When you want to get into recovery, only press the button once when the light comes on.
I've been doing this for a while now and it's always worked, although I haven't used every kernel.

hold for 2 seconds.. just tapping it is harder to get perfect build holding it works fine
My Tab is rooted and Running Official Jellybean, installed "no frills CPU control", and then rebooted. When i was playing GTA iii, I accidentally hit the sleep button...

Try long pressing the back button
It took me a while to figure out as well. If you want it back long press it again (multi window must be enabled)

Or you can use the Multi window button in notification panel.
