[NEWS] Stories Behind OS Upgrades (Official Samsung Article) - Galaxy S I9000 General

http://global.samsungtomorrow.com/?p=12733

Lol one of the biggest value pack features is the new launcher...I've just read that it consumes 40Mbs of RAM. These guys are stupid.

You mean this?
"Finally the one of the biggest new features of the upgrade is the ‘S Go Launcher Pro’. With this feature users can change the main screen and the icons, for a personalized smartphone."
Not clear what this means - Is there a chance that it includes another laucher (Laucher Pro) ?
Could someone check?

I'm not sure if there are one or two launchers, but burakgon said that the launcher needs 40Mbs of RAM.

That's another question
Burakgon understood from this statement that Samsung says TW4 laucher is the best thing about the ROM.
I understand that Samsung is not referring to the TW4 laucher, but the ability to select an alternative: "S GO LAUCHER PRO"

I just searched on the Samsung Apps but I can't find it. I believe it is just a slight modification of TW4 and they just add it a 'cool name'...

vanilla Google Android OS SGS ROM here??

I picked this up from cross posts at modaco and xda-vibrant, but it seems there is a vanilla (no Samsung apps no TouchWiz) Android OS for the i9000 ... which would be cool ... if it worked. But I'm not sure anyone actually tried this on a SGS? It's been tried on a Vibrant (from what I can tell) and it half worked - dialler was not working so no phone :-(
Anyone who wants to keep track, OP at AndroidForums:
http://androidforums.com/samsung-captivate/130487-roms-monaco-releases.html
but I see the last post there 24th July, so maybe this is old news? In which case .. sincere apologies!
I think a lot of us are wanting a vanilla build of 2.1 (because 2.2 is wishing for just too much ;-) )
I desperatly need Vanilla to run on SGS.
If wasn't for the hardware, I would never have bought a SGS. I DETEST any custom UI.
So what advantage would a vanilla OS give me?
I don’t like TWLauncher so I just installed another launcher like ADW, LauncherPro, and I never see TWLauncher again. And I use the SGS apps I like and don’t use the one’s I don’t, what’s the problem?

Unnecessary bloatware. Even with a Launcher replacement like LauncherPro or ADW, the CrapWiz is still there, all over the OS. Also, it makes upgrades take longer due to development team needing to adjust to their UI of choice.
I sincerelly hope that with Gingerbread and the new Vanilla UI, this crap will be over.
For me it's a matter of compatibility. A small example is Samsung Calendar keeps a local calendar as default. I don't want this since I am fully on google cloud services.
I want the Android OS that asks you for your google account on first boot.
Also, Samsung music player (as good as it may be) is not compatible with many other apps (eg Last.FM scrobbling)
I just get the impression that Samsung have incorporated their own framework to railroad you into the "Samsung" way. Which may be fine for some. I want the "Google" way (having been spoilt with my previous N1/Froyo).
Also, I wonder if vanilla Android OS, the GPS might actually be useful ...

Exactly. You buy an Android phone for the Google experience. I just wished it was like Nexus One is.
Having re-read the original thread, I'm led to believe that the vanilla ROM still includes TouchWiz - from the context, I think this is a ROM from MoDaCo's kitchen perhaps, based on a stock Samsung ROM

Would there be a different GPS driver and API if we had a vanilla OS?

Top Atrix/Android Customizations

Just received my first android phone the Motorola Atrix about a week and a half ago. Have been an iPhone user since the very first model.
One of the things I like about Android is how I can customize it to look better and function better.
So far I have done the following:
LauncherPro Widgets, Docks, etc...
Rooted the device (obviously since I have LauncherPro)
Live Wallpapers
What are some of the other top customizations that some of us new Android users should try?
Install the adeo rom. It deodexes and makes other minor improvements, such as adding a reboot option to the power menu.

why would that be obviously? You don't have to root to use launcher pro.

Rooting the phone isn't necessary in order to change your launcher, but now that you're rooted you can download some apps that require root access and you can most likely get a new ROM, not sure how many ROMs have been made for this phone though.

Fine, I'll be the one to tell you since no-one else will :
Not only is TouchWiz made for a completely different/older version of Android, but also for a completely different device (e.g. the one in my sig). You're asking whether a rather major port can happen here, which most likely it won't.
Sorry.

I think he was talking about Touch Wiz UX. Which is what the new samsung 10.1 tablet has.

Shame you are wrong then!
Touchwiz UX is the new Honeycomb version of Touchwiz which will shortly debut on the Galaxy Tab 10.1, which is quite a similar device to the TF.
I wouldn't be at all surprised if it is both possible to port, and that someone does.
Regards,
Dave
OK - granted the galaxy tab will have a new honey comb specific version of touch wiz...but frankly if it does for tablets what the previous touch wiz does for phones then Samsung can keep it. Porting touch wiz will be like contracting a disease - deliberately.
Hopefully the ADW team will deliver us a shiny new version of their launcher that is optimized for honeycomb

Regardless, WHO WANTS TouchWiz? It's aids. It's better to have stock Honeycomb experience, and install any launcher you prefer afterwards.

