Serious battery drain with minimum usage

Hi all,
The battery life of my 4month old SGS is becoming shorter every week! I can 'almost' last a work day (8 hours) with a fully charged battery and minimal use.
I had this problem also on the stock firmware, Darky's rom 8.x was a slight improvement (much faster tho!), Light-ning rom and Darky's rom 9.x.
Everyday I charge my battery untill it is full, when my alarm goes off it's already at 98% (it's still hooked up). When I'm in the train to school, my battery already dropped around 86% (being idle). I check some mobile websites, my e-mail and read some twitter messages.
Because I know services as Twitter (I'm using Tweetdeck) uses alot of resources and battery, so when I'm done looking I always shut down those programs. And I often do an 'end all' task in the 'System' app which I purchased from the market lately to monitor my battery.
During the day the only thing I do is check my mail and some websites, but not for long, mostly it would be around 5minutes or so. So WiFi is turned OFF, GPS is turned OFF, and only GMail synchronizes with default settings. So what's the deal? Is my battery slowly dieing because of oldness, or is there another problem?

after flashing your custom roms of choice... did you ever do a battery calibration?
like let your phone drain till it dies on its own... turn it on againa nd let it die again to completely drain it to the point where u cant even turn it on.
Then plug your phone in to charge and let it charge to 100%. Keeping the phone plugged in turn on your phone into recovery. Then clear battery status.
Then reboot your phone into normal mode and let it continue charging till it says 100%. WHen you unplug your phone it SHOULD say 100% still.
This normally fix the problem but if you notice that your phone is dying quickly still then PM me.

One small advice,try logging out google talk,of-course if you are not on it much,it will give you at least 2-3 hrs more.
Also,there is already a thread active on this forum 'dont kill your phone
,give it a life' give that a read.
Mainly this battery drains are there because of apps doing sync. or polling.identify them and adjust settings.

I've been browsing these forums lately, and I've also come across a thread which advice is just the opposite and that you should NOT do this, any advice if that's true? And is it also true that deleting the batterystats helps?

Am I auto-logged in on Google talk? If so, how do I log myself out :$? So Google sync might drain it? (Mail, Agenda, Contacts?)

I am not 100% sure if you auto logged or not.I believe not but if not so , then open app,press menu/setting button on phone,select logout.also if you not intending to use data network,press power key till you see a menu turn off,data network,turn it on when you need it.These small things saves some power.
If you dont want to mess around with this little twiks then 'juice plotter' is the app for you.it will manage lots of things and defi. saves battery.
BTW based on your usage desc., I think I use it in similar way ...almost and yet phone makes ~2 days.

You of course wouldn't be doing this alot nor should you NEED to do this often. It's only something you do when you're experiencing what you currently are.
Personally I have no idea why anyone say u "Should NOT" do this.. it's not like you're altering anything hardware wise. It's mainly software and power usage aspects.
Like I said to each their own. Some people say custom roms are a "No-No" cuz it messes with the phone in more bads than good and some says stock roms are for noobs. You dont HAVE to try what I said, it's merely a suggestion of fix or methods that seems to solve the problems others have encountered.
Clearing the battery status pretty much resets it's counter to 100% and from there it will "calculate" the life of the battery from full to empty. It's a calibration thing.
Now on regards to usage, keep your data plan off and auto-sync off when you're not using it. Leave your wifi off and gps off as well.. pretty much keep anything you dont need off until you need it. Some samsung apps does a background run thing where it'll auto turn on and auto run in the background which drains ur battery quite badly. If you don't use goggle talk or samsung chat apps, there are many ways to remove them completely so it won't mess with your battery life

Simple you installed a rom with multiple posts on battery drain problem .
A rom that also tells you about battery drain problems /fix on its front page .

Okay! And you're right, it logs me on when I start the app. But I logged me out, just to be sure. I know about turning of the mobile data traffic, I'll see how much it saves. I think I came across juice plotter, but I'll look into it. Thanks!

