Hi,
What is the difference between FireFireFire and TWRP? Which one should I install for backups and recovery?
Thanks!
Both. FireFireFire is the way to get to twrp.
FireFireFire is the custom bootloader that allows one click function to get into recovery.
TWRP is the actual recovery. I recommend using CWM Recovery as TWRP has no support from the developers and is still buggy.

Thanks, I wasn't sure which one was the recommended recovery. I know that TeamWin did a great job with TWRP but stopped work on it. Anyway, I just installed smirkis' Gscript with the custom bootloader with new logo along with CWM Touch and it works great.

personally I prefer twrp. It's rather simple to get into, just hold the power button for a second or two when booting. I like the interface as well, it's very basic and I mean that in a good way. It's straightforward as well, easy to use.

not to start a war, but tthat ease of getting in has nothing to do with twrp. that's purely fff bootloader.

am using TWRP with no issues at all
I used TWRP for months and just stayed with it when CWM touch came out. Then it failed to give full backups three times. The restore would get halfway through system, and then revert to TWRP. When I compared size, the failed backup was much smaller. I keep two or three just for repetitive redundancy. So, went to DoomLord's CWM thanks to smirkis and his g-script, now I like it and the interface and program even better than TWRP. YMMV.

First of all I'd like to thank all of you guys helping us noobs to get the best out of our phones.
To the problem, I can't get the clockworkmod to replace the stock recovery. I've tried to install older versions with rom manager but it doesn't work. Does amon ra work for legend? Any other ideas that I can try?
I'm using azure nightly 0927

what are you trying to accomplish?
I want to be able to boot to a recovery where I can apply a backup. As it is now I get to the stock recovery screen when I push recovery in the bootloader.
Sent from my Legend using XDA App
Because the recovery partition is locked at all times and we need to wait for an engineering hboot or unrevoked forever to write to it.
Once this is accomplished you will be able to write a custom recovery image.

Are there any benefits in a custom recovery image, besides the HTC bootscreen?

Oh, thanks. But there's no option that lets me apply the backups I've done. Only the apply update.zip... Does that mean I can rename my latest backup to update.zip?

update.zip should be containing ClockWorkMod, so called fake flash. Flashing that should bring you the recovery screen with more options...
Is it worth installing the developer preview with their bootstrap tool or will there be a flashable zip made soon for this so I can just do it in twrp

There are two files you have to flash in CWM/TWRP to have it available at any time. You don't even need a computer to install and test it. Be warned, though, it's really not worth it at it's current state.

The flashable zips are in here. I haven't personally tried it yet -- internet in my country is pretty crappy.. download will take a while..

Flash manta, then flash the armhf, then wipe and you're good to go. That worked for me and didn't mess with my sdcard at all. (obviously it does a 'factory reset' on the device though). Backup with TWRP and you're good to go.

Only if you do it using the Ubuntu install method, where it flashes the .imgs over top. If you install it via CWM/TWRP then it keeps whatever recovery you have on the device.

I flashed them both like you said, but it would just reboot my recovery when about 2/3 the way done with the armhf zip, and i tried just rebooting system but it just boots past google and sits at a black screen. Thinking i might have a bad download but nonetheless it was not a success on my end and im just back on android.
thanks anyways for the help, if anyone else hears of this issue and knows how to solve i would love to know.
Does this OS allow me to run any Ubuntu program? Or is it a different system?

Both TWRP ans CWM are good. You could also try Phil`z Touch recovery from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2210081&highlight=phil+z. It`s just that TWRP has some more options and it is themable. For me personaly CWM is fine. Just try them out and keep the one you like most.
I never used CWM as I have always used TWRP.
I would recommend TWRP because its easy to understand and theme-able.
i used cwm for a long time. then tried twrp and well, its better. its faster, i seem to have less problems overall and its finally starting to be aware of what im doing, that means flashing is easier because it tries to guess what you will need next, like wipe/cache buttons after flashing instead of making you click through a myriad of hacky options, things like staying in the folder where you picked your last file or install-queues made me switch.

