hey guys just wanted to post in the general forum ...
The past few days my power button on my phone hasn't been working at all. Wether I had it in recovery, in the main OS or even if the phone was off i couldn't even turn it on. I was running the Sense port for our nexus s.
I didn't think software could affect hardware like this, but i flashed 4.0.4 and within 15-20 minutes the power button was functional again....
is this normal ? wtf is going on ...
comment below your opinion
Maybe it fixed itself? I would say it had to do with the Sense port, but since you said it didn't work in recovery, that probably isn't it...interesting
I had the same problem about 3 months ago. The power button wasn't working on the unofficial 4.0.4 port from the Nexus S 4G. It worked on and off for about a week and then it stopped working all together. I don't think it's the ROM i'm pretty sure it's just the build quality of our phones basically.. ****ting out if you will. I just sent mine in through Best Buy Black Tie protection.
Yeah mine broke a while ago (not entirely, it would register like one out of 10 presses or something) and I had to send it back to Samsung for repair...luckily it was free because it was still under warranty...
This topic comes up periodically and it's suspected that this is a dalvik cache-related issue. People that frequently flash roms or kernels don't typically report this problem, as their cache and dalvik is wiped on a regular basis.
Some users have reported that their intermittent power button problems disappear after wiping dalvik. It's quite suspicious, but search General and Q&A for similar threads.

I bought my NS back in February. And have had issues.with:
Phone calls not going in
Dropped calls
GPS problems
Random reboots.
Loops when it reboots and weird colors (8bit?)
Wifi problems (have to be almost next to the router)
Lag at times (with stock browser and Firefox)
However, I'm going to miss:
The screen. (Bigger)
The storage. (1GB vs 256MB I think)
So what do you guys think? All the NS problems I have seen on stock, CM7, CM7 nightlies, Bionix NS. With different kernels. So I come to believe its the phone.

If you're seeing all of the above on stock after wiping cache/dalvik-cache then you need a new phone (Assuming you had no call issues with your N1 on t-mo in the same area) - these are not normal "bugs".
The browser could be better, I agree, but I've never had any of those other things on the stock ROM. Sounds to me like you either have a bad phone or run bad ROMs. Never used anything other than stock personally, so I can't tell you anything useful about that.
I've had none of your problems, and now when Dice Player was released, I haven't got a single bad thing to say about this phone, it's amazing.
I have a NS since december 20ths and had some bugs that you mention, but now they were gone. No more reboots and gps is fine..
Im running full stock...
maybe your unit is damaged
Ive had since release back in dec
-Think i had like 2 dropped calls but found it was when i took phone away from my ear id accidentally hit end button when i put back to my ear...
sensor wasn't quick to react
-A few reboots but was becasue i was using a dev kernel and it was in early stage not to mention i was OC.
-Not a single problem with GPS
-WIFI always works FYI i piggyback off my neighbors wifi when needed so we have quite a distance from each other
-Yes there is browser lag its becasue its not using hardware acceleration...blame that on google not the actual phone hardware
OP sounds like you need a replacement
this phone is miles above the N1.
Howdy,
I've had my tab for a very long time and have always had this issue where when under load the screen would stop responding to touch and I'd have to lock and unlock the device to get it functional again. It didn't matter if it was stock firmware or any of the various roms out there. It always does it. I was hoping that the ICS update would fix whatever the problem was but it does not seem to have done so. Is anyone else seeing this issue on ICS?
This has been an extremely frustrating issue with this device.
Thanks
I have never had any of the issue you described. Are you doing anything in particular that makes the tab freeze like this? So far the ICS custom Rom is just peachy for me. Faster and smoother than the HC versions.
Yes, I also have this problem. I have tried many different roms but problem is more or less the same with all of them (stock, cm9,cm10).
Today I have sent it to Samsung service center, let's hope they can fix it otherwise it goes in the trash.
I only noticed today, first day with official ics. Sometimes the screen is unresponsive, but after I press 2-3 times it works and it doesn't need to lock it.
Sent from my amazing 10.1 galaxy tab
I've has the same issue in starting in Jellybean, where a lock and unlock would fix it.
However, I've had moments where it stopped responding totally, while Android itself was still running fine, and I had to reboot to get it back up. That's happened to me everywhere.
Thanks for the replies. It's happening way more often for me on ICS than it did on HC. It used to happen once or twice a day but it happened 5 times last night. It's almost making the tab unusable. I've talked to a several people around here that have the same tablet and about half mention it happening so it's probably a common issue. As far as I know though no solution.
you can tell when it happens that it's not the os locked up. The volume buttons will show the the volume slider and holding down power will give you the shutdown menu. The screen is just not responding.
Please let me know if Samsung fixes it for you.

