Unrootable now? (4.5.621 firmware) - Droid X General

I recently had to have my Droid X replaced bc it got messed up beyond repair. When I got my replacement I was too lazy to root it. Then, it upgraded to the 4.5.621 firmware. I didn't think anything of it bc there's always been a rooting method available whenever new firmwares come out. The other night I decided to sit down and root my phone, so I hopped online to check the latest rooting method instructions. Unfortunately, I very quickly found that my phone CAN'T be rooted on this firmware. Furthermore, I read that I can't even sbf to an older firmware either now bc of security features built into this one. The only way I've read that I can root ir do anything with this phone now is by using a milestone X sbf and then rooting it from there. I feel really iffy about this method bc I don't like the idea of flashing another phone's firmware on this phone. Does anyone know of any other rooting methods I could use instead?

There isn't another rooting method.
He method if flashing the Milestone X SBF is completely safe. The only catch is that you have to flash the SBF in Linux, which isn't difficult at all.

go over to rootzwiki and read the entire thread on how to do this process so you know what to do and what not to it will be under root for .621 found there are a couple videos in the thread that show the process using linux ubuntu on a pendrive when you create it make sure that you create a persistant drive on your ubuntu pendrive so that you can copy the files to the home folder to avoid having to search for them in the terminal I used two usb drives 1 8gig and 1 2gig. the 8gig I created the ubuntu bootable drive with a large persitant drive of 3 gigs for enough space to add as many files as I wished on the 2 gig I simply just formatted and copied the sbf file and the sbf_flash file to be copied to the home folder for ease of use do not attempt to delete files from your ubuntu bootable only add you will corrupt the drive and have to create a new one read the thread at rootzwiki before proceeding it will help

[Samsung Moment] Root Instructions

EDIT: This information is out dated now but visit the link below for updated info.
taken from here http://www.samsungmomentforum.com/rooting/root-access-(finally-achieved!)/
1) Partition your SD Card to have first partition as fat16 and second ext3 [this tutorial assumes you have this setup exactly as stated]
2) Boot in Test Mode with Call+Center+Power
3) copy root into your tools directory of the sdk
4) adb push root /system
5) adb shell chmod 0755 /system/root
6) adb shell /system/root
7) unplug usb, remove battery, reboot into test mode when instructed
8) adb shell
9) /system/bin/btld_testmode
10) /system/root
Excellent. It work!. Just do exatly the steps above. Thanks for putting all this info together.
FYI... Samsung post the source code of the samsung moment.
Is this temp or persistent root? For temp root I don't think partitioning the sd card is necessary or at least I didn't partition it when I temp rooted my Moment.
Was a long time WinMo user, I was stuck with a Moto Q9c on sprint for way to long. I'm still stuck with sprint, but got the Moment in hopes of having a badass Android to start with.
Night and Day compared to my Q, the root is key though, custom rom's were so easy on the Q.
soooo im a newb to android, same question as johnbarry3434.
does it stick?
I've got two Moment's(thanks sprint for shipping me 2 and charging me for neither) ?maybe one for test purposes?
Anything I can do to help the rooting process, please let me know
Sorry guys but I'm very new to this android. Only had my phone for a week now. Is rooting like flashing a custom ROM for the Touch Pro?
Does this require seperate adb drivers for the Samsung phone?? If so where can I get them and are there any avaliable for Ubuntu???
Hi guys,
I have just gotten myself a Samsung Spica. Can I use this guide as well? Is there a ROM-update tool for the Spica?
I'm really n00b, so any help is appreciated
I need someone with this rooted phone to contact me, I need to get some data from it so I can work on something for it.
Please contact me at [email protected]
Thanks
hey look i am brand new to this whole root thing i just got my moment two days ago i am used to the simple jailbreak iphone stuff but this is a whole new level
i am on windows vista and i do not understand any of this at all please someone email me some simpler instructions or make a video or something just to help me out in some way please and thank you
my email: [email protected]
use the search Service people
Now that moment is rooted?
Will there be any chance of us getting a custom rom of andorid using sense ui?
i dont really see any point in rooting my phone if there is no MAJOR thing you can do with it..
I cannot get my samsung to root
I have the updated cupcake cl14 and when I boot my phone with talk+center+power, I boot into a test mode that lets me test the screen, keyboard, and so on. I did copy the root file (supplied from the instructions ) to the main part of my card on both partitions, and partitioned it just as it stated in the 1st step. I don't understand what the "adb" is and how to use it. Can this only be down with windows because I'm am using Ubuntu. I know adb is advance debugging bridge but after some google searches I still don't know how to use it. I now a little about chmod 0755 because of Ubuntu but any "hand-holding" instructions would be great thankyou to everyone who is willing to help me and others out with this problem.
Is there still no "real" benefit for root access for the Moment? As in no good reason to root the phone? My girlfriend has one and I was hoping that it was at least close behind my Hero by now in terms of root access benefits....TIA

