in 6 hrs or less.

I am posting for a friend that has a SNS. The couple of days he has been draining the battery in about 6 hrs. I looked at the battery usage and it said that the display was at 60% and the graph shows a constant fail of power. I checked and he has the screen set to auto brightness and the screen times out at one minute. The only other thing that I cna think of is that he has poor cell coverage but we are using wifi in that location which his phone is connected to. I understand that poor cell coverage causes power drains but with the major of his data going through the wifi one would think that the cell power drain would be minuscule. Thanks in advance.
It depends on how weak. Data is not going to route over the cellular network, but it will try to maintain a connection for things like calls. Thus the phone will attempt to maintain a connection to the tower unless airplane mode is enabled or the cellular radio is otherwise disabled.
If the signal is really weak then the gain is going to be automatically adjusted to try to boost the signal - this is going to cause an increase in power used, sometimes substantially. If you spend most of the day in this situation then you don't have many options currently if you want to receive calls on the phone (you could look at a SIP solution).
If you don't care about receiving calls just turn on airplane mode and then toggle wifi on.

You need to provide screen on time and awake time. If he just got the phone and is using it a lot.... well then six hours is not bad for an android phone.

Not really. Maybe 6 hours continuous use, something like 3 hours display at 20-50% and 3 hours talk time; that would be normal. But 6 hours low-medium use points out that something is indeed wrong.

60% display means the phone was on and actively used for over 3 hours. That's a fair bit but isn't too much really, but it depends on what else is running durng that time. As mentioned, awake time is also important because it means the phone is actively working at something even though the screen is off. He may have a rogue app that he installed sucking power. Or simply leaving the web browser on a webpage with a regular refresh cycle will cause the browser to continue to run in the background keeping the phone awake while the screen is off. I've gotten in the habit of going back to the google home page when I'm done browsing to make sure it's on a "dead" page.
Anywho, more details are needed to figure it out. Just saying it's only using 60% display isn't enough to find out why the phone only lasts 6 hours. Mine lasts between 24-48 hours depending on usage from heavy to moderate. With light usage I figure the battery would last 3-4 days, but I'm not that light of a user and I generally top up every night anyway as it's better to top up a Li-Ion battery than let it run down all the time.

Huh???
When it says "What's been using the battery" and it says "Display........ 60%"
that just means that the display is responsible of 60% of the battery drain that has occurred since last boot.
For example, if you were at 100%, then turned your phone on for 5 minutes and scrolled back and forth on homescreens, lets say your batter went down to 95%. Well, if 2.5% of that 5% loss is from display, and 2.5% is from Android System, then when you check the battery screen it's going to say "What's been using the batter?"....... Display - 50%; Android system - 50%.
If you did the same thing for 4 hours, and the battery drained down to 20%, you might still see...... Display 50%, Android system - 50%.
In other words, the % has nothing to do with how long the phone has been on.
also if screen on time is 3 to 4 hours, yes the battery will be very low by then.
Thank you all for the advice. As I said this is my friends phone. i don't see him using it a lot we are both programmers so we use a computer for most everything, and we have both our phones on wifi because of the terrible cell signal. I will ask him to try and keep up with everything he does to see his use patterns to see how much he is really using the phone. I will post later on what apps are running and his amount of use. The main reason I am not sure is because this has just started happening with in the last week. We have been in the same location for 6 months and it has just now become a problem.

Hmm...ok that kinda helps, but it doesn't really explain what's happening when it uses that setting. I know that PRL means preferred roaming list, and GSM Auto means it selects automatically, but how it selects and why it uses less battery is what I want to know.

Wifi eating battery!

I kno a lot of people are getting poor wifi reception.. if u find its constantly low and/or switching to 3g it will kill the battery. Its best to switch it off an use 3g or get closer to the router. That's what I always had it set to, but I've seen a ton of threads here and elsewhere which say it's better to just leave the wifi sleep policy to never.
Seem counter intuitive, but apparently it saves more battery life...
funny discovery today, switched on wifi sharing for a while and the battery drain massively( 5% per 10mins). Switched it off and the drain continued, for some reason my computer could still see the wifi spot even though it was off?

