You have to download whatever stuff you want to read/watch/listen to. It has maybe one sample of a manual book (can't remember), but that's pretty much it.
Books you have download and movies are streamed from the nextflix app or if you're a prime member from there videos app built into the UI. Music is also streamed and I do believe you have the option to download music from the cloud onto the internal memory.

This is the biggest issue with android in general for me. There is no official movie/TV download service. Blockbuster has an app on some devices but not a lot. Streaming movies and TV is worthless for plane rides or those of us with wifi only tablets..
Are there any legal ways besides ripping dvds anyone uses that aren't streaming services?

with 3.1 we should be able to rent movies from google and i do believe there is a offline mode so you can download movies for those planes rides and stuff
It's been rumored that rooted devices will not have access to rent/buy movies using Google's new Movie service.
Am I the only one holding back on rooting my device because of this? I tried thinking about it yesterday, and I do not know of any legitimate way to download a movie (legally - paid) and transfer to watch on my Tab. More to the point, I'd rather just rent at $5 than buy at $15.
I've been a rooter since I had a G1 and was always a proponent of rooting, but I don't want to lose what I feel is a key feature of a tablet -- the ability to watch movies.
I know that's not the case as of now .. I have the new market on my Fascinate .. rooted and can download movies and books like a champ. Maybe its something they will fix later . But isn't the case as of now .

No doubt. My rooted pc is OK to use but a rooted tablet is somehow different.
Someone posted a work-around in the Android Central forum.

My 10.1 is not rooted, and the Google Video app doesn't show up in the market. When I go to the web I can find the app, but my Samsung shows up grayed out and the market claims the device is not compatible with the Video App. I've got it on my Asus Transformer and Acer Iconia tablet though. All three live in the U.S. with me. Anyone have a clue? Maybe a direct download of the video app?
I can confirm that movie playback is indeed prohibited when SU is discovered. I can also confirm that the work around listed previously, er, works.
iTunes it isn't, but it is a legit way of getting media on an Android device. Much better than Samsung's implementation.
I'm one of those odd people who will hack their device on a whim, but won't download illegal media. If I'm going to watch something, I'll rent or buy it.
If Google closes the work around and I have to choose between root and movies, root wins. No contest

Not a big deal for me. Have an SD card+Conector so I can stock up on movies before going anywhere.
My Tab is rooted and running Task's ROM and I rented a movie with no problems. It played on my Tab without mentioning root. When I tried to watch on my rooted Galaxy S2, it said it couldn't play on rooted device. But I found a modified Videos app that worked.

I agree. I buy or rent movies, rip and convert them and put them on my GTab to watch at my convenience.
That not only do they offer a netflix-like stream service with lots of free movies and TV shows, you can watch them on your tab with no issues.
-Login into Amazon via the stock web browser (desktop UA)
-look for Amazon prime instant video somewhere in the top left.
-pick a movie or show
-watch in browser (click on the expand button for full screen)

Just thought I'd share this newfound info with my Prime brothers.

Agreed. I knew about it for a while, but then noticed that the prime section is severely limited. I also have netflix, so I have no need for the prime streaming.
However, it is nice that Amazon is extending some more services to its prime members.
I just found out about this morning, never really noticed it before. I just found it interesting that it was so easy to play on the tab.

I know there is supposed to be a program to download to a PC but not sure about the Tab. My laptop has a crappy screen for watching movies compared to the Tab...
Now that the gnote has a HD screen where can I get HD movies to watch on this beast?
As I now if I go into either Media Hub or Google Movies the HD option is not there as it would be for my tablet.
I would love to watch some HD programming on this thing!

sorry for asking but is that a link to Warez ??
Just rip movies as per usual into either MP4 or MKV and the Note will play it.
Google is your friend here regarding movie ripping (obviously as long as you own the original disc!).
I use a mixture of Anydvd HD and MediaEspresso, amongst other things.
Ps: Movie watching on the Note in 720p is absolutely STUNNING!
Nice. And forgive my ignorance but I download anydvd HD to my laptop and then what? I can put a blue ray disc into my laptop and it'll do the rest or do I need a laptop that can specifically read blue rays?
Otherwords at this time I know I can't put a bluray into my laptop and it'll play it.

I checked it out AnyDVD HD. So I answered my own question.
I do need a Blu Ray for the laptop which I dont have at this time.....
The last version of youtube enables the preloading (caching) of all the videos you add in the watch later playlist. But it needs to be online in order to play them, for some crappy reason. Is there a way to bypass that and play all the videos in "watch later" while offline?
Some info on this feature and the crap reason.
YouTube, careful to draw a distinction between this and total downloading of its vids (which breaks its terms of service), is careful to point out that you’ll still need to be online for the first second when you press play.

I can't get on WiFi at the moment but, I'm thinking that YouTube would store the videos on your phone. I'm thinking in the /data partition under one of the YouTube apps folders. I'll check later tonight once I have WiFi.

Just use a YouTube down loader. I know its one extra step but if its worth the extra step then do it.
Use PVSTAR+ as player - it searches and shows youtube vids, and stores them in a cache. You can also copy them out of the cache and they are normal mp4 files. (it also has a mp3 mode, which only downloads the music part it seems). The app also runs in background and with screen off. Completely replaced youtube app with it.
(it also searches on dailymotion and i think you can add other sites)