This guy knows what's up.
+1 to that.
TWRP every time for me.
I just find CWM fiddly and over engineered, especially the touch version.
TWRP has nice big buttons for my sausage fingers too. You're a lot less likely to do something wrong by accident in TWRP due to it's "Swipe to activate" function
Is 2.5 the latest twrp version

I use CMW on my S3 and TWRP on my N4.
I have been using CMW for years and I'm very use to it. I don't really like how TWRP looks. Although it looks simple to use because of the large tiles but I still prefer CMW any other day.

CWM is nice and straight forward. It can be a little confusing at first in TWRP how to wipe /data while maintaining /data/media. However, TWRP supports open recovery scripts while CWM uses a proprietary format only supported by its own ROM Manager.
Haven't used either on the N4, but my vote goes to TWRP.
CWM for long time and I like it a lot so never bother myself to change it

I've never had any problems with CWM or TWRP, but I prefer TWRP's interface. Try them both and stick with the one you like?
Twrp is miles ahead of clockwork.
Queue flashing is brilliant

Another vote for TWRP. Queuing up your zips is great. There are also themes for it.

Although I like TWRP better I've had quite a few failed ROM flashes with it. I don't have those same problems with the same files with CWM. This is on three different phones that I currently have.
I prefer to like Cwm than twrp but, I just wanna feel twrp ... How to install twrp? Can it be flashable zip?

You can have the TWRP recovery in 3 ways, 1) flash it via fastboot, 2) install via flashable zip file in your current recovery, 3) use ROM Manager and flash it.
Easiest way to install TWRP is probably through goomanager.
I've installed TWRP on all my devices so far. I like the interface of it more than cwm. Just flash both and check them out, everybody has its own preferences. (like on kernels and roms ... )
go to the TWRP thread and click on the paperclip in the thread name and you will see a bunch of different version of TWRP but may I suggest the latest for N$ 2.6.3.3... When you flash its generally multiple files and TWRP allows for less usage as far as your volume button is concerned.
I am new to rooting. I have rooted my razr m from the official 4.1.2 update. I want to install roms.
I have installed the safestrap 3.12 and every time i reboot my device it says "safestrap:disabled" and just normally boots my device.
Help!

You'll have to press the button that says "click here to enter recovery"
If it's not there, you flashed the wrong safestrap. Most ROMs are going to CWM/TWRP tho, so it may not be a bad idea to unlock and install one of those

I also have SS 3.12 out of habit I guess. I know there are other choices now like TWRP 2xx or 3xx. I'm still a little confused tho maybe you can clarify for me:
When Hashcode developed SS, didn't he base it of off TWRP? So why would (should) I switch if its technically the same program?
The only reason I was reluctant to move over to the newer TWRP recover WA because I have a few safe strap recoveries that I'm afraid would work with TWRP. Do you know if they are compatible? If they are then I'll switch.
And you did mention CWM, but I was under the impression that CWM was dated and considered an older (inferior) recovery option compared to SS our TWRP? Is there a new CWM now with a similar interface to TWRP?
the only issue I have with SS is when I try to create a new ROM slot it only uses the internal storage (which if very limited on my phone) but I have tons if free space on my ext SD card. If the new TWRP or CWM have an option to utilize the external space for the creation of ROM slots that would be great!
Thanks

OK so SS is not actually a recovery. It's a hack to get something like a recovery (and a very good hack at that) but it's not actually recovery. With twrp or cwm, if you happen to flash /system, you can still access recovery.
Twrp has more features than cwm, but cwm isn't outdated. Either works fine, I prefer cwm tbh.

Sorry, it's just that some tutorials are not complete at all.
To my understanding is that the device will recover the original recovery every reboot

I'm pretty sure TWRP has an option to keep it. I'm using cwm and I can reboot fine. Its when flashing new firmware it will replace your custom recovery. CWM asks if you would like to disable recovery flash and selecting Yes let's you keep your custom recovery!

the missing line in the script from your post was this
fastboot.exe boot cwm.img
edit: i haven't tried twrp yet