just got my phone and can't increase the size of the fonts was told rooting is the only way even with using spare parts.
first of what program can I use to partition the sd card I am running windows XP. and everything I have downloaded today would only see the internal drive.
For those of you still looking for how to root your Samsung Moment (you don't have to use your SDCard either) there are two HOW TOs posted at PPCGeeks under the NON-WM DEVICES>ANDRIOD>SAMSUNG MOMENT
One explains how to root phone with CJ05
The other explains how to root phones that have CL14 out-the-box or officially updated to CL14
I would post a link except I'm not permitted to post an outside link... just go to PPCGeeks(dot)com and click on their forum
So what Now!!!!
Okay I see you have this placed here.. I like... I have a Nexus and 2 Droids, wife and mine.. Nexus ALL mine.. HAHAHA..
My sister, wifes sister, she has the Moment.. I have always wanted to root this just cause of the 800mhz processor... This was the first device to almost meet up with the Nexus before it was even thought up..
Is there Roms, Themes, Kernels, etc.. I see nothing, but a root, useless, without an accommodation, thanks anyway, always good to have the key to the door first..
Somebody, PM me if not on, or reply here, I'll come back around...
cool that i made the front page but the info is out dated now.
yes this info is way outdated. just flash the kernel with speedyrabbit's or joeykrim's kernel and you'll have persistent root, plus a much faster phone.
also, speedyrabbit's kernel has wifi tether and flash_image support. you can download from www(dot)sdx-developers(dot)com.

can't root my aria to save my life :(

please help i have tried to read everything looked everywhere and i cant not get past the loop it doesnt find my device have tried multiple sd cards and still cant get it please help me
yahoo im: jdm_labrat
did you try this its the only way that worked for me. If you dont have Ubuntu you can create a live usb (youll need two usb ports to do this)
Or try the this I personally havent tried this but its worth a shot
Try the second SD card inject trick to force recover
The trick is outline here hxxp://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-714224.html and can be used in conjunction with PC or Mac using a second card formatted in HFS+ Journaled or NTFS. Sounds hard but I got recovery on first try with this method. If you are still getting permission errors when trying to push files, you may just try formatting the card with the phone itself (which goes against traditional wisdom). This worked for me using Clockwork with attn's prerooted Liberated_Aria rom.
do u have debugging on in settings? that was the problem i had
Just use the unrevoked app.
got it did the unrevoked version someone should sticky that one and a step by step guide the slideroot sucks and its just about worthless
Unrevoked is the way to go. It's easy as pie. I tried the other methods for two days. Unrevoked took 5 min.
Please avoid creating new threads for existing topics. Before creating a new post or thread, you should read all available information in the many Aria rooting threads.