Don't know if it falls under the same as wifi sharing... but today I turned wifi off using the toggle button and my battery is alot better.
Its been near 6 hours since unplugged and its had a fair amount of use today as its been shown of to alot of people at work....and in 6 hours my battery has only dropped to 82%...
I used to leave wifi on all the time on my desire hd...with no discernable battery loss....bit I shall be actively turning it off when not in use on my sgs2 as since the difference is massive
My testing yesterday was giving me around 4% an hour drain with my phone sat doing nothing with the screen off!
With wifi toggled off thats dropped to 3% with medium/heavy use

my Battery life
My battery life is dramatically improved. I haven't bothered to look at stats, but I've not used my phone any less, and probably slightly more. Where my battery was lasting maybe 6 hours before, it's consistently at about 14-18% after 12 hours now. There is one way I've found to kill my battery, and that's running navigation. Other than that, it's much improved.
Here are the apps I AM running
bluetooth, GPS, Sync/auto update
tweetcaster
facebook
weatherbug
android central updates
Widget Locker
EasyTether
Lookout
ADWNotifier
Pageonce
and probably a couple of others in the background. I have a nasty habit of just hitting the home button, instead of backing out of apps like I should.
Yes I saw a huge drop on the battery drain, but only when mobile data was enabled. I'm thinking there is something wrong. Im using "batteryminder" and I get less battery with mobile data than i get running wifi. ??? any thots?

Okay so let me get this straight...
Enable wifi always on and 3g will only kick on when no wifi available?
I only see a big battery drain when 3g is enabled and wifi is off.
If I'm outside of wifi coverage though (which is most of my day) battery only lasts for 5 to 6 hours.
Disabling 3g bumps it up to 15 hours

[TIPS] Juice Defender, Why its good and bad

Reading through threads I see lots of people saying JD and similar apps are good and lots saying they are bad. This is quite confusing for someone who just wants to get good battery life. In my experience I have gone from finding it good to finding it bad. I will try and explain why this occurs so that people are able to decide if it will be worthwhile for them.
First install Battery Monitor Widget and find out what sort of drain your battery is experiencing every hour.
With a stock rooted G2 with data connection on continually (no wifi) I was getting around 80-150 mA which explains why it would not last longer that about 16 hours. Most of this drain seems to occur from data connections. After installing JD or something similar the drain can be reduced to around 50 mA. Which is great, suddenly you get the claimed 1.5 to 2x battery life. JD seems great.
But after you install a good ROM and custom kernal, remove or freeze all the apps that keep using your data connection unnecessarily and install Better Battery stats you observe that JD stops the phone going into a proper deep sleep. If you dump it the drain on the phone drops to very low numbers usually under 20mA sometimes 5mA or even 2mA. This means you use around 1-3% of the battery life of the phone overnight with no changes. Now your phone can last days between charges. Note this is with Data or Wifi connections turned on and Sync active always.
Summary:
On a badly set up phone JD improves battery life (for the lazy)
On a well set up phone JD worsens battery life (takes some time)
Note: I got the best results using Speedmods kernal but I have no reason to think that other kernals could not get similarly low battery drains.
Thanks for sharing your observations. I have juice defender and have had similar findings. The wake locks jd causes play into the aos bug of the phone which is why it can make things worse on a well set up phone (the extra drain from the wake locks outweighs the savings from turning the data connection off when it's not in use). If not for the aos bug it would probably be good in all cases. I had noticed this in my testing and am glad to see I'm not the only one.

Thanks for sharing your observations.
If I had seen your post much earlier than I wouldn't have to buy JD. Anyway, I have gone through the hard way, and learnt how to keep my phone organized and minimized rouge apps issue. JD is pretty much useless now.
IMHO, I think Battery monitor widget pro seems to be a much better buy
Thanx for this helpful info!
BTW, kernel not kernal
I do not have a lot of widgets and sync as little as possible. Mail sync is only on demand (when I have time to read it), and Weather is every 6 hour (disabled in night time).
So my battery live is good ½% standby and with normal use it can easily last a full day (no gaming, just Internet, Talk, SMS).
I decided to try JD in order to save even more juice, but JD ended up using more battery than it saved me!
So I can confirm that JD is good for the "lazy user" and bad if your aware of your sync. and how your apps behave.

Sure you can do that, but it's not necessary. I leave wifi and 3g on and still have drain of 5mA all night. I wake up and have lost almost no battery. The same applies for when the phone is idle during the day.

The problem is that the WiFi antenna in the One is so bad that I die at 3 hours. And if I go in the bathroom, the phone freezes of I get a call.
There are some serious radio bugs with this device. Like the 45 second handshake from 4G to LTE (S4 is 5 seconds max) - doesn't usually cause a problem but for some reason T-Mobile drops from LTE to 2G within 10 seconds on the phone unless it is locked to WCDMA only in my area (we are blanketed in HSPA here in Denver, we are two blocks from the Capitol!) but then takes 30 seconds after a call to go on HSPA then another 45ish to get back on LTE, sometimes 2-3 minutes!
As for WiFi, both my S3 in an Otterbox Defender and my old S4 (given to roommate, long story) get WiFi all the way to the elevator. The One can't even make it to the toilet :/