Don't be offended by what I said! . I only wanted to make sure I'm doing the right thing, I appreciate your criticism though. I did what you said and fully drained my battery yesterday, kept it charging overnight, cleared the batterystats through recovery mode and at the moment it's charging till 100%. I will see if it helps!
And according to my usage, I have Wifi and GPS turned of as default. And because I reinstalled a new ROM inclusive data wipe I don't have much chat apps installed, maybe there are some default apps that don't show up in the 'System panel' app though?

Care to explain a bit further?
FYI, I installed these ROMS:
past: Stock firmware 2.2.1
past: Darky's ROM v8.0 Gingerbread edition
past: Light-ning ROM 2.2 (if I'm correct, it's probably the latest)
current: Darky's ROM v9.2 Extreme edition (9.2 should've fixed the battery drain, am I right?)

im having similar problems too. calibrating doesnt really make a difference.
i installed an app called task identifier which is brilliant it tell me whats happening when the phone is asleep. the only trouble is i dont understand what these processes are so i cant disable them.... is there any sort of app out there that completely logs / signs you out of every app ??
i have 108 apps (not including system apps) and its hard trying to eliminate the battery drainers

As it says post lots of with battery problems big big percentage running Darky rom .
current: Darky's ROM v9.2 Extreme edition (9.2 should've fixed the battery drain, am I right?) You would have to ask on dARKY Post .
Look at Battery drain thread LAST POST OR SO MAY BE OF INTEREST .
I am of the opinion that if a rom breaks something then installing more roms will often not fix the problem . I prefer a blank completely wiped phone in such cases with no trace of any rom left on it .

I think we should start narrowing down which apps drain most juice. I've been using Advanced Task Killer just to narrow down a couple.
example:
Sound Hound - starts on its own
Facebook had an issue with notifications push, when disabled, it still sent notifications to my phone. But I think they fixed it in the latest version.
We could start adding versions to know which app is a 'juice drainer'

[Q] Pretty bad battery life, help please?

I'm not seeing the battery life everyone does with the phone, and frankly I am not sure if it's a hardware or software issue.
For starters, I have excessive battery drain while on WiFi and not using the phone - about 3%/h according to BetterBatteryStats. It all seems to come from two particular wakelocks - sns_async_ev_wakelock (kernel) and WifiOffDelayIfNotUsed (partial). There is also BlockBeforeSleep but not as obvious as the other two. Also, while on data, I get another massive kernel wakelock - bman_dmux_wakelock.
Right now I have no relevant BBS or GSam screenshots, since my phone is still plugged in. However here's a screenshot of Battery Monitor Widget on a completely full charge - if there's anything wrong with the voltage or other data please tell me, my return window for the phone ends in a week -> screenshot
Tomorrow I will be going out and will use data, so I will post screenshots here and on the GSam thread. If anyone has any idea what I can do about this, please tell me - I absolutely love the phone and it pains me that I can't use it fully.
For what it's worth, the phone is running V10B - seems to be a Taiwan ROM.

First of all, I suggest you to
1. Install Wakelock Detector to determine exactly what is going on with your G2
2. Install CPU Spy to see if your G2 is even going into Deep Sleep as it should.
3. Install Greenefy (root needed) and hibernate all those nasty background apps you don't need running until you need them running.

Do 1. and 2. have any benefits over BBS? I would also gladly use Greenify but I am not rooted yet.

All these apps have their own specific uses and purpose and can be used together or on their own.
The first two are for diagnostic purposes and the last one (Greenify) to avoid unnecessary data and memory consumption, thus saving battery.
Have you tried the obvious first? Starting from scratch by doing a hard reset?
Also I would really recommend you to root and get rid of all unnecessary boatware and to control things like boot up processes, startup items, fstrims, etc.

[Q] Android system drain after factory reset.