(Guide) Flash SBF to Motorola Atrix 4G
I was hoping to get some help.
I have an unrooted Atrix. It's my first Android phone. I already installed the latest update, 1.5.7, when it came out.
I'd like to roo the phone, but according to the above link I have to flash back to 1.2.6. I think I can handle the rooting process, but the flashing to the prior build is what I'm confused on how to do.
Am I understanding this correctly?:
1. I download the 1.2.6 file. Question: (What is the 1.5.2 file?)
2. Download the RSDLite 5 and install it.
3. I have a Windows Vista 32 bit system, so install the
32 bit file since I'm not rooted.
4. Then follow the instructions...turn off phone, ect..
5. On Step 7... Load up the SBF file, that would be the 1.2.6 file correct? I'm asking because I don't know what that 1.5.2 file mentioned earlier is. Does it matter where this file is extracted to on my computer?
After this is all done then do I I go to this page
[SCRIPT] GladRoot v4.2 (Bell 0.37.4, AT&T 1.26/1.52/1.57 Supported - Now w/ UnRoot) and do the first set of instructions?
Sorry for all the questions. I'm new to this and don't want to brick the phone. I really want that Titanium Backup program so I can backup and freeze some things.
Thank you
Don
I had the 1.5.7 update without root and a few days ago I did the same thing.
1. I download the 1.2.6 file. Question: (What is the 1.5.2 file?).
just get the 1.2.6 file
2. Download the RSDLite 5 and install it.
yes
3. I have a Windows Vista 32 bit system, so install the
32 bit file since I'm not rooted.
yes
4. Then follow the instructions...turn off phone, ect..
yes
5. On Step 7... Load up the SBF file, that would be the 1.2.6 file correct?
yes
I'm asking because I don't know what that 1.5.2 file mentioned earlier is. Does it matter where this file is extracted to on my computer?
no
After this is all done then do I I go to this page
[SCRIPT] GladRoot v4.2 (Bell 0.37.4, AT&T 1.26/1.52/1.57 Supported - Now w/ UnRoot) and do the first set of instructions?
if you have AT&T yes. Extract it so that it's C:\GladRootv4.2. When you run gladroot.bat be sure to answer yes to the question "Are you updating an AT&T Atrix on 1.26 to 1.57? [y/n]"
I got the adb "Unable to detect device" error whenever I ran the scripts. Just run the command adb services in a command prompt (You should see a device name as output) while in the C:\GladRootv4.2 directory for your computer to detect your phone properly and then run the script.
It's fairly painless, the SBF flash can take a while, 15-20 minutes or so. You will lose nearly everything that's on the phone, so save what you want to keep. I did notice the ringtones that I saved onto the phone (not on the sd card) were still there.
Root explorer is more interesting IMO.
Cheaper than TB.
Just need to rename apk bay adding a .bak to freeze them.
Thanks for the quick replies. These forums are great!!
One last question. Once rooted, if Motorola comes out with future updates, will this process need to be repeated for each update?
Thanks again.

i'd rather pay for few bucks for TB to have a quick and easy "freeze"/"unfreeze" button than to keep going in and manually renaming apks.
plus you can do all the root exploring and file managing that you want for FREE with super manager (in market).

Not sure, it depends how devs here on xda manage to root a future build. If the approach is the same as what is available now (preserve root in current build, update, restore root) you will not need to do the flash, lose everything etc. only if you run gladroot.bat prior to the official update. If you install the official update without running gladroot.bat then you'll have to go through the fun that is SBF flash.
I have a question about this as well, so I thought I'd ask here instead of a new thread...but at the drivers section of the instructions, it says just download them but if I've rooted my phone I should already have them. But if I've connected my phone to my computer by USB before just to transfer files, even if I haven't rooted, should I already have the right drivers?

Maybe. I would just install the specified drivers listed just to be safe. It's not a very large install file.

Alright, fair enough! Thanks for the help!
EDIT: Actually one more question. Does flashing the original SBF clear my phone? If it does, how can I backup everything on there if I'm currently unrooted? (I'm flashing this so that I CAN root later on). I'm not too worried about this I guess but I should be prepared anyway...

[Q] Rooting the GT 10.1 via a Mac??

So I've poured over the potentially relevant threads and I haven't found anything about how to go about rooting the Tab on a Mac. I've rooted a Xoom on a Mac before, which was no problem using adb, but does adb recognize the Tab as a device (given the lack of Mac file reading compatibility otherwise) or is there another trick I'll need to know? Obviously at some point I'd need the new Kies for Mac, but is this all I'll need in order for adb to work? The only guides I've seen pertain to rooting through a PC, which is no help to me unfortunately. I don't have my Tab yet, but I was hoping to get a feel for what lies ahead once it arrives.