+1, I'm hoping that SPB Software can make a tablet-optimised version of SPB Shell 3D. It works very well on my phone and I'm sure they can make it work just as well on a tablet .

I like it, at least the Galaxy tab one. It has however issues, like that horrible colour backdrop for the icons and a true love for re organising the icons, so that you won't find them anymore where you'd expect. And that's why I got ADW EX.
Sent from my GT-P1000 using Tapatalk
Personally, I use ADW EX.
When it comes toUX, you simply cannot make everybody happy. I know that quite well, I just spent most of the day yesterday on a design meeting for what should have been a simply WPF app...
The reason I like ADW is because I can make the UX look close to what I would like it to be.

[Q] for SGT 2 7.0..can anyone port HTC sense UI on tab 2

[anyDEV] can anyone develop the sense ui for this device ?
I think you could find a sense launcher and sense clock somewhere in these forums or in google play try search google by term sense launcher.apk and sense clock.apk
Sent from Galaxy S2 or Galaxy Tab2
Unlikely because Sense is HTC proprietary and requires a special kernel, frame work , and libraries.
Also , questions go in the Q&A section and put more information in the title so people know what you are posting about.

Sorry abt not posting this in the right section....but bro i do believe that someone out there is working on or trying to port it to the device
There have been countless attempts to port Sense, TouchWiz, and Blur to devices that don't ship with said interfaces. I have never seen a fully working ROM ever ported. They get to a certain point in functionality, then progress stops as the only way to fix the remaining issues is to get new binaries compiled which only HTC/Samsung/Moto have the ability to do. Feel free to try it yourself, but I doubt anyone is going to accomplish this. Also, why would you want Sense? It is probably the most bloated of all the OEM Skins out there.

Install a rom that has a theme chooser, download sense aokp/cm theme from market, HTC icons, APW widgets and Nova launcher. That will get you pretty close.
*edit, nevermind. Sense theme chooser theme doesn't work, at least with the cm10 with tablet mod I am using.

Uh, it will take a lot more than a launcher to get multi-window. Maybe the CM team or some uberdev will build a multi-window setup that works. That is about the only thing I want on my N4.

I'd LOVE the smartalarm from touchwiz
Everything else was kinda crap
okay why does it matter why he wants to have the touchwiz launcher? You guys are seriously going to question why he wants it like its any of your buisness, he likes touchwiz, its his choice of liking a different os. Its really stupid for you guys to question and put him down with negativity in comments instead of finding a link and if you dont like it? KEEP YOUR COMMENTS TO YOURSELVES. Thanks to those who provided the link.

I was just Googling some touchwiz launcher stuff for N4 and came to this thread.
Your comment is something that I have always wondered here at XDA. If you are in a particular device's forum, it means you are married to that phone and shall not praise/desire features and stuff which other phones have. It isn't like ditching your current device, XDA is all about development, so if someone seeks features from other phones, I think people should help (if you can) rather than criticizing. And when it comes to likings, everyone has his own preferences... who r we really to judge WHY he is liking this.. Why NOT he likes that.. etc etc. I know a lot of people do not like TW but many do. I ask the TW haters, if you don't like TW then what are you doing in this thread? Why replying? Why bother sneaking in? Just mind your own bloody damn business.

If you start making your own distributions of Android behaving in such fundamentally different ways, I suspect we are going to need to start doing things to prevent you from impacting our app ecosystem. I'm not sure what, but I could imagine things such as restricting how users can interact with Market apps on these devices (not allowing reviews or such).
We have let a lot of things in this area slide -- for example to be allowed to include Market on your device you are supposed to fully pass CTS. However, if you start really diverging from the core Android platform (I would argue this takes you well into the realm of a fork rather than a customization) then some deep issues are going to come up about how we handle these custom builds.
We have been putting a lot of thought and work for a number of years into how to let Android applications run on increasingly diverse and dynamic screens. Doing this correctly, without impacting our app developers in a negative way, is a really challenging problem. I also think it is something that needs to be done at the mainline platform level, not as a customization, because doing it right is going to require new well defined interfaces with applications for them to interact with it, possibly starting with just a facility they need to use to opt in to it.

googles (dianne hackborns) response when cyanogenmod was about to merge a multiwindow feature (cornerstone).
if its a smaller cm-fork or rom, cornerstone is open source waiting to be cherry-picked - although discontinued and buggy from what i hear.
can't imagine google is very happy about samsung doing it, but they might be too powerful a foe to upset.
another small observation, dianne herself introduced something like per app dpi to jellybean which seems related, still dormant. we might see it one day implemented as a real feature.
