Hello all,
So I just bought a mytouch 4g for 175 from CL, no water damage. I checked the eMMC chip using a terminal emulator, and it checked out good.
Now, How do I root it and install CM7?
I tried the guide on the UNLOCKER"s site, but the files needed are offline.
I tried to use superonelick, rooted with that, but when i use the terminal and enter "SU" I get a permission denied error.

There is a sticky in the development section with some great instructions on a couple of methods. Make sure you check your Android version before you start. You want to root version 2.2.1. Stay away from htc bootloader unlock... Good luck!

Thank you for being polite, eqjunkie. I hope other people follow your example.
Wow lucky! Good chip?
And man, you even got FROYO on it as well! I thoiyght all MT4Gs now have GB on them... I would've thought the original owner had gotten GB on there...
Anyway, just follow what eqjunkie said, and you'll be all ready to go. Be sure to read mine and neidlinbger's guides as well! Good luck!

Which is why I thanked you. If something is easy there is no need for commendation.
Any luck with the rooting, OP? Do you have to downgrade?
Edit: Just saw that you have the froyo bootloader. Niiice.
OK,
sorry I have been off this site for a while. I can not find a good sticky for me to start.
I tried to use the wiki in cyanogenmod, but some files posted are offline
I can not stand stock froyo
Use gfree method to root your phone:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858996
very easy.
Adb is required so here is a link to guide you in the setup:
http://jaxov.com/2010/10/set-up-adb-on-windows-7-vista-xp-for-android-phones/
Thanks,
So yes I ended up doing the gfree method and rooted my phone, flashes CM7on it, but in the end I went back to stock froyo with root acess.
I can not stand the face that the GPS is flaky, I use it alot in my drives.
So whats a good alternative to CM that has good working gps?

I had done that very thing and bricked my G2, lucky for me I had it still under warrenty. It yours is take it to t-mobile store, let them try (which won't work) then have them help you get a replacement.
Good luck

If it powers on, it can probably be fixed. However, not by me. You need to wait for one of these android geniuses from the dev section.
They are going to want to know EXACTLY where you were in the root process when it failed, and what directions you were following with a link.
Be patient, don't freak out, and good luck.
Ps - in the mean time you can search the forums for anyone with the same problem using the same method.

no offense, but i still think your doing it wrong.
my mytouch4g info is as follows
pvt ship s-off
hboot .86.0000
its rooted, running cm7 without issues...
your hboot being .85 if im not mistaken is you installed the engineering hboot as well.. if you only perform temproot, gfree, permroot, reboot. and don't do the engineering hboot, you will still maintain the .86 hboot which is fine for flashing custom roms.
the .85 hboot gives you more flashable abilities, ie official rom releases from other countries or whatever. unnecessary for someone who just uses custom known working roms..
My phone has the same hboot as the phone you are trying to root. I've never tried any other method but, I was able to gain root using grankin's True permaroot guide. But if I remember correctly you will need adb for it.

I had this issue today. Ive rooted a few of these including floor models at local stores. This one today wouldnt turn s off. No matter what method I did. I ended pushing the root files through adb to the device and rebooting after everystep. Once it got s-off no roms would load except iced glacier. Royal glacier and thunderbolt both wouldnt make it past the splash screen. In the end got root but wondering why this was such a pain.

You can easily sell the phone with S-OFF. It can actually increase the value to so wanna be tech nerd who's too afraid to turn S-OFF himself.
Seriously go pick any phone and look them up on eBay. The rooted ones usually sell for more than the unrooted ones.

Root it real quick!
All you need is to put the 2.2 PD15IMG.zip on your SD card and reboot into bootloader and you'll have a 2.2 phone pretty quick. Then you can run Visionary and you'll be set. Should take a total of 15 minutes, including the time to download 2.2 and Visionary.
Then you'll have a fully rooted S-Off phone to sell on eBay. Be sure to put that in big letters in the auction description.

This is the thread you need if you have S-OFF already and want to root it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1200147
The first PD15IMG.zip in that thread gives you Clockwork Recovery, and then you can boot into that to apply the Superuser zip:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=682828
Also if you have S-Off already, you can downgrade to 2.2.1 using the appropriate RUU or PD15IMG.zip, and it won't care about version number.
And the instructions for reverting to S-ON from Gfree are here partway down in the post:

You can if you have the downgraded bootloader can't you? And if he's got S OFF I assumed the bootloader was already downgraded.
In any case, it's super easy to downgrade it and fully root it no matter what the steps are. And if it's rooted it's worth more on eBay

If you still on 2.2.1 then you can easily root with visionary and root.sh.
Unless he has MG2DE eMMC, in which case he'll need gfree.
OP, instead of "hearing" things, read the stickies. And then use gfree.
Well If I go to the bootloader screen it reads
Gracier pvt ship s-on
Hboot-0.86.000
Microp-0429
Radio-26.03.02.26_m
Emmc-boot

Since you don't have engineering bootloader, whatever you read there is irrelevant.
I already wrote what you should do.
So can I just flash the engineering bootloader . And then just root with root.sh ?

I thought it was as obvious as I could make it.
To the [OP] Since you have that chip you have to root using ./gfree. There is no other way to do it. If you try to use the root.sh method you'll end up getting ticked, posting a new thread about how root.sh doesn't work, then we'll remind you of this post. Where @Jack_R1 told you to use ./gfree. Then you'll get all mad because we are being rude, and you'll want to smack us.
So instead of doing that read my "noobie" thread, in my signature, then use the ./gfree and give us a bottle of beer since we helped you.
I have 2 MT4Gs, both rooted and flashed.
Mine wasn't updated and had the SEM04G chip. Easy to root using methods with visionary.
My wife's was 2.3.4 updated with M4G2DE chip. Downgrade was easy enough. Rooting was a pain in the neck.
I went through every option until I got to the True S=Off tutorial using gfree. Once I went through that process, I was permarooted, and then changed to eng bootloader. It can be done without bricking...it's just that much harder to do.

gfree is not the only way to permaroot the MT4G, but it's a good way to do it. I was able to get permarooted with the root.sh method with my phone. Had to try a couple of methods a couple of times each before I got to the gfree method, which finally worked for my wife's phone.

HTC phones are always harder to root than others, since they require S-Off and all that stuff. but when the hard part is complete, the rest is very simple and easy to understand.
I now know that. Lol. But I also have the hd7 and that's even harder to dev unlock "root" . But now I'm only buying htc phones. I like the UI that they have.. and they get more support from devs .. its been almost a year and the sidekick is till stuck with froyo .. they are saying that tmobile is not going to release a gb update ..