IT WAS A DEVELOPMENT (ROOTING) QUESTION, not a general question, so now its in a less appropriate place, but whatever
Anybody?
Regardless if it was a rooting question. Development forums are for development releases like kernels, roms, mod instructions. Questions are asked in the General forum.
As for your question:
In order to get a reliable root you must install CWM. In order to flash CWM you must use nvflash which is a windows command line tool. So there is currently no way to do this from a mac. TBH there may never be a way to do this from mac. I would suggest getting a copy of windows and use bootcamp as I have.

Well at this point I do have Parallels, so I'm guessing I should be able to use that as my means of installing CWM, as per the instructions found in the thread in the development section, yes?
Correct. But! I've tried this stuff before from parallels with limited to no success. You need to boot from windows(bootcamp). So that windows has full control of your hardware. I've never been able to get paralleled windows to see things right for this kind of stuff.

That is the guide that you want to follow. Once your are done flashing CWM you can then just drop the busybox and root zips on your SD card like you normally would with your mac and flash with CWM.

Yeah but in order to do this wouldn't I have to have a copy of a Windows CD (which I have no access to)? And obviously I'm not about to drop $$$ on a damn Winblows CD just to be able to root. This seriously sucks.
Now I do have access to my work PC, which runs XP. Might you have a rough estimate on how long the steps in that guide would take, should I decide to try doing it here at the office?? I could of course get the files, drivers, etc all set up in advance, so take that part out of the equation. Just wondering on how long in terms of installing CWM; once I have that I can root at home later that night.
...and actually, once I get CWM installed on the 10.1 I should really have no need to connect to it for adb (or at least very very rarely) in the future, correct? I mean it seems like the main hump to get over for a Mac owner is to just get a custom recovery on the 10.1, and after that everything else is just all about flashing (from recovery that is). Would that be a fair statement??
It seriously took me like 10-15 min to run through the steps from none root to CMW, Busybox, and root. I did it at my desk at work eating lunch on my bootcamp Win7 x64.

Have you tried "*228"? I had that problem after an OTA upgrade to gb.
Have found SBF, but am getting "Critical Errors 1337 & 510B"
The tale...
* Had Milestone X rooted using one of several methods readily available for download.
** Overzealously updated using the OTA about two weeks ago from Motorola without removing Superuser or Busybox.
*** Messed up and tried to flash using a verizon sbf to return phone. (Didn't brick it, but it would stop at the boot loader with errors waiting for a reflash from usb.
**** Got a warranty return!
*****Tried different methods to no avail!
************************************************************
Thought because of the info in this URL that I'd screwed up in returning my phone or trying to flash in the first place (just needed to use the adb interface to uninstall, remove, the files from their locations) and reinstall-->
WARNING for Droid X: Previously rooted DX owners who took an OTA update and then lost root should proceed with caution. This seems to only work flawlessly on SBF'd DX's or fully factory stock ones(read: never been rooted). The problem is with getting Superuser installed because it is already on your phone from when you were rooted previously.

If you are trying to root from the OTA Gingerbread update and you were previously rooted, you will probably experience problems with this root method because of the pre-existence of busybox and superuser.apk. For that reason, you may need to attempt both the script method (for Windows XP users) and program executable method (Windows Vista/7 users). If you are still having problems, please follow these instructions:
Open a Command Prompt in the folder where you extracted the one-click root package (see instructions for rooting). If you are using Windows 7, you can just use Shift+Right-Click on the folder you extracted the package and choose to "Open a command prompt here". For other operating systems or versions of Windows, you may require some DOS experience or need to Google how to change directories.
In the command prompt, type the following command:
adb shell
If you receive any kind of error, then you may not be in the folder where you extracted ADB.exe or you may need to reboot your computer, your phone, or check the connection. You should receive an ADB prompt ending with either a # or a $.
If the line ends with a $, then run the one-click exploit for Windows XP (even if you have Windows Vista or 7) and only complete step 1.
When you have adb shell ending with a #, type the following commands:
mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/system /system
rm /system/bin/su
rm /system/xbin/su
Ignore any messages that warn you about the file not being found/missing. We're removing old copies of su/superuser which are causing this one-click root method to fail.