I'm starting to think the goodness of the Note 3 battery is becoming a joke. What I did was clear my cache partition and did a factory reset after from the recovery menu. I have not installed any other apps yet. I just set up dropbox, play books, email, etc. Normal things for normal use.
I did a reset because my battery was draining before and I thought a reset could resolve it. I need to ask for solutions as this is really giving me a headache.
Don't ask if I have turned off this or that, most probably I did as I read from multiple threads. Those threads are only guessing or otherwise throwing the OP in a loop for the search of answers.
Xda, I need your help to figure out how to SOLVE this stupid drain.
Note on the screenshot: I took that screen after 30 mins after plugging it out. It drained 2% while I was doing absolutely nothing but stare at the Android System bar graph go higher. Its like a plague for the damn phone.

I installed BBS and here are screenshots of the partial and kernel wakelock. Is this normal though? This happened while I was sleeping overnight and I have not installed any apps other than BBS. This is how my stats were before and my battery is draining fast especially when I'm using my phone.
Thing is, I have set all measures possible to extend battery life non rooted and it goes down by the minute of light use.

at least should mentioned ur model n900 or n9005!?
anyway i did this for my N900 after i got battery draining once and it solve problem;
when it discharge to ~15% turn it off and connect it to charger and let it charging 100%
it can help battery to charge without using it at same time
i mentioned it before several times (in another threads) it s like re-gauging battery.
another thing u can do is flashing another stock firmware
but search for the more stable firmware.

The joys of Android!
Wakelock detector and BetterBatteryStats are your best friend in regards to stuff like that. - Usually it's Alarmmanager or something similar that causes it. What generally fixed it for me was switching ROMS

*rooting, switching roms and other watchamacallit are out of my comfort zone atm. I am trying to read about them alright but idk, I just don't get it lol. The Note 3 is my first Android/smartphone coming from the olden mobile phone days.

Do you also have a microSD or a large amount of custom files in your (internal or external) memory? Since when you do factory-reset you also clear all the preliminary indexes and caches that the system created, and it will work pretty hard to re-index all that after first reboot!

Ahh wise not messing if out of your comfort zone then, sensible guy.
However, have a good read around, you'll find after some heavy duty reading you'll probably feel alright in maybe trying rooting and debloating some apps etc. But then again, you might not. That is one of the best things about Android, you can play around to suit your needs whether novice or pro.
Also, if you do fancy rooting and need help you can post here, or you can just shoot me a PM I'll help you over the first hurdle at least if you want :good:

No, I don't have an SD card inserted. This is my second reboot since trying to solve the problem.

[Q] TWO Android systems draining battery??

Good day to you all,
Recently after a small android update (still having version 4.4.2) I noticed the battery was draining faster than I'm used to. Before that, it was consuming roughly 1% per hour in idle. This has changed now to 3-5% per hour. Looking at the battery info I noticed the Android system was the biggest batterysucker here. Not only that, there are even TWO Android systems shown and I began to think there's something wrong here.

Also looking at the wakelocks shows that my phone is barely able to get into sleepmode.

Before posting this thread I have literally tried every option to see if it could lessen the battery consumption:
- Disabled Google location reporting services
- Disabled GPS
- Disabled Google sync
- Disable Wifi when in Sleep mode
- I don't use Google Now so it's disabled
- Widen the Facebook refresh intervals to 4 hours
- Wiped the cache partition
None of the above worked and I started to think that the second Android system here might be the cause.
Should there be a second Android system consuming battery? What could be the problem here??

is hard to tell with what you show here...get an app like Better Battery Stats

Let it run for 3-4 hours and check it , the app will tell tell you what is going on....is the only way to find the real culprit

Will this app also show the needed info even when my phone isn't rooted? Because I'm really not into rooting it.

For this cases root is good to have as it gives you a better access to all the process running , try without root and see what kind of info you get

If it's a conciliation, my android (currently on AOSP) is also running two android systems. Not exactly the same name (Android-System and Android-Besturingssysteem), but you get the idea. You mentioned quite a few things you've already tried, but what about existing widgets and or android apps you've installed? Usually (for me anyway) battery drain is an installed app not exactly behaving nicely.