Okay, I'll let you know. I´m not very optimistic that they can fix it, but I had to do something. Yesterday I almost break the tab in half when it freeze all the time. After reboot it took about one minute before first lock up and then I had to lock/unlock and after another 30 seconds it freeze again and again and again......
So got pretty pissed and just sent it away.
Will probably take a few weeks to get it back.
Ever since I flashed custom HC and now stock rooted ics, all lag and freezing has disappeared. Before that it was extremely laggy and needed a reboot every day or two as it got extremely slow. And I'm running sslauncher which is generally not a smooth as some others. But now it just flies.
Sometimes a factory reset, wipe and restore of titanium backups helps a great deal.

Do you have the 10.1N? I had the exact same issue 2 days ago and I was about to throw the tab outside the window. There are some apps that did the freeze for me...only ones. If this will continue with the stock ics for 10.1N. .. I am going to send it to the service center. I never had such an issue with CM9 or custom roms. Maybe we should all report to Samsung instead of here. They might look into it.

I have the GT-P7500 and it doesn't matter what rom I have. My problem occur even after a factory reset and no apps installed so I doubt it´s any specific application that makes the freeze.
Will keep you all updated if they do anything about it.

So, that is even worse than me. Good luck...but still I think we should send the complains towards Samsungs. How else would they know that there's a problem?
I've got the GT-P7510 as well. It's gotten really bad with Jellybean. I always figured it was the touch screen driver being the issue. I know there are ways you can cause it to happen by tweaking driver settings. I really was hoping that the update to the 3.x kernel would cause them to release a new driver and fix it but it looks like in some cases it makes the issues way worse.
Am I the only one? Every Jelly Bean ROM has the same problem. Sometimes it freezes, and it won't do a thing, I can't even unlock it, it just sits there, black, I can only reboot it by pulling out the battery. It's so annoying. At least 4 times a day. How do I fix this? I tried PA, Stock JB, and now I'm on latest CM10 nightly, I wiped cache and dalvik every time before I flashed a new ROM.
I hope you can help me.
Even I have problem with JB , it hangs for 2 3 seconds n becomes normal. No need to pull the battery n all , it becomes normal by itself. Using stock 4.1

I had the same issue - except that I was in ICS stock...
got worse and worse in time - in the end I even couldn't use my keyboard anymore (whole lower part was unresponsive)
I testet it with some apps from the market which showed that the lower part of my screen didn't response to any inputs
solution was to take my nexus s to a repair center and they replaced the whole touch screen unit
Can you send me links of those apps? My touchscreen responds well but the problem is that the phone entirely hangs, and when I lock it, I can't unlock it anymore. It is I9023

that's the way it started on my phone as well
- sometimes it did not respond to slide to unlock (OUPS may I say slide to unlock or am i getting sued by apple now)
- some characters on the keyboard did not work or it randomly selected any character
- whole lower part of keyboard didn't work
and so on...
this one showed that the lower part did not respond to inputs...

Wipe data/factory reset before flashing a ROM. Stock launcher was also causing big freezes on early 4.1 builds. Have you tried with another launcher?

I think I fixed it. I deleted a MIUI folder on my SD card. Dunno what was it doing there, wipe didn't include it I guess. It took about 200mb of data from MIUI ICS to JB I had some time ago. It doesn't lag now.
I hope this helps someone.