NOW TRYING TO GO BACK TO 2.2.2 Froyo! Why, so I can try to root uninstalling the Su and Busybox rooting after OTA update. Would reinstall and try later.
************************************************************
Since I've gotten a fresh phone but the 2.3.5 update applied, I'm trying to return it to 2.2.2 stock. I've tried two different SBF claiming to be the correct ones. The one that is recognized by 4.9 RSDLite can be found here-->sites.google.com/site/1kdsdroidx/home/milestone-x-sbf-files
But I get those funky errors for which I can see no end except maybe trying XP. I've placed at the root of C: and given RSDLite administrative privs.
************************************************************
The other one that I've tried is named SHADO_X6_3.2.6_SHADOW_BP_C_02.06.00R_AP_BP_Flex_21_signed_secure_cell_south_1ff_P3_USERBLD.sbf.gz
but isn't even recognized!

Oh yes, I may have to crank up Debian or Kubuntu (have been with Debian since Inspiron 8200 and bf2.4 ! Just have gotten spoiled by Kubuntu (apt-get from terminal though) on this same laptop. They're already installed.
Just kinda frustrated. I've done a bit of homework and gotten a bunch of bought sense. Please help me out. Maybe I just get back to 2.2.2 and wait or try to root, remove offenders, and re-root.
Thanks.
a Droid X and Milestone X are different. Which do you have?
Yup, using Milestone X now to write thiz reply. I'm getting the idea that somehow the OTA blocks downgrading. This OTA has hosed tethering even with Easy Tether unless, there's user error. I'd like to go back to 2.2.2 cause it was a cinch to root. The interface for 2.3.5 is just plain easier to use. I can deal w Froyo though. Any help would be appreciated.

Almost forgot, cellular south....C-Spire. Need it to tether wirelessly to post grades and lesson plans online when my renter is just to slow to get a line added for at&t. Heck, took 9wks just to get gas hooked up.
I don't know specifics about cellular south or how the milestone x, different from the DX, but you should be able to sbf back to froyo kernel if the sbf for your carrier and version exist. Also, tethering without the carriers permission requires root and you said you lost it.
Sent from my DROIDX using xda premium
Have tried to sbf using rsdlite 4.9 and files listed in my first post. Using rsdlite with one file yields errors of 510B and 1337. The other file after decompression is not even recognized. I've been looking all over for those errors and have not found a definitive explanation. Furthermore, I've used both Windows 7, administrative rights, and XP in an administrative account with the files always at the root of the drive with the same ends.
Also, I've running installs of Debian and Kubuntu, but think I'll run into similar problems/errors. If I find someone who hasn't performed the update, reverted their phone back to stock, could I generate that sbf file?
Any suggestions about the errors or recreating a viable sbf file? How about using rsdlite 4.8, an earlier version?
Thanks.
just got my milestone x already had 2.3.5 update on it. can i root?
not at the time of this post that I can tell, unless you can sbf back to froyo (2.2.2) and apply one of the many rooting solutions found on the net.
I believe, more than look and feel, or even functionality or bug fixes, that 2.3.5 more so than the other releases offered by other carriers such as 2.3.4, was to do away with rooting or more likely tethering (wirelessly).
I've gotten errors or an unrecognized sbf from those found on the net (reputable sources) that would revert me back to froyo.
I'll list my steps to the error within a couple of days to see if it were just operator error.

you may be right, about the reason for the update. it's a real let down, just upgraded from my rooted hero (that i was forced to turn in (well forced is a way of saying they gave me $80. in trade for it)) to the x and i love it just want my wireless tether back. i can still tether with easytether (paid version) using usb. haven't tried pdanet yet. (i think pdanet allows for wireless connections. been a while since i used it) nope... no wifi tether with pdanet.
otherwise i will more than likely just wait until one of these amazingly intelligent devs figures out how to root it.
i have seen this asked but i haven't found a good answer, is it possible to pull the stock sbf from a non-rooted phone? and if so is there somewhere that the instructions are available.
i am new to motorola, coming from htc, so please forgive my ignorance if this is all common knowledge stuff.