So does this mean I'm not able to see the exact cause of my wakelocks since my phone isn't rooted?? I have installed Gsam Battery monitor from Google Play, hopefully it will give me (and you guys) the relevant information after keeping my phone on idle for a while.
@Skyrider: The weird thing is that in my case, it DOES display the same name twice. Doesn't that seem weird? I can't see any Android OS (besturingssysteem) displayed.
Also, if I have a battery heavy app, shouldn't it be displayed in the battery info screen as well? I only have the Weather widget and a News widget (NU.nl) on my homescreens. Haven't installed many apps except for Facebook and a few games that barely use background processes.

In my opinion, that's the problem with the default battery information. In my years of experience, it usually never knows the information that you need what exactly is braining the battery. If your battery is still being drained, I suggest to remove most of your apps. Only for a day orso. It should be enough to gather the information to know that at least one of your apps was the cause of it.
It's a pain to do it. But It always has helped me rather than relying on apps of which usually doesn't work out for me.
Also. Might be a good idea to alter your system language from Dutch to English and check the battery info again to search for the duplicate running system on google. You'd expect "Android System" being enough, but who knows that a different language might show a different name.

Ok, I don't have the slightest idea what happened but my battery duration is amazing now. After installing Gsam Battery Monitor and charging my phone to 100% I went to sleep and after 10 hours of standby I looked at my phone and it was on 93%. My phone doesn't consume more than 0,6-1,0% per hour now in the last 3 days!!
I haven't changed anything except choosing to use Wifi and mobile network for location services but not GPS. Weird thing is that I tried that option before without success.
I'm happy now

Yea, I'm using the Dutch language. But I'm not using the stock ROM of the phone, so hence I am seeing different systems running in the background. But I'm glad the battery is semi-fixed.

Ok, so I changed my phone to English and behold, one of the "Android Systems" indeed changed to "Android OS"
I could have sworn it was like that when my phone was in Dutch.
Perhaps someone with the stock ROM in Dutch could check that out?

No idea if this helps but i thought might as well contribute what it sais on my phone

Thanks a lot for confirming this! I guess Android OS is indeed translated to "System" for Dutch S4's.
Have you tried my suggestions in the opening post?

Huge battery drain

I bought the mi A1 about 8 months ago and it was working fine up until 3 weeks ago.
The battery has started to drain big time and the Android is consuming most of the power.
I've tried the below already,*
1. Calibrating my battery.
2. Factory reset to January update.
3. Stopping the apps running in the background.
4. Turning off location / wifi and internet.
5. Tried disabling backup of photos.
6. Disabled app preview messages under Google.
Despite doing all this the battery drains big time, even when it's idle when I'm sleeping.
P.s - I'm unable to upload screenshot because it keeps saying that there's a network issue. But the screenshot stats say that the android os consumes most of the battery and SoT was 30 minutes. Phone was idle for most of the time. It came down 100-20% in a few hours.
Android OS is eating away most of the battery.

First thing, clear the cache, you can use explorer to do it, hit clean at the bottom.
Check running apps (settings > developer > running services) and see what is running and using battery.
It might be the media scanner, they use loads of battery when they get stuck on a corrupt file, you could take out the sd card if you have it formatted as external.

Thank you for your response.
I've cleared cache using the Files Go app.
I checked the services running in the background and I've all the cached process but they seem to be regenerating.
Apps consuming RAM are - Settings, Messenger, callenhancement, SimContacts,com.qualcomm.qcrilmsgtunnel, carrier services, google play services, spock, swiftkey and the launcher.
All these get regenerated even if I kill them.
Do any of the following cause battery drain? If yes, how do I fix them?
I've already done a factory reset but the problem still persists.

Apps will start and run in the background, that is normal in android, the only way you can reduce that is to reduce the background apps in developer options.
I think you should instal better battery stats which should help you work out exactly what is draining the battery.
Is you phone stock, have you rooted, used any custom roms or modded it?

My phone is stock, I have not rooted nor have I installed any custom ROM.
I have installed better battery stats in my phone.

OK, without root you might be better with Gsam battery monitor but see how you go.

Gsam monitor detected 96% of battery to have been used by android OS.