Most Jellybean ROMs run much better than any previous versions for me on my Nexus S 4G. I always wipe and format all relevant partitions. I also at one point wiped the internal/SD storage on my phone. I have seen a weird flicker then freeze happen on all JB Roms/kernels but only happens once a month if less. Currently running RASBEAN JELLY and Bedalus's Marimite 4.7 kernel. Maybe try different launchers? Also try running phone without doing Google Restore. Slowly add back apps to identify the prob. Don't get why so many are having these issues w JB

As the title states. Nexus 4 random power offs. Has anyone seen anything like this?
Here is the background info:
My parents have Nexus 4 phones as do I. All of our phones were ordered at the same time about 2 months or so ago when they became available again. All phones are the 16GB version. All phones bone stock with just OTA updates, not unlocked or rooted other than how they are shipped. All using T-Mobile prepaid plans.
My phone and my father's seem fine. My mom's however seems to shutdown on its own. It is random. Initially I thought that it may be an issue where she isn't used to a smart phone and isn't charging it enough. It happens though at times while it is connected to the charger. It also has happened while carrying it off the charger.
One odd thing is that when they got the phone they brought them to my house and dropped them off to have me set them up. One had the plastic screen protector with the printing on it from the factory the other didn't. I don't know which is which though now. It is a 50/50 shot if this is the one.
I have been around android since the G1 days and run the same phone. I can't think of a setting on the phone that would power it down at a certain time or period of time. She really doesn't have much for apps and is a very light user.
Not sure what to try but I was thinking about doing a wipe of the phone to see if it helps.
Anyone else have any ideas? If the wipe doesn't help the only other thing I can think of is that there is a physical issue with the phone.
I haven't seen this on my phone but there was a period of time where HD Widgets on my N7 would cause a reboot. That was fixed with an app update. This isn't a case where the device reboots. It is a complete shutdown which I find odd. So I have seen an app cause issues kind of like this. For the most part the apps that she has on her phone, I also have on mine. Well I have way more but there really isn't anything on her phone that I am not also running.
I should add that she has the phone in a TPU case. As we all do. My case design is a little different than theirs but they have cutouts for the buttons. So it isn't a case where the case is pressing on the power button. That could be an issue with my case as it covers the power button but I haven't had that issue.
Thanks
Sounds like it might be a defective battery...

That is what I am kind of thinking. Either the battery or the smart battery chips. I think I will try a wipe first but like I said but it is odd.

That sounds kind of questionable (fishy) to me... I also have the 16GB version, and I also did the OTA when I got it. But to be honest the stock OS lasted only about an hour before I rooted and started trying out custom ROMs I have not had the issue you're describing though. How are the results from your factory reset?
Also, would you consider putting on a stock-based custom ROM (such as rasbean vanilla) for your mother's phone? If the problem is software based then a reset or a new ROM might yield different results. But if the problem persists it might be hardware and I'd suggest you contact Google about servicing.

I don't want to root and have my mom run a modified ROM. They live about a half hour from me so I haven't tried a wipe of the phone yet and because of the distance I don't want to deal with the issues that sometimes come up when you go with modified ROMs when I am not there. She is a very basic user and this is the first smartphone for my father and mother. Keep in mind they are in their early 70s and not really that strong on the tech side of things. I have to get some time to run over there and take a look at it. Maybe later next week.
I was just wondering if anyone else has had this issue. I think if a wipe doesn't help I will talk to Google. A search really didn't show much other than some people that were seeing a random reboot issue. I have seen apps doing that.
I have been through their warranty replacement process and it is a bit of a PITA. I am on my 3rd Nexus 7 due to hardware issues with the first 2. My N4 and my fathers have been rock solid.
While I have run custom ROMs in the past, I usually run stock until I find a need that requires me to root. Eventually I will probably root and go with a custom ROM on my N4 but

Yeah, I know what you mean. I'm giving my parents my old LG P990 phone and I just put an AOKP rom on it. I also installed Nova Launcher for them and configured it so there's just one texting app and one calling app the one and only one homescreen. No dock either, just in case they click something by accident or get lost in the app drawer
Since you have the same phone as your mom, a self-less workaround would just be to give her yours (pre-configured), and then you can fiddle around with the problematic one until you find a decent solution. :good:

Hmm. That is a good idea. The PITA part would be to get everything loaded from my phone to hers. I really wish I could run Titanium backup without root as it would make it super easy to move the apps over. Though I don't have that much loaded on my phone. Things that are a pain to set up have configuration export methods like Tasker. It would rule out the end user being the source of the issue. I don't think that is it though. If we swap and it goes away, then I can consider the wipe as the solution. If the problem moves to me then it is a physical issue and call Google. If the problem persists with her, I load all her apps on the phone I carry as well to see if I start to have the issue or it becomes a training issue. The thing I like about this the most is that it is a clear process to rule out several things. I can go over there and sit with the phone but if it doesn't power off when I am there I don't gain much other than spending some time with my parents.
I don't think this is an issue but I did have to provide my IMEI# when doing the activations. In the past though on T-Mobile I have handed phones down to others and all we did was a SIM swap. I would imagine that is the case here.
Oh and one thing I did leave out. They were using their old cell phone chargers on the N4 phones. I told them to swap chargers and use the ones that came with the phone. The old ones may not put out enough power and the phone could in theory run down to the point where it shuts off and slowly charge from that point and I don't think it would turn back on. Keep in mind a retired user who just had a knee replacement so she is at home more often than not.
Did you find out the cause? I have the same issue happened twice today

Just wondering if this is something of a user fault from bad/incorrect flashing? or hardware/software from ASUS/Google problems.
If you have a dead N7 from whatever reason other than dropping it or dunking it in water. Please respond, perhaps if there is a significant number of people with problems not caused by physical or water damage. We can with the help of some legal advisors bring this to the attention of ASUS/Google and they might change their minds and do something about all of us???
My died after 5.0.1 OTA update. It booted without problem and worked pretty bad and I rebooted it few times and after some time it didn't booted any more. Recovery worked but I could not unlock bootloader. Luckily I had warranty for one more month and they switched motherboard free of charge. And few hours ago I updated to 5.1.1 (ota) and it works great now (I have three users and there is just small lag when switching between them). Hope it will stay like that.
Mine just keeps rebooting after the Google title and then it gets these lines running on a blank screen then shuts off.

Np. If its still broken after post more info and it can be figured out.
My sister's N7 is a refurbished model and it has constantly been giving her problems, it would always after a month or so of usage would reboot and bootloop. I would have to boot into recovery and wipe cache or factory reset or even flash the stock image again to get it working. I just got back from being away and its now completely dead, won't even charge. It was running stock 5.1

Sounds like failed memory, or memory controller, by the symptoms of reboots after a month that were fixed by a wipe and reinstall. Once it got to a certain level of storage usage it failed, you wiped, and the cycle repeated. Unfortunately it is probably dead. The good news is you can pick up a replacement motherboard for a very reasonable price on eBay.
Update!
So for my issue, it was the battery.
First, I tried to flash the stock image. Still restarted and got the lines. It drove me nuts!
Something inside me said to order a new battery from amazon for $20.00.
I did that, installed the new battery, flashed, and my nexus 7 is back in action. For those that are going through the fuzzy lines and restarting issue, you guys might want to try that. Worked out for me. Cheers!
Edit: I'm not sure if I would like to go back to updating all the way to 5.1 yet. But 4.1 works for me. [emoji28]

I like to keep a tablet with me at all times because of the nature of my work. and this fits in my pocket assuming a don't have a case. I find the note for a little too small to work on. it's a great device for the money and I'll keep buying them as long as I keep breaking them or they keep dying for something else this size comes on the market at this price. my only real gripe is that the graphics abilities if these devices are a little weak.

I wish I did the same, I let my N7 update to 5.1.1 and its so slow, even removed many apps like "Facebook" and tweaked everything. I dont think the 1st generation N7 is up to par with 5.1.1. Might have to unlocked and downgrade to 4.4.4....
